book excerpt - intro scene (ch. 1)
Fin stared blankly at the neon green cocktail sitting on the glass bar in front of him. The bass of the unsettling, unfamiliar electronic music blaring from the club’s speakers vibrated the entire room. He felt it in his heart. He sat there as the walls themselves pounded, watching the ripples eddy across the surface of his drink, never once tasting it.
The Mortal Continent was a very strange, dark place. He had only been here for two weeks – hadn’t even made it north of Belham, the southernmost port city – and already he’d been stabbed by a rogue street needle, robbed twice, and propositioned for sex more times than he had bothered to count. He wasn’t sure what in the name of the two suns he’d gotten himself into.
It’s not as if he was helpless; he was huge. Somehow, this had not proved to be much of a deterrent against the ballsy Mortals prowling about this city. He wondered if all Mortal cities were like Belham or if it was an anomaly. He had to assume that the three major Mortal cities all operated similarly, seeing as the Governors of each region sat on the same Council. Fin had been sent to the Mortal Continent to gain an audience with the Eceon Council, but first he needed some intel. Having lived away from the Mortal population for more than three of their generations, the Fae were incredibly disconnected from their way of life. He needed to learn how Mortals operated, how they governed themselves, the types of technology they had access to – once he understood them better, only then would it be safe to ask them for help.
It was this train of thought he was lost in when a lithe, glistening frame sidled up next to him, filling his Fae senses with the overwhelming stink of a false-smelling vanilla. He wrinkled his nose.
“I’ll have what he’s having,” she yelled to the bartender over the music, gesturing to Fin. Fin tried not to roll his eyes. Not this again. Wishing to avoid any sort of transaction with this Mortal woman, he abandoned his drink entirely, stalked across the dance floor, and swept out of the building into the frigid sky streets of Belham.
The city was remarkable at night, he could grant the Mortals that at least. Visibly filthy and overcrowded during the day, the city transformed into an enchanting kaleidoscope of neon lights once the suns set. The skyscrapers always loomed high, their tips shrouded by a mysterious fog. But at night, their towering facades twinkled with bright purples, greens, reds, and blues – advertising everything from greasy kebabs and diet cola to virtual companions and perpetual boner pills. Mortals were an interesting breed, indeed.

surface of eceon | "the grasshopper king" | the king beneath the mountain | 2001 yes, i knew that surface of eceon was tied to yume bitsu. and yes, i really like yume bitsu. but when i saw adam forkner’s side projects’ names (surface of eceon, white rainbow) both my anti-new-age and anti-cheesy-electronica radars alerted and i resisted. to be fair to myself, how many gay-wad electronica compilations are out there with bands with names like “empathy wave”, “luna sol”, “astralasia” or “voodoo warriors of love”? plus, there is a lot of talk of crystals and positive energy and such coming from mr forkner. but in the end, i have to admit that i judged this book by its cover. (i've been guilty of this before.) recently, i read an interview with mr forkner on pitchfork’s web site that made it seem like the whole new age thing was tongue-in-cheek. the possibility of it being a joke (even if it turns out not to be) gave me an excuse to try it out. and what do you know? i love it.
