Unexpected Conversations

Unexpected Conversations – Oil on canvas, 2025, 20 × 30 cm Still a work in progress, but I wanted to jot down a few thoughts while the paint’s still wet — metaphorically, at least. This painting started from a photo I took at Whipsnade Zoo. There was a moment where a chimpanzee sat quietly in the grass, arms relaxed, eyes almost closed. She wasn’t doing anything in particular, but the stillness…

Studio Notes:

It’s less about photographic influence and moreso how my work can be contextualized through the canon. The work that prompted this notion was coming across Martin Parr’s work. Similar in aesthetic yet I’ve never really spent time learning about him or looking at his work. 

Photographic history does so much for me. There’s so much to be learned, as I’m exposed to more artist and photographers it allows me to consider work I may have not before

too early? never early

i've been thinking about my unwillingness to lean in as i want to with the sonic, my devotion to this old but new love. if it wasn't that i knew myself and my wont to turn to other worthy distractions, i would listen to the body and submit to its turn of desire.

with the music

i’ve tried to make it a space of less severity as i intend to do everywhere else. i want to be serious and precious everyartwork else, but the music like what will be put out as songs and eps? the main focus is levity and a child-like playfulness, joy that reaches the bones, my chest, all the crevices i meet myself. conceptual heft and all of that can follow the music that accompanies the choreolyrics (ahhh, there we have it)

and on that note

i’d like to make up for the body’s unwillingness to be with october’s main devotion by remembering and noting what it is i said:

it was felt in most vapour wave tracks, in some frank ocean, kelsey lu, moses sumney, alt-j’s psychedelic an awesome wave and bon-iver’s 22 a million... although this album felt more like the prefiguring of fragments and all i would submit myself too on the lyric...

and even then, what i want conceptual heft to be is less reason and more spirit—

but taking it home with the bata, gangan,  

what drums can stand in the bassline; strings of violin 🎻 with the mother and cello with the father, i with my distant familiarity with the water.  

relation: what can sound like drowning? submersion in the water?  

how will waywardness sound?

that said, all above it later later. i gatta spill fun, be comfortable with flow and rhythm, mines or learned. it has to be fun

and as for the visuals that consume my hours

the body remembered emulsion lifts and that will work for the thin layer that looks inseparable from the surface of the canvass. i would experiment with that before the time i try out direct uv prints on canvas—-

i. receive my digital photos,

ii. set riso-fied, raw photo experiments, and text on boards to print at lucky riso.

iii. play around with negative space and on oil pastels.

and maybe a series of some sort in readiness for by rot by light.

and a note of encouragement 

walk into the sonics as a playground, when the tide of visuals comes back around, it will be nice to have them integrated with wherever we’re at,  

so when we forget or feel overwhelmed, start with the most basic, the lyre, freestyling.
