Comin' Out (Annie's Song)

Hello friends!

For a while now, my partner and I have joked about we see Annie and Clarabel as Thomas' lesbian aunts - gay mothers keeping their failson out of trouble. That was something that we joked about before we started going out, and as a demiromantic bi person, that was a lot of self discovery about myself. So I wanted to do a story that channeled some of my aromantic/demi experience, and I had the idea of a story about Annie and Clarabel meeting each other for the first time that was knocking about for a while. I decided to do both. I hope you enjoy :)

I went into a bit of a frenzy writing this this week tbh, it just kept getting longer with more moving parts 😅 I don't view Annie and Clarabel as sisters, it's not something that's ever said in the show, and the only places I found that said it was a post on the Thomas Facebook and a Take Along Card. So it's about as canon as there being no number 11 engine on Sodor or the Spiteful Brakevan being a Brown Guard's Engine who helps Donald and Douglas. Their bio in the writer's bible for S17 describes them as "slightly wacky maiden aunts", which... i mean.... y'know... to me that gives "they were best friends and lived together" energy. And if the coaches in the books were meant to be "dutiful wives" to their engines, I don't think they're sisters. That whole thing on its own is freaky and weird like Thomas is widderwally twee years old he doesn't have a polycule

I thought it would be worth addressing since other people interpret them that way. That's fine! But this is how I see them and I hope you can appreciate that 🫡

Bowler and Stepney

Happy New Year Everyone.

I actually wanted to post this BEFORE the new year came but due to time contraints I couldn't do it at my aformentioned deadline. Awww well. Have some train people.

Specifically some Glup Shitto train people. Bowler/Class 40/D261 and Stepney the Bluebell Engine.

For some reason I can't help but draw them together just vibing. I think I kinda ship them in either a romantic or platonic sense because I literally can't imagine one without the other without each other at this point.

The only interacted once canonically and they hated each other yet to me they are besties or lovers or some shit. I am way too enemies to friends/lovers pilled.

Lol. So yeah, have some train gijinkas. Hope you enjoy them.

Beachy Head

Last month, the Bluebell Railway finished constructing their new Atlantic and were able to release it into traffic. It is a complete new build, yes, but unlike Tornado, it’s more of a replica, rather than a continuation, because this engine shares its name and number with one of the original H2 Atlantics from the LBSCR. The only part of the engine that wasn’t made from scratch is the boiler.

D.E. Marsh, the man who first designed these engines way back when, was educated on the GNR under Mr. Ivatt. Because of this, when Marsh went to become the LBSC’s chief mechanical engineer, he closely followed GNR practice. So, if you think the H2 resembles the famous C1 Atlantics on the GNR, you’d be right! They are extremely similar, and their boilers are nearly identical. Years ago, a spare GNR C1 boiler was discovered somewhere up north, and the Bluebell Railway, knowing everything I just described, jumped at the chance to get a hold of it and fill a gap in Southern Railway preservation.

Last week, I got the chance to visit the railway and ride behind the engine during the Bluebell Railway’s beer festival. I drank quite a few high quality brews, but the highlight was, of course, riding behind Beachy Head. The best part of it all? The Bluebell Railway operates a section of former LBSCR track, so Beachy Head, being an LBSCR engine, is on home turf. These engines would have traveled down this way in the old days, so I’ve been told.

Anyway, the Bluebell Line is an exceptionally friendly railway, and I recommend it to anyone who makes a trip to the south of England. It’s an easy day trip to make from London, with mainline trains running straight to the Bluebell Railway’s northern terminus at East Grinstead.
