welcome to the Secret Swords Speakeasy!
this bar is in the basement of a quaint café/library behind the swinging bookshelf of old novels in the back left corner.
the lights are low and the ceiling is high and arching, strung with softly glowing fairy lights. the bar is clean and several patrons sit along the stools with drinks as they listen to the swing jazz pumping in through the speakers.
the bouncer takes one look at your masked face and strange attire before stepping aside to let you in.
at the counter is one bartender, his own face masked from view. he’s chatting with a patron, his canine ears flicking with amusement. a shiny name-tag slapped onto his… armor(?) says “SKOFNUNG” in careful lettering.
he glanced over at you and waves! “welcome to the secret swords!” he says to you.

A Silent Observer
Summery: Echo takes a look around the speakeasy, curious about the place she’s found herself in.
AO3 Link
~~~~~
Echo sits in the corner, watching everyone interact, talking loudly or in hushed tones. It doesn’t matter either way, she hears it all the same. When she first heard of a speakeasy for superheroes she was… intrigued, to say the least. Suspicious too, but mostly intrigued. With how quietly they were talking, it was clear that it was intended for secrecy.
She takes a sip of her drink, taking in everyone individually. There is a huge variety of people here, hybrids and oddities alike. Some look vaguely normal, and others… well, Echo has her concerns, that’s for sure. Especially the person who has what seems to be a fishbowl over their head. They… well, she has no idea how that works in the slightest. Of course, a couple of others have strange appearances too, but she’s not here to judge. Who knows what happened to them before they came here, maybe it was as life-altering as hers.
Echo stands up, pushing away the memories before they even return. As interesting as listening can be, she should probably talk to others here, she could learn something much more fascinating that way. Her original path takes her towards the barkeep since he probably knows the most, but a passing conversation catches her interest.
With only slight hesitation, Echo walks over to them. A good starting point here would be joining people who are newer as well. They might not be very knowledgeable of this place, but they could know of things outside of here.
From constant banters, to unnecessary hand-to-hand combat, to purposely getting each other in trouble during risky missions, to being the main cause of Sam’s migraines; it was safe to say that you and Bucky considered yourselves to be each other’s nemesis. Although that soon changes when, courtesy of your silly banters, a certain mission goes slightly wrong - one which involves strong chemicals which, unbeknownst to you, were designed to mess with the brain and hormones, thus encouraging the need to breed and procreate amongst all those who inhale it... by @sinner-as-saint (f)(s)
idk if you're still doing these, but I got Superheroes/Superpowers ‎AU & 1920s ‎AU from the generator
(there is literally no way for me to write a 20s superhero au without landing on spider-man noir in some ways, but i did my best.)
Jack can’t explain why he is the way he is. He can’t explain why the grease and grime of New York City clings to him like a second skin, draping him in shadow until he’s unnoticeable, just another speck on the sidewalk. He can’t explain why his shots don’t miss, why the pistols bend to his will and the metal follows his movements, as if tangled in the nerves within his skin. He can’t explain why his trolley rides never cost a cent, why every carriage he hops always takes him to the destination he wants, why no jail cell can hold him for longer than a day or why most folks will listen to him without question if he murmurs something in their ear low enough.
He can’t explain why he can’t leave New York. He can’t explain why his feet can never cross the threshold of a train carriage, why his body seems to heave and drag the further he walks along the tracks.
All he knows is that this city wants to keep him, and keep him she will.
So he walks. That’s all Jack does now, walk the streets. The city takes him where she wants him to go. Sometimes it’s Medda’s, where he’ll paint one of her memories into reality, and her speakeasy will shine a bit brighter for it. Sometimes it’s a workhouse, where he’ll sneak blankets and food underneath the resident’s beds and pummel anyone who tries to stop him (the guards don’t question it anymore, not after what he did to their boss – and he’s made sure the workers know how to reach him if they try anything).
On one occasion, it’s the Refuge. He hadn’t wanted to go; he kept trying to turn around, but every road led him back to the iron gates. So he grits his teeth and walks right in, passes through all the guards and searchlights like a ghost. The kids are terrified when they see him – they’d scream if they had the energy left for it. He raises a finger to his lips and leaves them be.
According to the police, no one saw who killed Irvin Snyder. According to the inmates, they’d all been asleep when it happened.
It gets a bit harder when the journalists keep showing up; the Plumber girl and her smartmouth sidekick. They’re good kids, he knows it, but they’re a pain in his neck half the time. There’s a quiet knowledge inside Jacob’s eyes, candles flickering where Jack doesn’t notice them, full of secrets that Jack’s desperate to know; and Plumber’s hair, her smile, it’s sunlight, raw and unfiltered. They burn through Jack’s shadows, light up all the places he tries to hide. He’s surprised they’ve stuck around, if he’s being honest – the city’s had no trouble hiding him from anyone before. But they keep finding him, keep figuring him out in ways he doesn’t want them to, and it’s getting difficult to manage.
“Sir! Sir, if we could just-!”
“I’m busy!” Jack snaps – his skin prickles on a phantom bullet, and he whirls around in a flurry of wool and leather, firing through the skull of one of Wiesel’s goons.
“Katherine, I think maybe we listen to the vigilante on this one-?!”
“Hang on-!” Plumber shoves a corpse out of her way – it flops gracelessly onto a sawhorse, the neck jutting at an unnatural angle – and drags Jacobs with her.
“Katherine – Katherine, may we please not walk into the middle of a shoot-out, Katherine-!” Jacobs’ voice steadily rises as the bullets fly closer to them both – Jack makes a strangled noise behind his teeth and shoves a table onto its side, blocking them both from the fire.
“Mister The Cowboy!” Plumber smiles brightly at him, either oblivious to the gunfire splintering the wood closest to her head or simply not caring. “Katherine Plumber, thrilled to officially meet you - we were hoping to hear what you had to say on Joseph Pulitzer’s latest editorial on your-”
Jack shoves a fistful of bullets into his chamber and fires into the fray, following his bullets with his eyes as he wills them to land in the chests of two hulking thugs.
“'-self-serving ego-boosting desecration of our beloved Big Apple’,” Plumber continues – there’s blood on her collar, and Jack’s not quite sure if she hasn’t noticed, or just doesn’t care. “Quote-unquote.”
“You follow me to a shoot-out to ask me that?!”
“Well, David here,” Plumber gestures to her partner, who’s blushing something fierce, as if the only issue he has with this situation is how very embarrassing it is for him, “noted that in all the activity you’ve been involved in-” it’s polite of her to leave out the word ‘criminal’, Jack supposes, “-a civilian has never once been injured. It seems you have a rather protective approach to strangers – does the Tribune’s declaration of you being a quote, ‘guardian of the city’, unquote, hold any weight?”
“It does not.” Jack grits out through a clenched jaw. “And if you wanna know what I think about Joe-” two more rounds, one after the other, ending in two sickening squelches, “-he’s a rattlesnake. His precious Big Apple’s rotten to the core.”
“Is that on the record?” Jacobs pipes up. “Can we use that?”
Plumber claps her hands excitedly.
“Oh, yes-!”
“No!”
Okay, I'm writing a little 5 maybe chapter fic, however I have nowhere I can read the comics. Does the black cat have other singers, and if so, would it be cute/on brand to have them have bird themed stage names? Like, Canary, Wren, Blue/Bluejay/Jay, Robin, Dove, Blackbird. Stuff like that? So Felicia could be "the Cat that caught the Canary?" (I know she's the white widow but shhhh)
Context:
Alright, so the Black Cat is a speakeasy. For my non-Americans, a speakeasy was essentially a bar/club during the prohibition era in the states. I’ve seen it called one of the worst kept secrets of that time period lol. These places were illegal and often associated with crime, but also art. Performance art had like a mini renaissance during this time period but it is more largely attributed to the Harlem Renaissance in New York. Drag, poetry, dance performance, and music were all a part of it.
But the Black Cat specifically fits the more stereotypical speakeasy idea of illicit dancers and a hub for crime. Felicia even refers to herself at one point as a ‘burlesque dancer’. The servers all wear a ‘sexy black cat’ outfit, though we do see other outfits. Felicia aims to keep the Black Cat as neutral territory for everyone, which is why she doesn’t like to give information to Urich and Peter. We even see the Mayor and district attorney there at the same time as the Goblin.
It’s a big deal for a woman to own a speakeasy and for her to have a mostly women staff because before prohibition a lot of saloons/bars were catered only towards men and often some didn’t allow women as patrons, which is probably why she is so aggressive about her reputation and the reputation of the Black Cat.
Tumblr media
Actual answer:
Now, as for singers, we only meet one in the 2020 run, Holly Babson who is murdered(though I wouldn’t recommend using her in your story cause she has like a whole thing). With that said using show/stage names totally makes sense, especially with a theme! Not just because it’s good to separate yourself from your stage life as a performer but also because you don’t want your name out there being in a place that is illegal. Especially if it’s raided.
The only thing I might be careful about would be how many bird name superhero’s there are 😭 which you could incorporate but I could potentially see it get messy/confusing. But even that rlly isn’t a big deal by any means.
Can’t wait to read your fic!
Fraxus Week 2023
Day One: Tumblr | Ao3
Six Feet Away - Laxus had quickly written off his college roommate. He didn’t party, didn’t go out, and didn’t do anything but study. All it would take was an unfair professor, a lot of door slamming, and the perfect prank to show Laxus how wrong he could be about a man who slept only six feet away.
Day Two: Tumblr | Ao3
The Poolboy, The Barman & The Things They Left Unsaid - Seeing your ex boyfriend is always awkward. Having to work with him, in a job where your uniform is a speedo no less, is almost too painful to deal with. But Freed had a left lot of things unfinished with Laxus, and maybe now was the time to fix them.
Day Three: Tumblr | Ao3
A Small Price To Pay - Lead singer of rock band Raijinshuu, Laxus has been in the closet since the band became popular. His bassist Freed has been out since the beginning. Now that Laxus is ready to come out, he'll do anything to make it happen. Even if that means kissing his friend on stage.
Day Four: Tumblr | Ao3
The World At Their Feet - When one dates a superhero, he accepts danger into his life. When one designs costumes for superhero’s, he accepts danger into his life. When one does both, he best be able to protect himself. The question is: when it comes to it, can Freed Justine protect himself? Laxus wished he could be sure.
Day Five: Tumblr | Ao3
One Night In New York - Sergeant Laxus Dreyar took down speakeasies. He located and destroyed them. He was the best at what he did, and knew what he was doing was right. Except, did he believe that? Or did he just need a piano playing criminal to change his mind.
Day Six: Tumblr | Ao3
The Agent & The Albion - Every agents has an Albion. The tech worker behind the scenes who will do everything to make the agents successful in his mission. Laxus hasn’t heard from his Albion since an issue that got Laxus arrested. But even prison couldn’t keep Laxus' Albion away. Now all he has to do is survive a jailbreak.
Day Seven: Tumblr | Ao3
Attending A Costume Party? How To Stay Chic And Fashionable
Tumblr media
Are you attending a costume party soon? Maintaining a stylish look in a costume can be exciting and challenging. This article provides valuable suggestions for achieving a balanced mix of both. Whether attending a Halloween party or a themed event, these helpful tips will allow you to make a fashionable statement while staying true to your character. So, let’s get started on creating or finding the perfect costume that will turn heads. To stay chic at a costume party, consider the following: 1. Find Inspiration For Your Costume The first step to creating a chic and fashionable costume is finding inspiration from movies, TV shows, books, historical figures, and pop culture icons. Then, brainstorm ideas based on your interests and hobbies, and use search engines and social media to find images that align with your vision. Feel free to get creative and put your spin on your costume. Mix and match elements to create a unique look. Remember, the key to a chic and fashionable costume is not just wearing a pre-made costume but crafting a stylish look that is true to your character. 2. Choose The Right Pieces And Accessories Choosing the right pieces and accessories can create a standout and fashionable look when dressing up for a costume party. Consider the party theme and the character you want to embody. For example, for a 1920s speakeasy theme, you might choose a flapper dress, a feathered headband, and long gloves. Accessories can transform your costume, so don't hesitate to add a few extra pieces to complete your look. A statement necklace or earrings can add glamour to a vintage-inspired outfit, while a hat can introduce whimsy to a playful costume. Ensure your accessories are comfortable and don’t interfere with your party enjoyment. 3. Incorporate Your Style Into Your Costume Incorporating your style into your costume can add a unique touch. Stay true to the party's theme while expressing your taste and style. For example, if the party has a 1980s theme, you can incorporate a vintage vibe into your outfit along with your style.  Select colors that complement your skin tone and enhance your natural beauty. 4. Accessorize To Take Your Costume To The Next Level Now that you've incorporated your style into your costume, it’s time to consider how to enhance your look further. This is where accessories come into play. Accessorizing is one of the easiest ways to take your costume to the next level. Accessories can transform a simple outfit into a show-stopping look. Start by considering the period or style of your costume. For a 1920s flapper, add long, dangling earrings, a feather boa, and a beaded headband for a glamorous touch. If you're dressing up as a superhero, add a cape, gloves, and a mask to complete the look. Be bold and experiment with accessories. A pirate costume can be elevated with a chunky necklace, hoop earrings, and a belt with a large buckle. Adding a hat or wig can also help add some extra flair. Another effective way to enhance your costume is by incorporating props. For example, a witch costume can be taken to the next level with a broomstick, cauldron, and a black cat stuffed animal. Adding a prop makes your outfit more exciting and gives you something to do with your hands in pictures or at a party. Accessorizing is about having fun and animating your character. So, be bold and experiment with different accessories until you find the perfect look for your costume party. 1. Creative Makeup And Hair Ideas For Your Costume Creative makeup and hair are crucial to transforming yourself into your character when nailing a costume party.  For example, if you're dressing up as a mermaid, you could add some shimmer to your makeup with a highlighter or glitter eyeshadow, focusing on the cheekbones and eyelids. For your hair, create waves with a curling iron and add a sprinkle of glitter or hair chalk for a magical touch. If you're going as a vampire, you could use makeup to contour and shade your face to give yourself a more gaunt and angular appearance. A pale foundation, dark eyeshadow for contouring, and deep red or black lipstick can help achieve this look. Consider slicked-back waves for your hair, which can be achieved with a styling gel or curling iron. Be sure to research and look up tutorials for inspiration. Countless makeup artists and hair stylists specialize in costume makeup and hair; you can learn a lot from them. If you need more confidence in your makeup and hair skills, consider hiring a professional to help you. Many salons and makeup artists offer special costume packages, and they can help you create a truly stunning look that will turn heads at the party. Enjoying the process is the key to successful costume makeup and hair. Conclusion Attending a costume party is a great way to have fun and be creative. Finding inspiration, choosing the right pieces and accessories, incorporating personal style, and accessorizing are all essential when creating a chic costume. Remember to have fun, exude confidence in your outfit, and use accessories to elevate your look. Read the full article
“History is the interpretation of the significance that the past has for us.”
JOCELYN MONTGOMERY
Age: 39 Gender and pronouns: Female, She/Her Occupation: Bar/Speakeasy Owner Neighborhood: Fishtown
BIOGRAPHY
For as long as she could remember, Jocelyn’s life always held a shroud of mystery to it. All she knew was that she had the coolest thing any kid could have. Her parents owned a soda fountain. Nevermind that on days where she would go down to the shop with Sis she would never see her parents behind the counter creating the best drinks known to man or when she would attempt to sneak into the back to do a taste test of the soda herself. One of her parents always managed to appear just as Jocelyn would push the door to the back open, hoping for that container of ice cream to be left unattended. In her mind, her parents were superheroes or spies disguised as soda fountain owners to throw off the scent of anybody out to get them. Something about not quite knowing what her parents were up to led Jocelyn to developing her own secrets and small adventures, keeping a diary once she was old enough to decipher her own handwriting full of ideas and theories as to what her parents were up to.
The truth didn’t come out until Jocelyn was old enough to work at the parlor herself, finally understanding why her parents would pour themselves into bed in the wee hours of the morning, the way they would meticulously wash their laundry to rid themselves of the smell of alcohol after what were particularly rough days. She ended up working late one night, long past closing and definitely breaking curfew, when she heard the voices clearly. Revelry, a shout of triumph, the distant chatter of something happening in another room. She knew the building they were in was a part of history - what wasn’t in Philadelphia and the long standing belief of ghosts was the only logical conclusion. Except… There were a handful of customers that she could remember coming in and chatting with her mother before they were led to a different area and not coming out. It was worth the risk to sneak around and find out, after all, Jocelyn did need a ride home and as far as she knew, both of her parents were still on the premises.
What she found as she descended a flight of stairs, barely hidden behind the storage rack she rarely paid attention to delighted her. Her parents were keeping a secret from her. A huge secret. Never did she think that the storage rack near the back office would lead to a secret passage that would then take her right back into the prohibition era.  Her parents were running a speakeasy. Her father would tend the bar while her mother would go table to table and tend to customers and chat them up, like it was something they had done for generations. Questions were asked, answers were given and Jocelyn went from having the coolest business as a kid to having the coolest businesses anybody could have. She continued to work the soda fountain through the remainder of high school and the start of college where she took on the double major of business and accounting and a minor in American History. Hell, she was able to experience a vital piece of American history almost nightly as she began to learn the ins and outs of the business.
The business had become Jocelyn’s upon reaching her late twenties, her parents choosing to help out and work for a couple of hours once they had decided to stop working themselves. Still thriving and a revived hit with those looking for a different sort of night scene, the Montgomery Soda Fountain is more than meets the eye.
JOCELYN MONTGOMERY has the face claim of TESSA THOMPSON and is played by DIA.
you can still see the tufts of them. see? if i move my hair enough. tail’s a bit of a stub too. and before you speculate wildly like all of them did, this was my choice. i cut them off.
i’ve been on the run for good reason. that flash drive was something, if lily asked me for help with it.
There’s apparently a rumor that the MCU Blade movie/series is going to be a period piece set in either the 1920s or 1930s. I love this idea so much because:
1) It fits with the comics since Blade has been around since the 1920s.
2) Another period piece! And it’s two decades that haven’t really been explored by superhero media.
3) We can get a callback to the Marvel Noir stuff (you probably know about this stuff through Spider-Man Noir)
4) It’s a great way to highlight the fact that the series is centered on vampires. Eric’s been killing vampires since the Great Depression and he hasn’t aged a day since he’s part-vampire.
5) His meeting with Dane Whitman is made even more significant due to their massive age gaps and the fact that Dane is working with another immortal character.
6) Going back to point 2, if the decade turns out to be the 1920s, think of all the Roaring Twenties stuff that the movie/series can explore. Flappers, jazz music, Harlem Renaissance, speakeasies, etc.. On a more sadistic note, maybe we can get some scenes of Blade killing white supremacist vampires.
7) Since the MCU is known for mixing genres, we can potentially add a new genre to the mix; film noir/hardboiled detective (due to the 1920s/1930s setting).
The Stonewall Riots of 1969
Tumblr media
1) Current State of Being (it was not good, fam, not good)
To set the scene, we’re in the late sixties. We’ve won the second World War, and suddenly everyone’s dealing with the fact that the patriotic frenzy America has been whipped into isn’t really having the same purpose it used to. Thing is, everyone’s still really heated along the basic lines of DEATH TO COMMUNISM AND ALSO COMMUNISTS. During the war, this was helpful. It created a sense of unity. But once the war was over, attention turned inward.
At this time, there was also research that queer people were "sex perverts" and a government report even came out saying
"The lack of emotional stability which is found in most sex perverts and the weakness of their moral fiber, makes them susceptible to the blandishments of the foreign espionage agent [...] the pervert is easy prey to the blackmailer.
This same report also cited a case of a gay man "who's homosexuality was used by the Russians [who were communist] to recruit him as a double agent before world war 1." Basically, the overall gist was that gay people were believed to either be communists now, or they would become communists because their brains were weaker.
Alrighty, but why were they easy prey? First, when it came to communism, they were just as susceptible as anyone else, but after steep laws against queer people were passed, blackmail became pretty real.
So... yeah, let's talk about a couple laws that were in place in the late sixties, shall we?
For the crime of sleeping with a consenting partner in the privacy of your own home you could face anything from:
A light fine
Five, ten or twenty years in prison
A life sentence
Electrical shock therapy
Castration
In addition, to target trans people, police had also dug out a law from the nineteenth century that was originally passed to supress angry tenant farmers who would don disguises and demonstrate against their landlords (law found in subsection 4 of section 240.35 of the New York Penal Code). The law stated that individuals could not wear more than three items of clothing that did not match their assigned gender at birth.If an officer thought you were breaking this law, they could arrest you and take you to a bathroom or similarly private location and have an officer who matched your presented gender either do a strip search or pat you down there to see if things matched.
Things got especially bad when New York realized they’d have to “clean up the place” in preperation for hosting the World Fair. In part, this meant a heavy crackdown on the gay community, and by extention, gay bars.
2) The Genovese Crime Family and Stonewall
At around this time, the Mob was starting to notice that gay bars were an excelent source of profit - since the prohibition era (1920-1933), limited access bars and speakeasies had popped up everywhere and since the gay community already couldn’t be themselves on the streets, they retreated to these more sheltered locations.
Three mafia members decided to open a gay bar because ohhh boy could you rake in some serious profit. Combined, the three of them put up $3500 to “renovate” the Stonewall Inn (which had gone through itterations of being a straight nightclub, straight bar, and gay restaurant in a sort of irregular cycle).
Renovations included building a stage to dance on, painting the walls black, and getting a jukebox. No running water, no fire exit, just the bare minimum. It certainly wasn’t legal.
When they opened (as a bottle club to get around pesky liquor laws), the bouncer would look through a little slat in the door and if you had a codeword or looked sufficiently gay, he’d let you in. You then had to sign up to be a part of the club (about a dollar) and write your name down on a sheet of paper. Of course, no one wrote down their real names.
The liquor in question was stolen, to begin with, and then heavily watered down with... questionably clean water, and then sold at about three times the original price in half-cleaned glasses (glasses were dunked in a bucket and then reused). Since none of the patrons really had high expectations anyway, they went with it. Needless to say, however, Stonewall was not a particularly nice place to be.
With all the money the trio raked in, a cut had to go to the Mafia man who controlled the district, and another cut went to paying of the notoriously corrupt 6th Precinct, to avoid getting the whole place shut down.
Because they were payed off, the police would only conduct their mandated raids early in the night before things got going, and on weekdays - this was when there weren’t a ton of people there, and it was easy to make it look like nothing was amiss.
3) The Raid (this is where shit gets real)
First of all, the thing is - no one knows why it happened. It just.... did.
On June 28th, 1969, at about 2am, the night was in full swing. The bar was crammed full of people dancing and drinking. The air was stuffy as usual and quite dark.
Then the bright flourescent lights come on - the signal that there was a raid and to seperate and to look less gay. The police came through, and called that they were making arrests. Everyone needed to line up against the wall and have their ID’s ready. Of course this was an issue, because just about everyone was legally not supposed to be at stonewall.
As the police began taking people outside, a crowd was going - raids at this time were... unusual to say the least. Some of the queens went into the back of the police cars without much of a fight - obviously they were terrified, but it didn’t look like there was much they could do.
One of them, however, and no one knows who for sure, was having none of this. Though Marsha Johnson and Sylvia Rivera have both been suggested as the starter of the riot, both have denied it, saying it was someone else. Storme DeLarverie, however, has both accepted and denied it was her. In an interview where she confirmed herself as the starter, she described her reaction, saying:
“The cop said ‘Move f****t’, thinking that I was a gay guy. I said, ‘I will not! And, don’t you dare touch me.’ With that, the cop shoved me and I instinctively punched him right in the face. He bled! He was then dropping to the ground - not me!”
She then turned to the crowd and yelled “why don’t you all do something?”
This was when things transformed. Objects started to fly. It was like someone had just punched a hole through the dam holding back the collective anger of the queer community.
A lot of the queer street kids, homeless, desperate, and with nothing to lose, were at the forefront of the fight, throwing anything from stones to pennies to bottles. Here’s the thing: no one really liked Stonewall - it wasn’t particularly nice or inviting or anything like that, but it was THEIRS and they were going to fight like hell for it.
Those being pulled out of the Inn started fighting back too - throwing what they could, kicking, punching, pushing back against the police. Marsha Johnson, a woman some have referred to as “basically a lesbian superhero” even climbed a telephone pole and threw an unidentified heavy object at a police car, shattering the window.
It was chaos and the crowd was still building. The flying objects didn’t stop, and it wasn’t like anyone had great aim - they were just as likely to hit a fellow protester - but there was a sense of comraderie and it made the police nervous. They were calling for reinforcements, but none were coming.
Finally, one of the police chiefs decided they had to retreat into Stonewall. They grabbed a few people as hostages and dissapeared inside, and barricaded the door. The inside of the Stonewall Inn was a wreck. The jukebox had been smashed. Same with the stage, the bathroom mirrors, and the cash register. Broken furniture was strewn on the floor.
Outside, the rioters had yanked a parking meter out of the ground and were trying to bash their way through the door, using it like a battering ram. Each thud made the officers even more nervous, and the captain, realizing things could turn from bad to horrific and deadly commanded his officers not to shoot unless he shot first. He went up to each one, commanding them individually by name, saying that if they shot without his direct sayso, they would be spend the rest of their police careers with only the worst possible jobs. To their credit, no one shot.
Outside, reinforcements finally arrived, armed in full riot gear - helmets, plastic shields, those club/baton things. They came forward in a full on phalanx. Then it started getting really ugly. People ended up lying on the sidewalk with blood coming from their heads or injured in other ways. The crowd started falling back, step by step. Finally, many of them ran.
But not to flee. Instead, they went all the way around the block and came up behind the reinforcement officers. Surprised that there was a new attack coming from behind, it was the police that began to loose the ground, and were forced to retreat back, back, back.
It was into the late, late hours of the night when the riots finally died down to nothing, the last of the crowd finally dispersed, exhausted.
4) The Next Day (aka a giant middle finger to the cops)
The shattered glass sparkled in the morning light the next day - a tribute to what had gone down the night before.
That night, the crowds around stonewall were huge. And it wasn’t just the queer community - the anti-war protesters and Black Panthers had joined in, standing against the even larger ranks of officers. The night before was a tipping point, but if momentum was to keep going, there needed to be sustained effort.
Inside, the Inn was back to normal. The Mafia had repaired the stage, gotten a new cash register, and even replaced the jukebox. It was if the efforts of the police had never even happened. Throughout the night, the queer community went in and out as though everything were totally normal - as if the police didn’t matter.
The riots were even worse than the night before, but the police couldn’t gain any ground.
Despite what was happening and the triumphs of the queer community, the press was a little less enthusiastic, aiming to diminish what had happened, taking the viewpoint of the police, or claiming the riots happened because of a celebrity’s death, and not the decades upon decades of oppression.
5) The Impact (how we got to today)
A year later, a lot of the Stonewall participants gathered to commemorate the movement. There were now several activism groups that had grown since the riots, but there needed a way to keep it growing - keep the flame from dying out.
One woman proposed that they have a march like the Civil Rights movement and Anti-war protesters were having. As soon as the question filled the space, there was unanimous consensus. Yes - they were to march.
It was terrifying. One member remembered fearing that only ten or so people would show up - that it was only going to make them into a laughingstock and nothing more. Indeed, many people had shown up with popcorn to “watch the f*gs” - it was seen almost as a show or performance.
But the moment was anything but. When the member looked back, in apprehension, what he saw wasn’t ten or the anticipated couple hundred people. No more than two thousand people had joined the parade. And not just the queer community - straight New Yorkers were there too. It was a moment of solidarity, and a demand for justice.
Every year since, there have been pride marches around the country, memorium to the community, and to the fight we’ve been fighting for a very long time, and to the patrons of Stonewall Inn who finally decided enough was enough.
