Okay so I've been wanting to try and develop my first game for a few years now

I've got three projects that I think fit the appropriate scope of a First Project ( something short using mechanics I already understand ). All of them are set within the Empire Of Jiaal, my original fantasy world.

1- a visual novel set in Lorana's inn with branching plots based on whom you decide to hang out with ( no animation, minimal asset creation, LOTS of writing, multiple free engines available to build with )

2- RPG maker game set in a small village with a linear plot about defending the village from monsters/demons. ( less writing, a lot of assets already exist but a lot more to learn about the tools, much more technical fussing to implement battles and leveling, will be difficult to resist creep in scope and restrain the project from becoming an energy sucking monster I never finish )

3- Text Only Choose Your Own Adventure made with Twine, centered on a shipwrecked sailor picked up by a goddess's war barge and pressed into a year of service on board in return for their life. ( ALL the writing, so many branching paths, but no need to learn any new tools or make art assets )

Thinking about Miss Paige and Hancock making camp after barely escaping a collapsing building together

Helping each other get all the caked on concrete dust off of their clothes and effects, Paige still in awe and shock that they even got out alive while John plays it off as Just Another Day In The Commonwealth but honestly was genuinely terrified of an image in his head where they didn't make it out and he was left to slowly starve while trapped beneath the rubble with her corpse.

Awkward chuckles at gallows humor, sharing a drink as recently washed clothes are hung up and guns are verified to be in working condition, boiling water used for washing used to warm up the whiskey and kick back steaming shots.

A quiet moment of Looking at each other, both thinking about how much they couldn't bear to lose the other back there, before Miss Paige crumbles to the awkward and offers to take first watch through the night and sidesteps any serious conversation.

Picture this:

the Sunny is coming up on a winter island. It’s soup weather. Sanji is making a rich potato soup and freshly made mini baguettes, each with a different scoring on the dough for each nakama. For Ussop, the scoring looks suspiciously like his nose; for Nami, little tangerine blossoms; for Zoro, sword like scoring.

Zoro has been working to show Sanji he’s not just a dumb swordsman. Sure, he (allegedly) gets lost on every island, and yeah, he might not be the brightest member on the crew, but he can learn a little bit of Sanjis mother language here and there, with Robins help of course. So when he sees Sanji making dinner, he decides to kill two birds with one stone and compliment his cooking in French.

After working with Robin on exactly what to say, he walks confidently into the galley, leaning against the counter next to Sanji and says “that smells delicious, love cook. Je veux tremper ma baguette dans ta soupe”

so i was thinking about that post i rb'd earlier re- characters not being the 'perfect victim' and lashing out and stuff

and i have a full draft post about it but. it struck me. why i dont like a lot of diluc's fanon characterisation

i think its bcs that. while him being angry, to the point of destruction, at the faceless fatui who got his father killed is seen as a good thing, he's almost constantly demonised about lashing out towards kaeya, when kaeya hurt him deeply, instead of just sitting back and keeping him emotions ""in check"" (heavy sarcasm)

and you can see it in how the fanon has just decided that diluc was trying to kill kaeya that night, despite the text only saying they fought and kaeya getting an injury, and how there's a running theme in ragbros fics about diluc having to apologise for his wrongful actions, with kaeya's actions either being brushed off or non-existant

Apparently they’re making more Star Wars movies and I’m just- I’m just so tired. They’re bringing Rey back for a movie and I’m just so tired. I don’t know. I’m burnt out on Star Wars (except for Andor which was the best show of anything ever). I caught up on The Mandalorian the other day and it was so boring!!! I hated it!! I’m not vibing with this season. I can’t quite place a finger on why.

I don’t know. I just think that nothing is sacred anymore. I think things get rushed out so there’s something to be consumed by the masses. I think Andor was the first thing in a long time that you could actually feel the love and actual thought and effort behind it. I think I might be done with new Star Wars and just stick with the old stuff. I had a friend that just didn’t go see The Rise of Skywalker because he could sense this shift. I think he made the right move.

In general with the film industry, there is a lack of new ideas and who better than freakin Disney is there to showcase that. Bad sequels and live action remakes of movies that work BECAUSE they’re animated. Retelling the same stories over and over with the same characters over and over in the same places over and over. It’s no longer a fun nod to something—it’s annoying. My displeasure with the current state of Star Wars is a symptom of a much bigger problem. I wish all of these remakes and nostalgia grabs would stop being rewarded over new, original ideas.

I really think someone, at some point, has to do a survey of fandom to figure out why it is that fanon and so much fandom interpretation in general is divorced from the text or outright countertextual. Is it specifically fandom that cultivates this or is it a broader cultural thing? Like an example I can specifically think of, because he's such a cultural icon, is Luke Skywalker, where there's a popular perception that he's your average run of the mill hero who kills all the bad guys when his defining narrative act is his refusal to kill his father and to redeem him even against the advice of his masters. This isn't just a fandom-specific assumption, I feel like.

Is it partly confirmation bias? One is more likely to pay attention to what annoys one than not. Is this just part of the struggle with storytelling? Really, like, the idea that storytelling transcends the text and is itself indicative of what you choose to read into things, what you choose to hear instead is actually really interesting. Part of the reason why I take umbrage with 'death of the author' is because it obfuscates the ability to articulate where the text ends and you begin. The more extreme position that the text is absent the author isn't totally common, but positions like it - that canon is your playpen, you can do whatever you want - definitely circle around it.

The problem, I think, might be more to do with the platforms in which these engagements happen, and the priority given to one interpretation over another. It is probably bad that there are platforms which incentivise not thinking about your own opinions and platforms which incentivise contrarianism and more and more extreme positions for the sake of clickbait and probably - whilst fandom is 'natural' in some way that you want to share your reaction to something and bond over art/literature/media - it naturally becomes a home to politicking.

But it's really fucking annoying lol.

Summary:

The Aces of the Deck have noticed that something is wrong.
