2023 has been so gooood. we got not one, not two, but three new movies/shows with female leads whose story or the character themself is headcanoned/interpreted by the fandom as trans.
(note: of course i know only one of these is considered canon by the creator(s) but i hope not to see disrespectful comments below towards trans people or anyone really.)
(another note: this is just a silly post so please take it with a grain of salt.)

Hello. I'm someone with ADHD and have a pretty hard time reading books that don't have any pictures or illustrations. There are plenty of ya books, manga, and graphic novels out there, but I have been wanting to expand my horizons.
So I was wondering if you had any recommendations of books in your collection that have pictures, that aren't part of the 3 categories above?
Thanks in advance.
Hello! hmmm right, that’s tricky. Here’s a few that we’ve got that don’t fit the categories above, but definitely include illustrations (not sure to what extent in each though)
The Ex-Girlfriend of My Girlfriend is My Girlfriend
Let Me Out - doesn’t bill itself as a graphic novel, but does look a bit like one
Liberated: The radical life and art of Claude Cahun
The Pride Atlas - lots of photographs
Bordered Lives: Transgender Portraits from Mexico
queer, some illustration or photography, not yet in our collection;
She of the Mountains by Vivek Shreya
Queer as all get out by Shelby Criswell
The Fire Never Goes Out: a Memoir in Pictures by N.D. Stevenson
Oh, Luna Fortuna by Stacy Bias
We are Everywhere: Protest, Power, and Pride in the History of Queer Liberation
The Invisibles: Vintage Portraits of Love and Pride
There are a lot of great graphic novels out there beyond the traditional superhero comic style.. so we really are missing a lot of possibilities by cutting those out. the borders between graphic novel, and illustrated book are also very nebulous!
we had some success searching things like “illustrated adult fiction” but then not all of those are going to be queer

okay ! so first step in my revamp is establishing what muses i’m going to be writing ! first and foremost, i’m doing myself a favor and NOT really having primary, secondary muses, etc. muses are weird. sometimes they’re loud, sometimes they’re not. i’m going to write who is loud and when muses go quiet, i sometimes might not write them for a while. i apologize if that happens to be someone you want to interact with. PLEASE know that i love and adore you and i will reply as soon as they wake up again. i’m always happy to plot aus so if you want to do that with someone who is awake, let me know !
i’ll be making a more fancy muse page and stuff, but until i have the spoons to do that, i’ll be posting A LIST under the cut. i’ve almost definitely forgotten at least one muse so if you followed me for someone and they aren’t on here, know that i probably still intend to write them and just forgot. feel free to ask. i will also write certain muses on a request only/private basis so that also works, though mostly for partners i know really well !

LaRoy Texas Review: A Talented Cast Shines
Tumblr media
LaRoy, Texas, a crime thriller comedy that saunters into the limelight with a cocky smirk, can easily be described as a hidden gem among modern cinematic endeavors. Shane Atkinson, known for his keen eye for blending genres, presents us with a story that's as unpredictably hilarious as it is compelling. Anchoring this chaotic whirlwind is John Magaro, who delivers a stunning performance as Ray, a downtrodden man who finds himself accidentally moonlighting as a hitman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkCX-xpqLOs The Good: At first glance, LaRoy, Texas might seem like your typical dark comedy, but Atkinson's script ingeniously weaves together elements of a thriller with comedic moments that never feel forced or out of place. The narrative grabs you from the outset—Ray's discovery of his wife's infidelity and his subsequent brush with suicide immediately set the tone, laying a foundation that is both darkly comedic and heart-wrenchingly vulnerable. Magaro's portrayal of Ray is nuanced; he perfectly encapsulates a man so lost in the despair of his own existence that he's willing to embrace the absurdity of becoming a hitman on a whim. This drastic pivot in his life serves as the story's linchpin, inviting viewers on a journey that's both outrageously funny and introspectively bleak. The supporting cast enhances this dynamic beautifully. Steve Zahn's Chip is the quintessential bad influence—charismatic, morally ambiguous, and absolutely hilarious. His chemistry with Magaro is palpable, adding layers to their interactions that are key to the film's emotional and comedic rhythms. Megan Stevenson as Stacy-Lynn and Matthew Del Negro as Junior enrich the narrative with their performances, offering perspectives that not only heighten the tension but also provide a richer understanding of the bizarre world Ray finds himself in. Dylan Baker’s portrayal of Harry is a masterclass in subtlety. He perfectly embodies the idea of a villain who’s as terrifying as he is comically disillusioned. The beauty of LaRoy, Texas lies in its ability to surprise. Just when you think the story is heading in a predictable direction, Atkinson throws in a curveball. It flips the narrative on its head. The blend of crime and comedy is handled with such finesse that it never feels jarring. Instead, the transitions from laughter to suspense are seamless, showcasing Atkinson’s deft storytelling and directional prowess. The dialogue is sharp, filled with witty exchanges and memorable one-liners that ensure the pace never falters. Visually, the film is a treat. The cinematography highlights small-town Texas, emphasizing Ray's isolation. The choice of color palette, with its washed-out hues interspersed with vibrant shots, mirrors the juxtaposition at the heart of the story. The soundtrack, a mix of country tunes and suspenseful scores, complements the visual storytelling. This adds another layer to the film's unique atmosphere. The Bad: However, LaRoy, Texas is not without its flaws. There are moments where the narrative seems to lose its footing. Most particularly in the second act where the balance between the thriller elements and the comedy slightly tips. A few plot points feel underdeveloped. It leaves one wondering what a bit more screen time or a tighter script could have achieved. Despite this, the film manages to right itself, steering towards a climax that is both satisfying and thought-provoking. Overall: What truly sets LaRoy, Texas apart is its unflinching examination of despair and redemption. It explores seeking a second chance at life in unorthodox ways. Ray's journey is an absurd yet compelling metaphorical rollercoaster. LaRoy, Texas is a true standout in the genre of crime thriller comedies. Its blend of sharp wit, suspense, and emotional depth creates a cinematic experience that's both entertaining and meaningful. While it might stumble in places, the film ultimately stands as a testament to Shane Atkinson’s talent and vision. John Magaro and the rest of the cast deliver performances that are unforgettable. This ensures that LaRoy, Texas leaves a lasting impression. Read the full article

From the Chicago City Wire:
Stacy Davis Gates, the President of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), has been accused of advising union members at Stevenson Elementary School to “punch their principal in the face.” The allegation was denied by CTU.
Gates is quoted as saying, “In talking to my Stevenson brothers and sisters, I told them they should punch their principal in the face,” during a union meeting.
WTTW reported that Stevenson Elementary Principal William Hozian filed a police report to document Davis Gates’ “concerning” comments. Two witnesses provided statements to police about the CTU president’s statement made at a union meeting. No criminal charges were filed.
In response to these allegations, unidentified CTU spokespeople took to social media. They claimed that Gates’ comment about “punching” was figurative and not literal. They also labeled WTTW’s story as a “media provocation,” accusing it of intentionally mischaracterizing Gates’ impromptu comments.

Book 114 of 2021: Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
I really loved this quirky, dark, funny, heartfelt story. Ballister Blackheart is a villain. That's the role he plays, even though he and the hero, Ambrosius Goldenloin, trained together and used to be friends. When a shapeshifter named Nimona shows up, hyper-enthusiastic about carrying out some evil plans, she throws Blackheart's world into chaos, for better and for worse. I dunno, the main thing about this is how funny it is--and how well it walks the line between funny and genuinely moving.
What to read next: The World Ends in April, by Stacy McAnulty, for a middle grade novel that also executes a precision turn from funny to sincerely emotional.
