Soooo I got a shit ton of replies during the past couple hours. There were 5 replies, THREE OF WHICH said we need more psychological representation in our community, so that's what I'll be working on. Down below this will be a full list of stuff I have gathered from people who decided to answer my question and I'll be slowly going through this list and slowly adding to it

What is a kin? I’ve been trying to figure it out for a while, but I’m still not sure...

Kinning is basically when you integrate a person/place/thing/concept into your identity, or you identify as a person/place/thing/concept! Ie; when someone kins a character, they identify as that character. Weather it be spirtual, coping, or mental health reasons.

For example, I kin Pamela Voorhees. I have a connection to her because we have similar pasts and motivations, and I also relate to her emotions a lot. She is a part of my identity in that way. You've probably seen the "I identify as a wolf" sorta deal, which is otherkin or therian and usually religious in nature!

For years I've become more and more bear. Some people actually thought I had a psychological problem. I just love bears and really associate with them, like a spirtual connection. I'm usually quite a placid person and I love bear hugs, but every now and again I'm an angry bear and can't help raaawwwwrrrrr-ing and feeling I need to claw and bite. I love being snuggled up in my bear pit and love the outdoors. I love to eat too... Well I've got to maintain my bear shape! I'm over six foot, quite stocky and furry. I'm glad I found out about therians and otherkin, I don't feel alone anymore! If your a bear, drop me a growl.

Hey so friendly reminder to quit trying to police other people's kintypes/calling them a horrible person because of their kintype/telling them to drop their kintype.

People are not who they were before. Kinning with a character that has done bad stuff does not mean that the person kin with them is a bad person, and usually, they feel really horrible about it!

Very importantly: stop saying this stuff because people can't change or choose their kintypes. I know, I know, people say this all the time and antis always moan about it because there are some people using wrong terminology or who are just completely uninformed as to what kin is.

Being kin is involuntarily identifying as something nonhuman/fictional/etc, whether for spirtual reasons/psychological/etc

Being COPINGLINK is voluntarily identifying as something nonhuman/fictional/etc, whether to cope with trauma, mental illness, or other such reasons.

This is why I do not tolerate hate towards people's kintypes- whether towards the character themself, the person being kin with a character outside their sexuality or race, the person being kin with a character who has done problematic stuff, etc.

They did not choose it, so you should not be attacking them for it, especially when you obviously don't realize what being otherkin actually implies.

I always knew I wasnt.. entirely human. It wasn't until I found the term otherkin (ironically, in an otherkin hate video where they claimed they all otherkin were "faking it for attention.") that I connected the dots :)

So with all the kin stuff being asked, I have a question that probably sounds silly, but what exactly is kin? I've heard about it and I can kinda guess but I don't fully know... I really like your blog btw ^u^

for me personally, kin is somewhat of a spirtual thing, mixed with the multiverse theory? from the otherkin wikia:

Most fictionkin believe in the multiverse theory. They believe there are limitless parallel universes, which means there are ones where fictional characters are real. If this is true, then theoretically a character could live, die, and then be reborn in a different universe. This is a good enough explanation for most fictionkin's spirituality. The aforementioned would also explain memories or déjà vu experienced while reading, watching, or listening to something that relates to the fictional characters. 

on the otherhand, i’m also kin in a nonfiction way, in that i heavily identify with/as concepts, too! im glitchkin, and robotkin, and i really like finding cool things and posts involving these concepts!

i know this can be very hard to believe or even concerning at first! however, i find that the notion of being ‘kin’ as one that’s comforting, and doesn’t hurt other people, so i see nothing wrong with it. 

i’m okay with nonkin people following me, or ppl who don’t believe in kin, too! if u have anymore questions, don’t hesitate to ask

I wouldn't say most neogender folks are mentally ill. all neogenders/xenogenders are valid as fuck tho. and most otherkin folk are spirtual/etc in their identity, someone who uses something like that to cope is called a copinglinker! 🙋

Struggles and frustrations as an otherkin/therian

So something was pointed out to me during my questioning people lol (I can't say who, too many people replied to me and I lost track of who suggested what so if you see this I'm sorry, give yourself credit!) Anyways with that being said, they pointed out the struggles that we go through as otherkin/therians/etc to figure out our damn kintypes, so enjoy my rant.

First part of this rant is, I feel this! I'm a snow leopard therian, and that was so obvious for me and my first discovered kintype. But now I am discovering I have more kintypes and something I'd like to say about this is for a few of them, I'm not sure if it's an otherhearted connection or they're genuinely my kintype. I feel this with wolves, I have an otherhearted connection to them, but they aren't a kintype. With other animals I'm struggling so much with this!

Second part of this rant is uncommon kintypes! If you're objectkin, robot/machinekin, dollkin, any conceptkin, anything along those lines, YOU CANNOT FIND MUCH ABOUT THAT SHIT ONLINE! I spent so much time researching voidkin, but no one knows shit about voidkin! I knew I was most likely voidkin but wanted to be positive, you can't be positive if there's no content about your damn kintype or connection. This especially goes for objectkin and conceptkin. Objectkin struggle to figure it out because every single connection to your kintype is so different, and figuring out your kintype with no one else that has it, is a pain in the ass cause you can't even base your experiences off of someone else. Same goes for conceptkin, demonkin, divinekin, and just any "rarer" kintypes!

The third part of this, the damn confusion. Kintypes can easily get mixed up or the lines between certain kintypes can easily be blurred. I'm going to do an example really quick for this, but just a disclaimer, this is not based off of my experiences. Let's say someone is a domestic dog kin and wolf kin, they can have very similar shifts, behavioral traits, and general experiences with those two very similar theriotypes. I know for some people they can't figure out if they're a domestic dog or wolf because the experiences are so similar sometimes and not everyone gets dream shifts or remembers past lives. Of course this is just an example, but this can go for kintypes that seem wildly different to! Anything with small similarities can suddenly just become so blurred with another kintype and that's also a pain when you're trying to figure out your kintype!

The fourth part of this (yes this goes on forever) is some of us don't have a solid identity. Someone mentioned that for some of us alterhumans, and non-humans that's what we are. We experiences humanity just in a different way. For some of us we can't find our kintype because we don't have one that's just there all the time. What they were telling me when answering my question was, they can feel certain kintypes, felines, canines, sometimes even fictionkin, however they don't have a "proper" kintype. Proper as in a main one or one that can actually, fully identity as. But that's another thing, we don't have proper kintypes. Everyone experiences this so differently! I'm a voidkin (psychological) and a snow leopard therian (spiritual) and when I learned that it was the weirdest feeling for me. I started questioning if I was even a spirtual therian because certain things such as being both a spirtual and psychological otherkin just aren't talked about. And some of us experience our kintypes just as a deep feeling of being that animal, while others have the spiritual connection where they believe they have a past life as their kintype or their spirit is their kintype. And people even have combinations of this or wildly different experience. What I'm saying with this section is we all experience it so differently and finding people who experience these identities that experience it the same or even similar is insanely difficult. What they were telling me was they just experience humanity differently and they struggled to figure out what kind of alterhuman or non-human because not many people experience this, let alone talk about this stuff!
