Gabriele Dell'otto's cover for the 2006's Annihilation: Prologue #1 one-shot(one of the two greatest Marvel cosmic events ever produced, along with The Infinity Gauntlet).
R.I.P. Keith Giffen and thanks for the fond memories (the modern Guardians of the Galaxy wouldn't be the same without him, among the MANY other things he created during his long career at DC).

There is one thing that the mcu did awfully wrong and its make their version of Starlord basically just Bug (flirty, funny, kind of annoying but harmless) instead of the overly responsible emotional wreck dad friend he originally was to the team

can't wait to see which species you choose for the "chordata" photos. good fucking luck trying to summarise that phylum into four images lol. seriously though, i'm having so much fun with these polls! i'm super excited to get into chordata and vote for my favourite animals, but it's been really interesting learning about all the other animal phylums that i'd never heard of
I had a tough time choosing, but ngl choosing example images for Arthropoda was harder lol.
I am excited to dive deeper into the winning phyla, but I’m also glad that so many people got to have this brief glimpse into the vast diversity of animal life this world has to offer!

I can’t stop thinking about how good an animated movie about the marvels-verse a la spiderverse would be.
And I don’t mean just with carol, kamala and monica but every marvel, they’d bring all the different captain marvels like mar-vell or phyla-vell, maybe they’d have different variants of the same character like seen in beyond the limit.
I just think it would be super cool

Been having a good think about what a possible Guardian’s film with the new team with Rocket at the helm would look like.
First off...High Evolutionary isn’t dead
Tumblr media
The new team has Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Adam, Phyla, Cosmo and Blurp
Three of the team are his creations “his property” (not to mention all the kids they rescued) and I doubt he will take Rocket and the Guardians destroying everything he has worked to make “to create perfection” lightly.
I can totally see him slowly rebuilding his resources and seeking revenge. Maybe he tries to get Rocket, Adam and Phyla back but when unsuccessful creates a threat to a planet or something to draw them out, ask them to hand themselves over or he’ll kill the planet/people. Something that will put Rocket in a hard situation as a leader. Showing Rocket adjusting to being the teams captain would be super interesting. Would love to see more of the new team either way.
Feel free to reply with theories! I want to hear them!
(also sorry this is a bit rambley, very tired haha)

Comics Tumblr is so bizarre to me as a lifelong comics fan, because I just look and see a ton of blogs that are super devoted to, like 2-3 particular characters or a half-dozen at most, or just one tiny corner of the Marvel or DC universes.
You have people out there who are just the biggest Phyla-Vell or Brainwave Jr. stans alive and their blog is entirely themed around that character. Whereas I, the continuity nut that I am, have far too many obscure comics blorbos and love them all too much to ever theme my blog around just one or two of them.

Daily Animal Walkthrough 8/30/2024
Hi everyone (and there actually is an everyone now because I have two followers instead of just one!!), welcome back to another daily animal walkthrough! We’ve been getting pretty lucky lately on these daily animals; lots of things from other phyla besides Chordata in here. So, I’m going to get right to it with my first guess of human!
Tumblr media
OH YEAH! It’s going to be a good animal! As you probably already know, getting Bilateria means that this animal isn’t a chordate! Although I have a feeling that this animal is going to be super-duper interesting (not an Arthropod or a Mollusk either), I’m going to make what I’m pretty sure is one of the mathematically best guesses of fire ant, a hymenopteran insect in the phylum Arthropoda.
Tumblr media
Ooh, ok. It is an arthropod, but not an insect or anything else closely related to an ant. This means it’s in Chelicerata, which includes arachnids, sea spiders, and horseshoe crabs. I’m going to guess a spider because there are more of those in Metazooa than any of the previous things I mentioned, and the mathematically best guess here has to be an arachnid.
Tumblr media
So, it’s an arachnid, but not a spider. I’m going to guess a scorpion, and if not that then a tick or a harvestman. This is one of those clades where you can’t expect to win in three guesses like you can with some mammals. Other phyla tend to take longer because we don’t know as much about them, so more things are considered to be equally related to each other and there are fewer distinct clades.
Tumblr media
Nice, the answer is going to be the other type of scorpion that’s in the game!
Tumblr media
I win! That was a pretty good game. Although I could have gotten it in 4, we can’t be lucky everytime, and 5 is legitimately the perfect number of guesses that I could have had without winning any coin flips. Hope you enjoyed today’s daily animal walkthrough!
And, if you made it all the way to the end, here’s the new daily animal question:
Are you afraid of any arachnids like spiders and scorpions, are you an arachnid lover, or are you somewhere in between?

2. a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
idk how compelling this is but the reason i think it's so hard for me to write gamora as a bottom is that she was never really given power/control growing up, so the fact that she has it in the bedroom is very liberating and makes her a lot more comfortable. i think she could be very switchy but i personally could never write her as strictly a bottom.
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
don't have a screenshot but any variation of "gamora's ending was good actually you're all just mad that she didn't end up back with quill and that's misogynistic" posts. that's not why we're mad and also wanting to see a female character be in a romantic relationship is not misogynistic at all?? need people to unlearn the 2016 buzzfeed "being a strong female character™️ means you cannot have any romantic connections ever" brand of feminism (which is not actually feminism, idk what it actually is but it's something along the lines of girlboss capitalism pushed by male hollywood executives).
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
i don't see rocket as groot's dad. i feel like peter fulfills that role more and while rocket and groot are definitely closer and rocket is shown to be a disciplinary figure towards him i've always believed their best friend dynamic from vol 1 carried over to the new groot as well. i view rocket more as groot's super cool chill uncle who he can go to sneak a beer and talk shit with at family gatherings.
9. worst part of canon
toss-up between gamora's death and the fact that she was sidelined in vol 3. i'm sorry but i cannot believe james thought not showing a single scene of her with the ravagers before the ending was a good idea. showing not telling is like the number one rule in storytelling, you can just tell me 2014!gamora has a better relationship with the ravagers than she ever did with the guardians and expect me to believe it. also aging down phyla.
10. worst part of fanon
the constant sidelining of gamora (don't even try to deny it it's very obvious, esp after vol 3), the dumbing down of quill (he's not an incompetent leader and he doesn't spout pop culture references 24/7, he's a human being with flaws who at his core is a good person and good leader), the weird ass ships (once again no matter how anthropomorphic he is rocket is still a RACCOON), people who don't read comics but pretend like they know the comic characterizations of characters.
20. part of canon you found tedious or boring
kraglin uhhhh as much as i love vol 2 i never cared much for the ravagers b plot, i can take it or leave it. it does lead to a very emotional ending but i never find myself paying too much attention to the yondu/rocket/groot scenes on my rewatches.
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
majority of the 616 gamora ships thanks to you. i think she should be allowed to make out with everyone. as a treat.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Look, Mom, they let me into the animal kingdom!
Pineapple Sea Cucumber (Thelenota ananas)
South Pacific Ocean
Status: Endangered
Threats: overfishing for food
----------
Trivia answer for yesterday’s post!
Sea urchins belong to the phylum Echinodermata, also including such things as sea cucumbers, starfish, and sand dollars!
Another phylum, Cnidaria, includes sea anemone, coral, and jellyfish, among others. Besides the “big” phyla of animals we recognize like vertebrates, arthropods, and molluscs, there are multiple other high-level phyla for things like millipedes and flatworms — the super-weirdos who branched off on their own evolutionary path and survived. Not to mention the microscopics. Holy shit.
(Today I learned there is a phyla of animals named “penis worms”.)

hey! my parents recently bought a house near orlando and the yard leaves much to be desired. they are already planning on changing a lot of the garden, do you know of any good low-maintenance plants they could plant? unfortunately they are snowbirds so they won’t be around to maintain anything in the summer
thanks for reaching out! it would be awesome if your parents could get a lot of natives for their yard. it is healthiest for the environment and makes for a very low maintenance yard because the plants are in their natural habitat
you can get some ideas of plants to use here:
and you can find native plant nurseries here:
ive heard great things about The Natives and Green Isle Gardens, which i dont believe are in orange county but are still nearby.
you may be able to hire a native plant nursery to do landscaping for you or offer you a consultation
as general advice i immediately suggest replacing as much lawn grass as you can with Phyla nodiflora, known as f(r)ogfruit. its low growing, hardy, adorable, spreads easily, and is good for pollinators. very popular with native gardeners.
muhly grass is a beautiful landscape plant and it is not in the plants best interest to be maintained but people are insistent upon giving it a terrible buzzcut. it doesnt need this. it looks like a normal bushy grass most of the year but in the fall blooms into a beautiful feathery puff of pink-purple.
Tumblr media
i also think it would be nice to get yourself a beautiful longleaf pine, Pinus palustris (NOT slash pine or loblolly!)
im not super familiar with the landscape of orlando, so i think it might be rewarding to check out some nearby natural areas for inspiration as well. if you do, try taking pictures of what you find and posting them to iNaturalist so people can weigh in on your finds and you can learn more about them. i would be happy to help ID for you if you send me your username
i wish you the best! we can use all the restorative landscaping we can get!

i have a love-hate relationship with the gotg movies bc on one hand i saw the 1st in the cimena when i was 9 and liked it. On the other hand its mcu and suffers from being mcu disease, which reached back around to the comics for a few years unfortunately. And it made Gamora and Peter have a thing because she's the only girl on team and romance sells. which also reached around to the comics eventually.
And it erased a bunch of relevant characters like Phyla, Moondragon, Adam, (he's there now but too little too late) Bug, Nova, (not in the team but super important to Peter and Gamora. Annoyingly they put the Nova Corps in the 1st movie as well depsite the fact that Xandar being toast is part of why Peter felt that they need the team to prevent more tragedy!! And Nova helped them find a hq!) and even Vance who was the guy they stole their team's name from... On the bright side those characters don't have mcu disease. On the dark side, 3 of the missing characters are queer.
I also hate how they closed Peter's arc in the 3rd film. It repulses me. "Hello faceless asshole grandpa I abandoned my space friends to move in with you after not mentioning you ever before." like damn all because it didnt work out with his dead girlfriend's alternate self? What happened to the "they are a family :)" thing? Traditional family structures win in the end, huh? Or is this their version of that time in the comics (starlord 2017) when he's stuck on earth, gets arrested and has to hang out with an old man as community service? Nevermind the fact that it ends with him going back to space. Also mcu Peter is a manchild in general and it just got progressively worse.
But i mean, I liked the 1st film as a 9 year old, and as a regular viewer who doesnt really know what to look for in terms of flaws, theyre ok, I'm just at the strong opinions phase of the hyperfixation.

is marvel annihilation standalone
I wouldn't say it's standalone but it's definitely a great starting point for the cosmic side of Marvel and I think it does make sense if you don't have any prior context. It was a big cosmic event basically!
There's the main event book Annihilation (2006) + the prologue comic Annihilation: Prologue and four other miniseries set before the main event book (Annihilation: Nova, Annihilation: Silver Surfer, Annihilation: Ronan, and Annihilation: Super Skrull). There's a few other series that led into this for more context but not super necessary.
For Phyla purposes you only really need to read the main event book and probably prologue to understand what she's doing! I really recommend the Nova series though too because I like it haha.
It then leads into the Annihilation Conquest event, which leads into Guardians of the Galaxy 2008!
Annihilation basically revitalised as such the cosmic side of Marvel and is a good place to start for the 2000s onwards stuff though so don't worry if you don't know much :)
Rambled a bit but if you're curious about any of the other characters in the event I can maybe give some guidance on prior reading if you want.
