Ever find a larger bill in the laundry that you thought you lost or spent? I feel like that. The tiny little slash fic website from the early 00s that I read "If you are prepared" on is long gone, all links broken, but I found it over on Walking the Plank, which is somehow still operational. I found it and I'm about to completely ruin my emotional state for the next several days by re-reading it.

If You are Prepared

I sure hope this is the dark, intense journey through deep lore pre-OotP Harry Potter that I think it is. I so hope this is the fic I think it is. I reposted a work of mine on AO3 and spotted a reference to the online slash fic magazine Swish and Flick while I was cutting and pasting the old rtf into chapters. That got me to googling around looking to see if there was any trace of it left after 22 or so years. Found a screencap with some links to different stories and... I know this title. It lept out at me, through a screencap taken of a half-busted wayback machine archived webpage from 2003-2004. It jogged memories two decades old.

Go ahead. I dare you to read it. First chapter is Snape's POV:

At the first sight of the Muggle neighbourhood I’m reminded of one of the reasons I became a Death Eater so long ago. I feel nauseous and I can scarcely resist taking out my wand and casting a growth spell on their perfectly cut grass. I hurry up the stone walk way, amusing myself in imagining the look on the Muggles’ faces were they ever to see my garden. I knock three times on the oak door.

Ch. 27 Beneath The Surface "The Last Light of Summer"

The last days of August before the school year starts at Hogwarts. Harry and Severus discuss lingering feelings and clear misassumptions!

“Severus… look at me. Look,” Harry whispered in a soft, caring voice.

He tugged at his hand, insistent. When Severus finally locked eyes with him, a chill ran through Harry’s back, followed by a shudder and a warm tug coming from their connected hands.

His eyes were glistening, still hard but beneath that, there was a fear and need that warmed the deepest part of Harry’s soul. He squeezed Severus’s hand firmly, anchoring them both in the moment.

“Listen,” he began, his voice steady but thick with emotion. “I know this year is going to be busy and we’ll both have responsibilities pulling us in every direction. But don’t believe, for one second, that we won’t make time for us.”

Severus’s brow furrowed slightly, his eyes narrowing as if bracing for a contradiction.

“You can’t promise that, Harry,” he whispered, and his eyes were distant, dull.

“I can and I am. You’re not just someone I talk to when things are quiet and easy.” He leaned in, their faces mere inches apart. “You’re part of my life, Severus. No amount of homework, Quidditch practice, or whatever else can change that.”

Severus’s lips parted slightly, a question forming, and Harry nodded his head, willing him to say what was on his mind.

“And your… friends? Weasley didn’t take it too kindly, and it’s doubtful he will have changed his mind over the summer…”

“I’ve given time to my friends to accept that you’re part of my life now. If they don’t get it, that’s on them—not on us,” Harry said, shrugging.

He then leaned forward and nuzzled Severus’s nose with his.

“Remember after Diagon Alley? What we discussed?” Severus nodded, once, his eyes glistening, “what we have is real, Severus. This is important. You are important. Remember that, okay?”

Severus seemed to take a moment, his breathing audible in the almost silent living room. Harry saw the subtle tremor in his hands, the weight of everything that he wasn’t saying firmly on his shoulders.

Finally, all the tension Severus had been holding left him and his shoulders sagged, as he almost fell against him.

A sudden surge of need and desire washed over Harry, and he opened his arms just as Severus let his body sag against him, leaning into him. Severus’s hands tugged at his shirt, pulling him close, wanting to feel the warmth of his body. Harry wrapped his arms around him, letting him bury his face against his neck, feeling him breathing hard.

“You are enough for me, Severus,” he whispered, and he heard his voice thick with all the emotions he was feeling, “nobody understands me as well as you do. Never doubt that…”

Severus, now unable to hold back, let out a small whimper as pressed his head against him, clinging to him.

“Perhaps that is what it was then,” Pansy drawled. “I remember, when we first met him at the Ministry, we had been informed that Harry was one of the most handsome wizards and we were quite surprised to find that he wasn’t actually that special. Perhaps it is due to growing up around people like Draco and Blaise but I remember thinking that he looked quite average. There was no strength in his jaw and his face lacked symmetry, made more evident thanks to that scar of his. You thought so as well, at the time, Severus. I remember, quite distinctly, after that ball, you saying: ‘Mr Potter handsome! I would sooner call his adopted mother witty’. After that, though, he seemed to somehow improve in your opinion and I believe, at one point, you thought him quite attractive.”

“Yes,” Severus said, tersely, unable to hold back any longer. “That was only when I had first met him, however. It has been some months, however, since I have considered him one of the most handsome men in my acquaintance.”

With that he left the room and poor Pansy was left with the bitter satisfaction of forcing Severus to confess something that caused no one any pain but herself.

Sometimes! Collateral Damage got some hate for a certain twist 👀 Most of my dead doves get weird comments, because I don't pull my punches. The odd weird or rude comment scattered elsewhere. I try to handle it with grace, but honestly I'm a big ole sensitive baby so...🥲

idk 🥲 umm...I write emotions pretty well I think. I write angst pretty well especially. I really care about the characters and portraying them as honestly as I can, and as real as I can, accepting all of their humanity, good and bad.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Hmm. I don't think I could write fluff to save my life...I've made some attempts but 😂 I struggle a lot with my work for various reasons, none of them easy to put a name to. I do have a hard time balancing the idea of...wanting to leave a lot to implication, but trying not to be so subtle people don't actually have a hope of catching on at all. (Thank god for beta readers.)

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I like it, but I worry about Google Translate failing me 😭

For sure it's Contempt, and its counterpart Devotion. Truly the story of my soul. All of my feelings about Snarry poured into it. 20+ years of passion and devotion to this pairing! I'm not sure I could love anything more or be prouder of anything more. (Though I do think The Curse of Anteros is my best work, but Contempt/Devotion will always have my heart!)

i just wanted to ask if you could summarize the sole snarry fic you recommended (desiderium intimum) in a more detailed way? Im pretty intrigued as to why it's stuck with you for so long and how much cruelty snape had to have exhibited for you to react so strongly, but i dont have enough patience or attention span or mental fortitude to read through 200k+ words of pure angst lol (and thats not even counting the untranslated parts!). I started with the first 4 chapters and it already presents such an unfair and humiliating concept, which just further peaks my interest.

Hi! Thank you! And sure, but my answer will have some general spoilers)

Desiderium Intimum is definitely a type of story that many people won't like: the power imbalance seems severe, Harry acts like a stereotypical love-sick fool at first, and there is a lot of sex (something I tend to dislike). But all of this has textual explanation, and with time, everything develops in a subtle but beautiful, powerful way.

At the start of the story, Harry is emotionally under the effect of the potion. It's not that it controls him physically, but he still remembers what he's experienced vividly and it confuses and weakens him. His attraction to Snape and the memories of what he felt are stronger than his common sense. Snape, in turn, has no interest in him. He uses this situation to his advantage: he plans to kill Harry and Voldemort at once, and for this, he needs to keep Harry hooked.

Gradually and tentatively, Snape's feelings change, just as Harry's attitude. The progression of their relationship is fascinating to me: Harry is slowly teaching Snape to display tenderness and affection. Trust and attachment develop between them. Snape eventually grows to be as obsessed with Harry as Harry was with him at the start of the story; Harry, in turn, gets more mature. He starts standing up for himself, he fights back. Their romance is full of violence, jealousy (possessive Snape is terrifying in this), yearning and need. It's mesmerizing.

This story has a very long chapter written from Snape's POV - I actually think it had a big impact on my own preference toward including dual POVs in my fics. I waited for this chapter for months and it impressed me so much, my heart still skips a beat when I think of it. I loved seeing Snape turn from a cold, detached, cruel character indifferent to Harry to someone utterly obsessed, fiercely protective, and hopelessly in love.

I also love how war is displayed in Desiderium Intimum. It's chilling, doubly so when you see what terrible things Snape readily does to keep Harry alive.

I read this story via Google translator and I never stopped being in love with it. These are my impressions only, though. I know that some people didn't warm up to it anyway; many considered Harry too weak until the end, but this wasn't my opinion. He certainly starts out like this, but he grows a lot. He's like water: soft, calming, gentle, but with such inner strength than he has the power to shape and twist the hardest rocks. I love him.

I don't know if this is weird but I saw your claims on the rarepair fest for draco/remus and first hi I've recently discovered I love that pair and second "Draco secretly pining since third year and wanting a chance to woo Remus. Sugar Daddy!Draco could be funny, especially if it's subtle and Remus doesn't realize it until someone else points it out." - I love it

Hello! First of all, sorry for taking a few days to answer this, I've been busy helping out with some stuff for a wedding that's in a couple days (+ hyperfixating on the sims).

Second, I have no idea if this is weird either but I'm not weirded out, so 🤷 I was actually very excited to see your ask because Remus/Draco has been a guilty pleasure of mine for the last couple of months and I love to see other people on board with it, haha.

Third, thank you! Sugar Daddy!Draco/Oblivious!Remus is something I want SOOO bad and I'm happy to hear others like it too. Fingers crossed someone gets inspired and decides to write it. pak haeyoung and an chisoo in 'signal' give me that very, well, subtle, thin vibe of snarry. like it's barely there but i recognize and read it off their dynamics like that. and i'm there not for the main lead guy to change his future in the past (like i expect that to happen i don't know how, so i don't worry; or even if doesn't happen, it's not in vain); but i want this 'snape' to do something good. in the end. those half-closed eyes and the perfect hair to blame.

also i want sangcheol and jeongwoo like that below. where sangcheol was having his birthday party, small and in a bar, but didn't want to distract jeongwoo from his intense exam studies. but some detective bird mentioned it (intentionally) to jeongwoo. so he came. flied. wanted to chirp all his praises to sangcheol, even had a drink, and alcohol with hard studying got him out quickly.

The Coda has a lot of hopeful vibes but without losing the trauma/baggage in Soft Touch. Also Harry signing up for a new job to decode Snape's facial punctuation.

Snape paused just over the threshold, the dim hall painting him in stark contrasts. He flattened a hand against the wall to support himself, turning just enough to send Harry an inscrutable look over the tops of his dark glasses. Before he allowed the attendant to steer him onward, a shadow like an apostrophe lifted one corner of his lips, a tiny muscular possessive that might mean smirk or smile. But Harry, who was determined now to figure out Snape's private language of bottomless stares and carefully sculpted twitches, decided to take it as a sign of forgiveness and a symbol of promise. He wasn't a subtle bloke himself, but he looked forward to making a hobby out of decoding the facial punctuation and abbreviated reflexes that was all Snape had left.

'Tis the end of the Battle of Hogwarts. Voldemort had fallen, Minerva rescued Severus, and Harry shunned the Deathly Hallows. The following years were spent rebuilding the wizarding world and navigating new relationships.

One day, during yet another fundraising effort for funds to rebuild Hogwarts, Harry caught Severus unaware in a corridor. After awkward greetings, they spoke of their pained history — of Severus's role in the war, of Harry's role in the war, and of how they wished their roles weren't branded to their person. The public only see them as saviours and their past heroic deeds, refusing to let them move onwards with their life — to make mistakes and fumble and figure out their place in the new world order.

This meeting led to another meeting and yet another meeting every time the Ministry or the Board of Governors held events and demanded them both to attend.

Finally, one holiday event six years after the war, Harry asked Severus to meet him at a Muggle coffee shop. Severus agreed. He had gained a fondness for the man — an absurd emotion he couldn't help but explore.

The coffee date led to another and then another. Soon, they were grabbing meals and drinks all over Muggle London: the Indian place that served outrageously spicy curry, the pub that had a Wednesday fish and chips special, the Italian place with the rich, creamy carbonara.

Their friends could see what they couldn't see. They were fond of each other. Minerva ran bets on when Severus would make his move. Hermione dropped not-so-subtle hints about Harry and his love life. George straight up said to them both when they visited his shop to grab each other and fuck right then and there. He would sell tickets.

Severus and Harry weren't blind. They knew the other had feelings — the lingering touches, the stolen glances, the flushed cheeks.

The war had them rush through their life — to get one step ahead of Voldemort, to learn new defensive spells, to battle for one's life.

They wanted to savour their time and learn from one another: the other man's ticks, his ingrained habits, his tea preference. ("Microwave! You're a wizard!!!! You don't have to use an electric kettle, but a spell is better than a microwave!")

Then one day, fifteen years after the war, Teddy couldn't wait any longer.

"I lost my mum and dad in the war. Life is short. Like hell I'll wait another fifteen years for you two arseholes to fuck."

Harry, after getting over the shock of his godson cursing, agreed.

"We're going to fuck?" asked Severus, his eyebrows raised and his tone light.

"No," said Harry. His smile was wide and infectious. "We're going to get married."

Luna collected her winnings. "It's obvious," said Luna as she counted her Galleons, a tad exasperated with her friends. They should know better by now. "The Nargles see all."

Severus and Harry spent their married life away from the public. After two decades, the war was hardly present in the public's mind. Its impacts were not so ever present. There was no need for the constant fundraising events.

But, every anniversary, without fail, they would make their trek to Hogwarts. They would spend the morning walking the grounds. They would pay their respects to Albus, and when they finally make their way to the memorial, they would count themselves lucky — that they survived, that they were given a second chance, and that they found each other.

Oh geez. I know I’m very behind, but late is better than never. So, I’m wishing @danni-the-puff a very happy belated birthday (almost a month later, whoops)! Rather than gifting art (since RL is cray and there’s not enough time in the day), I thought I’d do something different by combining hand-lettering, paper stars and fic recs to celebrate how amazing Danni is! Danni is a caring human and a friend who has such a bright and bubbly personality. She’s also so supportive and enthusiastic about people’s creations and she has such a way to lift people up. I first started to get to know Danni through a couple of rare pair servers (and then through Wizarding Creators Den and CoMs). I especially love seeing her Tumblr posts about writing, meta and more. She just knows her stuff, and she has such interesting insights to share about a lot of different topics. If anyone has read Danni’s fics, you’ll know she’s a long-time lover of Snarry (and rare pairs). Her writing blows me away, whether it’s fluffy, sexy, angsty, rough, or out of this world. Danni knows exactly how string words together so  they flow so smoothly and poetically, with intention and a punch. That’s such a hard thing to do, but she has that gift! While there are some tropes and things I don’t usually read, Danni’s work somehow beckons me to take the chance and discover something new (well worth it too!). Her passion for Snarry is truly amazing, and I’m reminded why a good chunk of my fandom friends are Snarry fans. Maybe we all just know how to get along; I have no idea, but I’m totally for it, especially when it comes to bonding over and delving back into old-school fandom vibes (if you had a LJ during the early 2000s, you know exactly what I’m talking about). Some of my favourite Danni fics are: >> Obscene (Snarry, E, 1.9k): Summary: Never has Severus been so wet outside of heat. It’s humiliating; obscene. A/B/O is not something I generally read, but this? Is smokin’ hot. If you want some push and pull energy, desperation and delicious smut, go read this ASAP! >> Orange Blossoms (Snarry, T, 3.5k): Summary: These are foolish times to have hope, and more foolish still to be in love. The way Danni uses flowers in this is so beautiful. So many subtle messages and secrets woven in and passed along, and it really does make this such a sweet story. Harry, of course, is very insistent, and he’s such a Gryffindor. >> Lover Boy at Play (Snarry, E, 4.5k, mind the tags): Summary: These are foolish times to have hope, and more foolish still to be in love. Okay, if you want a classic teacher/student fic, go read this one. It has so much packed in when it comes to feelings and sex and trying to figure a lot of things out. From bitterness to jealousy to want and tenderness, Severus definitely does through all of these emotions. Harry is Harry with his cheekiness and determination, but he’s also a real person who is open to learning (and pleasing and wanting). And when these two come together (heh), it’s turns out to be something really gorgeous. >> The Green Dress (Jegulus, E, 1.8k): Summary: Christmas is no time for sulking over lost love. Not when there is new love in a pretty green dress. The angst and cross-dressing was all I needed to go read this one. It’s sweet, sensual and sexy. And if you want something to pull your heart and break it a little, this will do it. >> A Little Taste of Wasting Time (M, Fleur/Hermione, 1.5k): Summary: “One cannot learn all from books, ‘ermione.”. I am pretty sure this was one of the first rare pair fics I’ve read of Danni’s, and I love how it’s suggestive, but there’s absolutely no sex. All the flirting and innuendo are in the dialogue, small actions and glances, and that’s enough to leave things to the imagination and make this super hot. >> ALSO: I am currently reading, Contempt (E, 20.5k, mind the tags), which was written for Snarry-a-Thon: Summary: Harry hates Snape, and he always will. (He will, won’t he?) I won’t say too much (yet), but if you’re looking for a post-war, complex love/hate fic that also has wanting, obsession (from both sides) and a lot of messy situations and feelings, give this one a read too. oh hello! Thanks for the ask!

55.) Have you noticed any patterns in your fics?  Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

This one is interesting. As in: probably there are patterns, as I'm a very self-indulgent person, so why wouldn't I play with what I love and enjoy over and over again? But also they're so ingrained in me, they might not be obvious to me; or they might not stick out to anyone but me.

Part of the problem is also that I often prefer to be quite subtle with some things (and as I've learned lately, probably too subtle sometimes 🤣), which means a lot of words are thrown at the wall but they don't all make the final cut. And I don't often reread my own works due to the cringe, so....idk all this to say "probably more than anyone will ever know about" 😂

I don't know if this really counts as a pattern, but I do like to focus a lot on the physical. Part of it is that idea of "showing rather than telling" and more focus on the physical sensation of an emotion, and the action/reaction to it. But there's also the indulgent side of it when it comes to appearance, which can lean either quite lush or quite harsh. Both of which I find indulgent!

Let me wax poetic about how ugly Snape is, please. Then on the flip side get me into his POV very bitterly worshipping at Harry's altar. And I'm forever a sucker for poetic eye descriptors, so there's plenty of me having all of the fun describing Harry's eyes. Emerald green, leaf green, absinthe green, arsenic green....I even compared them to snake scales once! 😄 And Severus is such a dark romantic, I fully lean into all the overblown poetry in his perspective. 0 cares, let me live my life, I'm writing this for me and me alone.

I also just feel super strongly about....not everyone has to be a model. In some POVs I can't go as hard as I want, but when I can....I do! Let my man Severus have his greasy hair and his crooked teeth. What's wrong with that?? He is the sexiest ugly man who's ever walked the earth. Let people have wrinkles or stretch marks or belly rolls!! My preoccupation with Snarry keeps me from exploring more of that in the way I want, but I swear most of my will to write other ships and characters is finding new imperfections to play with and love on. Be they physical or otherwise.

Extremity and chaos are big driving forces for me. Since I am a lady of extreme emotions and also chaos. 😂 Everything is big and wild and messy and scary and I like to portray that. I can appreciate people who like to focus more on the mundane or simple parts of life, but I'm here to talk about love that is like a hurricane, like a wildfire, like tornado. Love that is big and powerful and turns your life upside down and absolutely wrecks you. And the more complex matter of holding very different feelings or ideas at the same time.

This love is wonderful and terrible. Severus is ugly and sexy. This is my heart's desire, and also my greatest fear. I'm excited and terrified. I'm overjoyed and enraged. Also: confusion and/or misunderstandings. Harry who thinks he knows Severus' motivations, but he doesn't. And at the same time, Harry who has no idea what he thinks or feels at all, because everything he's dealing with is "too much" to even begin to comprehend it. So...big and messy is the ongoing theme.

Also: overuse/misuse of punctuation 😂 It's all quite intentional. I'm very meticulous about word choice and punctuation choice. And it's all on the vibe 100%. Some things are less about correctness and more about the feeling and the flow, because there is no room for logic when I'm trying to infect people with Emotions. All that to say I sometimes make questionable decisions but they're almost always on purpose! 😅

Virginity loss is also a big theme. I love it. I play with it a lot. It ties a lot onto existing preoccupations of mine such as "extremity" and "messiness" but also a level of "possessiveness" (that might give people the ick but oh well.) Then also, on a more personal level, me playing with and exploring my own feelings about not only the resurgence of purity culture in general, but the treatment of sex and shame specifically where I was born and raised. It's just one concept that hits so many very specific happy points for me while also doing some very real work in me, so I don't imagine that one will stop cropping up anytime soon!

Anyway....I feel like this is a jumbled mess and I answered it very badly but at least I tried! 😅 I'd be curious if any readers noticed any patterns whether I listed them or not 🤔

RAM MY BELOVED hello hi happy Valentines (if you celebrate) hi

I just drove home while listening to my tomarry playlist and i need to tell you, i love themb so much and this song (Carnivore by Bear Attack! If the link doesnt work) is such a themb song and omg. I need to go reread love is touching souls. I need to finish typesetting it. I need to stop procrastinating buying printing materials and just bind it into a physical book. Themb.

But also, i was thinking about this fic thats currently sitting partially done in my google docs, thats endgame tomarry but currently drarry. And basic context: Harry becomes the DADA prof after a few years of being a failure of an auror and he and Ginny just finalized their divorce (nothing was Wrong Per Se, Ginny just realised shes a lesbian), and Hermione sets him up with Draco but theyre not really Great together theyre more just meh as a couple, but then Harry accidentally time travels back to 1945 (give ir take a few years) and teaches DADA during Tom's seventh year, and they get together and Harry knits Tom a Weasley sweater and etc etc etc BUT i couldnt figure out how to get them both back to The Present Day while not breaking up Harry and Draco BUT BUT BUT i realized i can just make it hella poly and itd still be cute!

Im telling you all of this as the person who got me into tomarry plus the first person i thought of when i put this playlist on, i hope this hinged-ness finds you well i love you <3

Love the idea of introducing someone else to the Tomarry relationship because we've all seen Tom and how he feels about sharing. Like I feel like any work with Tomarry + another character is like, 40% getting Tomarry together (all the Hurdles and Problems and such with those two) and then 60% Harry slowly making Tom stop hissing at whoever else because he has to share Harry with them and that's his soulmate. Yes even if he likes them too he's just Like That. He's so very not suited to polyamory, it would be extremely entertaining reading a fic trying to make it work.

I remember reading a fic back in Ye Olden Days that was a Drarry snippet with Severus looking in from the outside wishing he could be with Harry but Knowing Deep in his Soul that he was Wrong for him. I'd link it but I'm like 90% sure it was in french and I don't want to go looking through FFnet for it right now haha. Drarry just made me think of it. Oh and there was One good Drarry fic I loved, still in french, by and author who wrote banger after banger (all in french, yeah) on FFnet that introduced baby me to Supermassive Black Hole and the fact that you don't put two condoms on. It's Nothing Else Matters by Rose Malefoy if you want to look at the page and not understand the text haha (yes Malefoy with an e that's how it's spelt in french) Oh and my first Snarry was amnesiac Harry who was with Severus and forgets it so he gets into a relationship with Draco but then remembers and leaves him I think? It's been a while. I used to be into Drarry more but it's been years since I read some, since I discovered Snarry and all.

I think we should combine our poly Tomarry AUs to inflict the maximum amount of Situations on theses guys. Like throw in Draco throw in Severus and then let them take years and a lot of therapy to disentangle that mess and make a working polycule out of it. A bit like when you plop Sims in a house with full autonomy and wait for them to do something cool like starving themselves or making out with their brother's wife, except here I hope they'd figure it out and get a good ending at some point. Anyway.

Oh and in Tomarry news if you haven't tackled Draw me after you (let us run) by Toastranger you should go for it because now after about 200k words and 44 chapters Things have been Happening 👀 (I'm not subtle, they finally kissed is what happened) extremely fun fic, highly recommend once again. That said it is a time investment because I love long works

Your song rec is actually making me realise I don't have Tomarry songs? I have Obikin songs I have plenty of Snarry songs I have Johnlock songs and Kylux songs but nothing for these two. Ah well. I mean I guess The bog in the valley by the Irish Rovers is kind of a Harrymort song because it's a part of Dark Livestream but that's not very Tomarry specific. OH WAIT NO I do!! In the Daylight Again by Duplicity is named after a line from Salt and the Sea by the Lumineers so. One (1) Tomarry song. Good fic too, I can't make myself rereading it because it hurts my feelings :(( but it's really good
