Another ask also wanted to see her in "casual clothes" but I totally remembered it as "pajamas" for some reason lol, though-- I feel Lauren's most comfortable outfit is at best a blouse and khakis until she finally sleeps, so this kind of tracks.

This is not what I usually post about but I'm relistening to WTNV and Fuck. Kevin's story gets me every time, it breaks my heart. The writers and actors are so incredibly good at setting up the Strex plot, and that entire stretch if the show is so good, but Triptych absolutely pulls the rug out from under you and it's SO JARRING to hear a different version of Kevin, one that parallels Cecil so well, and hear about what he really did to try and save his town. The fact that he physically used himself as barrier, he fought until the end. The way he shows what Cecil could have ended up as. And then hearing the FUTURE VERSION OF HIM?????? Absolutely heartbreaking. He doesn't get a good ending, and it's heartwrenching, and the writing is so beautiful. It all connects, the past and the present and the future, and there's nothing Cecil could ever do to help. Kevin was doomed from the start. His debate over happy lies vs. sad truths. Deciding to give Kevin something, anything to hold onto in the end, to tell him that he wins. God. Incredible. Ack I just needed to rant about him for a while. Kevin deserved so much better, he could have done so much more.

Not in a "omg that creature was sooo creepy" kinda way maybe, but Strexcorp literally. Left a violently programmed artifical creature in his booth. With the intention of scaring him into obedience

Like. They maimed his cat to try to get him to stop being so into having rights. That was clearly sending a message that they were willing to hurt his loved ones. And doesn't Lauren start asking about Janice and Carlos a few episodes later?

Jesus, that must've been terrifying. Can you imagine having your employer almost kill your cat and then start threatening your niece and boyfriend?

No wonder they were able to break Kevin so thoroughly. It's honestly surprising Cecil managed to avoid that

Should I start listening to Welcome to Night Vale? What's it aboot?

Oh boy. Oh boy.

(Let it be known that if my irl friends heard you ask this, they would tackle me to prevent the rant I would go on)

I definitely think anyone who likes audio drama should listen to Welcome To Night Vale because it is one of the first contemporary audio dramas and possibly THE first wildly successful one. So much of what you hear in recent audio dramas is inspired by/draws from WTNV. But even if you don't like or are new to audio drama, there is so much to love about Night Vale.

So, the actual plot: Night Vale is a friendly, Midwestern, desert community where everyone's favorite radio show is hosted by Cecil Palmer. Cecil is the cheery "voice of Night Vale" who updates listeners on community news like the angels living by the old car lot, the mysterious glowing cloud which drops dead animals from the sky, and the teenage militia defending their right to read at the library. Cecil occasionally (all the time) interjects with his own personal thoughts and experiences like how terrible the scones Steve Carlsberg made for the PTA meeting were, his niece's basketball team, or the handsome new scientist who recently arrived to study Night Vale.

I would talk about the themes of the show, but they cover so much and it all is so important to me. Everything from family to growing up to feeling different to trauma to grief to growth to capitalism to community to fear to love to the dangers of teaching a spider to read.

It's really an incredible show and I recommend at least giving it a try. It has a dry humor I think everyone can appreciate (including my 58 year old mother who listened during blackout when there was no internet and it was the only thing I had downloaded), even if audio drama or creepiness isn't your thing.

I have been trying to make a design for Kevin because he’s my favorite and I love him, but I haven’t been able to draw anything except for pre-strex Kevin. Because I love him and thinking about him being hurt is sad and then I see what I’ve drawn and it is in fact, sad.

So

Pre-strexcorp Kevin

He has lovely tattoos. Sun on one hand, sunflower on the other. Clouds and stem + roots on each respective arm.

I think I wanted the stem and clouds to represent that you need a little bad to make good things good and then in the post-strex design his tattoos get covered and all fucked up and cool because he doesn’t think that anymore. And because of what he says about strex messing up his body in irreversible ways.

I like him with sunflower imagery for some reason.

He has lots of rings and jewelry, and stickers on his clothes and equipment.

I absolutely love episode 73 of Welcome to Night Vale, Triptych. It's the episode where I started to see Kevin in a different light.

I honestly believe that Cecil and Kevin could have been close friends if only they had meet before Strex Corp came along.
