When taking a walk, what should one look at? During the pandemic, with restrictions on mobility, many people have started seeking new pleasures in their living cities and walking has gradually become a trend. While unique architectural structures, serene pathways, and open spaces that allow for free movement are often sought after and admired for showcasing the beauty of a city, our everyday walks often encounter ordinary urban components.

When taking a walk, you can find beauty and interest in the simple things around you. Observe the people going about their daily lives, notice the changing seasons and weather, pay attention to the details of the streets and buildings, and appreciate the small moments of tranquility amidst the urban hustle and bustle. By being present and observant, you can discover the charm and hidden gems that exist in the ordinary fabric of the city.

Future Architecture Rooms

is an unconventional digital environment where 27 leading European architecture institutions and organizations will open their doors online. 

A room is an unconventional digital environment, a collection of online spaces, where each member institutions of the Future Architecture platform creates their own statements, reflections and contemporary context in its own digital space. The project was born out of the lockdown, yet opens its doors to worlds beyond the immediate crisis. Each room is hosted by one institution producing a diversity of materials, plots and ideas. Together they constitute, visually and metaphorically, the architecture of the platform, making the most of its richness.

The concept curator Anastassia Smirnova describes the room as “the base unit of a building. It is enclosed and defined by walls, floor and ceiling and usually features windows and doors.One can define a room almost intuitively./.../ The room is a spatial construct that has changed very little in the course of human history. It is a constant that has survived many variables.” 

The Future Architecture Rooms is an attempt to build an environment at the intersection of the real and the immaterial. As a community, the members have created a space that can respond to the effects of the pandemic, without being disrupted by them. It does not represent a total exodus into the digital sphere, but it is a parallel space that allows this pan-European network to develop projects productively beyond its habitual formats of conferences and workshops. Each member of the platform has its own room which serves as a form of online residency. Each institution occupies an equal space, regardless of its real-world size, history or budget. In the rooms the curators and producers, directors and managers as well as their collaborating architects, critics and publics are free to communicate as they wish. Enter the Rooms and meet the artists, architects, curators, producers and creative directors behind these institutions. See them in their working habitats, studies, labs, salons, archives, exhibition halls or libraries.

“In this pandemic era, we have become hyper-aware of the materiality and dimensions of our rooms. The era of video conferencing has exposed our private rooms online. These days, we glimpse each other’s decorated walls or books on shelves in call after call. The fragments of these rooms become part of our own spaces, blurring the boundaries of public and private spheres, of what is tangible inside and what is immaterial elsewhere.” describes Smirnova.

At the moment, every room features a short video about the members’ interests, methods, their teams, but also about buildings and places in which they work. These videos allow us to understand the people and spaces behind their institutional logos. In the coming months, the members will be able to diversify the content and curate their rooms in unique ways. The rooms will be filled with live feeds, texts, comments, open discussions and more. The project participants also talk about their futures. How are they adapting to the consequences of Covid-19? How are they going to work in the coming months and how are they approaching the theme of the next Future Architecture platform Open Call, Landscapes of Care?

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale feature its home, the Palácio Sinel de Cordes, where the groundwork for the festival takes places, where shows and events are hosted, and where friends are welcomed. Viewers are invited to hear stories about the building's spaces; of varying episodes and incidents that took place in the many rooms of the Palace. Past and present experiences, epic, dramatic, happy and uncanny, will unfold in this series of short films, creating a multi-dimensions exploration of a truly remarkable building.

The Tbilisi Architecture Biennial (TAB) aims to catalyze a critical discussion within the city and provides a focused space where local, regional, and international professionals from diverse disciplines unite to discuss actual architectural and urban topics, share their ideas, arguments, and positions. Even before the pandemic forced us to do so, c/o now started to shift Lucius Burckhardt's strollology into the digital space. 

The so-called Googlewalks undertaken for this contribution respond to the question posed by the Tbilisi Architecture Biennale 2020 – What do we have in common? – and the upcoming theme of the Future Architecture platform – Landscapes of Care. 

The S AM Swiss Architecture Museum is the leading institution dealing with issues of contemporary architecture in Switzerland. Developed by students at the University of Kassel under the direction of Theo Deutinger, Pandemic Encounters is an analysis of the daily choreography needed to maintain the physical distancing rules put in place in the wake of COVID-19. 

The film forms part of a larger collection of analyses on the topic of “pandemic space”, which was added to the S AM exhibition “Under the Radar” in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Spazierengehen als Wissenschaft! - Oder, wie sich Freiheit auch erleben lässt.

Corona entfliehen beim Spazierengehen | (c) Petra Rietz - Wildwechsel Social Distancing ist angesagt. Die Kuschelsaison mit Glühwein auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt findet in diesem Jahr nicht statt. Glühwein geht auch allein, macht aber weniger Spaß. Soviel Distanz zu unseren Freunden und Mitmenschen scheint nicht unsere Natur zu sein. Aber die aktuelle Situation bietet uns die Möglichkeit, an anderer Stelle mehr Natur zuzulassen. Mit einem Spaziergang. Ein Spaziergang ist der Hammer! Der Philosoph Jean-Jacques Rousseau sagte schon: „Ich kann nur beim Gehen nachdenken. Bleibe ich stehen, tun dies auch meine Gedanken.“ Da bin ich ganz bei ihm. Und selbst in Corona-Zeiten ist Spazierengehen erlaubt. Spazierengehen ist gesund und boostet das Immunsystem. Spaziergangs-Hotspots sollte man natürlich meiden. Das macht es sowieso interessanter, weil der/die Entdecker/in gefragt ist. Ich kann nur beim Gehen nachdenken! Spazierengehen ist auch wissenschaftlich relevant. Die Promenadologie (auch Spaziergangswissenschaft und englisch Strollology) wurde an der Gesamthochschule Kassel von dem Soziologen Lucius Burckhardt begründet und hat von hier aus auch den Weg in Kunst gefunden. Beispielsweise beziehen sich Arbeiten wie Memoria Norway des Künstlerduos SpringerParker auf die Spaziergangswissenschaften Burkhardts. Ziel dieser Wissenschat ist die Erfassung und gedankliche Einordnung der Umwelt. Why is Landscape Beautiful?

Lucius Burckhardt

Lucius Burckhardt (1925-2003) taught architectural theory at Kassel University and, in the 1980s, coined the term "Promenadology"or the science of Strollology and developed this into a complex and far-sighted planning and design discipline.

Given that "the landscape" as an idea only exists in our heads, Burckhardt's writings (and drawings) are not so much concerned with beautiful vistas, but focus instead on the multi-faceted interaction a simple walk-taker has with his environment. To those who observe the environment with their eyes wide open, interesting questions will arise again and again; for example, why "city" and "country" can no longer be separated so easily in the face of progressive urbanization. Or why we consider a viaduct to be beautiful, but a nuclear power station an intrusion. And also, why gardens are works of art and should therefore be appraised as such. This book contains 28 texts by the design and planning critic, for the first time in English, with the focus on landscapes, gardens as an art form and the science of strollology.

Bonjour à tous et à toutes, Je voudrai tout d'abord dire Merci à Baptiste Lanaspéze d'avoir organisé ces 1éres Assises nationales des Sentiers Métropolitains, et remercier le MUCEM de nous accueillir…

1. Genèse de Parcours métropolitainS Créé il y a 3 ans, le projet de Parcours métropolitainS à Lyon imagine un tracé a priori qui ne sera que prétexte à s'en écarter pour l'éprouver lors de nos explorations sur le terrain, collectives et itératives, une cinquantaine ont déjà été faites… L'approche est morphologique, sensible, avec une posture socio-anthropologique, qui nous montre que la ville, surtout dans son péri-urbain, est un assemblage des cultures de chacun, qui structure le territoire.

Les frontières de la métropole sont tantôt nettement marquées, ou avec des contours flous. On peut suivre, dépasser, outre-passer, jouer avec ces lisières, trouver leurs interstices, traverser les dedans/et les dehors… La lisière est ainsi le point d’articulation d’un parcours métropolitain, à la fois cousant, raccordant, démarquant, rendant cohérent, ou fractionnant des portions de territoires, on peut donc la considérer comme une sorte de fil conducteur. Fil conducteur d’ailleurs bien nommé dans le cadre d’un tracé pédestre. Ceci nous a orienté vers l'ajout de la notion de lisière dans notre appellation, qui devient fin 2017 "Parcours métropolitainS, Grand Lyon et lisières". Le "S" final de métropolitainS souligne la diversité des cultures et des pratiques qui peuvent appréhender ces Parcours.

2. Organisation et animation de nos Parcours Nous imaginons une animation de ces Parcours avec 3 volets :

- une structure fédératrice, lançant des appels d'offre à balades, organisant un festival ou événement récurent de randonnée urbaine, et animatrice d'un réseau d'artistes marcheurs notamment avec des échanges de pratiques. Nous sommes déjà partie prenante dans le réseau international "Made of Walking", et nous menons une veille avec le réseau "Marcheurs d'ici et d'a(r)illeurs et avec les références de 650 documents en ligne sur SCRIBD [site de partage].

Ce lieu serait centre d'exposition, de narration, et de performances post camina... Plutôt qu'une forme de laboratoire qui rassemble des chercheurs et artistes, nous le voyons comme un refuge, ou mieux comme un bivouac pour les explorateurs. Un lieu très ouvert, pour les professionnels comme pour les amateurs. L'idée du bivouac évoque plus l'éphémère des Parcours, qui ne seraient jamais tout à fait les mêmes... Par ailleurs ce terme évoque la possibilité des nuitées et l'idée des marches nocturnes que nous explorons actuellement.

- le 2e volet est un fléchage du parcours, sur le terrain ou à travers un audio-guide ou une application mobile, cette dernière hypothèse, plus écologique, et plus légère, n'étant pas forcément exclusive.

- 3e volet : une approche sociale et pédagogique, par exemple en politique de la ville, ou l'habitant et l'usager local deviennent les experts du parcours.

3. Forme des Parcours métropolitains La pratique amène la forme : à Lyon le "Y" parait évident, c'est celui de la confluence, celui du parlé lyonnais, celui qui symbolise la trinité chrétienne dans la primatiale gauloise, celui des mages et alchimistes qui fantasment la fusion des 3 éléments dans une ville franc-maçonnique…

Sur cette forme en Y, se tresse une succession / un enchainement de cercles. C'est la symbolique des cercles borroméens, entrelacés, représentant trois boucles qui se tiennent ensemble, et dessinant à la fois un zone centrale, riche qui se veut l'évocation du Y lyonnais, et des courbes qui englobent la, ou plutôt les périphéries-lisières... Ces boucles ne sont pas fermées, laissant la porte ouverte à des possible, à une infinitude…

La forme qu'on vous montre aujourd'hui n'est pas figurative du parcours, elle est symbolique de l'esprit des Parcours métropolitainS…

4. Pratiques muséales Nous sommes ici au MUCEM [pour ces Assises nationales des Sentiers Métropolitains], ou la vitrine consacrée aux Sentiers Métropolitains, et la marque du GR2013 qui est présente au cœur du Musée, nous affirment que le Parcours croise le Musée. Ceci pose la question : d'un parcours objet, nos parcours sont ils des collections, doivent ils s'exposer au Musée ?

Nous pensons qu'il faut sortir du Musée pour aller sur le terrain, que nos Parcours & lisières sont à vivre, que la pratique est le Parcours... et nous rejoignons ici le concept de promenadology (Spaziergang wissen schaft ou strollology) à l'origine de Lucius Burckhardt : se promener pour apprécier le lieu, l'environnement, le plaisir de la marche.

La fraternité se révèle dans la marche, des liens se créent au cours du Parcours, sans besoin de savoir qui marche avec qui, ce qui compte c'est de marcher, de vivre le temps et l'espace. Ces frissons et émotions partagées seront l'occasion de créer des traces d'expériences, récits, textes, photos, griffonnages, poétique, et autres post camina. Toutes ces formes de récits, ou d'enregistrements réalisés in situ, vont peu à peu donner de l'épaisseur au Parcours, lui ajouter une composante temporelle, lui forger une histoire, lui donner identité.

Ainsi, au delà de la pratique, le Parcours prend une forme narrative qui lui permet d’interpeller le conservateur hors les murs et d'accéder à de nouvelles formes de Musée, à ciel ouvert et à 360°.

Vous avez vu des exemples de ces traces post camina dans le diaporama, notamment : - le Tracé topo-graphique du créateur David Bartholoméo - la carte mentale d'Alice Neveu, artiste marcheuse-performeuse - les photos de nuit de l'ergothérapeute Charlène Gruet - un écrit de la poétesse Catherine Serre - un croquis de la plasticienne Claire Daudin

Un autre exemple de trace est la captation sonore réalisée par le paysagiste sonore Gilles Malatray dont je vous propose d'écouter un extrait…

Voilà c'était quelques pas qui résonnent dans un superbe bâtiment…

5. Conclusion Les points de vue mis en place par une communauté de différents praticiens et/ou résidents, souvent en lisière les uns des autres, donnent à la fois une cohérence et une souplesse, où les approches sensibles les plus surprenantes inviteront sans cesse à de nouvelles expériences, tant individuelles que collectives.

Le récit paysager, humain, patrimonial, généré par le Parcours, et surtout par ses promeneurs, sera toujours en lisière de quelque chose, quelque chose d’autre, d’un autre territoire, d’une altérité qu’il nous importera de visiter, d'expérimenter, en marchant, encore et encore... et de partager/ restituer avec une création post camina.

Embersétáltatás – igen, valóban megértünk a kipusztulásra!

Viccnek indult, de nagy üzlet lett az embersétáltatás. Már készül hozzá az okostelefonos alkalmazás, és hamarosan globális vállalkozás lehet. Nem azért teszi, mert idegenvezető. És nem is azért, mert idősápoló. Hanem azért, mert Amerikában – ott is az egyik legautósabb városban, Los Angelesben – fizetőképes kereslet mutatkozott arra, hogy felnőtteket sétáltasson. Chuck McCarthy eredetileg azt tervezte, hogy kutyákat sétáltat, de nem volt kedve a kutyapiszokkal bíbelődni, és eljátszott a gondolattal: mi lenne, ha inkább embereket sétáltatna?

Ez viccnek tűnt, de az első hirdetések nyomán kiderült, hogy valóban szükség van erre a szolgáltatásra. A mostanában kétéves vállalkozáshoz már 35 sétáltató csatlakozott. Az üzlet közel áll ahhoz, hogy megalapozza Chuck megélhetését, amire szüksége is lenne, mert ő egyike annak a rengeteg színésznek, akik Hollywood közelében szerepekre várnak, de többnyire hiába. Chuck még nagy, bozontos szakállat is növesztett, abban a reményben, hogy hajléktalanszerepeket kap, de egyelőre inkább a sétáltatás a biztos. Már előkészületben van a kisvállalkozás okostelefonos alkalmazása, és kovácsolódnak a nagyratörő tervek az üzlet kiterjesztéséről egész Kaliforniára, sőt talán az egész világra.

A társadalmi háttér kétségkívül az emberek elmagányosodása, bár Chuck árnyalja a képet. Ügyfelei között sokan vannak, akiknek családjuk és sok barátjuk van, csak éppen nincsenek egymás közelében, vagy a manapság gyakori szabálytalan foglalkoztatás miatt nem esik egybe a szabadidejük. Akadnak olyan megrendelők is, akiknek az egészségi állapotuk miatt van szükségük kísérőre. Meg persze olyanok is, akik valóban magányosak, de röstellnék, ha egyedül bóklásznának az utcán vagy a parkban. A szolgáltatás eleinte mérföldenként 7 dollárba került, de mivel nem mindenki egyforma sebességgel gyalogol, ma már félóránként 15 dolláros egységáron dolgozik az embersétáltató (people walker) csapat. A dologban persze nem csupán a testgyakorlás fontos. „Olyasmi ez, mintha valaki gyónni menne vagy felkeresne egy kocsmát, egy terapeutát vagy egy fodrászt” – mondta a vállalkozó az AFP hírügynökség riporterének. Ő mint sétáltató ráadásul sokkal kedvesebb a kuncsaftokhoz, mint a személyi edzők a konditermekben – ecsetelte vállalkozása további előnyeit egy helyi blognak.

A sétálás egyetemen is tanulmányozható. A promenadológia (angolul strollology) atyjának a 2003-ban elhunyt Lucius Burckhardt svájci szociológust és közgazdászt tartják. Az élhetőbb, autómentesebb városokért folyó harc jegyében ő vezette be ezt a tudományágat az 1980-as években a kasseli művészeti főiskolán. Ott most Martin Schmitz professzor vezeti a kurzusokat, amelyekhez szórakoztató performanszok is tartoznak. Megesett például, hogy a főiskolai gyalogosok parkolójegyet váltottak, majd székkel, asztalokkal letelepedtek piknikezni az üres helyre. Burckhardt nevezetes happeningjei közé tartozott, hogy 1993-ban ő és tanítványai zebracsíkos szőnyeget ragadtak, és a mobil gyalogátkelőhelyet kedvük szerint terítették le ott, ahol át szerettek volna menni a túloldalra. Ugyanabban az évben egy csapatnyi gyalogló egyszerű szélvédővel és visszapillantó tükörrel vonult végig az autótlanított utcákon. Bár a promenadológiai események leginkább kortárs művészeti kiállítások részei voltak, a demonstratív akcióknak más hátterük is van. Schmitz építész és várostervező, szakterülete pedig főképp annak vizsgálata, hogyan hat az emberekre a város és a közlekedés. Kollégája, Bertram Weisshaar (szintén Burckhardt tanítványa) Lipcsében hivatásos sétáló. Várostervezők megbízásából gyalogolja végig az átalakítás előtt álló negyedeket. Feladata, hogy idejében szóljon, mit nem szabad elrontani, nehogy a lakosság utólag tiltakozzon a környék elrondítása miatt.

the emphasis on disorientation with documenta draws attention to the surfaces of the map and highlight that there are many ways of getting to a certain location / there was an intent to produce a ‘map’ as a score or script rather than as a set of directions

calling guided tours of documenta “walks" (rather than “guided tours”) was an attempt at altering their rhetoric; similarly, guides within documenta form ‘the chorus’ 

the term for guide in german is führer, which was potentially problematic, however having to translate things into three languages brought all possibilities into the mix > variously, the chorus was known as ‘sirens’, ‘army’, ‘resourceful humans’ 

in ancient Greece, the ‘chorus’ comprised non-professional members in theatre acting as a kind of conduit between the actors and the public > this was though interesting in terms of power relations (e.g. who listens and who talks) 

the 'middle voice’ (between passive and active) doesn't give a clear sense of who is the subject and what is the action > the chorus is in some way the middle voice between art works and the public

the chorus have become a political force, they'll arrange themselves and unionise > a symposium :)

Walking as an artistic practice and artistic research (workshop) The Grenzgang project team started its investigation in strollology and space in January 2014 in the trinationalarea around Basel. Strolling tours of the team members–sometimes supplemented by guests from non-European countries–as well as questions of team research form the basis of the investigations. Against thebackground of their own discipline–music, visual arts and art education–the researchers bring in their specific strategies to create individual, artistic space protocols.

Un atelier de pratique artistique et de recherche L'équipe de projet « Grenzgang » a débité ses recherche autour de la « marchologie » et de l’espace en janvier 2014 dans la région de Bâle (Suisse). Des promenades guidées ont été proposées par des membres de l'équipe - parfois complétées par des invités de pays non européens. De même, le questionnement de problématiques de recherche en équipe ont constitué la base des recherches. En toile de fond de leurs disciplines: musique, arts visuels, éducation artistique, les chercheurs proposent leurs propres stratégies spécifiques pour mettre en place des protocoles concernant l’espace, l’individu et les gestes artistique
