“I’m gonna head in for the evening.” I spin on my heel, backing toward my room and giving a little wave. 

“Do you wanna sleep in the nest with us tonight?” Bucky offers, pressing up from Steve’s chest, gaze shining with eagerness.

I pause, freezing mid-step, thoughts sent flying.

“I wouldn’t want to intrude,” I hedge, toeing at the ground and refusing to meet their expectant gazes.

My heart pounds in my ear, body aching for theirs pressed to mine. That familiarity, that comfort from which I’ve been deprived since Steve moved in. I can be a big girl and admit I miss it. Snuggling with Bucky on the sofa doesn’t feel quite the same as when we had our nest.

They remain frozen for a moment, exchanging a glance. I wait for their reconsideration—the retraction of their offer.

But they burst like a ripe water balloon. Spewing words over each other that I can’t understand. Tangled together, they attempt to stand but fail and fall back into the cushions.

A laugh shakes my chest, fully entertained by their antics. My hand raises in a signal for them to pause.

“Just hold on a second,” I chuckle, shaking my head, “I still gotta get ready for bed. I’ll meet you in your room when I’m done.”

My eyes roll as I turn, the mirth lingering even as I prepare for sleep. Until I’m left staring at my pjs sitting at the foot of my bed. The giant t-shirt barely covers my rear, leaving an ample view of my panties clinging to my ass. Twisting one way then the other, I debate whether they’ll be comfortable with me in this, in their personal space, their nest.

“No,” I chide. Refusing to even venture down that road. Their nest. I sigh. “Fuck it.”

My door swings open, stopped from smacking against the wall by my hand. A breeze brushes past my face at the force but I hardly feel it. All my attention focuses on psyching myself up for this night I’m about to experience.

The living room is dark, probably long abandoned once I agreed to a night in their nest—platonic, it’s platonic.

I can’t help grumbling to myself as I walk the distance which stretches miles between my bedroom and theirs. My hand shakes as I reach up to rap my knuckles against their door.

But it isn’t closed, opening inward to reveal them both waiting for me with eager smiles.

Steve holds a book in his hand, looking ready to spend some time relaxing before his slumber, even as his tail flicks on the bedding in delight. Bucky, though—he’s patting the space between them with a killer smile and scrunching in his adorably excited way as if he might pounce.

I steel my nerves. Knowing this night will be a Herculean feat of self control. Cause, boy howdy, are my emotions gonna take a hit tomorrow when the offer isn’t there.

I crawl between them, movements stilted and halting. Waiting for them to change their mind until I’m laying on my back.

Bucky wastes no time at all, wrapping around me like he used to. I swallow down the tears, feeling warm and comforted by his weight. He’s heavy, it’s true, but nothing in the world can make me feel as safe and protected. To know I’ll be kept snug and cherished throughout the night.

My eyes flick to Steve, staring down at the two of us with an enigmatic smile on his lips.

“Are you sure you’re alright with this, Steve?” I ask, needing to know I’m truly welcome here.

He laughs, belly shaking. “You’re funny,” he snickers, patting me on my head with a softness spreading through his gaze. “Sleep tight, li’l one.”

My lips purse over a protest, but Bucky only draws me closer—as if he left any space between us before.

Steve may stay awake for a while to read and Bucky might rearrange us to his liking, but as soon as I let myself relax—to really revel in being held so tenderly—I’m out like a light.

A claw tickles against my cheek. Nose scrunching at the sensation, I whine in the back of my throat. I’m awake earlier than I want, that’s for sure. I’m so cozy where I am.

Last night rushes in. Pulse spiking with the realization that I am still between them. Even though Bucky, at least, is awake. I expect soon I will be excised from their nest to start the day alone.

What I don’t expect is the loving, lingering pressure of lips against mine, my cheek cupped gently by a hand.

Shock crashes over my head like a bucket of ice. My eyes snap open, Bucky retreating with a pleased smile.

A garbled sound spills past my lips—a question and accusation all in one. I rise and push at his coils around me. My stomach roils as I glance over my shoulder, seeing Steve sleeping and at peace.

“What are you doing?” I hiss, trying to stand and fighting back tears.

“Kissing you good morning,” Bucky replies, confusion etched on his brow. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself—” My heart cracks at the pain in his voice, how small it becomes when he apologizes.

I swallow and push myself away from him to stand. “No,” I croak, unable to form a word in a level tone, “You’re with Steve. You can’t just—” My hands flail at the space between us, hoping to shed some kind of logical light on the situation. “Bucky, I can’t do that to you two.”

Steve stirs and awakens. The smile on his lips drops at the sight of me standing above Bucky, tears welling upon my lash line.

“Wait,” Bucky begs, reaching out for me.

I jump away from him instead, a rash decision solidifying in my head the longer I let myself look between them. A sinking feeling in my stomach.

“I’m moving out,” I announce.

“The fuck you are,” Steve retorts immediately, voice still husky with sleep. “Why?”

No one answers him. Bucky’s stunned speechless, eyes just as tear-filled as mine. And I refuse to let Bucky’s slip come between them.

After a moment of glaring between us, Steve huffs an agitated breath. “Will someone just tell me what the fuck has happened?”

“I just need to leave.” It’s not an explanation, but I can’t—I just can’t. After months of watching them together, wishing to be part of it, imagining a perfect world, to have that sweet confirmation of Bucky’s feelings after years of pining for my best friend while he’s with someone else, this last straw has broken me. “I’m so sorry.”

Steve and Bucky both start to say something, their syllables jumbled in my head while I rush from the room. They’re left behind when I stumble into my room and lock the door.

Before a clear thought forms in my head, my phone sits in my hand, calling Natasha. Willing to face her anger at being awoken so early before considering facing either of my roommates.

“Shit, shit, shit,” I chant, waiting to connect.

“This had better be life or death,” Natasha threatens over the line.

Not an ounce of me has the wit to be scared out of. I can only sniffle and say, “Tash, it’s all been fucked up. I—I can’t stay here anymore. Can I—”

She shushes me with a harsh sound. “Tell me what happened.”

“I slept in their nest last night and this morning, Bucky kissed me—like kissed me kissed me. Like he meant it. But he can’t,” I explain, sniffing and wiping my eyes on my arm. “I should never have said yes. I fucked up, Nat. Steve’s gonna hate me once he realizes. And I can’t stay when I know Bucky feels that way about me.” My voice warbles. It’s a miracle Natasha can understand a word I say, most lost in tears and hiccups and sobs.

She curses in Russian, a string of words that grate against my ear as I wait for her to say something I’ll be able to understand. “You,” she snaps over the phone, “Stay put. I’m coming over.”

She doesn’t give me a moment to respond before the call beeps in my ear, signaling that she’s hung up.

My feet would wear a hole in my rug if Natasha didn’t show up. When I hear the knock on the front door, it’s the only thing that stops me. Waiting and listening for her.

While her knock on the front door is polite, she barges into my room. The door whips in on its hinges and smacks the wall. I jump. Eyes wide and staring at my friend in what I can only assume is a hastily put on outfit of sweatpants which probably belong to Sam, an oversized shirt, and sleep mask acting as a headband for her fiery hair. She’s not even wearing real shoes, socks and fuzzy bunny slippers covering her feet. I can only imagine what she looks like without her glamour.

She mutters under her breath. More foreign phrases I can’t understand while marching behind me and pushing on my shoulders. My head shakes and I dig my heels in, but she’s much stronger than me. I stand no chance, though it doesn’t keep me from trying.

Steve and Bucky glance up as we enter the living room, both sitting on the couch with forlorn expressions marring their features.

My protest perches on my lips, but only an unintelligible noise passes before she shushes me again and sets me beside our friends and my roommates.

“I have to do everything,” she grouses, crossing her arms over her chest and glaring. She lobs what are probably frustrated Russian insults at us before running a hand down her face and groaning in irritation. “You’re all idiots.” She turns to me in a flash of movement, taking her place as the focal point in the room. “You first,” she points at me. “These two,” she gestures to Steve and Bucky, “are in love with you. Madly in love. You confessed your mutual love to them at Clint’s party a few months ago and they think they’ve been dating you ever since.”

My lips part and close. Brain trying to process the revelation. Short circuiting like a computer on the fritz.

“And you two,” Natasha continues, addressing the minotaur and naga, “she was drunk and doesn’t remember telling you. But she still loves you the same. She just didn’t realize what’s been happening.” Her hands raise in the air with a huff. “There! No more misunderstanding.”

Steve gapes at her. But Bucky looks to me, guarded. I’m still frozen, replaying every moment of our lives together since Clint’s birthday party. Piecing together each instance until the picture becomes clear.

Natasha mutters some more, spinning on her heel and marching toward our front door.

Bucky says my name, soft and searching. I snap from my daze and meet his eye.

“Is it true?” I ask, voice near a whisper.

“Yes,” Steve confirms, fingers twitching on his thigh. Wanting to reach over, but hesitant.

“Oh,” I mutter with a hard swallow. “Okay. Good.”

“Good?” Bucky asks, tone tinged with ill-concealed hope.

I nod, tearing up for an entirely happy reason.

“Very good,” I confirm, laughing and vaulting from my seat to tackle both of them to the couch—relieved and ecstatic beyond words.

They wrap me in their arms, tucked tight and safe in their embrace, each taking a moment to press their lips to mine. I sigh and snuggle into them, ready for this next chapter of our lives, finally on the same page.

The day was just the pits. Honestly, the pits of hell.

There was no choice whether to fight or not. Nor was there any time to prepare, collect intelligence, put together a plan, inform the team and wait for backup – hell, even to get enough fire power! – not a minute to spare. Without any warning, a ghostly maw of a portal into some clearly hostile reality gaped open – and the only option was to jump into it, even at the risk of a one-way trip. Jump, stand fast, and fight to the death against whatever was trying to invade our good old Earth.

Standing to the death – just the two of us – because there was no one else. The planet had had really good luck (although for them it was possibly the opposite) that right next to the portal, completely by accident, happened to be two super soldiers.

How tired they were! How hesitant initially, before they forced the portal to close; before they traversed the tunnel to the end and ripped the heads off the dirtbags that had opened the portal in the first place; before they made it back, not really knowing how.

The place from which they had left and to which they returned was nice; quiet; peaceful. Green grass, sunny skies. The training course was empty, thankfully; they had come to “play tag”, just the two of them; they booked this time slot so they wouldn’t be distracted by anyone. Those who didn’t get that time slot were truly lucky. The maw-portal would have gobbled up anyone who happened to be nearby. That is, anyone but the two of them. They proved to be too big a bite for it.

Which didn’t stop it from giving it its best shot.

“To the doctors?” lying on his back, arms stretched out wide, staring at the fluffy small clouds asked Steve. He wasn’t worried about himself, although his left cheek was lacerated below the helmet, and his wrist was dislocated: his shield got stuck in the spine of one of the monsters, and he had to knock out the other that got too close with his bare fist.

“The hell with them,” said Bucky, lying next to him. “The hell with the docs. I wanna go home.”

“But Buck…”

“Go… home,” Buck repeated distinctly, his tone implacable.

Grunting like two crotchety old men (who they were, technically), they sat up on the ground. Steve did his best to wipe the slime off his shield with handfuls of grass, while Bucky tied off his bleeding thigh with an equipment belt.

“Home,” Barnes repeated when, holding onto each other, they limped towards the vehicle outside the testing course, like a wounded quadruped. “You drive.” And he closed his eyes, slumping over the front passenger seat like a black-and-red blob.

Ouch, it hurt.

“Give me your hand, dammit!” Bucky cursed hoarsely, leaning against the corridor wall. “My stuff is drying up, relax. You go first.”

With joint effort, they managed to pull the jacket sleeve off Rogers’ wrist before taking off the rest of his protective suit. Then they got rid of Bucky’s armor in the same fashion.

“To the shower,” Steve asked, biting his lips.

“Sure. As long as you don’t hit on me,” Barns joked darkly, leaning back against the wall. All holes in their hides should have closed up by now, after all the time that’d passed, but no. Devil knew whether the teeth of the damned monsters sank too deep as they were tearing protective suits to shreds, or the saliva that got into the wounds slowed the effect of the serum. The leg and shoulder began bleeding again, as soon as the tourniquets were removed.

Warm water running over the pair’s head and shoulders, washing away grime and fatigue, and relieving the muscle stiffness just a little. Bucky closed his eyes and leaned his head back on to Steve’s shoulder who, with his inactive hand tucked between his side and Bucky’s bionics, awkwardly moved the sponge over his chest, belly, and battered and bruised ribcage. Barnes also had to wash Steve with one arm: on the other, the monster’s fangs had torn a decent chunk of fresh out of the bicep.

They make their way to the bedroom still supporting one another and use two out of their four hands to get dressed. An overstatement, really: Steve manages to pull on sweats and a T-shirt, while Bucky, mindful of the assortment of dressings we’d need, only puts on his boxer shorts. Stupid all of it, just stupid: as if they are embarrassed of each other; as if they’ve never seen each other naked and just out of the shower and in general… It’s as though they are still out of it after the skirmish and want some illusion of bodily protection.

They put a fresh bandage on Bucky’s shoulder; Bucky sets Steve’s wrist, then puts a Band-Aid over his cheekbone; Rogers gets down on one knee and begins to put a wide dressing on Barnes’ thigh. And that’s where one of Rogers’ quirks kicks in. In a fight, he is cool-headed, decisive, and sharp – but afterwards, when it’s all over, it comes over him. Images of everything that could have happened but didn’t pierce him like dozens of fléchettes, making him shake and tremble from the backlash of the past and avoided danger. And here he goes again, reliving everything they’d been through. As Bucky, sparing with their limited ammo, again and again engages the monsters in close combat; as he, a sniper – more used to providing Steve fire cover from a distance! – attacks the filth advancing on the Captain from the flanks and the back. That’s how he came by the injuries Steve was just dressing…

And, no longer able to hold it in, to restrain himself, Rogers presses his forehead, his cheek – his very self – against Bucky’s hip, and then, still kneeling before him, kisses the dumbfounded Barnes practically into the wound under the dressing.

Bucky stares down at Steve.

What is he to do with him like this, huh?

The right thing to do is to let him get it all out of his system, catch his breath; bury his fingers in Steve’s short golden locks at the top of his head and stroke the sculp until he calms down.

The former, long-ago Bucky from Brooklyn would have done something like that.

That former, long-ago Bucky, who was no more, had generally been a man who did the right thing.

The post-Winter Barnes, as he is now, has a far more complex relationship with what is right. And with many other things, too.

And this – what he is feeling now, what flows through his veins and pulsates in his temples and in the back of his head – is one of those things.

James Buchanan Barnes remembers being Winter Soldier. He remembers the fighting and the missions. The tension, the adrenaline in his blood boiled during fighting then as it does now: they hadn’t completely succeeded in making him into a machine, after all. But as for the targets of those missions, he didn’t care at all. When necessary, he would interact with agents or fighters, with those he was supposed to protect or cover, but they held no interest to him as individual; never – neither during missions, nor afterwards – did he care about what happened to them then or later.

But now, it wasn’t like that.

When it is Steve he covers, James feels fire in his belly. Oh yes, of course, Captain America is no less of a super soldier he is, even more perfect than him. Of course, Steven Grant Rogers is good at and is used to fighting; of course, these wounds are mere scratches to this huge war machine, they will heal in a matter of hours. Sometimes, what matters most is what they are fighting for: just like today, no price for stopping the enemy would have been too high to pay.

James Buchanan Barnes understands all this – and he accepts, like he always has, Rogers’ right and duty to go into battle. But “this isn’t a back alley fight, Steve, it’s war!” – and the former Winter Soldier knows everything about war. Sometimes people get killed, even on the verge of victory. And this knowledge drives James berserk. Oh, how he has wished he had one hundred arms, like the Giant Briareus, every one of them holding a weapon or, like Zeus, turn into a lightning cloud and envelop Steve safely inside!

But no, he can only do what he can do.

And therefore, he, too, is overcome after the battle. Not like Steve, with trembling from the backlash. He is overtaken by a powerful need to feel that both of them are alright. That they made it out alive and would live. Right now, in this very moment. And he needs to feel it all, not just know it.

He can keep himself in check, hold the burning need inside, hide it. And it would not be all that difficult: he is so very tired. He is battered, his ribs, shoulders, and legs bruised, his thigh aching, the wound above his elbow throbbing like an impacted tooth. To crawl under the blanket, to close his eyes, and he’d be out like a light…

Bucky falls backwards on the bed, dragging Steve over himself, presses him close, one arm around him. Chest to chest, cheek to cheek, skin to skin. Hearing Steve’s breathing with his ears, his even warmth, his unbroken pulse with his fingers.

And their life – with all of himself.

the two of them used to hunt together, before Bucky turned. they were some of the most well-known mercenaries in the country, at least before the accident.

Bucky was swarmed by a pack of werewolves during an ambush and, when the blood cleared from his eyes and he was alone, Steve accepted his death reluctantly. it was a hazard of their job, one he had learned early on he had to be okay with.

it’s not until years later, when Steve is hired to eradicate a werewolf tormenting a small town that he sees Bucky again, even though neither recognizes the other at first.

it’s during a full moon that Steve makes his attack; wolves become frantic when the light hangs heavy in the sky. they make mistakes.

Steve had fought his fair share of werewolves before, during, and after working with Bucky, but nothing like this. the creature was massive, saliva dripping in threads from bloody fangs and white fur streaked with viscera and grime. it was feral. there was no humanity behind its yellow canine eyes, even the last vestiges that the wolves he had seen before had.

he doesn’t even recognize the wolf as Bucky until he manages to wound it. his sword blade through the meat if it’s shoulder. the creature screams, not even a howl, and for just a moment, the shock of digging pain brings the animal out of its trance and Steve sees it. sees him. just a glimpse, barely a difference, but it’s face falls into something more human, more his friend.

as the moon begins to set the werewolf uses Steve’s distraction to escape, eyes flashing back to sick yellow as it moves once again into the thick darkness of the woods, only a trial of blood and a stunned Steve left behind.

Just imagine a lil Stevie Rogers tryna make it in the world. A brilliant young boy with a keen mind for science, stuck in a facility to help him live.

Enter Brock Rumlow, just another kid with bad blood running through his veins. Dubbed Arnie by Stevie, after a string of boys that always end up leaving the facility in body bags, Brock and the little blond mastermind become good friends.

Fast Forward to the Future

Dr. Steven "Steve" Rogers and Arnie are still best friends. Arnie funds Steve's research for a cure to their disease and others like them.

Enter Dr. James "Bucky" Barnes, army vet turned scientist with a metal arm to show for his efforts.

Working with Dr. Rogers was something else, the guy was a firecracker with a mind for the ages. Bucky learned so much from Steve, he grew to admire the blond's inner strength that made him seem larger than life, his willingness to help people, to give his all in order to save lives.

Once Bucky realizes what Steve's research is actually about and what he plans to do... well, Bucky goes with him. He's not going to allow Steve to do this alone! Absolutely not, Steve would have to count his fuckin' days if he ever thought he would be attempting self-experimentation on his own! He's going to make sure nothing happens to him, even if he has to conduct the procedure with Steve. Save that little asshole from himself...

It breaks Bucky's heart to see Steve lyin' on that table like that but if helps him live, he'll wait by his side because that's what partners do. He doesn't know how he'll react if something goes wrong, he doesn't know how he'll go on without his Stevie.

Of course, things do end up doing wrong. Sleazy mercenaries that think they're above everyone get caught in the crosshairs and Bucky, well... he gets hurt.

Steve can't believe what he's done. Bucky's lying there on the ground, he's still alive - heartbeat strong in his chest, metal arm resting limp at his side. All he knows is that he can't leave Bucky like this... but he can't get caught in the crosshairs by the authorities either. So he makes a call... then he leaves...

Steve is a scientist at his core, he knows he'll have to see just how powerful he has become, to understand just what he can do. Of course that comes with consequences when Arnie comes back into the picture with his own desire to live. Steve knows that no one can get their hands on the serum he created, not even Arnie.

Bucky wakes in a daze to officers in his hospital room. So many questions about Steve's whereabouts, about dead mercenaries, about unsanctioned experiments, but he says nothing. He knows nothing, he hit his head and blacked out, there's nothing he can help the officers with. He would rather die than turn on Stevie.

Bucky knows the cops will be watching him after that interview though. He weaves through the city with his work bag on his shoulder, trying to lose his tail. He speaks Romanian with the bodega owner before dashing out the back of the store and onto the next bus that comes his way.

Hearing Steve's voice behind him sends tremors of relief and desire through his veins. Stevie's okay, is all Bucky can think. There is no way he will let the little bastard out of his sight again. Only, he's a big bastard now.

Stevie as always needs Bucky's help. Arnie has lost his marbles and stole a vial of the serum to become the monster Steve wanted to protect the world from. Bucky vows to do whatever it takes to help Steve, he always will, till the end of the line.

Getting back into the lab is easy for Bucky. No cops anywhere, retrieving everything Steve needs will be a breeze. Or it should have been. Arnie was waiting for him, or rather, for his Stevie. It's easy to keep his heartbeat calm but how long will he be able to keep this up?

Bucky returns to Stevie's side in the makeshift lab where they spend a little time getting reacquainted with each other. Where they can finally act on desires they've had for awhile.

The moment doesn't last but often times they never do. Being pulled away from Bucky never settles well in Steve's stomach but his old mentor needs his help.

It's obvious that all this was Arnie's doing to draw him away from his Bucky. That much is plain when he hears both of them calling on the wind. Stevie, Stevie, Stevie. Arnie's plan in drawing Steve out works, nothing will keep him from Bucky but it's too late. A kiss of death is all Steve can give Bucky. All Bucky wants is for it to mean something as his life slips away from him but not before taking a bit of Stevie's blood into himself.

A fight to the death between Stevie and Arnie, Brock, sees Steve as the winner while Bucky claws his way back to life.

With one careful claw, she tweaked his path through time into a twisting loop. Wayward and abandoned though he was, N'Jadaka was still of her tribe. He could set things right, if given the chance. Erik gets a do-over. Erik gets a lot of do-overs. Or: Erik Killmonger's own personal version of Groundhog Day, only with a lot more murder, dying, trips to the ancestral plane, awkward family conversations, and divine intervention.

Summary: Steve has only ever wanted to help people. Maybe that's part of the reason why it nearly tears his heart in two the first time he watches Bucky die. He can't help but think of the 'what if's'. What if he'd been there sooner? What if he'd been able to stop it? By the five hundredth time he watches Bucky die though, the whole situation's really starting to lose it's charm. (Or: Bucky is stuck in a time loop, and Steve is accidentally along for the ride.)
