A Chilly Evening in Amphibia

Anne, Marcy, and Sasha were sitting on the Plantars’ couch, Sasha reading a novel, Marcy journaling, and Anne reading her friends’ books over their shoulders. They were on housewatching duty while the frogs were out on a family excursion.

Rain drummed against the roof. Sasha sighed contentedly. It was nice to get some leisure time in Amphibia, sharing a peaceful moment with her friends. Well, almost peaceful.

“Sashaaa,” Anne whined from beside her. “I’m cold.” A brief gust of wind rushed through the room, making her shiver and scoot closer to Sasha.

Sasha nudged her friend’s arm off her book. “Close the windows,” she suggested.

“Noo, that’ll make the room stuffy.”

“Put on a jacket then.”

Anne turned to Marcy. “Nope,” the dark-haired girl said without looking up from her writing.

“I haven’t said anything yet!”

“You were gonna ask to borrow my hoodie. And the answer is no.” Marcy peered over her journal at Anne, who was now making puppy-eyes at her. “Just close the windows.”

Anne pouted. “Please? Can I borrow it? For five minutes?” Marcy gave her a thoughtful look.

“Hmm. Still nope.” Anne made an exasperated noise as Marcy resumed her journaling.

Anne turned to Sasha again. The blonde shrugged, giving her a small smile. “I’d help you, but this is getting interesting”—

She gestured to her book. — “and I am not putting it down because you’re too stubborn to close the windows.”

Marcy huffed with amusement. Anne groaned. “Mar-Mar, please? You don’t have to take it off, just let me put my fingers in your pockets.” Anne reached over and slid her hands into the large kangaroo pocket in the front of Marcy’s hoodie.

Marcy let out a startled yelp and jerked away from her, dropping her journal and pen into her own lap. “Anne, don’t do that!”

Anne pulled her hands away from Marcy with an apologetic grin. “Sorry, I forgot how ticklish you are.”

“I am not! You startled me, that’s all.” Marcy averted her gaze, face slightly flushed.

Anne gave her ribs a poke, earning herself another started yelp from the girl. Marcy covered her ribs with her journal, barely masking the smile that jumped to her face with a glare. Anne, the scruffy menace, had a wide grin on her face that boded very unwell for Marcy’s ribs. “Anne, don’t,” Marcy warned, without any real threat behind her words.

“Can I borrow your hoodie then?” Anne asked innocently. Marcy glared stubbornly back. She shook her head.

“You know, we could always share the hoodie.”

Marcy was about to ask what that was supposed to mean when Anne slid her hands under the thick gray fabric of her hoodie and started prodding her sides.

Marcy screeched and burst into giggles, shoving at her friend’s forearms. It proved ineffective as Anne’s evil, evil fingers crawled their way up her torso, poking into the gaps between each rib. She crumpled into Anne’s arms, pushing weakly at her elbows as she laughed.

The shirt she was wearing under her hoodie was thin and offered absolutely no protection against the onslaught of wiggling fingers. Between her giggles, Marcy managed to squeal, “Anne, Anne, Anne what are you dohohoing?!”

“Warming up!” Anne was laughing too now, mostly at Marcy’s wild squirming and thrashing. “My hands are warmer already, thank you.”

“You ahahare awful!” Marcy choked out before dissolving into another bout of giggles.

“Thank you again,” Anne replied with a cheeky grin, half-clawing, half-kneading at Marcy’s ribs. She reached down to give her sides the occasional pinch as well, making her friend’s laughter double in volume, Marcy screeching every time her fingers moved to tickle her sides.

Anne chuckled at her friend’s predicament. Until she felt cold fingers digging into her own ribs. She let out a laugh, her fingers stilling for a moment. It was enough for Marcy to get a good grip on her ribs and start tickling furiously.

“Maharcy! I’m sorry!!” Anne squealed through her laughter. She kneaded at Marcy’s hips, trying to startle her into letting go.

Marcy was still managing to claw at Anne’s ribs through her own laughter. “You’ll be sohorry when I’m through with you!”

They wrestled for a few more minutes, each trying to tickle the other into crying uncle.

“Alright you two, as fun as this is to watch, you’re being very loud and distracting and I would like to get back to my novel,” Sasha said over their laughter. “Cut it out, or I’ll personally tickle you to pieces.”

Anne reluctantly withdrew her fingers from under Marcy’s hoodie. Marcy pulled her own hands back as well, still trying to quell her residual giggles.

“Truce?” Anne asked.

“Truce.” Marcy pulled her hoodie over her head and threw it over the both of them, pulling Anne closer to share its warmth.

do you ever think about how polnareff lost his mom young and canonically admits that he has no family back in france, his memory version of sherry says that he'd have done anything for her, one of his prominent memories is buying her an umbrella, and his memory version brings up his regret about one time he flipped at her when they were kids.

and how he initially takes avdol having concern for him as patronizing and how he is very insistent that he's been "alone from the start" and his admittedly extremely inconvenient habit of going off by himself by reflex becomes minimally less funny

having a vague "why am i writing this horrible story?" crisis about the anglo-saxon au fic that has taken over my mind since *checks* about two days ago. i have approx 2000 words of it written so it is going fairly well in that sense but i have gone a bit niche with my fics recently and am starting to think "nobody wants to read this, people will be annoyed at you if you post this" a bit more often, even though they probably won't because it's a free cake and it's rude to complain about free cake.

Just y'know, from a 90s weeb standpoint who saw how fucking obsessed U.S media was with ninja in the 80s and 90s, the earlier TMNT could have stood to be MORE ninja. The newer iterations kinda sorta have gotten "more ninja" instead of generic milk chocolate martial arts with a shiny ninja candy coating

oh man I cannot number order them, to do that would be like picking a favorite cat and they change depending on my mood so like I gotta go with the tier system.

ALSO I never promised anyone here that I had taste, these are my own personal feelings etc etc Mostly I have ranked them based on how much I skim when (or if) I re-read lol

The Vampire Armand- Anne put her whole entire vampirussy into this one like this is the book that has everything!!! There's angst, there's smut, there's cults and kidnapping, there's the beauty and high drama of the Venetian renaissance, what more could you want!! And honestly I think her Armand voice is one of her strongest, right up there with Lestat. You could take an Armand quote out of context and know he's the one speaking. Even my least favorite parts of TVA are still more enjoyable than the best parts of the VC books I don't love.

The Devil's Minion Chapter of QotD specifically - absolute insanity, just banger after banger, not a single word wasted. I could have read an entire novel of this, and again, a unique voice and style! I think this part of the book slaps so hard because it's the first truly modern part of the VC, told from a modern perspective and like. It's so good because every VC reader has probably thought 'wow how exciting would it be to be a vampire's companion/lover' and then Anne actually went and wrote what that would be like. Incredible!

The Vampire Lestat - Getting the back story of the characters introduced in interview is incredible and I feel like Anne finally cut loose and let herself start to be a weirdo with all the world building and entangled relationships. Also just worth the re-read for Armand drop kicking Lestat out of Notre Dame and Marius's insane house of taxidermy and baboons.

Interview with the Vampire- a classic, no other details needed.

Tale of the Body Thief- a polarizing choice I know, but it's such a wild diversion from the typical VC books. Lestat described himself as the James Bond of Vampires and this is the one book that's truly like a tightly written action movie. And Lestat is just so monstrous in it, and in a really complex way- like he's partly reacting to the trauma he went through with Akasha, he's at a low point with self esteem, but then also some of this behavior begs the question of whether being a vampire made him the way he is or whether it's just inherent in him. An underrated VC book tbh.

Blood and Gold- I just love that Anne took on the challenge of writing the life story of a vampire that is thousands of years old. Reading it gives me the same feeling of growing up and realizing that the people you considered 'adults' are just as lost and mentally immature and messed up as you, and never really had any idea what they were doing when child-you thought they had it all together. Also I just love anything that gives me more of the events of Armand's life from another pov.

Queen of the Damned- a great story but I get bogged down by the number of characters and plot lines introduced every time I re-read it, and I end up skimming some of the POVs (or skipping them entirely like baby jenks) I know Anne finally put her foot down and told her editors to fuck off with this one but I wish she'd listened to them just a tiiiiny bit and cut some stuff/expanded other more interesting stuff.

Pandora - Such tight writing!! I wish Pandora hadn't been sidelined in the other books because Anne built such a strong character with her, she deserved better tbh!!

Prince Lestat - it's okay, I just like the sections with my favorite characters and seeing some secondary characters return like Bianca and Allessandra and Antoine. Getting some resolution on what happened with them and where they are closer to the modern day was nice. Also the stuff with Fareed giving Lestat hormones so he could fuck and then get Maury Povich'd eighteen years later was hilarious nonsense, 10/10 Anne insanity. This book just feels like fun trashy vampire stuff (affectionate) in the same way watching True Blood feels like fun trashy vampire stuff, so even if it's not Anne's best work it's still alright imo.

Memnoch the Devil - I simply do not care about God or the Devil or Dora or Rembrandt enough to care about this book, and it only gets ranked below Prince Lestat because I think it drags where PL has a faster pace that allows my brain to skim over the least tasty parts. Really it only makes it to D because of Armand in his dusty jean jacket and Lestat using Dora's uterus as his personal capri sun. Overall though just a slog to get through.

Blood Communion - I just personally do not care for the whole vampire court concept and wish Anne had dropped it after the replimoids. Like I tolerate it in Prince Lestat but ending the series on 'united vampire community' feels off to me when the whole concept of vampires is that they're outsiders struggling with immortality. Also, another kidnapping plot? Anne pls you're better than this.

Merrick - I have erased everything but the Louis bits of this book from my mind. We simply did not need Claudia's vengeful spirit or Louis getting force upgraded and the humanity of him erased by Lestat's ultra-powerful blood but we got it anyways I guess. Very atmospheric though, I do like the return to New Orleans as a setting.

Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis - Cruel of Anne to put Atlantis in the title and give us aliens instead of mermaids. The most cracked out VC book in existence, would only re-read if paid to. I have no words for how much I do not care for this book, especially after reading Anne's notes at Tulane and knowing what could have existed instead.

The Vampire Vittorio - such a flop of a vampire he never even gets mentioned in the other VC books. I do not know this man. This book does not exist to me.
