🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.
Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.

never felt so femininely empowered by a man as when hozier described women’s bodies as “the gateway to the world” and said we belong to neither religion or men

I’m thinking about how Wasteland, Baby was a call to action and a tongue-and-cheek acceptance of the end of the world. And how Eat Your Young and Unreal Unearth are about the nine circles of Hell, about the afterlife, about the consequences after death. I’m thinking about one album cover being under water and another being buried under earth, about NFWMB “ain’t it like thunder under earth the sound it makes”, about Unreal Unearth and unearthing something, un-burial, about Like Real People Do “what did you bury before those hands pulled me from the earth.”
I’m thinking Eat Your Young, about Kronos’ mythology, about hunger for and to keep power, about gluttony. I’m thinking about Swan Upon Leda, about the lust Zeus had for Leda, about the greed of man over bodies, about who is the sinner. I’m thinking about angels, about their lack of power in Swan Upon Leda “could never belong to angels”, about their fall from grace in the “Unknown” song “I thought you were like an angel/going unknown as any angel/you called me angel.”
I’m thinking about Hozier.

So you're telling me Swan Upon Leda isn't even on the new album? That song was just a free-range bombshell of emotional devastation and unearthed generational trauma and that's it? He just fucked off to make a whole separate, unrelated album? Will I never have closure from that song??

I know these little easter eggs in hozier’s latest album cover tease probably mean something different but the references to these past songs are making me feel sooooooo unhinged

Reminder:
In "Swan Upon Leda" by Hozier, he compared the rape of Leda by Zeus to the plight of the Palestinians:
"Swan upon Leda Empire on Jerusalem... Occupier upon ancient land"
The song was originally about rape and abortion rights but I think it covers the current genocide going on as well.
Stay strong, Palestine. We are with you.

Transcription of Andrew's letter!
I just wanted to send out a small message of Love and Gratitude, and to be the first to let you know that my new E.P. "Eat Your Young" will be released on the 17th of March, a few weeks from now. The E.P. will contain 3 unreleased tracks "Eat Your Young", "All Things End" and "Through Me (the flood)".
This will mark the first release of 2023, with a number of songs to drop over the coming months followed by the full album "Unreal Unearth" in late summer.
The body of work will follow the journey of the last few strange years in a loose and playful path of nine circles. There is much I would share here but I feel it best to leave you with my deep and sincere thanks for your support and patience both now and throughout my whole career.
THANK YOU
The announcement of shows will begin in the coming days, and I so look forward to the prospect of seeing your faces in person again soon...
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a listen of circles three and six come March 17th.
All my love and thanks,
Andrew / Hozier

i’m sorry i realize i don’t talk about music that much on here but i just have to say HOW THE FUUUCKCK do i not see more people talking about swan upon leda by hozier. THAT IS THE MOST STUNNING SONG IVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. EVERY TIME IT COMES ON SHUFFLE ON MY PLAYLIST I HAVE TO STOP EVERYTHING IM DOING, PUT BOTH EARBUDS IN, TURN THE VOLUME UP TO AN UNGODLY LEVEL, AND JUST SIT THERE AND CLOSE MY EYES AND ABSORB IT. I WANT THAT SONG INJECTED INTO MY VEINS. AND ITS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. it’s not just the sound, even the lyrics are incredible!! they’re so poignant and meaningful and i highly recommend reading about it and anyways this is one of my absolute favorite hozier songs ever and i’m gonna need to see a little more appreciation for it. thanks.
