the romances in hatchetfield fuck me up so bad like. every time. like youve got:
the most normal couple of all time, except one of them always seems to understand when the world is going to end and they inevitably are driven apart by something out of their control.
two grungy teens/young adults who will never get a happy ending so long as theyre together
a woman who everyone forgets and the man who falls in love with her every time he meets her again and again and again.
high school sweethearts haunted by their pasts and sometimes their futures, too.
a nerd and a 'cool kid', who just keep trying to sacrifice themselves for each other despite something interrupting them every time.
romance is not dead in hatchetfield! except for the fact that it usually ends up dying horribly and tragically.

i think part of why npmd works so well is bc the nerdy prudes are all kinda real af??? like... i dressed just like pete in highschool and have pictures to prove it. for better or for worse, watching richie in certain scenes was like fondly cringing at my past self. ruth's reflexive "don't bully me!" and their collective tendency to assume the worst whenever the popular kids talk to them (and the realisation that not all of them are bad, actually, some of them - like steph - are really cool)... god. it's so real. painfully so, at times

I love how The trail to Oregon! is one of the goofiest shows ever and yet, in the middle of it you get When the world's at stake which is a genuinely heartfelt, passionate and heartbreaking (not to mention amazing) song about a mother and all her hardships and traumas and then it goes back to being completely unserious. This is a perfect representation of what it's like to talk to your mom

Absolutely love that the hatchetfield series brought so many new fans to starkid but I wish people would let non hatchetfield things be non hatchetfield and not try relate it back to it all the time

Fanart of a scene from this fanfic by @dollarstoreartsupplies ! Once again the "Tinky as Peter's imaginary friend" AU. Baby Pete is so cute in it! He deserves better. I like the idea that Tinky appeared more cute and doll-like when Peter was a child and became more freaky as Peter got older.

also adding onto the discussions of max and grace being a strangely perfect match for each other, I find it quite interesting that what corrupted Max into a murderous monster can more or less be paralleled with Grace's fall from grace at the end.
Like, Max - self-proclaimed god of the nighthawks with an obsession with using his power to keep things according to HIS idea of order - turns into a literal fucking monster when he actually gets access to supernatural powers and he uses them for his enjoyment and in keeping people in line: be it in killing a finally-socially-accepted Richie, a Ruth who just took the first step in overcoming her anxiety, and in terrorizing Pete and Steph in their attempts to end Max's rampage on their own terms.
So, doesn't this sound quite familiar with Grace - a deeply religious sheltered girl who was quire controlling of behavior that did not seem pure be it from other's horniness at homecoming dances or from her own sexual awakening just for the sake of divine pre-marital purity and chastity - who ALSO turns murderous when given access to the power of the Lords in Black which she then learns to use to start ridding the world of people she deems "dirty" for the sake of enforcing HER idea of order: in other words, a world of chastity.
so um yea powerful teens with control freak issues and god complexes woo match made in heaven

I think it’s interesting how the message of NPMD is very positively nihilistic. The whole “you’re not a nerd because you’re nerdy, you’re a nerd because I said so” speech Max has outside of Pasquali’s is the centerpiece of the whole show, telling us everything we need to know about every character.
Like, the nerds aren’t bullied because they’re nerdy or weird, they’re bullied because one power tripping teenager decided that they would be. And the same thing goes for the cool kids: the only reason they have power is because it’s granted to them by Max, and he’s shown that he can easily take it away. It doesn’t matter how hard they try to fit in, nothing will change.
But that’s also kind of beautiful? Because that means while it’s kind of pointless to fight against this fake social hierarchy, it also kind of encourages these kids to be authentic to themselves. Nerds can freely enjoy their own interests, and the jocks can enjoy theirs.
Either way, Max doesn’t care. He’ll designate you however he pleases with no regard to who you try to be. So, why not just be yourself?
