Lessons from Surah Al-Kahf

1. The Power of Faith and Trust in Allah:

The story of the people of the cave (Ashab al-Kahf) highlights the importance of unwavering faith in Allah. These young believers took refuge in a cave to escape persecution, demonstrating their trust in Allah’s protection. Allah rewarded their faith by preserving them for 309 years, illustrating that true faith and reliance on Allah can lead to divine assistance.

2. The Nature of Worldly Life:

The parable of the rich man and the poor man teaches us about the transient nature of worldly wealth and the importance of gratitude and humility. The rich man’s arrogance and ingratitude led to his downfall, while the poor man’s faith and humility were highlighted as virtues. This story reminds us that material wealth is temporary and that our real success lies in our relationship with Allah.

3. Knowledge and Humility:

The encounter between Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr (a wise servant of Allah) underscores the value of seeking knowledge and maintaining humility. Despite Musa’s status as a prophet, he learns from Khidr that divine wisdom can be beyond human understanding. Back to classes for 2 more weeks before winter break starts! I forgot how tiring teaching is lol by the time its 6 PM I start getting soooo sleepy. I need to start incorporating naps into my day again! In the meantime I've slipped back into my old habits and am spending my time alternating between a 100 episode family drama and a whole 1.5 hr video that I'm translating. I am so acutely aware that I am doing this to drown myself in work and to distract myself from reality but I really can't sit still and do nothing D:

The plan for today + this weekend - check assignments for all classes from when I was sick - make review sheet for 6th grade - read surah Kahf - prepare for interview (!!) - lesson plans for next week - call + check up on some kids - finish translating + upload video - go outside (cries)

🌺 Allah says: ❛Alhamdulillah, Who has sent down to His servant [Muhammad ﷺ] the Book (i.e. the Qur’an), and has not placed therein any crookedness.❜ 【Surah al-Kahf 18:1】

The word {Alhamdulillah} means all praise and gratitude are to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. In the Qur’an, Allah often highlights a specific matter for us to internalise and ponder, and thereupon that reflection, sometimes the word that should come out from our mouth is: Alhamdulillah.

In this aayah, Allah says that there is no room for any deviation in the Qur'an. No matter how political, ideological, economy, technology, fashion, society’s values, or culture changes — one thing will not change — and that is the Qur'an. Its principles and truth are straight and clear as how it was first revealed.

Because when humanity dictates what is normal, the common standard will always deviate. What used to be detested and unacceptable before, has now been accepted as normal today. Allah says in another surah:

🌺 ❛If you obey the majority of those on earth, they will make you lose the way of Allah.❜ 【Surah al-An'am 6:116】

Alhamdulillah, Allah teaches us through His Book that we’re not among those who keep changing our standards when the world changes.

Alhamdulillah, we are freed from slavery to worldly trends, and from accepting what is filthy and corrupt as normal.

Alhamdulillah, Allah has removed these worldly shackles for us. True freedom is to truly be freed from all these false attachments, and to rely solely on our Creator. Rasulullah salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

🌺 ❛Islam began as something strange, and it will return to being strange (meaning, only a few believers will adhere to its teachings), so give glad tidings to the {ghuraba’ | strangers} (i.e. the ones who truly adhere to the Deen).❜ [Sunan Ibn Majah 3986 | Graded Sahih]

So as believers, do not be embarrassed for holding tightly to the Deen, and do not seek honour and success from everything else other than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and His religion. May Allah make us amongst the ghuraba’.

Surah Al-Kahf, a chapter filled with timeless حكمة (wisdom) and profound lessons, offers invaluable guidance for our lives. Let us explore some of the key lessons and stories it contains:

1️⃣ Faith and Steadfastness in Challenging Times: The story of the أصحاب الكهف (Companions of the Cave) teaches us the importance of إيمان (faith) and استقامة (steadfastness) in the face of trials and tribulations. These righteous young men sought refuge in a cave, and Allah blessed them with a معجزة (miracle) sleep that preserved their faith and inspired generations.

🔑 Lesson: The story emphasizes the importance of faith, صبر (patience), and seeking توكل (reliance) in Allah during challenging times. It reminds us that استقامة (steadfastness) in our beliefs can lead to unimaginable blessings.

2️⃣ Gratitude and Humility in the Face of Wealth: The parable of the حديقتين (Two Gardens) highlights the transient nature of worldly possessions. A wealthy man boasted about his كُفر (abundant) gardens without acknowledging Allah's blessings, and his gardens were eventually destroyed.

🔑 Lesson: This parable reminds us to have شكر (gratitude) for our نعمة (blessings) and recognize the حقيقة (true reality) of prosperity. It teaches تواضع (humility) and cautions against being blinded by the غلبة (dominance) of material wealth.

3️⃣ Seeking Knowledge and Humility: The encounter between Prophet Moses (Nabi Musa) and Al-Khidr reveals the importance of seeking knowledge and maintaining humility. Musa learns from Al-Khidr, a servant of Allah, and is tested in his patience and understanding.

🔑 Lesson: This encounter teaches us the value of knowledge and the humility required to learn from those who possess deeper wisdom. It reminds us that there are hidden dimensions to events and situations beyond our limited understanding. It encourages us to be open-minded, patient, and humble in our pursuit of knowledge and to recognize that true wisdom comes from Allah alone.

Reflections from Surah Kahf - 10

In verse number 45, Allah Almighty has revealed the reality of life in this world. Allah Almighty states that the life of this world is like a garden. When Allah sends rain, the garden blossoms, the greenery flourishes, and the grass grows everywhere. Colorful flowers bloom in abundance.

Then, when there is a period without rain, the same garden withers due to the intensity of the heat. The grass, trees, and leaves start wilting. Eventually, the grass dries up completely, and only its particles remain. Even those particles are carried away by the wind.

Have you seen beautiful gardens in spring? Do you think they will ever wither away? No! They are so beautiful that we forget they will also come to an end.

Then, right before our eyes, the season of autumn arrives, and those flowers, trees, and plants shed their leaves. They come to an end.

This life is also similar. It flourishes with Allah's mercy and rain, and spring blooms everywhere. And we, as humans, get lost in the deception of this spring and forget that the season of autumn will also come.

We get lost in the same spring where our time comes to an end, and we don't even realize it.

This is the reality of this world...

This is the truth of the things that are bestowed upon us in this world.

The people we love, our youth, the possessions we accumulate, they all seem beautiful in the beginning, but with time, they also start to show signs of aging, they break, they die, they leave us...

Allah Almighty is teaching us the lesson here that no matter how beautiful this world may be, no matter how precious our possessions may be, all of this is temporary. It will all come to an end.

The Poison of Envy: Trusting in Allah's Wisdom

Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem.

Envy (Hasad) is indeed a destructive emotion, one that can consume a person and lead them toward feelings of resentment and hatred. It often occurs when we see someone receiving blessings or provisions that we don't have, and we start questioning: "Why them and not me?" This burning feeling, the desire to see another's blessing disappear, is the root of envy.

We see this destructive emotion in the story of Qabil (Cain) and Habil (Abel). Qabil became envious of his brother Habil when Allah accepted Habil’s sacrifice but not his. This envy led Qabil to murder his own brother. Allah recounts this event in the Qur'an:

"فَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ قَتْلَ أَخِيهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ" "So his soul prompted him to kill his brother, and he killed him and became among the losers." Quran 5:30

Envy drove Qabil to commit a heinous sin. This shows the extent to which envy can corrupt the soul. Now, let's reflect on another major incident of envy in the story of Adam (alaihi as-salam) and Iblis. When Allah commanded the angels and Iblis to prostrate to Adam, Iblis refused out of arrogance and envy. Iblis believed he was superior to Adam because he was made of fire while Adam was made of clay:

"قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ" "[Iblis] said, 'I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'" Quran 7:12

Iblis couldn't tolerate the honor given to Adam (alaihi as-salam), and his envy led him to disobey Allah. In both stories—Qabil and Habil and Iblis and Adam—the underlying sin was envy, a feeling of being unworthy of someone else's blessings, and in turn, questioning Allah's wisdom and justice.

Now, reflect on the logic behind envy. When you see someone who has been blessed—whether with beauty, wealth, intelligence, or success—you may start questioning: "Why them? Why not me?" You begin to feel entitled to their blessing and, like Iblis, you use your own logic to justify your feelings. But who are we to decide who deserves what? It is Allah who allocates provisions and blessings:

"إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيَقْدِرُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِ خَبِيرًا بَصِيرًا" "Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed, He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing." Quran 17:30

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, gives what He knows is best for each of us. Sometimes, we may not understand why someone else receives a particular blessing while we don't, but this is where Tawakkul (trust in Allah) comes into play.

The Story of Khidr and Musa (Alaihi as-Salam):

A beautiful example of this is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Prophet Musa (alaihi as-salam) was shown incidents by Khidr that initially seemed unjust. One such event was when Khidr repaired a wall in a village where the people had refused to offer them any hospitality. Musa (alaihi as-salam) questioned why Khidr would help such people. Khidr explained that beneath the wall was a treasure belonging to orphans, and by fixing the wall, he was protecting their inheritance until they were old enough to claim it:

"وَأَمَّا ٱلۡجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلَـٰمَيۡنِ يَتِيمَيۡنِ فِي ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحۡتَهُۥ كَنزٞ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَـٰلِحٗا" "As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them; and their father had been righteous..." Quran 18:82

This story teaches us that Allah's wisdom is beyond our comprehension. While we may see someone receiving blessings and wonder why, the reality could be something we are not privy to. Just like the people in the village, we might think someone undeserving is getting something good, but in reality, Allah has a hidden reason that benefits others or serves a greater purpose.

Lessons from the Story of the Quraysh and the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam):

The Meccan Quraysh refused to accept the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) partly because of their envy. They could not accept that someone from among them—not from the wealthiest or most powerful tribes—was chosen as the final messenger of Allah. They asked, "Why him? Why not us?" But Allah chose Muhammad (peace be upon him) because of his purity of heart and truthfulness, qualities far more important than wealth or status.

"وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَرۡيَتَيۡنِ عَظِيمٍ" "And they said, 'Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?'" Quran 43:31

Like Qabil, they questioned Allah’s wisdom, which only led to their downfall. If only they had accepted the Prophet’s message, they would have received immeasurable blessings.

How to Combat Envy:

When you feel the burning sensation of envy, remember that Allah knows what is best for each of His servants. Instead of letting envy take root, do what the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised:

Make du’a for others: If you see someone with a blessing, make du’a for Allah to increase them in that blessing. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“If any one of you sees something in his brother that pleases him, let him pray for blessing for him, and not envy him.” (Ibn Majah)

The angels will pray for you: When you make du’a for others, the angels respond by making the same du’a for you. This is a win-win situation—your heart stays pure, and you receive blessings as well.

Tawakkul: Trust that Allah is the best planner, and that whatever you have is exactly what you need to succeed in this world and the next.

"وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ" "And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him." Quran 65:3

Remember that Satan is disappointed: Every time you resist envy and pray for others, you

are disappointing Shaytan, who thrives on creating jealousy and hatred among people. By staying content and making du’a for others, you not only protect your heart from the poison of envy but also bring peace to your soul.

Envy is an emotion that can lead to destructive behavior, just as it did with Qabil and Iblis. However, Islam teaches us to combat envy by recognizing that Allah is the best planner and that He alone decides who receives what. Instead of questioning Allah’s wisdom, we should place our trust in Him, remain content with what we have, and pray for others to receive more blessings. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves from the harmful effects of envy but also draw closer to Allah and invite His mercy into our lives.

The next time you feel the stirrings of envy, make du’a for the person, and remember that what Allah has given them does not diminish what He can give you. Trust that Allah’s plan is the best for you, and He knows exactly what you need in this life and the hereafter.

So what lessons can we take from chapter Al-Kahf? There are too many to put in one article. Or dare I say, too many lessons for even one person to extract all of them. Every time we read the chapter, we will find new lessons.
