Becoming Your Obsession: An Encor.es Interview with Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship
Tumblr media
In a few days’ time, The Totally Awesome Adventures of Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship -- an 80-page comic book based on the local eclectic duo -- will be available to the general, unsuspecting public. I recently chatted with Corey Goodman and Christopher Eilers about the challenges of fulfilling their Kickstarter project, how they went about working with local artists, and what it's like to see yourself converted into a comic book character.
The band is hosting a release party at Foam on Friday, June 21. It's totally free, all-ages, and practically guaranteed to be a great time -- there will be music, comedy, opportunities to meet the comic's artists, and much more.
Hi Corey, hi Chris! I'm really excited that we get to chat about the comic -- I've been looking forward to it since your Kickstarter project wrapped up.
Knowing you two as well as I do, I know a comic book is a natural fit for your band -- heck, your most-known song is called "I Like Marvel, You Like DC" -- but what gave you the push to take the project from a dream to reality?
Corey: Well, I think we just had a few people drawing rad pictures of us, and we talked about it, and it sounded like a neat idea. I believe I had just heard about Kickstarter at the time as well, and told Chris we could make the comic happen using that. I was super excited about it, but he was pretty hesitant to the idea at first.
Why were you hesitant, Chris?
Chris: I didn't think we would be able to raise enough money. And I thought it was strange for a band with no recordings available to make a comic book about itself. But then again, who decides the hierarchy of the things an artist must produce?
Corey: As soon as it went live, I freaked out too. I thought there was no way we could do it. We ended up making our goal in less than 2 days, though, and the whole comic idea really started coming to life.
How did you guys find the artists you decided to work with? I know you mentioned that some people were already doing drawings of the band, but filling a comic had to take quite a bit more work.
Corey: Some people we talked to beforehand, some artists were just friends of ours who agreed to do it after we begged and pleaded with them, and some folks asked us and we said "Okay, that's fine, you can do that." It was a pretty huge task trying to fill the comic though, that's one reason it took us over a year to get it done! We had a few people drop out or cut back on their page counts which left us stranded a few times, but we eventually got it all figured out.
Chris: We know a lot of cool ladies and gentlemen affiliated with Star Clipper and the Spirits of St. Louis project. Also, we posted a bunch of stuff on the internet saying we were looking for artists. We wanted to be sure people just starting out could feel comfortable and get a paying gig.
Who wrote the stories? Did the artists write too, or did you find other people to help with that?
Corey: The stories were mostly written by the artists. We helped with a few of the stories, but a lot of the artists proposed an idea and ran with it. Some people wrote a story and then someone else drew it so it was a tag team effort.
Are you guys happy with the results?
Corey: I'm really happy with the result! I think the whole thing came out looking great, and it's really neat to see all these stories about yourself and your band. The artists' interpretations of us are also really rad, and for the most part, dead-on.
Chris: It looks better -- and more importantly, weirder -- than I could ever have imagined. It was interesting to see what people did with me as a character.
I am blown away though by how much work and time went into it. At this point, it definitely feels like a tree we've grown is finally ready to bear some fruit. In money form, hopefully -- haha, just kiddin'.
As a primer, how would you describe your live show to someone who's never seen Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship?
Corey: I would say the Superfun live show is pretty different than any other band you're going to see. It's pretty energetic, funny, and just kinda weird. It's mostly Chris and I playing a few songs, running around, and talking to each other about our days.
Chris: "Where do I begin to tell the story of how great a love can be, the sweet love story that is older than the sea?"
Our live show is like nothing you have ever seen, or ever wanted to see. Right now, we have four hot dogs and two Fabio cardboard cutouts with us on stage. My blazing, often too-loud guitar. Corey in his rock threads, shredding on vocals and running around. Lots of crowd interaction and alienation at the same time. We try to make everyone feel comfortable and uncomfortable.
Mostly though, it's about the rock -- fast-paced heartfelt rock and roll songs about love, friendship, happiness, frustration, pain, loss... A whole range of emotions delivered as disjointed pop gems. For lack of a better term, our shows are a bipolar experience that is different every time, even though we play the same songs.
The bottom line is we strive to make everyone feel involved and have a unique evening with Superfun Yeah Yeah Rocketship.
I'd say that's definitely true.
