Finally back in lab! There will definitely be a learning curve as I get used to the new sanitation/scheduling protocols, plus planning experiments is trickier now that everything takes longer to ship but I'm excited 😄 it feels good to be making concrete progress on my thesis project

@studiousmedic asked: Mary!!! You have a lovely put together wardrobe, do you have any tips on putting together a nice wardrobe and dressing like a grown up/not looking like a teenage boy forced into the sunlight by his concerned mother?
hello !! This has taken me an age to reply to, but I’ve thought about it loads and I really just love talking about clothes! Also I just wanna preface this with saying that you absolutely don’t have to completely change your style to “dress like a grown up” - it’s all about just implementing a few things that’ll make the outfits you already have and wear into the outfits you wanna / feel like you should wear
I’m a big believer in keeping the basis of your outfit the same, but making small changes. No, not that “Add a sCARF !!!” pintrest bullshit (low key i love pintrest but it needs to stop with this shit). Say your go to outfit is a band tee, jeans, and vans. Ain’t nothing wrong with that, that’s a solid outfit. However, if you’re feeling like you wanna step up the “adult, professional and put together” factor, here is what I would do:
- Exchange band tee for either a plain tshirt or even a patterned blouse with a tshirt shape. I’m personally not a fan of patterned tshirts, or tshirts with stuff on them. Although if you wanna go for a more subtle graphic tee, go for it! I also think tshirt shaped blouses are amazing, because they’ve still got that kind of casual vibe that comes with a tshirt, but just stepped up a notch thanks to the fabric
- I’d personally wear a darker wash jean, just because I think that has a tendency to look more “adult”. Black jeans are also a go-to for me, although I am not a fan of rips or distressing, and I prefer a true black to a washed black
- Exchange the vans for something like a pair of boots, a ballet flat, loafers, brogues, you name it. If you’re into a heel, I think that looks amazing 98% of the time, but I get u, we have places to walk, they hurt, they have a tendency to make us fall over, so feel free to never go near a heel ever
Tumblr media
Also, you can continue this mindset into outfits with more pieces as well. Usually go for something like a kanken backpack? (me too, i love them) To step it up, maybe try a plain black leather one instead. Wanna take your bottoms a step further than a dark wash jean? Get a pair of comfortable trousers in a nice fabric that makes you feel great about the way they make your body look. Hoodie feeling a bit dressed down compared to what you wanna go for? Try a nice knitted jumper, a cardigan, or even a soft blazer.
So that’s my main philosophy. If I look at my outfit and feel like it’s not quite as put together or dressed up as I would like, I try to think “What is one item that I could switch up to get it to the vibe I want?”.
However, another thing I think makes a great difference (as in the pictures above), is colour. I am very Scandinavian. I like my neutrals and my solid colours, and I feel like you have a lot better of a chance to look “put together” or “adult” or “more expensive”, depending on what you’re going for, if you pay a lot of attention to colour and pattern. Of course, this is even more “personal preference” than what I’ve talked about so far. Personally, I like neutrals (black, white, grey, navy, camel, and blush pink (which for me is nude because lol my skin tone)), as well as jewel tones. That’s what I vibe with. As for patterns, I love a good dark-base-floral, and I’m slowly opening up to other patters (although usually only in neutrals).
A lot of the time my entire outfit will be a combination of solid neutrals. But if I wanna go for a print or a colour, I usually make sure that that piece is the only non-solid-neutral one. That’s because I’m not a huge fan of busy outfits, and I usually think that the busier your outfit is, the more difficult it is to make it seem “put together” and “adult”. This also goes for things like ripped / distressed jeans, accessories etc. I wear my belt if necessary, a scarf if I’m cold, and the same watch, couple of rings, and dainty hoop earrings every day.
I will say it again though, you don’t have to give up your personal style. You really love your band tees? Amazing, keep wearing them! Still want to make your outfit more “adult”? Maybe pair them with a pair of trousers, boots, possibly a blazer. (little anecdote: i have a white blouse with bright pink flamingos on that i for some reason adore. one of my favourite outfits i’ve worn it in was pairing it with my black suit (quite modern trousers, but trousers and blazer all the same) and white trainers. a great balance of oooooo fun print, but super traditional suit/shirt combo, casual-ed down by the trainers) There is definitely a way to work “your style” which for me is more about “oh my god i love this piece and want to wear it all the time” into the whole “adult, professional, put together” thing.
Idek man this is so long and it’s before 10 am on a bank holiday. Am I even making sense? Who knows. But that’s my two (thousand) cents and I hope maybe it was helpful ?? Maybe ???
(also ily beb and you look fab in all your pictures and not like a teenage boy i promise)

studiousmedic replied to your photoset “05.07.18 // long time no post! things have just been busy busy! but in...”
The dress is beautiful!!! Also what stain/counter stain are you using for your sections?
thank you!!!
so in that picture it’s a murine leg bone with human tumor cells. i stained it with TRAP to look for osteoclasts (they show up as red/purple), and then counterstained nuclei with hematoxylin (blue). the bone also shows up a bit lavender (maybe just non-specific from either stain) and the red blood cells are clear, but bc of light refraction or something they look yellow-ish.

I’m currently in my third year of med school and would love to get involved in research, but I’m finding it pretty hard to do so.
Would anyone know about any remote research opportunities, or how to search for them? 🙏🏼

7 Comfort Movies
Tagged by @movioletta @do-no-harm-hopefully and @loreleys-road-to-md!! Thank you guys for the tags! 😋💕 (and @Leyla I definitely don't mind the triple tag 😂)
So....disclaimer : I'm a huge weeb, and also love animated films to death. Hence, my list is mostly gonna be a mish mash of those 😂
Here we go :
1. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Tumblr media
This is my ultimate comfort film, and one of my top favorites from Studio Ghibli. To those who haven't seen it, I definitely recommend. It's a film about a young witch navigating her way through a new world of her own and meeting people on the way. It's more like a journey than a film, about relying on yourself, about our complicated relationship with our own talents and shortcomings, about adjusting, about creativity and what it means to lose inspiration and overcoming that....and ugh....a hundred other things....I can't express how much this movie means to me ♥️
2. Song Of the Sea (2014)
Tumblr media
This is a really sweet story about two siblings and their father, all three of whom are grappling with the mysterious death/disappearance of the mother six years ago. The story is deeply embedded in Celtic mythology, with selkies and magic and adventure thrown in, and I loved every second. The soundtrack and the songs are hauntingly beautiful, and the best part is the amazing hand drawn animation 💕 I highly recommend!!
3. Meet the Robinsons (2007)
Tumblr media
One of my childhood favourites, this film is about a young orphan boy, who's a genius inventor, but alas, none of his experiments have yet turned out successful. He dreams of competing in his school science fair and hopes that a winning place will help him get adopted with a kind family. On the day of the exhibit, he gets mysteriously visited by a boy his age, who claims to be from the future, and gets sucked into an epic adventure, with time machines, robots, and more surprises than he can handle 😂 this film is hilarious, and unexpectedly touching at places, exploring the bond that families share, be it biolocal families or found families, with the core message to always "Keep moving forward" no matter what. It's one of those seriously underrated Disney movies, which I highly recommend 😋
4. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Tumblr media
This one need no introduction. It has Dragons! Epic Fights! Badass villains! A Great Plot!! Chronically Disappointed Fathers!! Eternally Absent Mothers!! A shy nerdy boy befriending a mortal enemy!! A feisty girl who will kick your ass!! Great friendships!! Best of all : IT HAS TOOTHLESS!!!! (aka the most babiest dragon in existence!!!) Did I mention a WHOLE PET DRAGON???!!! YESSS!!! Recommend 100/100! pls excuse me, I really really like this film sksksksksjs
5. Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay listen, I first saw this film when I was 9 (my cousin made me watch it because she had it for a college assignment) and BOOM! Instant love. I read the actual novel when I was older, but I still love love love this film. I mean, who doesn't love Mr Darcy's constipated face and his constipated miniscule displays of emotion and his eternally prickly demeanor at being surrounded by the rest of the common folk??? Right???!! 😂 look at his face right there!!! It's freaking hilarious 😂
6. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Tumblr media
Another Studio Ghibli classic (who am I kidding, all their films are amazing 😔). It's about a young girl Sophie who gets turned into an 80 year old lady by the curse of the Witch of the Waste, and her adventures with wizard Howl Jenkins Pendragon. Hayao Miyazaki adapted elements from Diana Wynne Jones' novel (which was amazing too) and made it into his own story. It's a bit haphazard, a bit all over the place, but endearing and hilarious. And did I mention the gorgeous animation and intricately painted backgrounds??? All time fave 💖
7. Hugo (2011)
Tumblr media
This was another film that I liked unexpectedly. It's about an orphan boy who lives "in the walls" of a Paris railway station, and his dream is to fix his late father's automaton. One day, he meets a book lover girl, Isabelle, and her strict and grumpy godfather who runs a toy shop in the same station. Isabelle and Hugo stumble upon a mystery that seems to span over decades, linking the automaton, a single signature and a bunch of forgotten drawings at Isabelle's home.

Tagged by @studiousmedic to post my lock screen and the last song I listened to
My lock screen is a photo taken on my boyfriend’s balcony, with some of the friends, at sunset. My alarm is still from last weekend when I was on nights and had to make sure I was awake on time for my shift! I normally set my alarm for the set of shifts I’m going to be on, so I don’t have to do it every day, and inevitably forget.
Last song I played was from this playlist on Spotify called All Out 80s, as my housemates and I tried to garden and play catch! I just enjoy this playlist for some classic 80s songs. Sometimes I feel that I was born in the wrong age...
I would like to tag: @snapesfirefly and @medicslacks

@studiousmedic @biglawbear
The post itself was a bit long to reblog but... so much seconding that #lawblr and #medblr have a lot in common and should unify for Reasons.
I might be biased because I work in disability law so the medical side is also an integral part of what I do.
And I'm just remembering a time about a year and a half ago where I had to have The Conversation with someone.
She was having a certain test done the next day, and mentioned it. It's a test I am very familiar with, and is primarily used to confirm the presence of cancer and to biopsy for staging. I told her to please let me know right away if her doctor said it was cancer.
Apparently, her doctor hadn't told her that's what they were testing for.
I comforted her as best I could, and went over what her legal options would be if the test came back positive. It did.
I hope I never have to have that conversation again. I don't regret it. She later said that it helped to have some warning.
And sometimes I know it's the patient blocking it out. I've had some who only want to know their legal options for "when they recover" and I get The Look from family members. I've seen the records. I know the doctor has given the patient their prognosis.
I've also seen the miracles. Not often, but enough to know they happen.
Anyway. I'm rambling. My kids are both sick and have been up half the night needing moms. But. The post made me think about things.

Quarantine questions
Thanks @dxmedstudent for tagging me!
Are you staying home from work/school? Nope, still working as a first year doctor but on a slightly weird rota due to the circumstances. It’s basically 2 days on 2 days off.
If you’re staying home, who’s there with you? My boyfriend! I’m now very glad we decided to live together.
Do you have pets to keep you company? No, I wish I had pets but unfortunately I am renting for the foreseeable future and most landlords don’t allow pets. I would love a rabbit or a dog though. Maybe a cat.
Who do you miss the most? @joolshallie  my sister. <3 we’ve been speaking more on the phone recently, but I really want to see her. My parents too, I think it makes it worse that my family are together without me.
When was the last time you left your home? Today, to go food shopping.
What was the last thing you bought? Oooh discounting food, I recently bought new guitar strings.
Is quarantine driving you insane or are you finally relaxed? It’s weird. I definitely have a lot more free time than usual, especially when I was just a ‘reserve’ doctor the whole of last week. I’ve enjoyed spending moer time on my hobbies. But it’s frustrating not being able to do nice things and see friends, especially as the weather is beautiful.
Are you a homebody? Mostly, yeah. But I like to at least go out and do something each day.
What movies have you watched recently? What shows are you watching? My bf and I are watching You on Netflix, and also recently finished the Tiger King - who hasn’t seen that. Rewatched 28 days later because why not.
An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled? I was going to go to a wedding next week, the first wedding of my circle of friends so we were very excited for it :(
What’s the worst thing that you’ve had to cancel? I had vague birthday plans for May where I was gonna meet up with all my friends in London.
What’s the best thing you’ve had to cancel? Didn’t have to go to a mandatory training day post-nights.
Do you have any new hobbies? Not really, I’ve just spent more time on my old ones. Reading, art and playing guitar.
What are you out of? Nothing! It was hard to find pasta for a while but now we’re good.
What music are you listening to? Massively hyped on Biffy clyro atm. The lead singer Simon Neil keeps doing lil online quarantine shows which I think is awesome.
What are you reading? I’m reading ‘a good girls guide to murder’, a massive page-turner!
What are you doing for self-care? Focus on the good things in life, have nice baths, bake, write.
Are you exercising? Yep on my off days I’ve been trying to do at least one small home-exercise. Like, blogilates youtube type stuff. Or go for a long walk. At work I get enough exercise!
How’s your toilet paper supply? Good!
Have you made any changes to your hair during quarantine? No, I wish I was good/confident enough to do something to my hair but I think it’s staying as it is for now!
I tag @joolshallie @studiousmedic @make-granger-proud @left-to-say

I was tagged by @dxmedstudent on this post!
You can call me: Blue! (My online pseud here ;P)
I’d describe myself as: A curious person, inquisitive, sometimes a little weird and clumsy XD but I love to help others and hope to learn something new everyday!
Fictional character(s) that I identify with or am fond of: Mmm....too many to count actually, but I really liked Jo March from Little Women as a kid!
Three random facts about me:
1. I prefer writing on white unlined paper
2. I absolutely love watermelons. All other fruits can go home :P
3. I'm a night owl :P
Something little about my appearance that I kind of like: uh....this isn't my appearance per se.... But I kind of like how my hands are 😂 I can use them as reference when I'm drawing / painting :P
An outfit that makes me feel powerful: Honestly....I immediately thought of my white coat 🙈 but otherwise....I think it'd be something I'm comfortable in wearing....I'm not super into fashion or anything....so I can't really say what combination of outfits I'd pick XD
An object that is special to me: A pen I got from all of my mum's colleagues as a graduation gift after I finished high school. It's got a very sleek design which I immediately loved :P I still use it sparingly XD
A compliment (or two, or three) about me that made me feel warm inside: "You give good advice", usually pertaining to my friends relationship issues, which is so weird considering I have exactly zero experience in that area XD
Another is when someone compliments my handwriting!!
Also, just about any compliments regarding study / coursework stuff from my professors! :D
Something I love about myself: I like how I can look at any situation objectively. I tend to focus on individual aspects of it and assess what needs to be done. I think I work better under pressure, which isn't something to be particularly proud of, but it has helped me get out of tough spots over the years :") and also, my intuition about people in general.
Something I love about someone else: My mom, and her ability to multi-task. Also how she's resilient as hell. One day I aspire to have the kind of quiet strength she does. And also my dad, for his incredible social skills XD. Something I sorely need to cultivate lol
Something I’d love to buy for someone else: At the moment, a watch for my dad. He's been using an ancient one he got with his first salary, so he's very sentimental about it. No matter if the poor thing needs repairs like....6 times a year XD
Something I’d love to buy for myself: Hmm.... A nice new diary. My old one is almost finished, and I've always wanted to get a thick leather bound one :P
Three things that make me happy right now:
1. The current weather here. The days are the most glorious I've seen in all year....sunshiny, clear skies, neither too hot nor too cold!!
2. The freedom to do out of syllabus studying at the moment. We're on study break for almost a month before finals, so I'm getting time to explore topics that catch my fancy :")
3. Winding down with painting / sketching
Something I’m looking forward to: The next academic year. It's going to be my last, and from what I gathered, the most challenging.
Something I enjoyed recently: I went to watch the film Weathering With You in theaters! I'd been looking forward to its release for a long time!
Song(s) stuck in my head recently: "Ashes", from the soundtrack of the movie Promare.
I watched this, maybe you’d like it too: Good Omens!! Please do see it if you haven't! And any Sherlock fans here??? :D
Something adorable I came across recently: Hm....nothing in irl comes to mind recently....do cat videos on YouTube count? XD
If you wanted to know me better, you should check out these things: I really can't list things here....that'd mean talking about all of my interests XD but maybe fantasy books (I was a ginormous Potterhead back in middle school lol), art in general, and if you're an anime fan, then bingo!
Something I can/will do to take care of myself or make things more positive for me in the coming days: Stop over thinking / over analysing stuff. Reduce my social media time / time I spend on my phone in general. Stop being biased by people's opinions on a certain matter.
This was really fun to do!! I smiled a lot while writing all of this down, so thank you for tagging me again! :D
I'll tag.... @loreleys-road-to-md @do-no-harm-hopefully @themaybemd @docresa @flyonthewallmedstudent @medicinewithcoffee @ontrackmind @medmyways @med-student-97 @cancerbiophd @tetraiodothyronine @meatball-surgeon @studiousmedic @whitecoatsyndrome @doctor-not-so-strange @justinegoestomedschool @confessions-of-a-medblr @medblrforlife @wishbone-md @mistressofsurgery @wanderersofwards (sorry if any of you guys have already been tagged :") )

More of a night person naturally but in the month leading to my exam, I started sleeping at 10pm and waking up at 5am and (after getting used to it) I really enjoyed it. I felt so productive being able to get stuff done before the world was awake and felt less stressed than when I woke up at 12pm and had a list of things to accomplish.... I might try that again in September when uni starts
I hope this was interesting for you guys- I know it’s a little different to my usual posts. Once again, thank you @honeypotteachings for tagging me in this! xx
