What in the Name? - RTL und das Namensproblem

Markennamen sind wichtig. Das heißt es zumindest immer. Und wenn jemand im deutschsprachigen Raum wirklich dieser Meinung ist, dann ist das die RTL-Gruppe. Ihr erinnert euch vielleicht noch, dass die ihr Streaming Service mitten in der Covid-Epidemie in RTL+ umbenannt haben, damit es nicht nur eindeutig zu RTL gehörig zu erkennen ist, sondern auch als Streaming Service erkenntlich ist, wie Apple+ und Disney+ (nicht, dass Netflix Netflix+ heißen würde oder Amazon Prime Video Amazon+, aber wer wird es denn schon so genau nehmen?). Damals hieß der RTL-Streamer nämlich TVNow. Ursprünglich hatte er RTLNow geheißen, doch das war geändert worden. Und von einem Plus war nirgendwo was zu sehen gewesen. Also schritt man zur Tat. Es gab allerdings das Problem, dass es bereit ein RTL+ gab, nämlich einen normalen Sender der RTL-Gruppe, der etwas weniger aufregendes Programm zu bieten hatte als RTL oder RTL2, aber nichts destro trotz RTL+ hieß. Aus ihm wurde damals RTL Up, weil der zweite Vox-Sender ja auch Vox Up heißt, nehme ich an.

Wie auch immer, seit beinahe einem Monat gibt es wieder einen Namens-Änderung in der RTL-Gruppe, die ihr vielleicht nicht mitbekommen habt oder nicht ernst genommen habt, bis ihr, sagen wir mal, zufällig "Sing!"auf den Sender angesehen habt und festgestellt habt, nein, die meinen das total ernst (leider). Der seit Jahrzehnten als SuperRTL bekannte Kinder-Sender der RTL-Gruppe heißt nämlich seit Mitte August RTL Super. Ja, das habt ihr richtig gelesen, aus SuperRTL wurde RTL Super. Mit der offiziellen Begründung, das bei allen Diensten der RTL-Gruppe RTL vorne stehen soll, damit klar wird, dass man es mit einem RTL-Dienst zu tun hat (nein, diese Erklärung könnte ich nicht erfinden, die ist offiziell). Und der Sender nimmt den neuen Namen auch ernst, denn schon wirbt er nun voller Enthusiasmus für den "Super Film am Samstag". Denn jetzt ist Super ja nicht mehr der Name des Senders, sondern eine Beschreibung deren Inhalte. Doch wer sich jetzt wundert, nein, Toggo heißt nach wie vor Toggo und nicht RTL-Toggo oder so was, zumindest bis jetzt. Soviel also zu der Erklärung, dass RTL immer überall vorne stehen muss (oder überhaupt im Namen sein muss wie im Fall von RTL+).

Übrigens gibt es noch eine witzige Geschichte zum Thema RTL und Namen. Ich habe ja vorher RTL2 erwähnt, nur dass dieser Sender zwar früher so geheißen haben mag, aber schon seit geraumer Zeit nicht mehr so hieß. Genau genommen hieß er ja schon seit den Neunzigern RTL II (wer kann sich nicht an die römische Zwei erinnern, die bis heute im Logo des Senders zu sehen ist?), aber seit Oktober 2019 heißt der Sender eigentlich RTLZwei, weil ... keine Ahnung das Logo so länger ist und besser ins Auge sticht? Diese Veränderung fand ich immer besonders seltsam, war mir aber nie einen Mandela-Effekt wert - in den 2000ern und frühen 2010ern lief auf RTL II durchaus einiges an Serienware, die man sich gerne angesehen hat und mitunter auch aufnehmen musste, weil sie zu spät oder gestaffelt gelaufen ist, daher wusste ich immer, dass das ausgeschriebene Zwei früher nicht vorhanden war, danke vielmals. Dann stand es plötzlich da, und wie man siehst war es zeitlinientechnisch der Anfang des Umbenennungswahns der RTL-Gruppe, der RTL+ und RTL Up und jetzt RTL Super nach sich zog.

Was kommt als Nächstes? Wie gesagt vermutlich erwischt es Toggo als Nächstes, immerhin steht in diesem Namen ja nichts von RTL drinnen. Andere Kandidaten sind natürlich Vox (und Vox Up) sowie n-tv, die ja auch alle nichts von RTL in ihren Namen zu sehen haben. Nur in was die alle umbenannt werden sollen, das weiß keiner. Oder vielleicht ist ihnen zwischendurch mal wieder fad im Hirn und sie benennen RTLZwei um in RTLZwo. Dümmer kann es ja immer werden.

Ob das Ändern von Namen dazu beiträgt Quoten oder Abonnenten zu gewinnen sei dahin gestellt. Im Übrigen bin ich ja der Meinung, dass das Ändern von bekannten Markennamen wie SuperRTL oder TVNow Zuseher eher abschreckt als gewinnt, aber bitte. Die RTL-Gruppe wird schon wissen was sie tut. So wie sie damals wusste warum sie ihr Streaming Service nicht mehr nach ihrem Hauptsender benennen wollten, nur um ein paar Jahre später dahinter zu kommen, dass das wohl ein Fehler gewesen war.

Also vielleicht haben wir Glück und RTL Super hält sich nicht und darf irgendwann mal wieder SuperRTL heißen. Irgendein neuer Marketing Stratege mag vielleicht dahinter kommen, dass das besser so wäre. Und bis dahin haben wir wenigstens lauter Super-Filme dort anzusehen, denn immerhin muss ja alles was auf RTL Super läuft super sein, nicht wahr?

Forever grateful to Toggo/SuperRTL for just putting the entire german dub of Nexo Knights (aside from the 2 special epsiodes, but I don't think they ever aired in germany) on YouTube and the app/website (with the wonky webgames) for free.

I mean, they put most of their shows on the website, but often only some of the episodes and especially on YouTube where they usually only put the peoples favorite episodes. Especially if it's like Dragons rtte or Trollhunters that belongs to Netflix.

But I can just go on YouTube and rewatch it whenever. Disney could never. As soon as a show doesn't give them money they erase it's existence, which makes pirating they only way to watch some stuff.

So yeah, if you understand german, you can watch Nexo Knights on Youtube. Full episodes, no ad breaks in the episode. Only thing is that it's on the YouTube kids mode so there are no comments and you can't scroll through YouTube while watching.

As someone who is very interested in voice actors, and can speak two languages pretty well, it's always fascinating what connections you can build. If I made an Obsidian of characters and Voice Actors and how they are connected I would probably start making conspiracy theories.

But what fascinates me most right now is the German Voice Actor of Micolash from Bloodborne

First of all, Bloodborne and Sekiro are the only Soulsborne games to have received a German dub (that is if you count Sekiro as one because I know some that don't and I am also still mixed on it)

And at that, the Voice Actor of Micolash is someone that I first heard in a game that felt so uniquely bound to Germany that I didn't think he would appear anywhere else

As the Schlüsselmeister (roughly translated to Key Master) in the videogame "Edna and Harvey: The Breakout" ("Edna bricht aus" in the original German). A game made by the company Daedelic that used to be known for beautiful German Point and Click Adventures but now is sadly most known for creating the awful videogame Gollum, though I wouldn't blame them, I doubt they were the ones who forced themselves to try and make a Triple A game with a team that is far too small for that.

The Schlüsselmeister in Edna The Breakout was in this game where you played someone escaping from an Asylum, the only character in this Asylum who felt like if they got out they would be an actual danger to the world. I think they would fall into the definition of a Sociopath, but as someone who also experiences mental illness in ADHD, I don't just want to throw around terms

The voice actor did impressive work and went on to appear in other Daedelic games but also outside of that. And when I discovered he was the incredibly annoying boss Micolash, Host of the Nightmare, from Bloodborne I was fascinated because Micolash is a man so very very mad in the head you would think he wants to become one of the eldritch gods that cursed this world himself. I like to joke that he wants to get in bed with them. But this man talks in such an eccentric way and straight up howls like a Wolf with delight, as a Werewolf fan, I am FASCINATED. If you put me in the world of Bloodborne I'd either join the Werewolves or become the next Micolash, I am far too easily corrupted by the idea of being some eldritch horror

Now that's not where the fun ends. The voice actor has one more role that I cannot forget about. Heisenberg in Resident Evil Village! The Werewolf of the most recent Resident Evil game. So we went from Sociopath, to eldritch god fanatic to what may not be an Eldritch monster but is still quite a monster indeed and I must say I can still sense of that Micolash there

So if Micolash wanted to become a Monster, through his VA he technically got what he wanted. That is in the German timeline. I don't remember the English one

Also for those who seriously read this far through my ramblings, another funfact. The German VA of Wolf from Sekiro, is not only also Kratos since the PS4 game, he is also a prominent TV voice, having done many ads and if ad a kid you ever watched the German channels SuperRTL or Toggo (which are technically the same channel) then you have heard him as the announcer of those channels. So Wolf from Sekiro and Kratos from GOW PS4 have told me as a kid when the next episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be on. The connections you can find in voice acting are truly fascinating!

Something kinda funny: when I was younger I tried to watch the star wars movies, I couldn't really get into it. But at the same time there was this animated series I liked and would watch when I stayed at my nana's house, I only found out years later that the show I liked was Star Wars Clone wars, for Years I had no idea the show I used to watch at her house was starwars

I don't know if I ever told that story but my parents used to let us watch Clone Wars on Saturdays when it was on SuperRTL. At some point I asked my mom (who was doing stuff in the living room and didn't pay much attention): "Mom what does execution mean?"

Her: what the hell are you watching

Me: clone wars! :D

Her: ... I thought that was for kids??

We didn't get like. Banned from watching it. But she did stay with us for a bit to make sure it wasn't too violent lmao

Imagine your child goes "mom what is an execution?" (and also that word ONLY means the killing bit in German not like. Performing a task)
