OC Fanfiction Review Exchange 2023:

There seems to be a lack of engagement in the OC Community - so, here's an attempt to help! (This will not fix all problems, but it can do a small part for some creators)

The expectation of the exchange is that you'll pick at least 3 fics and then comment on at least 5 chapters (exception: if the fic has less than 5 chapters)

New Devices:

Aside

A short comment that sits outside of a balloon or character that is not perceived by anyone except the comment maker and the reader. An aside may come from the author, usually placed outside of the panel or near the edges. (Page with examples)

Topper

A secondary row of panels or single panel that goes 'on top' of the main comic. They are typically removable and non-essential, and usually contain the comic's title. (Page with examples)

Sub-device

Markers in Code Switch

Languages are assigned flags, pictographs or other iconographic symbols. (Page with examples)

I'm delighted over how well-received the library has been -- thank you to everyone who has shared, commented and provided feedback! I really appreciate the enthusiasm and generosity. <3 As a comics creator taking my first formal steps into the arena of comics studies, there is still a lot to do and to read for the library. Even with 63 devices catalogued, it's only still the beginning!

Updates to the Site (Nov 2023)

Added the Store page and dedicated a subsection for it on the homepage, if only to direct people to the already-existing zine that’s currently distributed by Sequential Artists Workshop and myself. I might use that page to hold things like signing up for workshops and panels if they ever happen. Added the Newsletter page so it’s easier to link to across the site and elsewhere. Opened up the page that displays all the devices on one page. Added ‘Contribution’ ‘Newsletter’ ‘All Devices’ to the sidebar. Fixed the 404 page. It suggests the Site Map for advice. Finally opened the Links page! Check out all the resources in there! Thank you to folks who have submitted feedback/contribution! I have added new example pages for Harmonious Juxtaposition/Time & Space/Pictorial Lettering/Colour Coding and a longer definition for Map Panel. Added two new devices – Aside and Topper. Added ‘Markers’ and ‘Balloon Styles’ as a subdevice to Code Switch. Finally set up the Gallery page: this is where comics pages featuring the relevant device will be catalogued. Now for the slow work of filling up the galleries…..

New in Store: The Comics Devices Quick Reference Zine Before the website launched, I produced this zine as a promotional thing + quick reference. This is a 12-page zine showcasing the devices in this library as of 2023 (not including the Topper and Aside). Perfect for students, teachers and anyone who needs a quick, in-person reference if there's no wi-fi available. Sequential Artists Workshop is selling copies for North Americans in their online store. Folks in Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia can directly contact me to get a copy. An ebook version is on the way. I will announce it via newsletter.

Anachronism- A Hat in Time Zine applications opening Nov.11th!

Hey guys! Applications are opening from November 11th to 18th! We encourage you to read the general guidelines and for writing and art pieces before applying. Guidelines will be reposted on the actual application post as well. Feel feel to message mods ( @subterra-rose @majormeilani ) or send an ask to this blog if there is any confusion.

General:

This zine is all ages! As a result, please refrain from creating any content that wouldn’t be present in the game. There’s no theme planned, but if you want to find a way to incorporate the title into your piece, props to you!

All communication will be done through Discord due to the nature of this project. Mods will message you within a few days once applications have closed with the link to join.

Please submit the finished piece with the account(s) you want to be credited under and an icon to represent you.

We want all characters to be represented! When applying, please submit a few characters you are interested in in the format of first choice, second choice, etc. Mods will contact you in the event that there are too many people requesting the same character. Cut characters are fine as choices as well! Group pieces are exempt from this.

OCs are fine to include in your piece, but please keep the AHIT characters as the main focus of the piece.

Totally optional, but feel free to submit a small blurb about your piece (2-4 sentences)! This will be attached to the piece at the bottom with your icon.

There will be three check-ins, including the submission date. The estimated timeline for them will be a few days during the weeks of Dec. 17th, Jan. 8th, and Jan. 21st. The zine completion date with all pieces submitted, edited, and published is the first week of February. Final dates will be posted in the discord once everyone has applied and we know the general number of people participating. Mods will give ample notice if this publishing deadline moves. Due to this, if you miss two check-ins without notifying mods, you will not be able to participate and will be dropped.

Artists (illustrations/comics):

Pieces should meet the minimum dimensions of 2500px/8.5in by 3300px/11in (letter size paper!) Ideally, send as a .png or .tiff

Pieces must be finished and fully coloured with the exception of comics after the first page. Comics must have the first page coloured but can have subsequent pages be monochrome. This means that unless the piece requires large amounts of white space, the background should not be left blank.

Please keep in mind that pieces that do not fit the dimensions will have to be rescaled and mods cannot ensure image quality will be the same.

Please sign somewhere on the piece! I want the art to be credited correctly. If you don’t, I’ll add a small watermark with the account you want to be credited.

Writers:

Each piece of allotted a space of 5 pages or 2500 words. If you feel as though what you want to write would go over this amount, contact one of the mods and we can discuss it.

All forms of writing are allowed. However, if the piece needs to be formatted a certain way, please send it as a PDF so I can ensure the format is correct. Otherwise, please send as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf

OTW Board Meeting Nov 12(ish)!

The next public OTW Board meeting will be held on November 12 at 1:00-2:00 AM UTC. For some of us that's actually November 11, so be sure to check when that is for you.

Meetings are held in the OTW Discord server and last an hour. If you've attended OTW Board meetings in the past, this one will be a little different. The Board will address the agenda first, and once that business is concluded they will take at least ten questions. 

Questions should be asked in the #open-chat channel where they will be collected by moderators and added to the ⁠#questions-voting channel. There, they will be upvoted by meeting attendees and then asked in order of descending emoji count. The Board requests that questions be reasonable and polite, under 50 words, and that each person only submits one. Questions that require Board members to read and respond to any linked posts will not be accepted.

Unanswered questions will be combined and posted as weekly Q&A threads in the ⁠#questions-answers channel, starting two weeks after the most recent public meeting. This means if your question isn't covered in the meeting, there's still a chance it'll be answered later.

Also new is a set of Community Guidelines, which can be found in the #rules channel. We encourage you read them to familiarize yourself with the details. As this process is new for the Board, too, these rules may continue to be refined in the lead-up to the meeting and so the information shared in this post may not be in its final form.

A List of my Favourite 'Gothic' Media

My preference to gothic aesthetic is mostly victorian goth. Hence, this is what the list will consist of with some outliers. This is not a list of every good gothic media out there, it’s just the ones I have consumed and truly make me feel like I’ve transported into that world.

This list is very selective and subjective. It doesn't always follow the textbook or culturally accepted meaning of 'goth'. It is mostly about the vibe, aesthetic, feelings and motifs that are associated with a beautiful, melancholic and mystical story.

I’m very excited to see the fics and art you have been enjoying this year. Like last year, I’ll be running Jily Awards on Airtable.

Timeline: 

Nominations: Nov 1 through Nov 21

Nominations will be released beginning on Nov 14, and on a rolling basis after that.

Week 1 voting: Dec 1-7

Week 2 voting: Dec 10-17

Finalists and the final round of voting will be announced after Round 2 is completed. 

Rules: 

All works must have been posted in some amount between November 1, 2022 and November 1, 2023. This can be a chapter or an entire fic. Each category has specific requirements, so keep an eye out for those posts to come!

All votes must be confirmed by Tumblr message in order to be counted. This means you must have a Tumblr in order to vote. Votes were lost last year because people failed to confirm votes. Please check the Week 1 Voting post for more info when it is released. 

Any opt outs from last year do not carry over. If you would like to exclude your works from consideration for Jily Awards 2023, you must send me a message. You will receive a response to confirm you were removed. You must opt out before the Nominations are released, or you will not be permitted to exclude yourself. 

At this time, there are no limitations on the type or trope of fic that can be submitted. If you have concerns about this, please send me a message so that we can discuss your concerns further. Asks will not be responded to on this subject.
