January 17 - how it relates to Mahiru's personality

I know that her birthday is long gone, but I just couldn't stop myself to not share some thoughts about this day! Every detail in Milgram has a meaning and even the dates the characters were born are giving us insight of their personality!

So without any further ado, let's state the implications that this day has to Mahiru's personality.

"People born on January 17 have incredible physical and emotional endurance."

Mahiru is a very strong person. Despite being beaten up, and having to endure horrible pain, she is still able to emphatise with the other prisoners. She doesn't hold a grudge against Kotoko, not even against Es. (She actually is encouraging Es to do what they want and think is right). She thinks that both are just following their ideals. And despite all the pain, physically and mentally, she can still stand her ground, not giving up on her beliefs and the way she perceives love.

"They trust their intuition more than their intellect."

Mahiru in her VDs describes herself as not being "a smart person". In the first VD, she explains to Es that she has a poor vocabulary, and often uses cliché phrases, most probably found from magasines, dramas and mangas. In the second VD, Mahiru demands Es to explain in a easier way his reasonings for choosing to not forgive her. (don't worry Mahiru, I think you are a smart person, if not academally, than definitely emotionally).

I think because of her self-esteem issues when it comes to her intelligence, and the way she carries herself in life, she tends to be more intuitive. Her decisions during the relationship, "the breakup rituals", the fact that she thinks that she fell in love with her bf "by fate/destiny". Her use of phrases that involves "her heart skipping a beat" alludes with the fact that she follows more her emotions and acts based on how she feels in the moment.

And again, standing up for her beliefs, when there is a chance to receive an unforgiven verdict, proves that she is acting based on what she fells is right.

"They enjoy looking outside of their realm of experience to find people who can show them life-lessons they may not otherwise learn."

Considering that in the first MV, she admits that she arrived recently in Tokyo, most probably to attend University, it shows that she went out of her confort zone, basically "she is looking outside of her realm of experience". Moving to a new city, means a change in lifestyle, meeting new people, discovering locations and gaining new knowledge.

For the people meeting part, in her case it can refer to her bf, from who she learned the beauty of love and tried different hobbies, such as running. But also to the beautician, the person Mahiru states that she gained tips from and considers her a friend and advisor.

"Romance is often unfulfilling: they demand loyalty, holding lovers to almost impossible standards."

Mahiru likes reading magasines and watching dramas, actively consuming such type of entertainment. As I stated in my previous analysis, these are easily changing perspectives and views about different topics. In this case, Mahiru wants a love that is similar to the ones in fiction, movies. So this part from the sentence "holding lovers to almost impossible stardars" makes a lot of sense with her character. Most dramas which have a happy ever after show a love that is sometimes too perfect, something that can be hard to reach. Her bf might have felt pressured about her views of love resulting in a lot of breakups and him wanting to cut ties with her.

Also Mahiru demands loyalty and this can be easily seen in her interrogation questions when she is asked her opinion about cheating.

"Have you ever had an affair?"

"No, never! Cheating is definitely out of question, right?! Right?!"

(sorry because I repeat this part, but I want to include all details!)

"Episodes from their childhood often become the building blocks of opportunity. They have a tendency to overindulge their youngsters to make up for what they didn't have."

Mahiru in the interrogation questions says that her parents were a little bit strict, calling herself a "sheltered girl". She refers to them with terms such as "mom", "dad", meaning that she has a somewhat good relationship with her parents, admitting her gratefulness for their care.

"Did you have a good relationship with your family?"

"I think I was what they call a "sheltered girl". I'm thankful to my mom and dad, but perhaps they were a little strict."

However, because they were too overprotective, a good example for that being that she had to attend an all girls school, Mahiru may have felt a little bit trapped. I think that her desire to experience true love and to travel a lot (as stated in the timeline conversion with Fuuta) comes from the small amount of interactions she had with other boys and maybe the little time she actually had for herself or much better to decide something for herself.

And If you think about it, she is described as having a carefree attitude, the opposite of a strict person. Even if this trait could be sometimes thought in a negative way as if the respective individual doesn't care that much in difficult circumstances, for Mahiru this is definitely not true! She is often shown taking care of others, being a moral support or saying nice things that are lightening the mood! Good examples are her conversation with Muu, in which she assures her that everything will be fine and offers her something sweet, talking with Amane about her parents and then complimenting her behavior and wishing to play with her. Topics that have nothing to do with Milgram, which makes the others to forget just a tiny bit that they are prisoners in a magical prison. Even Kazui is thanking her for doing these things, despite that Mahiru denies these implications.

"What are your thoughts on Amane's changes? "

"Secretly and systemically, they may spend years bending every effort toward a final goal. Money rarely plays a part in career choices for these people, but they have considerable ability to handle financial affairs."

From her first MV, we know that Mahiru works at a part-time job as a florist. And based on the multiple flower imagery in her MV, she likes flowers a lot. She even has a clothes full of flowers! Now, I know that Mahiru says that she doesn't actually know what career she will follow, so this is just me talking nonsense, probably. But I really feel like Mahiru would love to actually work in a flower shop in the future!

"January 17 people need to adopt goals that help them deal with their desires."

The goal we are talking about when it comes to Mahiru is finding true love. She desires to find happiness in a family, where she can be herself. Her first MV focuses on her journey of finding love, successfully being in a relationship, which unfortunately, collapses at the end...

Thank you for reading! This was actually supposed to be much longer... I wanted to analyse many other things about her, but I lost motivation... One day maybe, one day...

I FEEL LIKE RUNNING OUT OF TIME

Ini tulisan pertama yang mungkin akan membuatku lebih tenang. Mungkin akan terlihat seperti check point untukku.

Entah sudah sejak kapan, aku menyadari memiliki banyak ambisi besar untuk hidupku. Belakangan ini aku menyadari tidak mudah untuk mengontrol ambisi dalam hidupmu. Beberapa hal memang terlihat remeh dan tidak masuk akal, sayangnya aku tidak perduli akan hal itu. Ujaran orang yang meremehkan mimpiku semakin membuatku giat menekuni hal tersebut.

Makin giat diriku menjalani hidup dengan ambisi, makin tak terbendung juga rasa ingin mewujudkannya. Seperti bongkahan salju yang tiap berputar makin membesar. Perasaan ini rasanya sudah tak terbendung dan hampir meledak. Tiap kali satu ambisi terwujud makin tinggi juga stardar hidup yang ingin kuwujudkan. Namun sayangnya aku memelihara ambisi ini tanpa tahu kapan harus berhenti dan beristirahat. Membuatku tidak tenang dan hampa.

Akankah ambisi ini ada ujungnya? Aku kembali mempertanyakan kenapa aku harus memenuhi ambisi ini dalam hidupku. Bukankah seharusnya memenuhi keinginanmu akan membuatmu senang?

Namun sayangnya kekosongan yang kudapatkan kali ini. Hidup dengan rasa sakit dan air mata yang ku lalui demi mewujudkan ambisiku rasanya tidak sepadan dengan rasa puas yang kudapat. Mengapa begitu ya? Padahal awal aku menentukan goals dalam hidup karena aku ingin bahagia ketika mendapatkannya.

Rasa bahagia itu rasanya kian menjauh. Mengapa aku harus melalui semua ini dengan banyak pengorbanan tanpa mendapat apa-apa?

Dilema untuk terus mengkompromikan standar hidupku. Apakah ambisi ini masih sesuai dengan tujuan awal ketika aku merencanakannya?

Bagaimanapun, kekosongan ini rasanya kian lama kian menggerogotiku. Hatiku hampir kehilangan cahayanya.

Mungkin aku harus mulai membiasakan untuk tidak terburu-buru melakukan semua hal sekaligus. I don't have to feel like I'm running out of time.

14th day of writing

Yesterday I ended my writing at a turning point. I sort of knew what I was going for, but I was already tired and didn’t want to spend another hour or so writing.

So today I ended that thought. It didn’t take that much time and it’s a little cheat I gave myself, but hey, at least I wrote something today.

I continued that encounter with Death. I tried using colours to express my protagonist’s feelings. I also foreshadowed her third and final encounter, as well as what needs to happens next in order for their deal to stand. 

I like what’s coming out. I starting to see a little outline to the whole thing. It’s still a little rough, like I don’t know how to fill the gaps of the Major Events, but I can finally see the size of it. I’m glad with how it’s going.

I reblogged earlier today a post about Very Gentle Writing. I thrive in structured, stardarized situations, but I keep needing to remind myself I don’t need to get an A at creative writing. It’s not a class at school, it’s not a competition, there’s no one but me. Keeping the habit is better than trying to be the best. So, I’ll try to be gentler with myself in the future.

And by future I mean today.

And by gentler I mean I’ll stop beating myself up because I haven’t finished yet.

Would it be okay to cosplay as Clone sailors!!!?? I have been looking for a cosplay (because my stardares are impossible high) and this just makes me feel some kinda way!!!!!

My dude the Sailor Troopers started out as a cosplay :’D I’m on mobile and can’t link at the moment but if you go into the tag for it on my blog you can see the Cody and Rex ones my friend and I did, along with the fabulous Sailor Vader that inspired us. This batch of doodles actually started because I was thinking of making Echo (specifically so I could pester a cosplay aquaintance who is working on legit ARC Fives armor), which is why there are some oddly specific construction notes, especially about types of shoes I happen to already own and covers I could make for them XD But anyway YES!!! YES PLEASE COSPLAY MORE SAILOR TROOPERS AND POST PICTURES!! :DDDD

Julian set down his mug, settling into a chair in the replimat.

Garak said distractedly, “Hm?”

“The wife of a highly regarded federation senator. Or a projection of her personality, anyway. I couldn't understand his fascination with that woman. Fenna. They'd only just met, and he worked so hard to save her. I think he thought he was in love with her.”

Julian hesitated.

“Then Jake reminded me of the date. It was the fourth anniversary of Jennifer's death. Today would be the sixth.”

Garak started to ask why he kept track, but he knew.

They were both silent for a few moments.

Garak put his hand on Julian's.

“There was nothing you could do.”

“Somehow, that doesn't make it any easier.”

2374, in a runabout heading back to DS9

Julian, Garak, Worf and Martok were in a runabout fleeing from the Dominion internment camp.

Julian shouted, “Take us to maximum warp. We've got to get a message back to the station. Who knows what damage the changling has already done if he's still impersonating me.”

“If he's anything like you, my dear, any attempts at subterfuge will be quite easy to see through.”

Julian looked at him, half laughing, as Garak piloted the runabout at maximum warp. There was no response to their hails.

Julian went briefly to sickbay to attend to Worf and Martok and despite their objections, he sedated them. Their injuries were severe, and their bodies needed time to heal.

Joining Garak on the bridge, he asked “Any word from the station?”

“Comm traffic has been strangely silent in this area of space.”

“That doesn't make any sense. Cardassia just joined the Dominion. There should be communication between Starfleet command, the Bajorans, Klingons, Romulans… is there really nothing?"

Garak nodded, puzzled.

“Bring up long range sensors.”

There was a starship in the distance.

Julian struggled to read the designation.

“NCC 1701-d?” he said in disbelief.

“Care to fill me in, doctor?”

Distracted, Julian asked, “Computer, what is the stardate?”

“Stardare 44000.1”

Looking incredulous, he asked, “Are you sure?”

It was a ridiculous question, but the computer responded anyway.

“Affirmative. The Stardate is 44000.1."

Garak spoke.

"If I'm correct, that's nearly seven years ago. But the sensors must be faulty. Remind me to have a talk with Chief Obrien when we get back to the station.”

Julian stared into the distance, almost in a trance.

Garak finally broke the silence.

“What is it, my dear?”

“Stardate 44000.1."

“Yes, doctor, we've already established that.”

“You don't understand.”

“Enlighten me then.”

“If we're truly in 2367, in two days, there will be a battle killing more than 11,000 people and destroying 39 starships. No, not a battle. A massacre.”

“Federation history isn't really one of my strengths.”

“Wolf 359. The Borg slaughtered thousands of people. Including Captain Siskos wife. Jennifer.”

Paradigma Keren & Self-Actualization Remaja

Aktivitas mingguan saya dimulai pagi ini, sebelum matahari naik dan memanas saya sudah berkemas untuk pergi bekerja, istri pun sudah menyiapkan makanan sebagai cadangan energi saya untuk mengajar. Ditemani termos berisi kopi, ransel berisi buku cetak pelajaran matematika, dan sorban yang sengaja saya jadikan masker untuk melindungi napas dari letupan knalpot kendaraan. Menyusur dingin pagi Kota Bandung dengan setumpuk hiruk pikuk para penjemput rejeki yang lain.

Sudah menjadi Standart Operation Procedure saya dalam mengajar, memberi suguhan motivasi kepada adik-adik murid, bisa sebentuk kisah atau sejarah tokoh-tokoh dunia, kisah saya sendiri, kisah teman, atau yang paling seru (mengalihkan ngantuk) yaitu berkisah cerita horor nan mistis hehe. Memang menjadi kegemaran remaja dalam rentan usia sekian (11-13) tahun untuk menyntap lautan informasi, terutama mereka yang bersekolah di sekolah basis pesantren. Menjadi tugas guru, pegawai, dan pembina asrama untuk memperkaya khazanah informasi mereka. Yang pastinya harus positif.

“Remaja itu belum bisa memilah. Lihat enak, kelihatan bagus, yah ambil.”

Itu perkataan rekan saya di sekolah, saat rapat guru sedang berlangsung. Benar juga, saya pun pernah merasa di posisi ‘Apa yang enak, yah sikat !’. Menjadi tanggung jawab moral guru untuk menyuguhkan sesuatu yang sebenarnya gak enak tapi dikemas enak bias anak-anak mikir ‘Nih enak, sikat !’. Oke terkadang kudu putar otak, bolak-balik badan, terkadang bengong sendiri kalau sudah habis materi. Yah pola hidup yang umum rasanya dialami pengajar, wabil khusus mereka yang benar mau merubah murid mereka menjadi murid yang tak hanya masuk kelas tapi terbina di kelas.

Pagi tadi saya mulai bercerita tentang Flat Earth Theory. Suatu hal yang tidak kalah viralnya dari pembahasan ‘Om Telolet Om’ dan ‘Osas’ yang saya bisa tebak menjadi pembicaraan ramai murid-murid saya musim ini. Aha, benar saja. Memang kudu pinter-pinter cara trend yang ada, seaneh dan gak penting apapun, tokh boleh jadi itu penting untuk hal yang lain. Oke, saya tidak mau berlama-lama menuliskan pandangan saya tentang Flat Earth disini, tapi lebih ke intinya saja bahwa Al-Quran membantah teori tersebut dan harapan saya untuk membangun mereka untuk menjadi remaja yang berparadigma keren dalam kamus dan stardar syar’i. 

Krisis standardisasi keren. Maksudnya apa ? Saya pernah SMP, saya ngerasain gimana rasanya bergaul dengan orang-orang keren dan kecipratan pesona walau tak banyak-banyak teuing. Bagi saya saat itu menilik dari realita sosial yang saya hadapi, standar keren itu saat kita bisa macarin salah satu anak cheerleader, keren itu kalau bisa ngerokok (lebih keren kalau diijinin orangtua), keren itu kalau nongkrong sampai tengah malam sampai subuh udah mengap-mangap, keren itu kalau pernah track record berkelahi banyak, keren itu kalau stylish dan modis, dan keren itu kalau punya motor modif (edan, ini kudu ada modal cuy).

Dalam Piramida Maslow, self-actualization dijadikan puncak dari piramid, menjadi puncak dari apa yang manusia kejar. Ada yang bilang remaja saatnya mencari jatih diri, kalau menurut saya remaja itu lebih tepatnya menetapkan diri, pemantapannya di masa SMA. Self-actualization adalah kecenderungan seseorang untuk merasa dihargai, keberadaannya mau dianggap ada, dan peran mereka mau dianggap berarti. Wajar ? Sangat wajar, sebab itu manusiawi. Adalah jalannya berbeda-beda untuk mencapai hal itu, ada yang mencari Self-Actualization digerombolan anak begal, loh kenapa ? Yah boleh jadi anak itu merasa dihargai dan ternilai di kerumunan begal. Ada yang mencari hal itu di kumpulan remaja mesjid, kenapa ? Yah boleh jadi karena merasa dihargai dan dinilai disana.

Kembali ke apa yang rekan saya katakan, bahwa remaja cenderung melihat dalam sudut pandang ‘Ini enak nih ! Sikat’. Dalam kasus tersebut sudah menjadi tugas moral pemuda yang telah melewati masa itu untuk memahamkan dan mewadahi wadah self-actualization yang baik untuk mereka. Kalau sudah tercemar ? Rekonstruksi standar ‘keren’ mereka (remaja) bahwa apa itu keren. Ngebuat lingkungan untuk mengembangkan self-actualization mereka itu sangat penting. Karena kalau tidak maka yang akan mengaktualisasi diri mereka adalah mereka yang berkiprah sebagai preman.

Saya tegaskan ke mereka. 

“Sejago-jagonya kalian ngerokok, walau udah punya skil ngevape untuk baut nama kalian gak ada tuh ceritanya 10 tahun kemudian kalian diundang di acara Hitam Putih buat ngisi acara karena terinspirasi sama kalian.” 

Saya katakan lagi “Kalian jago ngerokok ? Yakali pabrik rokok ngelamar kalian, yang ada duit kalian digrogot ! Tapi coba deh kalian hafal Quran. DKM Masjid bakal bondong-bondong ngelamar kalian jadi imam masjid cuy.”

Saya mengajar ilmu alam, matematika. Saya tegaskan bahwa saya seorang muslim, saya beriman saya kitab suci Al-Quran, saya tunduk sama taklimat menyembah Tuhan yang satu. Saya jelaskan bahwa apa sih guna matematika ? For Your Information, dek. Saat ini ulama berkelebat soal fiqih ama tasawuf tok. Dalam suatu riset Al-Quran yang dilakukan Pak Agus Purwanto D.Sc, ia menemukan ada 800 ayat dalam Al-Quran yang berbicara soal alam, 160 ayat soal hukum. Artinya ayat yang menyinggung alam 5x lebih banyak dari hukum. Terus berapa banyak umat Muslim yang mendamparkan diri di dunia sains dengan tujuan memperteguh keIslaman ? Sangat sedikit ! Kita mengenal Abdus-Salam yang menemukan teori unifikasi medan dan meraih nobel. 

Di akhir, saya berpesan. “Next time, saya mau kalian membuktikan Isra’ Miraj secara sains. Buktikan 10 tahun kemudian eheh.” Itu pesanku kepada mereka yang masih unyu-unyu dan lagi menetapkan jati diri. Alam semesta yang berapa dua realita, fisik dan meta fisik harus terbukti dalam penjelasan saintifik yang ujungnya memperteguh keimanan. Nah itu tugasnya.
