I Hate How She Talks About Snow White
Tumblr media
"People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it's like, yeah, it is − because it needed that. It's an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond 'Someday My Prince Will Come. "
Tumblr media
Let me tell you a little something's about that "85-year-old cartoon," miss Zegler.
It was the first-ever cel-animated feature-length full-color film. Ever. Ever. EVER. I'm worried that you're not hearing me. This movie was Disney inventing the modern animated film. Spirited Away, Into the Spider-Verse, Tangled, you don't get to have any of these without Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937.)
Speaking of what you wouldn't get without this movie, it includes anime as a genre. Not just in technique (because again, nobody animated more than shorts before this movie) but in style and story. Anime, as it is now, wouldn't exist without Osamu Tezuka, "The God of Manga," who wouldn't have pioneered anime storytelling in the 1940s without having watched and learned from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the 1930s. No "weeb" culture, no Princess Mononoke, no DragonBall Z, no My Hero Academia, no Demonslayer, and no Naruto without this "85-year-old cartoon."
It was praised, not just for its technical marvels, not just for its synchronized craft of sound and action, but primarily and enduringly because people felt like the characters were real. They felt more like they were watching something true to life than they did watching silent, live-action films with real actors and actresses. They couldn't believe that an animated character could make kids wet their pants as she flees, frightened, through the forest, or grown adults cry with grieving Dwarves. Consistently.
Walt Disney Studios was built on this movie. No no; you're not understanding me. Literally, the studio in Burbank, out of which has come legends of this craft of animated filmmaking, was literally built on the incredible, odds-defying, record-breaking profits of just Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, specifically.
Speaking of record-breaking profits, this movie is the highest-grossing animated film in history. Still. TO THIS DAY. And it was made during the Great Depression.
In fact, it made four times as much money than any other film, in any other genre, released during that time period. It was actually THE highest-grossing film of all time, in any genre, until nothing less than Gone With the Wind, herself, came along to take the throne.
It was the first-ever animated movie to be selected for the National Film Registry. Actually, it was one of the first movies, period, to ever go into the registry at all. You know what else is in the NFR? The original West Side Story, the remake of which is responsible for Rachel Ziegler's widespread fame.
Walt Disney sacrificed for this movie to be invented. Literally, he took out a mortgage on his house and screened the movie to banks for loans to finish paying for it, because everyone from the media to his own wife and brother told him he was crazy to make this movie. And you want to tell me it's just an 85-year-old cartoon that needs the most meaningless of updates, with your tender 8 years in the business?
Speaking of sacrifice, this movie employed over 750 people, and they worked immeasurable hours of overtime, and invented--literally invented--so many new techniques that are still used in filmmaking today, that Walt Disney, in a move that NO OTHER STUDIO IN HOLLYWOOD was doing in the 30's, put this in the opening credits: "My sincere appreciation to the members of my staff whose loyalty and creative endeavor made possible this production." Not the end credits, like movies love to do today as a virtue-signal. The opening credits.
It's legacy endures. Your little "85-year-old cartoon" sold more than 1 million DVD copies upon re-release. Just on its first day. The Beatles quoted Snow White in one of their songs. Legacy directors call it "the greatest film ever made." Everything from Rolling Stones to the American Film Institute call this move one of the most influential masterpieces of our culture. This movie doesn't need anything from anybody. This movie is a cultural juggernaut for America. It's a staple in the art of filmmaking--and art, in general. It is the foundation of the Walt Disney Company, of modern children's media in the West, and of modern adaptations of classical fairy tales in the West. When you think only in the base, low, mean terms of "race" and "progressivism" you start taking things that are actually worlds-away from being in your league to judge, and you relegate them to silly ignorant phrases like "85-year-old cartoon" to explain why what you're doing is somehow better.
Sit down and be humble. Who the heck are you?

This whole thing with Amazon barely marketing The Edge of Sleep (if at all) really made me think about how indie projects just. In general are treated pretty poorly by an industry that now more than ever wants to play it “safe”. Stuff that comes from unconventional sources or things that aren’t considered mainstream or high brow enough (animation, musical theater, and yes, independent YouTube creators being some of the ones that come to mind) are either scoffed at or set up to fail UNLESS enough people see it or it’s part of a major franchise people know about (see: Into the Spiderverse).
Masterpieces, great art, great storytelling can come from anywhere and anyone.
But we need to fight for the platform so it can be seen by everyone.

Where do you watch the Beetlejuice cartoon? I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Great question, and I actually just switched to a better platform!
For years, I used to watch it on a site called Dailymotion, but almost all the episodes have disappeared. You can find a decent handful by using the right key words, but I was shot for just about anything in Season 3-4, A.K.A — most of my favorites. (The later seasons really had it figured out, okay?)
Now I use a site called wcofun.net, and I absolutely love it! (This post is not sponsored, I’m just really happy I found it.) There’s no ads, no sketchy downloads, and it has every single episode in order!
I’ll put the link to it Here, or you can search https://www.wcofun.net/anime/beetlejuice

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY TO ATSV!!!!
Its wild knowing it's already been out for a year. God damn. I remember being sooooooooo excited for it and then LOSING MY MIND in the theater at the ending. Literally left it ranting and raving to my best friend, who I got to see it with and had previously watched it.
It does not feel like it's been a whole year.
I MISS the era of spiderverse edits all over my TikTok fyp, miss the theories, miss the Fandom being as active as it used to be. SOMEONE PLESSE GIVE ME BTSV RN SO I CAN GET THAT VIBE BACK!!!! THEY BETTER RELEASE IT IN SUMMER AGAIN TOO I ATE THAT SHIT UPPPPPPPP
So I made a quick little animation to celebrate my favorite movie that's been my biggest crutch all year.
(I'm going to re watch the movie and analyze every single thing about it that I can. Anybody be interested in a post about my findings?) ((I will be posting one anyway.. haha.....))
(Got something Ganke themed cooking up)

Imagine trying to flex to your multimillionaire girlfriend that you were once part of a stacked main cast of a beloved Studio Ghibli dub and then having to backtrack and explain that erm the trouble is she doesn't actually have a single legal avenue to watch it without either leaving the country or waiting a month for a back door amazon order through a foreign url because Disney would rather erase their competition's existence than let any viewer spend any amount of money to discover that other companies make better art than them

Do you know any good places to watch movies for free or even shows? I’ve been looking forward 😭
Hello, anon!
There's quite a few websites that are 100% free and legal to watch stuff on. The ones in BLUE are ones I highly recommend and/or love to bits and pieces. The ones in ORANGE are ones I haven't done extensive research on but have done enough to know they're F2U and recommend at least looking at them. The ones in RED are ones I know have free stuff but haven't even bothered to look at them and have stated why I haven't.
Tubi TV: I love Tubi to bits and pieces. It has a lot of really neat stuff on there (anime, tv shows, movies, indie stuff, documentaries, etc.). It's definitely worth checking out. Subtitles have been available on everything I've watched. Having an account isn't required but it helps with saving things you want to watch later on down the road.
Pluto TV: There's quite a bit of decent stuff on here, too, as well as various anime and tv shows and movies. I still prefer Tubi but Pluto is good. Subtitles have been available on everything I've watched. Having an account isn't required but it helps with saving things you want to watch later on down the road.
ANIX.TO: Has all sorts of anime on it in. It seems like a lot of the stuff has both subbed and dubbed options so that's a bonus. The subbed shows definitely has subtitles but dubbed doesn't seem to have them.
UPMOVIES: You can apparently watch Movies, TV Shows, Anime, Asian Series, and so much more on here for free and with subtitles?? Heck yeah! I tested it by typing in The Flash (1990) and it was a success. You can also very apparently save the videos by Rick Click > Save Video As.. on Firefox as an MPEG-4 file so that's a bonus. Subtitles are available on everything I've seen so far via dubbed and subbed shows/movies have subtitles by default.
Plex TV: I've looked a little bit on here but not much. It has documentaries, animated stuff, and the likes. Not my go-to, personally, but it's worth looking at.
The Roku Channel: I haven't actively looked into this but I do know it's free to use. It's definitely worth giving a look at even though it might not be my go-to place.
IMDB TV: I've legit never used this before so IDK how it works. All I know is that there's stuff on there that's free. You 100% need an account in order to even use it so that's, quite unfortunately, a no-go for me.
There are lots of others out there but these are ones I wanted to at least bring up. If anyone else has any recommendations then feel free to comment, reblog + add stuff, share, and the whole nine yards.

by the way! the correct response to the announcement that a show is being taken off streaming services isn't actually to rush to watch it before its gone! it's to do everything you can to get it archived onto other sites or physical media (even better!) so that a piece of media isn't just gone in an instant because some studio exec would rather nuke it off the face of the earth than pay the people who actually made it the bare fucking minimum for their work! hope this helps <3
