#sterek and the gaps in canon

Kinda confused at Sterek hate. Like, I’ve just been sitting happily in my little corner that I’ve curated for myself with lovely people that love all the ways they can fall in love. But a lot people really think we’re gross?

I thought Hoechlin said the age gap between them was originally supposed to be three years so that he would have been a senior when they were freshmen and that’s how they would’ve known him, but then JD decided to have Kate rape him so he had to age him up?

A lot of the haters try to pretend that Sterek shippers weren’t purposefully queerbaited, like that “we’re on a ship” moment didn’t happen. Also, they don’t seem to understand time progressing? In ALL of the Sterek fic I read their relationship is consensual and Stiles is above the legal age of consent. Stiles is in college, or back from college, or they’re just grown adults living their lives. I love a good slow burn, like years in the making: from enemies to begrudging allies to begrudging respect to friends to lovers. My favorites are Derek gets therapy. I would say the driving force behind me even getting into teen wolf fic was Derek Hale Deserves Nice Things, because holy shit JD hates him (which can be further proven by the recent movie, not that we were ever in any doubt).

Let’s also not forget that canon doesn’t have to matter in fic. We can pick and choose. You can age them up, down, make them the same age, there can be time travel, time skips, au’s where you can change literally anything.

Shipping them for me boils down to the chemistry between the actors playing them. The ship wouldn’t exist without it. If Hoechlin had been cast as Scott for some reason, I’m quite sure we would have been Sciles shippers. And the fact of the matter is the actors playing them were 19 and 23. Their chemistry on and off screen is what fueled their ship despite the fact that that may not have been the intention of the show, the writers, or even the actors themselves. I started watching Teen Wolf thinking Sterek would eventually be canon just from gifs of them together because that’s how strong their chemistry was.

I have read so much great Sterek fic, some of it was better written than books I’ve read, and it was given for FREE. I think that’s amazing and I just don’t get the hate lol.

Every single time a sterek anti says "well, sterek could never be made canon because derek is oooolldddd" I think of that weird Lydia/Jordan fighting scene and roll my eyes

The show has no problem with pairing teenagers up with adults. I was forced to witness a 22 year old brag about how young he looks and then immediately try to make-out with a 16 year old girl.

lydia outright is hooking up with adult men in season 3. she says she's tired of teenage boys and there's a scene in tattoo of a man in her bed that she ignores before leaving for school. aiden and ethan have a conversation where aiden reminds ethan they're not teenagers after ethan's been flirting with danny. all of this is in the first episode of season 3.

in season 2 they have danny going to a gay club that clearly isn't for teenagers.

at the rave harris is shown to be dating much younger woman where he is very defensive about her not being a student.

the whole lydia and parrish thing is weird and i do remember people bringing up how uncomfortable they were with it but not enough people i guess. they totally tried to play it off as oh it's just the hellhound and banshee connection.

it's not that i think everyone has to ship sterek or whatever. there's no need to even justify disliking a ship but it's the anti self-righteous stance that makes me roll my eyes and be annoyed.

nothing overt happens in the show. six seasons and it's nothing more than mostly subtextual hints at deeper feelings between the two.

even behind the scenes crystal reed and arden cho were in their late 20s when they were playing teens and kissing barely in his 20s tyler posey but no fuss is made about that but even talking about how fictional 16 year old stiles may have a crush on derek whose at most 3-4 years older is somehow terrible.

it's just tiring. i get it antis are mad the ship is the most popular one in fandom and don't like age gap but you're not gonna stop people from shipping it.

reasons sterek doesn't make sense to me

1. Derek and Stiles don't have that many scenes together, Derek tends to have more scenes with, Ethan and Aiden, Peter and Cora, Scott, Argent, or Boyd, Erica and Isaac while Stiles tens to have scenes with Scott, Lydia, Malia or his dad more

2. in these scenes they don't really get along, Derek often threatens Stiles, insults Stiles, injures Stiles or Stiles insults Derek, or there was the weird one where Stiles was gonna cut his arm off.

3. Derek dating history includes, Kate Argent, Jenifer Blake and Braeden. two of the three have attempted to kill him or people he loves, all of them are strong enough and smart enough to kill him, and potentially all of them have canonically killed people. Derek's type is dangerous women. why would he date someone he describes and 'skinny', 'defenceless' and not 'smart' enough to frame him for murder.

4. he definitely has some lasting trauma from Kate dating him as a teenager and manipulating him, chances are he's not gonna want to put anyone else in a similar position. is season two when Erica kisses him he he is shown pushing her away. and he doesn't seem okay with it, he obviously isn't comfortable with a large age gap when one of them is a literally teenager. let's not even mention the homophobic implications of having a man in his 20s dating a teenager

I don't mind rare pairs or shipping without chemistry, I actually encourage it but when people say that it should have been canon I have a problem

if you want to say Stiles should have a boyfriend there are characters his age who he has more chemistry with (danny, scott) or even just other character his age (Jackson, Boyd, Isaac) and same with derek.

I saw a post in which someone mentioned a reason they didn't like a particular ship, and I'm not going to respond on that post because I'm not trying to pick a fight with that person, and I don't want to make them engage with content about a ship that they've stated they don't like. Besides, arguing about ships on the intranet can get messy. But I did want to talk about the point they brought up. One of the reason that they don't like the Sterek ship is the age difference - which is fair enough. But they said that the characters are aged about 15 and 22, which would be a massive age difference.

Except, the age difference was stated in the show to be about two years. There is one line in the pilot where Stiles says about Derek, "He's only a couple of years older than us." Now he might not have meant exactly two years, but still that would imply a relatively small age gap. I will acknowledge that two years can make a big difference at that sort of age, but it's nothing like seven years would be.

I think most of the people who got into shipping Sterek did so in season one, when the age difference was canonically "a couple of years." I'm probably not alone in having assumed that the characters were maybe 16 and 18. Still an age gap, but nowhere near as egregious.

It was only later that the show runners retconned Derek's age and made him older. The writers made the gap bigger as the show was going on - after the pairing already had a big ship following.

I'm not saying anyone needs to like the ship if they don't, for any reason. But claiming a 7 year age gap between them is not correct - at least according to the actual canon of the early seasons.

I'll most likely be picking this back up once above college baseball au is complete. say nothing - Succubus AU, the gang find themselves facing a shape-shifting, seductive sex demon and some truths are revealed along the way. Literally just the smut left to write and 6k in. where i needed to be - One night stand mpreg AU, Derek and Stiles hook-up in a one night stand and Stiles disappears before Derek can get his number, only to reach out months later with the bombshell that he's pregnant - but by this time, Derek is dating Paige. A fifth of the way through and 4k in. things that death cannot touch - Laura resurrection AU, established canon-divergent Sterek, Lydia has a vision that Stiles can bring Laura back to life, but only at the cost of his own. Only the opening scene so far. how old your heart is - Age gap AU, the Hales are old family friends of the Stilinskis; the lone-surviving Laura and Derek move back to Beacon Hills when Stiles is 18 - and Derek is 30. Sneaking around and angst. Only the outline so far for this one.

He asks his best friend to put a good word in for him, but instead Scott kind of... falls for her himself. Stiles is furious and drowns his sorrows in a bar run by a certain incredibly attractive werewolf.

I am really not understanding the Sterek hate. Like most of the Sterek hate seems to stem from paedophilia.

You want to talk about Paedophilia between Sterek? Then what the fuck is The Vampire Diaries. So many canon/non-canon ships are involved in paedophilia then. They don't get a lot of hate.

Even Twilight, still one of the most popular series especially among the young adults has Paedophilia in it. Granted Twilight too gets a lot of hate but the hate is mostly focussed on the weird story and the emotionally abusive relationship between Bella and Edward.

I have watched some fantasy k-dramas which have Paedophilia in it. They don't get a lot of hate.

Even the games like choices or episode etc involving vampires have Paedophilia.

I can go on and on but I like to think that it's sorta an unspoken rule among the supernatural and fantasy genres to ignore the age gap if the minors are almost majors.

Most of the Sterek fanfic writers actually acknowledge their age gap and try to work with it if Stiles is still in high school in the fic. Derek is supposed to be 19 years old in the Pilot episode. Derek's age is also not canonically fixed because JD doesn't care about timelines.

All the post series fics have Stiles all grownup or in college so both of them are majors and the age difference is also 5 years Max. So what is the problem with that? Please someone help me understand.

It's funny how ppl had a lot to say about Sterek age gap even though Derek was a supernatural creature and we don't know his real age, but everyone is real quiet about Scott ressurecting his teenage girlfriend and then just dating her again at his big old age.

That's the thing, though. Antis love to try to bring up Derek's age, but his age was never said in canon. Not in any of the episodes. We do know, however, that he was meant to be only a couple years older than Stiles AND that Derek was originally supposed to get into a relationship with Allison back in S1 because there was a plan for a Scott/Allison/Derek love triangle. So, he was obviously not supposed to be an adult.

He's not way older lol. At most, I want to say there's a 3-4 year age gap. Derek is supposed to be, like, 19/20 in 1x01, whereas Stiles is 15 or 16. At some point, JD retroactively aged Derek up in canon when he realized that he actually wrote a very horrifying statutory rape plotline between Derek/Kate when Derek would have been about 13 (which would have made Derek far too sympathetic, something that JD cannot tolerate since he hates him so much) but, as far as the pilot goes, Derek was a little baby

Can we start a discussion? When it comes to Teen Wolf & Shipping. Do you know of any other age difference ships that don't get as much pushback that Sterek does? Such as Marrish, Because despite the antis complaining against it it's still in the top 3 ships of all time.

teen wolf is not the show to be watching if you're looking for "unproblematic" content. age gap ships have always been like at the bottom of issues with the show lol.

sterek is the ship that has always gotten the most push back. mostly because of it's exposure and the way the show queerbaited the fuck outta it. it's the one most people are aware of even if they haven't watched the show. therefore, it's the one that gets the focus.

now i didn't watch s5 till the show had ended but people did find the age gap concerning and gross between jordan and lydia despite lydia being 18 at the time.

lydia turned 18 in season 4. natalie and her discuss this at the lake house i believe in time of death. this makes the birthday we see for lydia in party guessed her 17th birthday.

parrish tells jared in riddled that he's 24. by the time of 5a which takes place during the first semester of lydia's senior year 2012 she would've still been 18 and he would've been 25 because 3b was the first semester of their junior year 2011 so 5a is a year later.

jordan and lydia have a 7 year difference. while their age gap is concerning because of the power dynamics jordan wasn't grooming her and it wasn't illegal. i think the writing shifted to try to imply that they were drawn to each other because of the banshee and hellhound connection.

now let's take a look at thiam. a pretty popular and accepted ship.

theo is the same age as our core characters. he is in their grade and knew them when he was young.

our baby beta liam was a freshman when he was introduced so that makes him a sophomore when theo is introduced in 5a.

by the time theo and liam become frenemies the age difference between them is basically the original age difference from the pilot presentation script as derek and stiles.

aiden and ethan were both romantically and sexually involved with lydia and danny in season 3 despite making it clear they were only pretending to be high schoolers. they may have been in their early 20s but they were adults fucking minors by deception.

danny's whole dating history is suspect too due to it being implied he had an older boyfriend and he was seen going to a gay club. like what. he's supposed to be the same age as our core gang. he did have a mild thing for matt though who was at least a peer.

there's also harris being shown to be at the rave with a much younger woman (21 he says). like bruh. this is never addressed.

mason and corey. liam and hayden. stiles and malia. lydia and jackson. allison and isaac. scott and allison. lydia and stiles. scott and kira. paige and derek.

those are all age appropriate actual canon relationships. i would also add derek and braeden too.

no one gives one episode wonder heather shit about kissing stiles nonconsensually either.

derek's age is never canonically given but like c'mon. in s1 he doesn't act that much older than scott and stiles. he acts like their peer.

jeff and the writers did age him up a bit because they realized they made derek 13 when he was involved with kate. they were uncomfortable with him that young and instead pushed it up to near 16. (still fucked).

i've seen it discussed on the subreddit (🤮) and people seem to deluded themselves into thinking derek was older when he and kate were involved. ding dong they are wrong.

visionary tells us plainly that derek and paige were sophomores (hello scott parallels) and kate got her nasty hands on him not long after paige died.

i think after sterek the most discussed age gap issue discussed is derek's seduction/enticement of erica. it was definitely out of pocket and questionable behavior on his part but it is rarely brought up by the antis that erica jumped him and kissed him nonconsensually later. or the manipulation and rape by deception jennifer commits.

notice a theme? people age up derek to try to say what kate did wasn't grooming and statutory rape and deny that what jennifer did was also rape. they'll deny derek any and all victimhood while turning it around on him calling him an abuser towards stiles and basically calling him a pedophile because of the sterek ship. antis really want to make a canonical victim of multiple instances of sexual abuse into the abuser.

or worse they'll call real life people these things over a fictional ship.

where have i heard this kind of narrative before i wonder? 🙄

besides, derek only does the steering wheel thing in retaliation for stiles using his body as enticement for danny without his permission. stiles is the one who did the bad thing and crossed a boundary. it's not nice or really acceptable for derek to harm stiles like that but there's context to the action. it wasn't random. it was pointed. he never does anything like this again and in fact spends a vast majority of his time trying to protect stiles.

nothing sexual or even overtly romantic occurred between derek and stiles in canon. their only crime was having too much chemistry.

the antis are mad because people ship sterek and it's not even canon. it's all fanon. sure i'm of the belief a deep connection and attraction is there between them but it's all subtextual and never acted on by either party.

let me reiterate this: antis are mad over a hypothetical ship of two fictional characters that never happened in the source material.

besides, by the time the show ends and i mean the last, last scene there's been a 2 year time jump. when the show ends it's 2015. stiles would've been 20 fucking years old and by the time of the movie he's in his 30s.

i think by then he'd be allowed to ride derek's dick off into the sunset if he wanted.

Hiyaaa! You've got it! :D Something tells me this is going to be a rambly fic rec list, so brace yourself! 8. Pairing you read the most for? For the first half of the year, I was creating things and reading at the same time, for multiple ships and multiple fandoms. I was reading everything for common ships and rare pairs, tbh. 📗 From my January TBR list, I’m reccing Licurici by louisfake | @lou-isfake (HP- Harry/Charlie/Draco, E, 133,092) because it’s amazing! I binged this in 2 nights, and it was so worth it! The world-building is phenomenal, and Charlie’s character is so well developed...I love how we see more than just a Weasley and a Dragonologist. He’s a person who’s complicated, has all the feels, and oh hey, he just happens to love the hell out two handsome blokes. A gorgeous read, and make sure to have tissues nearby because you’re going to need it! And I will always rec this fic again and again. You’re welcome. ANDDD, OKAY. From September up to now, I’ve been binging everything Sterek (pretty such every day), because that’s what happens when one is introduced and sucked into Teen Wolf. I quickly fell head over heels for them (it only took one fic ;D), and they’ve been a comfort ship for me ever since. 📗 It seems wasted now by DaaroMoltor (TW- Sterek, T, 48,618) is one of the first fics I read that made me want to explore this ship more. This is a deep slow burn where apparently Derek and Stiles suck at using their words and don’t know how to talk to each other, and the feelings that come up from so misunderstandings kinda just pull at the heart. (I think it’s very obvious now that all my fav fics seem to be angsty and make people cry, oops). I’d say Kelly Clarkson’s lyrics, “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger,” 1000% sums up what this fic is about, with Stiles trying to prove his worth to the pack, and of course I’m on board with anything that explores him being a Spark. Also, maggggic. 📗 Here’s one more rec: Blue Rocket by snarkatthemoon | @snarkatthemoon (TW: Sterek, E, 43,948) is a fic I couldn’t stop thinking about for dayyyys! There are so many things I can probably ramble on about from this fic, but Derek’s PoV is soooo on point, given his complex character, fears and expectations. The world-building is so well-thought out, the chemistry that Derek and Stiles have together is 🔥🔥🔥 and man, there are just soooo many layers to peel back. It’s gorgeous, heartbreaking, and yayy for Magical, Drummer AND Tattooed Stiles! Whoops, I guess that was a really loaded answer! 9. Favorite rare pair you read works for this year? What can I say? Perciver is always on my radar, so I’m always looking for new works to dive right into! They’re a ship I can come back to again and again, and ramble on about for infinity. I will totally talk read and talk everything Perciver in a heartbeat. 📘 A fav back from February is two cannot keep a secret by happynotdignified (HP- Perciver, T, 11,409). This story digs right into different PoVs of the Weasley family with each family member finding out that Percy and Oliver are dating. It’s bittersweet, and there are a lot of feels through conversations, letters and yeahh. Loosely follows the canon timeline while filling in some gaps, but gods, it’s so interesting to see how and what Percy’s family discover about him and Oliver and how that changes what they thought they knew about him, and how wrong they were. In terms of character development, we see how strong Percy and Oliver are as individuals and as a pair through different lenses. Love this to pieces, and it’s such a cool take on things. 14. Favorite AU you read this year? 📙 quite like us by alarainai (HP- Jegulus- T, 67,315) was such a fun read because that was how I was introduced to Jegulus and the awesomeness of text fic! Also, eagerly awaiting each update was super exciting when this was still a WIP. And this is probably the one exception I’ll make for fluff because holy crap, what a slow burn this is, but also, wrong number AUs always leads to great things, right? I have so much appreciation for Regulus’ snark and humour, and well, James is so gone for him, it’s not even funny. ♥️ 17. Did you leave any comments that had to be in more than one part? I usually like to keep things all in one comment just for ease. But if I need to ramble or break down all the things I appreciate in a work, I totally will. It really depends on the ship for this one. There are times where it's a hard no and other times where it's a bonus.

Yes yes I like it. Extra points if it's a lil toxic. I like reading fics where the characters are not well and love each other too much because it's something I actively avoid in real life.

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: +5

Usually yes, but it also depends on the ship. There are some where I just can't see them being possessive/jealous and can't read it if its about them.  

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +3

Yes but only if it's accurate to canon characterizations and isn't just shoving characters into trope boxes

I didn’t mean to comment on this movie because i have no interest in seeing it. But it has come up on my feed with enough spoilers to understand the plot of it. So, I understand that Scott is in a canon romantic relation as a 30 years old man with a resurected 17 year old Allison and is raising the lookalike for Derek and Stiles love child ( kid and adoptive Allison are the same age bth) after Derek was killed off ( again) and Stiles didn’t bother to show up to this shit show. 

Good to know that all the Sterek haters having an issue with the age gap between Derek and Stiles ( which was initially, what, a 2 years gap, up until the producer made Derek 10007 years old) got to watch this much more wholesome and not at all ilegal Scalison (Scott/Allison) version instead. if anyone is still watching this 5 years later anyway...

Oh, and all the hate and comparison between Stydia ( Stiles/Lydia) and Sterek was for nothing..in the end Stiles didn’t give a shit for any of these guys. And Lydia is aparently reunited with Jackson, you know, the guy she actually had some chemistry with.
