She butts her head against Bucky’s arm when she needs attention, she nuzzles against his hand when she wants to be pet — but recently, she’s been doing something new. More and more often, whenever Bucky finds himself laying in bed or sprawled out on the couch, Alpine will come over and burrow under his shirt, curling up next to him.

He has to admit, it’s pretty cute when it first happens. It starts becoming strange the second time. And by the third, Bucky’s downright confused.

“Tony,” Steve breathed, as he did another lap of the room, taking his time to admire the easel set up in one corner and the stacks of blank canvases by the window. There wasn’t any furniture in the quaint, cozy brownstone, at least not yet, but there were more than a few wooden crates overflowing with paint and brushes and sketchbooks lined up along the wall. “This is way too much.”

Tony just offered a casual wave of his hand. “Oh, c’mon, I’m sure you’ll use it all up eventually,” he said from his spot in the doorway, where he’d been taking in Steve’s reaction with a pleased grin. “You go through pencils quicker than you go through punching bags, no harm in having a little extra.”

Steve shook his head, gawking at the boxes of art supplies tucked away neatly just for him, still slightly overwhelmed by the sight of it all. Everything Steve had ever mentioned wanting, even in passing, was here, from a homey studio in the heart of Brooklyn to his favorite brand of watercolors, and while all of the thought that Tony had clearly put into this was very much appreciated—and heart-meltingly touching—Steve was having trouble wrapping his mind around the scale of it.

Over the course of their relationship, Tony had given him some pretty extravagant gifts, but nothing as big as a four-story art studio.

A Secret Garden

It took Bucky longer than it should have to realize what was happening to Tony.  That the floral scent he’d assumed came from his companion’s clothing (or a woman) was in fact coming from very close to Tony’s heart.

It took Bucky longer than it should have to realize what was happening to Tony. At first, he thought the faint floral scent he noticed when standing next to Tony was just a new clothes detergent he was trying out or (as the darker part of his mind suggested) leftover perfume from a one night stand.

But it was stronger the next time he stopped by, and Tony looked a little paler than usual. “You feelin’ okay, champ?” Bucky asked, and Tony flinched, just a little.

“Yeah - just getting run a bit ragged,” Tony replied, a little too casually. “We’ve got a big product launch at the end of the month and I’m having to tie up a lot of loose ends personally.”

“Thought that was Ms. Potts’ job,” Bucky responded, frowning slightly at his companion’s reply. For Tony to admit he was burning his candle at both ends, well that meant he likely wasn’t getting any real rest at all.

“R&D is still my bailiwick, and I know exactly where and how to goose the teams in order to –” Tony interrupted himself with a cough, wet and hacking. He grabbed a shop rag off the nearby bench and held it to his lips for a moment, then stuffed it into a pocket. “Sorry. Just a tickle in my throat. It’s not contagious.”

“I’ll take your word on that.” A burst of scent had accompanied Tony’s cough, and Bucky’s sharp eyes had spotted a tell-tale blood red petal hanging from the edge of the rag. He knew what that meant; or at least what it used to mean. Bucky made a mental note that – once he was alone, that is – to ask JARVIS if hanahaki disease was still something people could suffer from.

This is a fill for today's  @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt [#FFF188 Where Secrets Lie].  I plan on expanding this by the end of the month to fill my Tony Stark Bingo Secret Admirer square, combining a prompt from   @lacrimulafalsa  (see below cut) and ideas from @hddnone‘s excellent (and angsty!) WinterIron hanahaki fic Seeds of Love .

happy belated new year, everyone! now that 2022 is over, I’m back with my annual self-rec list! I honestly missed doing these -- in 2021 I hadn’t written any fic at all, and I’m really happy that I’ve managed to get back into it this year. I still didn’t write any longer fics that I’d usually post to ao3, but I did manage some ficlets.

It made sense, with the way Bruce had proposed weekly team dinners once they’d all moved into the Tower; the way he always offered to come along whenever Nat announced that she was going on a grocery run or Steve mentioned a new bakery he wanted to try out; the way he gravitated toward the common areas, though primarily the kitchen, as if waiting to be joined by someone else in silent companionship.

But now, Tony could see that he was only half-right.

Because Bruce’s real love language was food.

PoliZ's WIP Update: 7 Feb 2024

A busy IRL week, which cut into my writing time/energy.   I  touched  4 fics (1 new works & 3 WIPs) for a total of 1525 words.

I’m juggling  19  😬 active/semi-active WIPs with my current  deadlines being the Tony Stark Bingo & Stony AU Bingo which both wrap in mid-February.    

See  below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc.  As always, feel free to send me   prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding  any of these projects  or any other WIPs I’ve got out there.   Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Bucky Barnes Bingo  - [BBB_R5]   (Ends 10 31 Jan 2024)

Ended up with twenty-six fills  and  an assisted blackout!   Masterpost coming some time this week. 

Tony Stark Bingo Round 7  - [TSB_R7]   (ends 15 Feb)

Twenty-six  fills and two WIPs as of the moment  - getting an assisted blackout, thanks to a couple of adopted squares! 

* A2 - KINK: Concubine -  This will get filled with Chapter Two of  The Sultan’s Gifts  whic will also fills my SAUB Gentle Dom square and the Build a Bucky Bingo February prompt Fingering.  It’s coming in at 1065 words and will post on Friday.  A third smutty chapter (filling my SRB Multiple Submissives squares) is  currently sitting at 441 words.  

* K5 - AU: Anime - I had Vague Ideas of doing a “Battle of the Planets” (my first anime and a childhood favorite)  fusion, with Tony as Princess, Steve as Mark and Bucky as Jason - but wasn’t sure who to put in as  Tiny (Happy? Thor?) or  Keyop (Vision?) -  JARVIS would have been their 7-Zark- 7 of course….  if I have time/spoons/inspiration - I may do something with this.   

* Jan Adoptable: Enemies to Lovers -  working to fit this into another Flash Fiction Friday-inspired fic -  To Earn the Dragon’s Heart  was written for prompt  [#FFF237 A Fool’s Quest] and will also fill my SAUB AU: Fantasy square.  The fic is inspired by CoffeeOwl’s really cool dragon!Steve/ indebted!Tony prompt in the STB Discord server.  The expansion is up to 1045 words and will hopefully be posted on the 14th.  

Stony AUniverse Bingo  [SAUB_R1] (ends 15 Feb)

Another brand-new bingo I’m helping co-mod!   I’m up to fourteen  fills, four  WIPs and several  crossover ideas in play.  Not sure I’m going to get a blackout - but I’ll do my best!  

* S1 - Edging - Posted  Ringing In the New to Ao3 on Monday -  where Tony makes a suggestion to Steve improve/change up their love life. It crossed over with a Flash Fiction Friday prompt: How Do You Use ‘It’? and came in at 335 words.

* S3 - AU: Wings -  think I need to pivot on this - maybe I’ll be self-indulgent and do a second remix of some part of Take What Was Wrong (And Make it Right) from Steve’s POV - since  the first remix  is Bucky POV (and therefore tricky to make Stony-focused) 

* S5 - Accidental Baby Acquisition - see BBB Yelena Belova  - this may have to come off the table/pivot to something else.  

* T1 - AU: Fantasy -  see TSB  Enemies to Lovers. 

* T2 - Adopting a Cat - combined this with a Flash Fiction Friday prompt  [#FFF236 Fight or Flight]  for  Feline Fight and Flight  - which will probably get a better title before I post it to Ao3.😁 This No Powers established Stony ficlet - where Tony’s rescuing a stray cat and Steve helps out -  came in at  390 words. 

* T4 - AU: Canon Divergence -  Filled this with  On the Edge of Disaster -  a  CA:CW last-minute partial fix-it from Steve’s POV that also filled a Flash Friday Fic fill   [#FFF209 On the Edge] as well as my SRB Fix-It square.  I’ve gotten one cranky comment on it already.  🙄🙄🙄

* O2 - Omegaverse - I have a Vague Idea inspired by  @kandisheek’s lovely art piece.  

* O3 - FREE - used this in combination with a previous  Flash Fiction Friday prompt:   [#FFF235 Little Pink Houses]  to come up with  Those Old Crazy Dreams (Just Kind of Came and Went) which was posted to Tumblr and came in at 461 words.  I may tweak it a bit before posting to Ao3 before this event is over.   

* N2 - Mutual Pining - crossover with CABB Royal Knight?

* N3 - Gentle Dom - see TSB KINK: Concubine above

* N5 - AU: Multiple Identities - Posted  The Secrets That We Keep  to Ao3 this morning.  It’s a first person present tense alternating POV ficlet with mutual pining (and secret identity) Stony. Inspired by the  Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF225 I Can't Tell], the ficlet came in at 340 words.

Captain (America) Bottom Bingo - Round 2 [CABB] (ends 28 Feb 2024)

I signed up for a 3x3 card for this bingo and have six fills, two WIPs and a couple of crossover ideas.

* B3 - Royal Knight - see SAUB Mutual Pining.

Post July Break Bingo  [JBB_23p] (Ends Apr 2024)

One fill on my  2x3 non-fandom-specific card - still working on  potential crossovers.

* A1 - “It’s you. It’s always been you.” - I may be including this in a Canon Divergence prompt I have on one of these cards 😁

* B2 - Character’s personality is split into two different beings – I’ve never played with Bucky & the Soldier being two different people, but this seems like the perfect opportunity! Will see what might be a good crossover on one of my open cards.

*  C1 - Touch Starved – another good fit for a Bucky-centric fic. (Steve or Tony or Clint).

Bucky Barnes Connect Four - Alt Jun-iverse [BBC4_R2]  {Ends June 2024}

The good folks over at @buckybarnesevents  have opened this event up early!  You sign up for a single row card of four squares and the challenge is to see if you can combine any/all into a single Bucky-centric AU fanwork - although you can also create 2-4 separate fanworks if you want.  

The combo of prompts on my first card [Reality Show,  Omegaverse, Talent/Manager, Royalty] sparked an idea that I’m about 230 words + misc notes into already -  Alpha!Bucky as a technical prince   who gets talked into joining a reality show that is supposed to match him up with an omega… but there’s a twist!   I’m torn between striking while the iron is hot vs spending time on the fics that have a looming deadline…  🙃

In the Eyes of the Beholder

Posted the final chapter of the big fic for the stb-bingo!

And for those of you who read it I have some notes on What Happens Next (too long for ao3):

- Howard dies out of alcoholism-related illnesses. He almost feels remorse at the end and tries to leave SI to Tony, but Tony says suck it, and Stane gets the company. (Maria and Tony reconcile! She likes James!) In 2008 Stane orchestrates the kidnapping to make Tony create better weapons (he doesn’t have anything really good after Howard’s death). Tony’s guilt ridden because he thinks making the choice to leave SI in Stane’s hands was the reason Bad Things happened. He creates Iron man. The kidnapping itself is less than 3 months, though. Tony introduces very alive Yinsen to his very angry husband. Fun times for everyone.

- James: if I had a nickel every time I accidentally became a superhero’s sidekick/babysitter…

- Coulson is still on the job during im! Everyone at SHIELD thinks it’s a shitty job because they think nobody’s getting anything from Tony. There are not a lot of people who remember Agent Barnes’s time at SHIELD, tho. Coulson has a tea party with his two good friends (he is Phil from 5th chapter!! He and Tony are friends now!). Easiest job he’s ever done.

- Vanko and Hammer trying to kill Tony: 🔫 James: 🔫 🔫 🔫 Tony: babe pls stop apprehending my enemies before I do anything it’s embarrassing James: you are SICK go TO BED

- oh yeah Pepper is there, her and Tony are bros! her and James are also bros! she also is the ceo of Stark Resilient from the almost beginning because Tony needed a business person for when it’s all too tiring.

- also Nat isn’t there cause Coulson wants another tea party with his friends. He lies to Fury about that (I think it’s very funny if Fury doesn’t know. Like nobody really knows, it’s been a while since James worked there and his identity was on a need to know basis. Coulson needed to know because he started as James’s secretary). He gets a heavy bonus after. Tony makes him play double agent and steal any stuff that Howard left there because there might be some info on a potential new element. 

- the avengers movie is basically the same, but with more old married couple bickering

- Tony: met your bff, he’s a dick and we almost killed each other. James: oh, it went well? Tony: … James: I know you both. The fact that everyone is alive is a blessing.

- Coulson: I suggest we make him the leader of the team. Fury: is that the fucking winter soldier? why the fuck would we do that? Coulson: he’s the only one who can make both Stark and Rogers behave. Tony: yeah that’s true. James: Phil :( I want to be a househusband :( why are you all like this :(

- James becomes the leader of the avengers. mostly it’s running around with a broom to hit everyone who’s being stupid and self-sacrificial and yell TONY NO! STEVE NO!

- for im3 I have two options: 1) it doesn’t happen at all because Tony’s not a dick in 1999 2) it happens but they kidnap James. It ends very very quickly.

- no cap2 because James and Peggy ended hydra way earlier! Steve and Sam just jog together for a long time. Sam eventually becomes a part of the team but it's a very awkward process because Steve doesn’t know how to make friends normally.

- no aou because I don’t like that movie. also JARVIS is alive.

- civil war is Tony and Steve yelling at each other about responsibility sitting in the kitchen while James cooks dinner for him. At the end he makes them both eat and go to bed then looks at the camera with a vibe of a kindergarten teacher. 

- they beat thanos in like a second. just your usual friday.

- at some point winteriron adopt a ton of kids and retire. only after that Tony makes like a tweet with the ‘oh yeah we’ve been married since the 90s’. it breaks the internet.

for my @stb-bingo square O4 - Soldier bucky barnes/tony stark

Bucky is a bundle of nerves as he steps out of the taxi cab, a bouquet of sunflowers in one hand and his army-issued duffle bag in the other. He stares at the row of brownstones that spell out home, and draws in a slow, steadying breath. 

Fifteen months is a long time to have been away, and so many little things have changed. The array of flowers in front of the neighbor’s home is gone, replaced with straw scarecrows and messily carved pumpkins. Remnants of sidewalk chalk from a missed summer blur beneath his boots as he walks, streaks of purple and blue fading into dust. He can remember the trees that line the street being planted the last time he was in Manhattan, and now their leaves are turning gold and red for the second time since then. 

His own front steps, though, look untouched by time. The small white table next to the door has chipped paint in all the same places, and it still leans a little to the left under the weight of a terracotta pot. He’s sure the half-dead tomato plant inside of it spent the year just like that, no matter how hard Tony tried to keep it alive. When he rings the doorbell, the sound that echoes through the brownstone is exactly as he remembers, that three note tune that he and Tony spent forty minutes deciding on in the hardware store when the old buzzer broke. 

He could’ve walked right in, but scaring Tony half to death by sneaking up on him isn't nearly as good as the look on his face when he opens the door. 

It starts annoyed, like he's ready to tell off whichever solicitor he expects to find on the other side. Then, his lips part, and his eyes widen just before quickly turning watery. His breath is sharp on the inhale, shaky on the exhale, and the sight of his face is everything that Bucky's been needing for months now. His world is set right again, all the pieces clicking back into place.

“Hey, sweetheart,” Bucky smiles. “Did you miss me?”

Tony breaks out of his reverie with a breathless laugh, and Bucky drops his bag to the ground just in time to catch him as he leaps into his arms. The air is punched from his lungs with the force of it, any other possible words dying on his lips. It doesn’t matter, though. Not with Tony kissing him hard enough to bruise. 

Tony even smells like home when Bucky buries his face into his shoulder, like the lavender of their laundry detergent and the faint citrus of his body wash. Tony wraps around him, and Bucky tries not to crush the sunflowers as he holds on just as tight in return. 

“You’re home,” Tony whispers into Bucky’s hair. “Please tell me I’m not dreaming, and you’re actually here. You’re really home.”

“I’m home, baby,” Bucky whispers back. He pulls away just enough to see his face, holding him up with one arm to touch his hand to Tony’s cheek. He wipes away the stray tears with his thumb before they can get very far. “Not going anywhere ever again. Last one, remember?”

Tony rests his forehead against Bucky’s and breathes in deeply, eyes closed. When they open again, there’s that hint of mischief in them that Bucky loves so much. 

“You could’ve called first, you know,” he says, shoving teasingly at Bucky’s shoulder. “The house is a complete mess.”

Bucky laughs, “Darlin’ believe me, that’s the furthest thing from my mind right now.”

He bends down to retrieve his bag, and Tony holds on tighter as Bucky walks them through the door. He doesn’t think Tony will be letting him go any time soon, but truthfully he doesn’t want him to. 

Tony hums, running his fingers through Bucky’s hair. It’s shorter now than either of them like it – hardly enough to pull on. “You say that now, but there’s a whole pile of dishes in the sink you’re really gonna hate me for later. I’ve been using napkins as plates for two days.”

Bucky pushes their bedroom door open with the toe of his boot. “You’ve cooked in the last two days?”

Tony grins as Bucky drops him on the bed. “Steve brought over a casserole on Monday, because he’s ninety years old at heart. I mean, honestly, when has anyone else made a casserole in this century?”

Bucky throws his duffle bag into the corner of the room, where it’ll probably stay for at least the next week, and joins Tony on their bed. The flowers are a little rumpled now, but Tony’s smile softens as he takes them from Bucky’s hand. He strokes a fingertip across one golden petal, then looks up at Bucky through long lashes. 

“I think this might be the only thing I’ll miss about you being away. You always bring flowers when you come back.”

Bucky leans down, kissing Tony’s cheek. “I’ll still bring you flowers, sweetheart. Fill the whole house with ‘em, just for you.”

He kisses across Tony’s jaw, then down the side of his neck. The plastic around the flowers crinkles when Bucky presses in closer, and he stretches to set them on the nightstand for now, right in front of the framed photograph of them on their fourth date. 

Tony tilts his head to the side, arms wrapping around Bucky’s shoulders, and murmurs, “I did miss you, by the way. Not that you didn’t know, but just in case you forgot, you are kind of my favorite person in the entire world.”

Bucky just has to kiss him again at that, so he does. He runs his hands up Tony’s sides, rucking up the t-shirt to expose his skin. It’s Bucky’s own shirt, he realizes, a little too big on Tony’s smaller frame. 

Sometimes he used to wonder why Tony waited for him. He could have anyone, any kind of life he wanted instead of this often lonely one. And yet, he always picked up the phone when Bucky called, no matter the time of day or space between them. He invented new ways to write the words I love you in his letters, and dusted the pages with a spritz of his cologne when Bucky offhandedly mentioned missing the smell. 

A million other people in this city alone, but Tony always waits for him to come home again.

Just once, Bucky tried to let him go. To give him an out and set him free to find a better life with someone else. It was near the beginning, just a few weeks into his second tour and six months after their first meeting in some rundown Brooklyn dive bar. Bucky knew Tony missed sleep waiting for his call that day, just like he knew Tony worried when it came two hours later than usual. 

He thought it was the noble thing to do, telling him there’d be no hard feelings if it was too much for him to handle. He thought Tony would be relieved to hear it, instead of angry enough to curse his name and hang up the phone. Bucky still counts himself lucky as hell that Tony even answered again the next time he called and all the others after that.

He’s even luckier now, here with Tony again. 

Deft fingers pull at the fastenings on his fatigues, stripping him of his jacket. Bucky shrugs it off, then tosses the undershirt to the side with it. 

Tony’s hands on his bare chest make him shiver, and Tony bites his lip against an amused smirk. “I guess there’s one other thing I’ll miss,” he says, fingernails ghosting across his skin to make Bucky shudder again. “A few months without sex and it’s like you’ve never been touched before. You’re desperate for it, aren’t you?”

“For you,” Bucky amends, because it’s far less about missing the physical act than it is about who it’s with. He’s desperate for Tony’s warm skin beneath his hands, paler in comparison to his own but softer, too. He’s missed the way Tony sounds when he says his name, and that light in his eyes when he laughs. He wants to recommit every inch of Tony’s body to his memory, over and over again until it’d be impossible to forget. 

It strikes him quite suddenly, a jolt of clarity that runs through him leaves surety in its wake. He wants forever like this, with Tony in his arms and in their bed. Every day and night and moment in between. 

Something must pass over his face, or maybe his hands stutter in their movement as they slip further beneath his shirt, because Tony touches his cheek and asks, “What are you thinking about?”

Bucky smiles softly, dipping his head down to kiss him, and murmurs against his lips, “Nothing, baby doll. Just you. Always you.”

Tony’s face says that he doesn’t buy it at all, that he knows there’s something more, and Bucky laughs, “Come on, honey, I can't ask you to marry me like this, can I?”

Tony’s eyes widen, and Bucky can hear the catch of his breath. 

For just a moment, he wonders if he’s said too much too soon and ruined the best thing he’s ever had with one blow. He almost takes it back, almost calls it a bad joke with a faked laugh and strained smile. 

But Tony holds him closer, one hand in Bucky’s hair, and whispers, “Ask me.”

“Ask me,” he repeats, when all Bucky can do is breathe out the sound of his name.

“Are you sure?”

Tony laughs, a breathless sound. “How many times are you gonna make me say it?”

Bucky shakes his head in disbelief and more than a little wonder. He cups Tony’s jaw and traces  the curve of his lower lip with his thumb, mind racing. “People are gonna ask you, you know, how I proposed. They’ll all want the story. It should be a better one.”

“And when they ask, I'll tell them the truth,” Tony says, brushing back Bucky’s hair from his face with a delicate touch. 

“And what’s that?”

“That you and I were in bed one night, and you got this look on your face,” Tony says. “It was like you’d found a river in a desert, but you were just looking at me. And I could tell that you’d just had the same thought I've been having for the last four years, that we should be like this forever. So you asked, and I said yes, and it was perfect just like that. You and me.”

Bucky takes Tony’s left hand in his own, strokes over the spot on his finger where a silver ring belongs, and one last time, Tony says, “Ask me.”

“Tony,” Bucky whispers. “Will you marry me?”

Tony’s smile is blinding. “Yes.”
