Birthdays aren’t a bummer with you by my side

Chapter summary: In honor of Leo's birthday I made an excerpt, it can be seen as a stand alone or apart of the Chispo and Bruja series Warnings: Slight angst Word count: 1083

Leo sighed in relief.

The clear blue waves pushed against Piper’s surfboard— that he was temporarily borrowing—making him bob through coast lazily. 

The fresh salty air blew through his curls. The seagulls squawked in the distance. And the sun slowly started to sink into the horizon.

It was calm.

The whole day Leo and his friends had a beach day. It was non-stop fun in the sun.

First thing they did was make sandcastles along the shore. Harley and Nyssa had the best one. Annabeth and Hazel were a close second— since the low tide came in and knocked half the castle off.

When it got hot enough they played chicken. Jason and Percy were tag teaming pretty well, lasting about three rounds. Coach called the shots, making sure it was fair game. He declared Reyena and Frank the winners for knocking them down.

Then they played hooky with the waves. Diving into them when they’d come crashing by. Percy lasted the longest underwater—although it wasn’t really fair with him being the son of Poseidon and all. So they called it a tie with Breisa and Nico.

Later as the waves crash in stronger, Piper attempted to teach Jason, Breisa, and Leo how to surf. Of course they all wiped out by just standing on the board. Piper had laughed but encouraged them to keep going. Leo had learned some of the basics, just enough to keep him afloat. He was not confident enough to challenge Poseidon at his own game. Breisa had only been knocked off the board a couple of times. And Jason could not surf for the life of him. But he was cool with that.

Now everyone stood by the bonfire, closer to the shore. They were drying off while roasting hotdogs and eating s’mores. While Will strummed his guitar to classic summer songs, mostly playing reggae. Will wanted to prove they were the best summer songs. He turned out to be right. Everyone looked at ease and either sun kissed or sunburned (sucks for Nico and Jason).

Leo opted to go back into the water to watch the sunset. So here he was.

 Everything felt great. He can’t complain.

‘Quit lying to yourself’ His brain grumbled.

Ok maybe everything wasn’t so great. 

Because today wasn’t just a casual summer day. 

His friends hadn’t spontaneously planned a beach day. It was for a birthday. Leo’s birthday. 

They surprise him with this outing. To make up for before. They couldn’t celebrate it because …well demigod business and everything had been stressful on their minds. 

Not that Leo minded, he didn’t really pay attention to his birthday. Not since his mom passed. 

It wasn’t that he didn’t love his birthday. Just too many painful memories for him to enjoy it.

So every year since her passing, Leo wouldn’t be boasting about it. 

But Breisa found out about his birthday. She was bummed that she missed the previous one. So she planned this whole get together. 

That’s another reason why he didn’t steer the party away. He was touched by the effort she put in for him. 

But it felt weird to be celebrated and given all this attention. He was happy but…Why was he so guilty and not feeling just as excited like everyone else was?

“Needed a minute to get away?” Breisa's voice came from beside him. 

He turned to see her swimming up to him. 

“Yeah.” Leo answered softly, “Nothing against everyone else. I’ve been having fun and all. Sometimes it’s just—”

“Too much?” Breisa finished. 

“Exactly.” He sighed without saying anything more, but Breisa knew better.

“Drachma for your thoughts?” She asked, leaning onto the board. 

The waves rocked them up and back gently as Leo tried to place his racing mind together. 

“I…I am happy. But it feels weird to be this happy.” He confessed. 

“What do you mean, Chispo?” She tilted her head and her wet curls fell over her shoulder. She glowed with magic golden-orange color. 

“Like I don’t deserve all this.” He ran his hands through his hair, “I don’t deserve my friends. I don’t deserve this party. Or these gifts. I don’t deserve—” He almost said “you”, but caught himself. “I just…I don’t know why I am feeling like this. It’s my birthday. I shouldn't be feeling weird about being happy.”

Breisa splashed him with water without warning. 

“What the hell was that for?!” He sputtered. 

“To snap you out of your self-deprecating thoughts.” She huffed, “You put yourself down too much. And I don’t think that’s fair to you at all. You saved the world twice. You saved Jason, Piper, and me an abundance of times. You’re literally a mechanical engineer genius. And all that stuff that happened — we could have never survived without you. Leo, you deserve to be happy. Even if you can’t see it yourself.”

If he wasn’t blushing during her rant, he sure was now. 

“Leo hair.” She pointed up to his aflame curls. 

He quickly dunked himself in the water. And was embarrassed as he resurfaced.

“Perdón.” Leo muttered while swatting at his hair, making sure it was out. He hesitated but said “Do you really mean all that stuff?”

Breisa hopped onto the board and placed her hand on his, “Por supuesto, chispo.” 

Leo smiled with this warmth in his chest. “I dunno what I do without you knocking some sense into me.”

“Probably dropped dead.” She joked. 

He snickered, “Don’t sell me short, brujita. I’m a mechanical engineering genius.”

“”Aye dioses.” Breisa shook her head while smiling. “No seas tan galito.”

“You love it.” Leo wagged his eyebrows. 

Breisa sighed, “Yes your massive ego is something I find very attractive.” She instantly regretted the words that came out of her mouth.

Leo grinned wide and prideful. “You think I’m attractive.”

She blushed and her magic aura turned a violet pink.“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” 

“Huh uh.” Leo hummed, “Then why are you still holding my hand?”

“Shut up.” Breisa didn’t let go of his hand and rested her head on his shoulder.

“Whatever you say, Brujita.” Leo squeezed her hand. 

They watched the sun sink low into the night. Then made their way to everyone else for roasted hot dogs, s’mores, and other treats.

Maybe before Leo never got to enjoy his birthday. But with Breisa and everyone by his side—he could make peace with it. He could enjoy and celebrate himself. And maybe that wouldn’t be so bad.

Demigods + careers

Percy:

Percy goes to college in New Rome and ends up studying business (to everyone’s surprise), he then uses his degree to set up a surf school that actually ends up doing pretty well.

He turns out to be a really good teacher and explains stuff in a way that’s easy to understand. Also his powers come in handy when a student needs a bit of help (he has to be subtle about it around mortals though).

Annabeth:

She obviously goes to university in New Rome to study architecture. Naturally she has a job offer from a good firm by the time she finishes and makes a name for herself working there until she sets up her own architecture firm.

It doesn’t take long for her to become well known both in the demigod and mortal world and she’s built structures that will stand for centuries. Of course her schedule is super busy and she travels a lot but Percy’s is quite flexible as he owns his own business so he normally comes with her.

They both make sure to take some time off in the summer to help the new demigods at camp HB.

Leo:

He’s not that interested in college so goes travelling instead. He country hops around the world, fixing cars and stuff to earn money wherever he goes. This gives him some valuable time to cope with Jason’s death and figure out who he is outside the Argo ii.

While he knows his inventions could make him a billionaire, he decides to only ever give his designs to Camp Half-Blood or Jupiter. Instead he sets up his own machine shop in honour of his mother. It’s nothing fancy on the outside but of course Leo has filled it with all sorts of secret tunnels and contraptions. The entire building seems to be alive and it becomes a popular destination for young demigods to visit on quests or for children of Hephaestus/Vulcan to work when they need a bit of money.

Frank:

Frank is probably the most surprising out of the Argo ii crew. He reveals a love for books after finishing his time as praetor and goes to study literature at college.

By the time he turns 25, he has released his first novel. While not directly exposing the demigod world, it is clear that he has taken inspiration from some of his experiences on quests and at Camp Jupiter. The book becomes a bestseller and jumpstarts his career as a successful author.

Hazel:

Hazel turns out to be really good at crafts, she uses her powers to find precious gems and makes jewellery with them. She starts selling them while doing an art course at New Rome university, it feels good to be able to do something positive with her powers.

After finishing her degree, she sets up her own little studio, selling her prints and paintings. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and magazines. She is often praised for her realistic paintings of dangerous animals, it’s as if she’s drawing them from life.

Piper:

Piper struggles a lot in her late teens/early 20s. She’s still getting over Jason’s death and was never that great at school anyway so she ends up dropping out. She’s really into political and social issues so does a lot of protesting but after she gets arrested too many times her dad refuses to keep bailing her out.

After a while she ends up working at Percy’s surf school, which she is good at and enjoys but doesn’t really love. She’s also great at photography so sometimes sells her prints but doesn’t want to follow it as a career because it seems too similar to what her dad does. Throughout her life she’s felt kind of useless and now she’s starting to think she’s just never gonna find a career that suits her but then she starts talking to Sally.

Sally can tell Piper’s struggling and goes into full mom mode. They do loads of research and start looking into careers related to activism. So she starts doing social work and starting her own (more legal) activism group. She really loves it and is naturally great at it as she’s has a knack for rallying support and persuading people.

Reyna:

Reyna also has a hard time finding a career that works for her. After finishing her time in the Roman legion she feels pointless and weak, she’s no longer a praetor and she doesn’t know what to do.

She gets a degree in law but turns down an offer from a big law firm because it doesn’t feel right. So she joins the army and quickly gets promoted to a high ranking position due to her leadership and combat abilities but, compared to demigod wars, mortal wars seem pointless and unjust.

After quitting the military, she starts to take an interest in politics and ends up running for governor. She wins and enjoys being back in a leadership role and being in a position to make change. So she begins working her way up in the political world and combating political issues from within.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side

I've noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So I’ve been thinking about aspects of Will’s personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solace’s canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.

There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote

Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the camp's best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.

To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless he's, as Nico puts it, "under fire." In other words, the intense side of his personality doesn't come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.

Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nico's health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nico's shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nico's dire state.

"Coach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You can’t try that again."

"I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine."

"No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders."

Will is a healer. When he touches Nico's hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nico's being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasn't cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nico's life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.

Will is a calming prescence. He's a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.

He's one of the few people who's able to calm Clarisse's violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.

Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. "What about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It would’ve been nice if you’d foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didn’t break down when we needed it most!"

Rachel’s face turned as red as her hair. "That’s hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apollo’s gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it –"

"She’s right." Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. "Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel."

One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.  

But he knew it wouldn’t do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.

Will Solace saved the day.

He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.

"DON’T BE STUPID!" Will yelled. "LOOK!"

People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they can't wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.

And that's Will Solace's strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.

Will is a difficult character to write. There's a lot of dueling factors with his personality. He's calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. He's fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. He's laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. He's insecure but not melodramatic. He's very caring and protective but not pushy.

Will's personality confuses Nico sometimes too.

He’d always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.

The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.

Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesn't take things too seriously. He's able to alleviate Nico's moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a "dork" because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, he's able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percy's personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Will's soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. He's a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.

The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)

It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didn’t appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.

“Are—are you amused?” I demanded.

Will shrugged. “Well, it’s either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-old—”

“Sixteen,” I corrected. “Let’s go with sixteen.”

“A sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing arts—which I got from you—I still can’t figure out how to fix you.”

“There is no fixing this,” I said miserably. “I am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!”

Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. “Meg seems cool. She’s already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.”

The fiercer side of Will's personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesn't get more forceful than he has to.

Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.

1. He's insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.

"I agree," Will said. "I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war." He looked down at his own hands with distaste. "Unfortunately, I’m just a healer."

2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.

“I got it reattached,” Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. “I need somebody to keep him stable.”

I pointed to the woods. “But—”

“I know!” Will snapped. “Don’t you think I want to be out there searching too? We’re shorthanded for healers. There’s some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!”

I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.

3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.

Will laughed under his breath. “I’m terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Let’s get you on your feet."

Here's a second example.

I rested my hand on Will’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back by dawn.”

His mouth trembled ever so slightly. “How can you be sure?”

4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.

Nico rested his hand on Will’s shoulder. “Apollo, we were worried. Will was especially.”

In conclusion, Will Solace's personality is difficult to get correct. But don't worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee he'll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.
