Welcome to the final instalment of my series where I discuss the origins of every fish Pokemon. Today I’ll be covering gen IX. For previous generations see here: gens I-II, gens III-IV, gens V-VI, and gens VII-VIII.
People criticize Paldea for having too many birds and dogs, but I haven’t seen people talking about how many fish it has. I bring this up because Paldea has a lot of new fish. Only Hoenn introduced more fish lines. The first Paldean fish is the Wiglett line, which is also the only new multi-stage line. In this case, the species name helpfully tells us what it’s based on: garden eels. These eels are famous for poking their heads out of the sediment while keeping most of their bodies in an underground burrow. Because they typically live in large colonies and look a bit like grass, a group of eels can look a lot like a patch of plants, hence the name. Garden eels are very shy and will retract into their burrows at any sign of danger. This behavior is shared with Wiglett, which will retract if it sees the player coming, forcing you to sneak attack it to battle.
Tumblr media
(image: garden eels looking adorable)
Wugtrio follows the garden eel origin, but also incorporates some moray eel inspiration. Both Morays and Wugtrio lurk in holes in rocks and grab passing prey, dragging them in. The fact that both Pokémon are slimy enough to get the Gooey ability is likely a reference to hagfish. These jawless fish are famous for their defense tactic where they secrete large amounts of slime when threatened.
Tumblr media
(image: somebody playing with hagfish slime)
Finally, Wugtrio’s red coloration may draw from the giant tube worms found around hydrothermal vents.
Tumblr media
(image: giant tube chilling on a hydrothermal vent. Except not chilling because it's really hot there)
As one of the two convergent pokemon lines, the Wiglett line is an example of convergent evolution. This is when distinct groups of organisms evolve similar adaptations in response to similar selective pressures. A classic example of this is the flap of skin used for gliding known as a patagium that has evolved independently in flying squirrels (rodents), gliding possums (marsupials) and colugos (primate relatives). All three groups evolved the patagium to beter move between trees in their arboreal environments. In the case of Wiglett’s similarity to Diglett, the dex entries and official website helpfully tell us that the two species evolves similar body plans because they are both dedicated burrowers.
Tumblr media
(image: a diagram showing an example of convergent evolution in sugar gliders and flying squirrels)
Veluza is based on hakes, specifically merluccid hakes. These are predatory fish in the same family as cod and haddock who are known for being indiscriminate predators of smaller fish. Fittingly, Veluza is pretty aggressive, chasing down the player whenever they get near one. Hake are pretty economically important in Spain, Paldea’s main real-world basis. The Spanish love their hake. Not only do more than half the hake sales in Europe go to Spain, Spain is also the world’s largest consumer of the fish.
Tumblr media
(image, a silver hake)
Veluza having a prominent dorsal fin and what seems to be an anal fin followed by smaller triangular finlets reminds me pretty heavily of tuna, who are also very fast predators.
Tumblr media
(image: a tuna's tail, showing the finlets)
Veluza also almost looks kind of mechanical, which makes me wonder if there’s some inspiration coming from torpedoes or submarines. Veluza’s habit of removing parts of its own flesh is an example of autotomy. This is when an animal will remove parts of its own body and is the basis for the pokemon move autotomize (which Veluza doesn’t get for whatever reason). Autotomy is mostly used for defense while Veluza uses it to increase its speed and offenses. In my very quick search I was unable to find any examples of fish that use autotomy, but the fact that the move that represents this in Veluza is called Fillet Away and the dex mentions how the shed flesh tastes, it’s pretty clearly another reference to how much the Spanish eat hake. In this case, it’s a fish that fillets itself for you.
I’m going to talk about Dondozo and Tatsugiri together as while they’re different lines, they’re linked to each other. Dondozo is a giant catfish, specifically a wels catfish, the largest freshwater fish in Europe. While not native to the Iberian peninsula, the species has been introduced there. Dondozo’s diet including bird Pokémon is a reference to how wels catfish will beach themselves to try to catch and eat birds.
Tumblr media
(image: an absolute unit wels catfish with human for scale)
Something I can’t understate is that Dondozo is big. At a height (presumable length in this case) of 39’04”, Dondozo is the second largest non-legendary in the franchise and 3rd largest overall after Eternatus and Wailord. That’s whale shark sizes and dwarfs the beluga sturgeon. The largest freshwater fish in the world. The two largest non-legendary Pokémon being aquatic is true to real life, where animals in the water can get much bigger than animals on land. Nothing as big as a blue whale can exist on land because without the support that water gives, the animal’s own weight would crush it. This is why beaching is usually a death sentence for large whales. Of course it would be remiss of me to not mention that both Tatsugiri and Dondozo have a sushi theme. Dondozo is based on a sushi chef. It’s head frills look like the traditional sushi chef headband and its tongue looks like a sushi geta, the wooden bench sushi is commonly served on. The sushi theme is more prevalent with Tatsugiri, which looks like a piece of hand-shaped sushi.
Tumblr media
(image: sushi nigiri)
The different forms and colors of Tatsugiri make different individuals look like different dishes. The different colors may reference koi, which could also explain its dragon typing. Koi, and carp in general, are often associated with dragons. Tatsugiri can use its fins like limbs and survive out of water, possibly referencing fish like lungfish and mudskippers, who can live out of the water. Dondozo and Tatsugiri have a mutualistic relationship, a type of symbiosis where both parties benefit. Tatsugiri is the brains to Dondozo’s brawn, giving instructions to the larger fish and acting as bait to lure in prey. This is a form of aggressive mimicry. Tatsugiri is stated to dwell in Dondozo’s mouth. This could reference two things. The first is mouth brooding, where a parent fish will keep its offspring inside its mouth to protect them. The second is cleaner fish, who can safely go into the mouth of larger predatory fish because of a mutualistic relationship with them.
Tumblr media
(image: a mouth-brooding fish)
The final fish Pokémon so far and the only legendary fish is Chi-Yu. This adorable little malevolent monstrosity is based on a goldfish, or rather fire in the shape of a goldfish. Like the other Treasures of Ruin, its true body is the actual treasure, magatama beads in this case, while the rest of the body is gathered from the environment to support the treasure. Chi-Yu being born from envy and the jade beads being in place of the eyes makes it a very literal green-eyed monster. Chi-Yu and the Treasures of Ruin in general are based on the Four Perils, malevolent beings from Chinese mythology. The Treasures don’t map exactly to the Perils and the connection is stronger in some than others. For example, Ting-Lu is based on the Taotie, which is usually depicted on cauldrons, and it has a massive cauldron on its head. Chi-Yu is probably based on the Hundun, a faceless creature with 6 legs. Chi-Yu doesn’t have a proper face, just beads where eyes should be, and it has 6 fins on each side of its body. The Hundun also has wings and fins are kind of like wings I guess? Not related to Pokémon, but the Hundun appears in the Iron Widow, which is a book you absolutely should read.
Tumblr media
(image: a depiction of a Hundun)
And with that, this series comes to a close, at least until we get Gen X. I may do something similar with other Pokémon based on aquatic creatures, but I haven’t decided yet. I may also discuss some of my own fakemon if anyone is interested.

PLEASE SHARE AND HELP MY REACH
Squeak Speak
May Newsletter
Happy May, Friends!
This is a little later than I planned because I wanted to update everyone on my medical situation. I will be having surgery mid June and my infusion treatments go through July so hopefully by August I will be feeling much better and back on track. I know some of you have requested pictures. Please bare with me and don't be afraid to send me reminders if you don't hear from me for several days. I am doing the best I can.
What's going on with the kids.
For the most part, they are doing well. Evee is starting antibiotics for her eye infection. The brain tumor is too deep to operate. We are treating her with medication but she got it irritated and an infection followed so we are taking care of that. She takes her medicine with no problem. She is the sweetest and best little ferret. Please keep her in your prayers.
I lost three more ferrets to old age and my heart is broken. One was Justin's favorite boy, Dorbad. I'm taking this harder than I thought I would because of that. Mr. Spooky says he is going to live forever and take care of me. He's a good boy when he's not trying to bite our friends and visitors. Lol
Maru, the hamster, Cal, the sugar glider, and our bunnies, Daisy and Basil continue to thrive. We have all suddenly decided that we love celery and snow peas and hate raisins. So I am changing up their daily salads.
We are still struggling and I am not sure how long we can continue like this. This is my calling and I will keep doing it as long as God keeps making a way for me to do it but it is getting harder. I keep requesting grants but none are coming through and donations are hard to come by. Except for a couple of amazing angels that commit to sending in funds regularly, we have nothing else coming in. I picked up some part time contract work but it barely covers the bills. I'm grateful for it but we really need more support.
That being said our fundraising goal this month is $1,094.90
It will go towards:
$488 to pet foods
$260 for their produce
$138.46 for medicine
$208.44 for cleaning supplies for the month.
We also need immediately:
Food bowls
Carabiners
Pee pads
Here is our wish list links if you are able to help with those items:

Also we have a friend (Thanks Shannon!) of the rescue who is selling freshies air fresheners that are super cute. When she gets the mold for the ferret one a portion of sales are going to be donated to our rescue. Please follow her on TikTok

Our sweet Mitzki posed for the mold design 😊
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sticking with me and supporting the rescue during grief. It was just mine and Justin's going steady anniversary and that was such a hard day for me. But I know you are out there praying for me and believing in me and my mission to take care of these babies and I appreciate it. Sometimes it is all that gets me through the day. Thank you.

Grace & Min-Ji: The story of how they came to be
Tumblr media
Everyone in BTS had a pet at one point. Taehyung had Yeontan, Namjoon had Monie, Yoongi had Holly, Hobi had Mickey, Jin had three sugar gliders as well as a Jjangu and Jungkook had Gureum then Bam and Jimin had his childhood pet Ddosun.
Grace, however, never had any pets growing up. She had been content to deal with friends' pets, getting cuddles from the BTS pets or animals on set. And the break came. She had more time on her hands now and since she was living completely separately now to her bandmates, she was starting to feel a bit lonely.
She needed a pet that would be independent but easy to look after, considering she would have to give the pet to her parents to look after at one point. After discussions with her parents and Jin, a cat was decided on. But Grace being Grace, she didn’t want just a pretty cat who would look good on Instagram.
Her eyes had been on getting a Maine-coon cat - a massive feline with a powerful yet muscular athletic body with large pointed ears and thick fluffy fur. Little tufts of fur on their ears and paws and their tail would be at least as long as their body. Sociable, extremely intelligent and active.
So the hunt began.
There was a breeder in Busan who bred cats from Malaysia and they happened to have a few kittens as well as adult cats for sale. Grace had been keeping an eye on their Facebook page since they announced the cats were available and it didn’t take much convincing to get Jin in the car and for a short road trip to Busan.
“All this way for a cat,” Jin had grumbled but had packed a bag anyway and filled up the car without much sighing. While he didn’t feel the need to have a pet, he knew in a year that he would be in the military and Grace would be on her own.
She had seen a white cat in the background of a video, completely ignoring the fact that someone was trying to film it. It moved easily around the other cats, unbothered, content to climb up the cat tower and lick its large paws. That was the one she had her eyes on.
Being two members of BTS allowed private access to the cattery and Jin found himself surrounded by cats of different sizes and types.
“I guess you're a pussy magnet,” Grace quipped with a sly grin. The shocked gasp from the man in question made her laugh as she headed in the direction of the cat that had caught her eye from the beginning.
There he was, completely chill and not bothered by the two strangers in the room. He lounged on the windowsill, tail waving lazily against the breeze as he stared out the window. Quietly and trying not to spook him, Grace sat down against the wall the window was on and simply waited.
It was as if he knew his presence was needed because the white cat stood and stretched and turned around to use Grace’s shoulders to get down and straight into her lap where he curled up into a ball.
“I take it he’s the one,” Jin asked as he came over, completely covered in cat hair yet he couldn’t help but grin at the amazed smile on Grace’s face. He knew she had fallen head over heels for the feline.
“I think I’ve been chosen instead.”
The paperwork took an hour and a little visit to the vet on the way, but Grace came home with the white cat she wanted and named on the spot.
Min-ji.

That time a sugar glider mauled me
When I was young(ish), my family met another family who owned sugar gliders. This encounter was a chance one--they were hosting a garage sale, their sugar gliders were in a cage outside and climbing around.
Of course, me being me, the moment I saw the creatures my garage sale dreams were forgotten in favor of learning everything I could.
About five hours and many serious conversations later, we'd purchased two sugar gliders, met the lovely family who bred them and of course, acquired a suitable cage & all the supplies we'd need to care for them. (Never mind the actual garage stuff for sale).
So on that day, we drove home, my mom holding the little sugar gliders in a smaller carrying cage on her lap. They were squeaking.
We were all in love.
Fast forward a week. Sugar gliders are finicky animals. They must be carried (or worn) by their Principal in a small cloth pouch that hangs around your neck and stays under your shirt so the glider can smell your scent. This is a process called 'bonding', and it makes it so the gliders won't attempt to kill you, bite you or crab at you because they doesn't know you.
Rather, you can (eventually) hold them & pet them once they've been trained.
The garage sale family/glider breeders informed us that this process would last about two weeks. We had to get bonding pouches. However, based on the advice of the family, who made their own bonding pouches, we could easily make two ourselves.
My mom and I, being the crafty sorts, took to this idea and hand-sewed our own pouches. It. Took. Six. Hours.
The finished products seemed like they would be reliable. The pouches were a little crooked (in the way The Godfather was a little bit of a criminal), but, as my mom said, it's not like the sugar gliders would feel the difference.
With this foolish thought, I ended up wearing my pouch outside a week later, (glider within), to take something to my dad, who was doing yard work.
I wonder if you can guess what happened next.
My sugar glider found a small gap (or perhaps, had been gnawing at our sewing handiwork for a few days) & made a decently-sized escape hatch to wiggle through. Upon hearing birdsong and smelling the outdoors, she decided to make her great escape.
Imagine my surprise at feeling something tickle my shoulder while I stood in the grass, then turning and seeing my sugar glider.
A moment ticked by. Time slowed down. My glider launched herself at the lawn mover in slow motion.
I reacted instantaneously but only managed to batt her away from the mower. She ended up on the grass behind it--and, freedom in her sights, started running for the nearest tree. Visions of losing her in my mind, I knew if I didn't catch her in approximately 0.5 seconds, she'd end up being eaten by an owl.
I lunged over the mower, slid like a baseball player and pounced on her. She didn't like this and started biting. Before i knew it, my hands were both covered in blood as she kept going, even when I stood up.
As much as it hurt, I had other priorities. One-handed, I grasped her as I attempted to inspect the bag. Finding the hole, I pinched it shut, thrust her in, extricated my fingers from her teeth and zipped it closed.
Then, and only then, I allowed myself to screech, "OWWWWW!"
(My dad, I should note, had headphones in this whole time, and though he saw me, was not inclined to help as he believed the creature was my responsibility.)
The glider was safe. I, as the Principal, was pleased.
My mother, once told, was relieved and congratulated me on my heroics. New pouches were ordered off Etsy. My hand was bandaged.
The gliders thrived for a few great years, then passed away. They will be missed, especially my little spitfire, who eventually calmed into our bond and even let me pet and do tricks with her. I think some part of her was grateful she hadn't been killed by a lawn mover.
Maybe she was disappointed she'd never tasted freedom. But her life was good.
Nonetheless, my hand didn't heal for two weeks after that and I still have one scar. I think of her whenever I see it.

Points Before Purchasing a Glucose Glider
Tumblr media
buy sugar gliders
There are a number associated with ways to go about some sugar glider sale made, but going to sort it out the right way can be difficult. There are some important tips that have to be adopted. This is true the moment someone buys everybody pet, of course, nevertheless it really becomes even more necessary with exotic household pets. Our favorite little marsupials aren't as difficult as some creatures, but it's always important to do issues the right way, to avoid regrets later. It would go on a chapter in a decently-long book to really formulate the full theory regarding the best way to approach your sale, but here are a couple tips to keep in mind:
buy sugar gliders
1) Know where that you are at.
One of the initial things you'll need to discover is where to acquire sugar gliders. These are not always easy modest critters to find, along with sometimes breeders do not work close. You'll want to look around to see what exactly is on the table, options-wise, designed for where you can make a pay for. This is an important factor that can help you sum a lot out not alone about where to find carbohydrates gliders, but looking for supplies for them, amongst other things. Doing your geographic research is often a very important step maybe you might even want to do first.
2) Know that what you observe is what you obtain.
A lot of breeders definitely will conduct sales on a distance. In a lot more rural areas, here is the only option accessible, but this is at times done overseas. There are many of issues with range purchases, but one too is the reliance upon photographs that is needed. Even on a premium video, it can be very difficult if not impossible to find certain important information on a possible pet's health that you need to find out. Not all sugar glider for sale are like healthy as they really should be! Always see pets in person first, if you can ,.
3) Know what a going rate is actually!
Some breeders level their prices upward. This one is so effortless, it's easy to overlook: knowledge much are glucose gliders before you buy one. Prices are different, but there is certainly a reasonable price to watch out for in your area. Don't get taken out into spending far more!
Following these actions is a good foundation towards making a sound acquire, but there are some as well. Research is normally key to the whole thing to do with pets, specifically exotic pets. A small amount of research in advance will spare a lot of time, a tough time and money in the forthcoming, whether everyone anyone meet related to a person's marsupial friends can be on the level on hand or not; usually do not mistake a positive smile for one from authority, and check all your sources double for important highlights. Never be afraid to be able to ask questions! Those that know things such as where to find sugar gliders tend to be those that moreover know lots within the pets themselves! Do not be afraid to start a good conversation. You might perhaps make a new good friend!

Mealworm Mills - High Quality Mealworms for Sale in the USA
Tumblr media
Mealworm Mills - Welcome to one of the best online portals for mealworms for sale. We’re Mealworm Mills. The “we”, is made up of, Travis (myself), my wife Jessica and my best and oldest friend Daniel. After retiring from the military and a brief stint in defense contracting, I decided to move to the country for a more peaceful life. My wife and myself were looking for a way to supplement our homestead fowl’s diet with affordable nutrients. We learned quickly that the supply of live mealworms and superworms was unreliable, often finding stores and online shops out of stock so we began farming our own to provide for our flock.
After some time farming for ourselves, we realized we had the means and know-how to farm on a larger scale so we could offer a reliable option of live insects to you too. After about a year, a lot more worm racks and beetle bins later we are now a full production mealworm farm.
We love mealworms and superworms as a regular part of our flocks diet. But birds aren’t the only ones these worms are good for. They make excellent live fishing bait, no fancy lures needed when you have a live worm squirming on the end of the hook. This appeals to me in particular because I like to drop a line, sit back and let the worm do the work. If you have omnivorous mammals like sugar gliders, rats, mice or hamsters, mealworms can be incorporated into a snack regime, or be a staple part of a balanced diet.
Carnivorous and omnivorous reptiles and amphibians also enjoy live insects as a staple part of their diet and the opportunity for them to hunt is as fulfilling for them as it is for us to watch. Mealworms are an amazingly versatile food source but that wasn’t the only appeal. Sustainability is very important to us, most sources of protein intended for human or animal consumption take up a lot of space. Acres and acres of land are dedicated to producing food, but mealworms provide a reliable source of fat, protein and other nutrients with a negligible ecological footprint. Live mealworms contain about 62% moisture, 20% protein, 13% fat and 3.1% carbohydrates in addition to other micronutrients.
Just as our flocks health is important to us, so is the health of our mealworms. We provide a nutritional diet to our live insects, organic feed that contains all of the macronutrients for the worms’ optimal growth and they are hydrated using only natural sources of moisture from fruits, vegetables and other safe to consume food. We stand behind our quality.

What laws protect ESAs:
The Fair Housing Act
This helps you find housing with your ESA even at locations that don't normally allow pets without having to pay a pet fee.
Renters must first have two questions answered affirmatively: 1). "Does the individual making the ESA request have a diagnosed disability?" 2). "If so, does the individual have a disability-related need for the emotional support animal?" The only document that is required to show to a landlord is your ESA Doctor's Letter. No other documents are necessary.
A housing provider can legitimately refuse your ESA request in any of the following scenarios:
The property owner can prove that allowing the ESA would subject them to undue financial or administrative stress.
Your ESA may be rejected if it is too large for the property. One example might be an ESA request for a horse to be accommodated in a small apartment.
If your ESA has caused damage to the property or presented a threat to another tenant, your landlord can rescind ESA accommodation.
If the property is owner-occupied and has four or fewer units, an ESA may be denied.
If the housing is managed by a religious organization or is a members-only club, the FHA regulations do not apply and an ESA can be refused access.
If the property is for rent or sale by owner only, it does not qualify for FHA protections.
The Air Carrier Access Act
In general, this act allows ESAs to ride with you in the cabin of the plane without issue. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
"The year 2021 started with major news for ESA owners: as of January 11, 2021, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) no longer requires airlines to accommodate emotional support animals. In the years prior to this rule change, all airlines were required by law to accommodate owners of ESAs with proper documentation from a licensed mental health professional."
Airlines may exclude animals that:
Are too large or heavy to be accommodated in the cabin.
Pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
Cause a significant disruption to cabin and service.
Are prohibited from entering a foreign country.
Airlines are never required to accept snakes, reptiles, ferrets, rodents, sugar gliders, and spiders.
What kind of documentation can be required of a person travelling with an emotional support animal or psychiatric service animal? Airlines may require documentation that is not older than one year from the date of your scheduled initial flight that states: 1). You have a mental or emotional disability that is recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). 2). You need your emotional support or psychiatric support animal as an accommodation for air travel and/or for activity at your destination. 3). The individual providing the assessment is a licensed mental health professional and the passenger is under his/her professional care. 4). The licensed health care professional’s date and type of professional license and jurisdiction or state in which their license was issued.
Airlines can request specific documentation and/or 48-hours advanced notice for service animals that are emotional support animals and psychiatric service animals.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
There is actually not a lot of concrete laws regarding ESAs and the EEOC. There’s nothing in the ADA or its regulations that addresses emotional support dogs as workplace accommodations. There’s also nothing in written guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency that enforces Title I.
Federal public accommodation laws do not require businesses and organizations to accommodate disabled individuals with regard to their requested use of emotional support animals. Some state laws and city ordinances even make it a crime to try to pass off an emotional support animal as a legally-protected, disability-related service animal. While it requires accommodating a true service animal, the ADA expressly excludes emotional support animals from the protections granted in Title III, which regulates public accommodations and their obligations to customers, guests, patients, patrons, clients, etc.
Title I of the ADA—which prohibits disability discrimination in the employment context and affirmatively requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees—is completely silent with regard to service dogs and other animals as examples of appropriate accommodations.
Nevertheless, in an event that discrimination takes place, more often than not the EEOC takes the position that a service animal—and even an emotional support animal—is a reasonable accommodation in the employment context, depending on the circumstances. For example, in 2017 Laferriere’s psychiatrist prescribed an emotional support animal to help him cope with his disabilities and “maintain appropriate social interactions.” but was denied by a trucking company that had a “no pet” policy and revoked his offer of employment. The EEOC sided with Laferriere and is seeking injunctive relief, a change in the employer’s policies, the hiring of Laferriere, back pay and emotional pain and suffering compensation, and even punitive damages. So what should you do as an employer if presented with a request to bring an ESA into the workplace? 1). Look to see if the workplace policies can be modified. The answer typically depends on the employee’s job and the work environment — for instance, there could be some jobs or work environments in which it would be difficult to accommodate someone having a dog with them, regardless of whether it’s a service animal or an emotional support animal. For example, animals might be prohibited in an emergency room (ER) so an ER nurse probably couldn’t have an animal with her while working in the ER. 2). Check to see if the animal is needed due to a diagnosed disorder recognized by the DSM. All ESAs need a letter of prescription from a licensed medical professional. This document you are allowed to see and all other documents are considered fakes. You have no obligation to accommodate a pet that is not a Service or ESA. 3). Talk with the employee about whether the emotional support animal is trained to be in a work environment and will be under the employee’s control at all times. Under the ADA, employers do not have to provide any accommodations that pose an undue hardship. There are 6 public access guidelines typically expected from any animal in a public space. Learn what those are here. 4). Suggest a trial basis and see if it works. Employers who do this often make a written agreement with the employee that there will be a trial period, how long it will last, and what factors might end the trial period early. For example, if the emotional support dog shows any sign of aggression or if the employee cannot keep the animal quiet or under control, the employer will immediately end the trial period and deny the request.
