A little drabble for the solstice

Some days, they surround themselves with wick and tallow lights, chasing away the thick, starless dark.

Some days, John welcomes the darkness, burrows into it, like he burrows into the arms of Teyla, Ronon and Rodney, burying himself in their shared furs like a seed into the earth.

McKay’s impatient for the weeks-long midwinter night to be over so they can make their escape from this world.

John’s not so sure: he never hibernated before, and god, he needs it, more than he realised.

Magic can happen here. When you plant something in the earth, cover it over and wait.

This last week was emotionally difficult. I had a tea with an old friend who I'm not comfortable being open with, a funeral for a beloved friend I will miss terribly, Mother's day (good because I love my Mom, and am blessed by lots of wonderful friends who are moms, hard because I've been unable to have children of my own, and a very dear friend of mine has had the most difficult miscarriage), and my birthday. (I struggle with chronically wanting to both be seen and not seen, so birthdays are both fun and stressful.)

As I've struggled through this week I've talked to several dear friends, letting them carry little parts of my sorrow, fears, and burdens.

I have to say, I'm blessed with a whole slew of wonderful friends and each and everyone of them went out of their way to help me through this week, in a slew of different ways, so I'm feeling very blessed. (That includes some of you on here, even unawares, you helped me.)

Watching through Stargate Atlantis has made me hyper-aware of the importance of friendship, has made me more vigilant about my friends, both caring for them and letting them care for me.

Reading a chapter in Return of the King, I was struck by the constant contrast of despair brought by the Nazgul and the 'foolishness' of hope brought by Gandalf.

Both of these stories showcase great warriors who defend their people at all cost, the ultimate acts of love and friendship

So, with a thousand pistons firing, I connected all these lines from songs and such together this morning trying to express my feelings of simply having wonderful friends, of the importance of hope, and my love of warriors who get us all home.

I know this will mean nothing, right now, anyway. Buuut I figured I’d have to share, so it’s not straight out of left field. But in my bio I mentioned I write fanfiction but it’s on archive of our own and I have NO interest in bringing those here, as of this moment. I should mention that I have only ever written for Science fiction like Stargate Atlantis, Stargate, Star Wars (Mandalorian), etc… But I have three maybe five things I have in my drafts right now that I do plan to bring to this page.

1. Manwe Tolkien One shot. Platonic reader/OC? I haven’t quite figured that out.

2. Glorfindel x OC Tolkien Short Story. Friends to lovers

3. Lindir x reader? One Shot cause he was the first elf to drag me into the dark corners of Tolkien. Wanted to honor him a little.

4. Alucard x reader/OC? Again I haven’t figured it out but I think it’ll be a one shot that boosts itself into a short story tbh. This is Castlevania.

Now for the fifth one I am torn. On the right hand I want to write a short story for my sister starring her favorite elf Legolas (despite my personal feelings about said elf. there’s nothing wrong with him but there’s just so much of him that I am bored. Besides why stare at that guy when you got people like Glorfindel or Sauron or Maglor or Eonwe or Namo. So many far more interesting elves/others and she picks that one?? Like why????)

Or on the left hand I can write a Stardew valley short story that will also be starring her favorite character, Sebastian. Either way the fifth one belongs to my sister. I’d do both but I’m limiting myself to five thank God.

These might come out during December or sometime in January but I just wanted to put this out there so It’s not out of no where.

The Mandalorian Chapter 12 rewatch thoughts

- I would like to thank them for keeping in din’s harried yet triumphant ‘hAH!!’ when he gets the explosives to stick to gideon’s ship in the ‘hey remember when this happened last season’ section, that was a nice gesture from the showrunners to me personally, I assume

- this episode actually helped me find more enjoyment in the last one, because it’s such a nice reassurance that even though they’re pulling in more stuff from other star wars media this show won’t suddenly stop being its own thing and mando won’t suddenly stop being himself and it’s very comforting to me somehow haha

- the small hesitation before din calls out “do you... do you have the wire?” lol lol lol he’s completely aware of the bizarreness of what he’s doing here but hey being alive is already so damn weird etc. 

the softness of his voice the whole way through and the fact that he never, never blames the baby for not being able to do what shouldn’t really be asked of him in the first place, tho... ;____;  

- the tiny exasperated head tilt din does when he realizes the hatch isn’t going to extend all the way fdslkfhasdlashfs  

- din is looking down at the baby the entire time while greef talks to the mechanics ❤️❤️❤️

(the baby seems pretty drawn to/excited to see greef again and mando seems to notice which is extremely cute. he’s becoming really good at tuning in with the kid) 

he also greets cara baby first in much the same way as he does peli, like he knows what the main attraction here is lol, they do a very sweet bro nod at each other. god I wish gina carano wasn’t so terrible imagine if we could just have this BrOTP without hesitations :( 

I think greef is actually a bit worried to begin with after seeing the ship, he sort of takes din in intently before he huffs a little laugh and grabs his arm. it must be a bit stressful to be his friend and not be able to see his expression right away when you worry something might be seriously wrong haha

- people are finally treating the baby like you would a real baby and it’s such a blessing, everyone talking and cooing at him and baby babbling back

(I wonder if greef has children of his own? he does have an undeniable air of experienced grandpa about him in this episode, it’s adorable)  

- din does so much talking -- unprompted, even! -- these days, it truly is an embarrassment of riches 

- capital E Emotional about this shot with IG-11 right behind din and cara inviting him into the school in front of him. some past carried with us into the future shit going on here  

IG-11′s legacy’s still got our back y’all :’) I swear to god if gideon blows up nevarro at some point I’m going to lose it 

the ‘oh yeah?/that so?’ way din leans his head back after she says “wait until you see inside” is also amazing

- baby reaching out his hand like ‘can have?’ is so polite ;______; he takes after his father (including in the ‘fool me twice, I’ll fuck you up’ department haha. listen you get one chance to be cool about it and then no more mr nice mando/baby)

- I can’t work out what anything on greef’s desk is supposed to be, but if that’s a computer it’s got to be older than even the razor crest lol

he truly has next to no defense against people he actually likes asking him for something huh lol. well a self care co-op mission clearly did him a world of good in this one at least it’s all fine

- “I’m starting to dehydrate, Boss” is an excellent line and delivered perfectly, I cackle every time (”You park your gills right there until I say otherwise” is a good runner up too) 

- it’s so nice to see the small moments of communication between them in this one after mando was so out of sync with the team in the last one (and tbf those guys didn’t even try to give him any pointers at all, they really left him to flounder through the whole thing if you watch it carefully haha)

- the mythrol’s jacket still looks so comfy, I want one

- aaaaah the way din says “I don’t like this” is just so... hnnngh it’s perfect, there’s a vulnerability and openness to it for a moment. greef glances over at him like he hasn’t heard him sound like this before too, which just sells it even more

you know shit’s fucked up when din djarin expresses an emotion without even being forced to by circumstance (I think what I mean is that it’s actually really rare for him to state how he feels about something just to do it, usually his communication is more practically oriented, more along ‘I think this is the best cause of action because of a and b’ lines, or like when he tells omera he’s grateful it’s... more to inform her of it and make sure she knows than to express himself? but he’s starting to do it more with people he trusts now and it gets me in the heart? man I’m finding this hard to articulate let’s move on lol)

- I really, really wonder about pershing’s position in all of this. his plea for the child’s life did sound genuine -- he did try to guard him with his own noodly scientist body when he thought din was out to hurt him, remember -- but is that only because he knows he’s in deep shit himself without the blood the baby can give? is he maybe not quite cool with whatever gideon has him doing? (he does sound quite strained when he talks about the ‘body’ rejecting the transfusion and the ‘volunteer’ potentially suffering the same fate... hm.)

idk why I want there to be something redeemable in him so bad, maybe it’s just my weird yet enduring attachment to ladon radim in stargate atlantis messing with me they’re kind of similar in some ways (yeah don’t ask me I don’t know either sometimes the heart wants what it wants in ways reason can’t explain)

- tfw ur literally launching yourself across a pool of boiling lava because you’re Dad and your baby’s in danger T__________T he just does not stop running towards that kid for even a single second help

- there’s something so innocently pure and... old fashioned? about the scene with mythrol and greef screaming the entire time they drive off the cliff, it feels like something out of a movie from like three decades ago. that whole segment feels a bit like that, it’s just there to be fun and that’s okay sometimes

- every dog fight in every movie should have a baby nonchalantly snacking on a cookie in them, it elevates the experience immeasurably (he squishes his nose a little bit with the macaron when he misses his mouth at one point, which is more than anyone should be expected to bear honestly)

I love that even all fixed up again the razor crest groans and creaks like an old tired thing when din makes it flip to dive, he 100% did take out a bunch of ferraris in his stalwart morris minor of a spaceship and I treasure him     

- there’s so much life and emotion in din’s voice here I can’t!!!! I simply can’t!!!! imagine if we get to hear him openly laugh one day, would I even survive it??!!!!

 also the kid makes such pitch perfect ‘having my lil nose wiped and whining about it’ baby noises when din uses his cape to clean him up (din does turn the autopilot on before he turns around to deal with it, for those who, like me, worry about these things) 

- between carson showing up and the stuff the droid talks about in the lesson they’re doing quite a bit of outer rim vs. core worlds theme building in this one, I wonder if this is going to ramp up more or what

- god but gideon’s theme SLAPS tho 

he’s probably going to try to fuck up everything I love but you can’t fault him on the tunes he’s going to do it to

John and the team’d been trying to make a trade for food and McKay had taken offence at some yellow fruit that had an unfortunate resemblance to a lemon, and turned out to have an even more unfortunate status as sacred. He'd thrown the fruit in question back in their hosts' faces, or at least forcibly pushed away the platter, resulting in copious juiciness all over the serving boy. And as team leader, it was up to John to make the profuse apology, take the fall, or in this case, endure the humiliation of having to kneel before an altar for hours upon end, thanking the Gods for their most delicious fruit and rubbing sticky yellow pulp into his hair and face.

John had been fuming by the time they'd let him and his team go, firstly because sitting on the hard stone floor for that long was hell on the knees, secondly because he suspected his skin had just got started on a nasty reaction to the juicy moisturizer, thirdly because the locals hadn't given him a crib-sheet and he'd had to improvise his fruit-praising invocation and fourthly, because certain beneficiaries of his self-sacrifice seemed to find his situation amusing.

He'd begun with "Uh, yeah, so thanks for the real nice fruit. It's, uh, just so cool. Tastes a bit like that Kiwi-strawberry Gatorade, which isn't my favourite, but hey, each to their own. Anyway, yeah, real cool fruit. Um…" At that point there had been a suppressed explosion behind him, which he recognised as a McKay expression of mirth. John had gritted his teeth and continued, determinedly, touching on the fruit's colour (summed up as yellowy yellowiness), its texture (like a melon but wetter) and expounding at length on the pungent juice which he was sure must be good for his hair and wasn't stinging his eyes, no, not one bit, no sir.

Rodney had giggled and sniggered through it all and John had felt his face redden both from anger and the irritant juice. His voice had shaken with tamped-down rage so that when at long last a gong was struck signalling the end of his purgatory, the locals had bowed to him and told him that they had never heard such a passionate speech. He’d sniffed and wiped away tears from his streaming eyes, which streamed even more from the juice on his hands, and the priests had blessed him for his extreme piety and they’d got a decent trade deal after all.

That’s only for actual Actual fics that i have sequestered away in my google docs though hmm the count would be,, a whole lot higher if you also included my rambling on the au masterlist, plenty of which do have actual drabbles hidden inside them?

this is also only counting the umbrella academy content lmao i’m not going to go and count up my cat roleplay words or my magic and monsters world from my other blog or, god forbid, the words from all the numerous essays i’ve had to write this year

15.  something you learned this year

About writing or just in general? I guess I learned that it’s okay to take care of myself instead of worrying what people are gonna think if I just vanish for a few weeks at a time lmao

I definitely learned that I make lots of spelling errors and mistakes in my writing and that just yeeting it into the abyss is fun but I always inevitably read back through it and make little edits later because i’m a Fool

I learned. a lot about the DSM? I can now list off the criteria for PTSD from memory which is kind of cool but also why Dr. Essman. Why do you hate us like this.

For star wars i liked shifting sands and have you heard (we could have had a stormtrooper revolution y’all. we could have had it all.) and i genuinely can’t wait for fialleril to start publishing anabasis, i don’t think it’s up yet but you can read snippets on their blog! i love all their lore and worldbuilding tbh

UHHH all the retold fairytales that shanastoryteller does i recommend reading - i love seeing where things go and the word choice and sentence structures?? i would die for them tbh, and gods and monsters (a retelling of greek mythos) is absolutely fantastic and a good one to read and read again

for atla I mean i’ll always recommend embers but i’m excited to see where salvage goes. i haven’t even seen stargate atlantis but i really enjoy this crossover fic with atla, the dragon king’s temple?

if we’re going old school then I really liked this naruto fic what you knead because Kakashi is my fav and he deserves healthy coping mechanisms and ear to the wall bc i’m secretly very fond of time travel fics

I liked this person of interest fic bc it was cute - you got your reviewer in my assassinchef because i rewatched that show this year sort of (i never finish it but i get pretty far usually)

this leverage fic, audience: 822,000 and homeland security, was really cute and I love the ot3 of eliot, hardison, and parker bless i need to rewatch leverage again

finally for umbrella academy (the content you’re all here for) I really enjoyed breathe, come and pick me up, along the corridor and up the stairs (i love all ur fics but this one has a special place in my heart), taking it slow (that’s how it goes), there are stones in my stomach and worms on my plate (i lied before it’s this one that has the most special place in my heart), traumaversary, this years love, the sky weeps series, and many many more but this is already getting long and i’m pretty sure the prompt was only supposed to be one fic oops
