hrm ok. so personally i think if you try and say that superego was just pretending to have a change of heart at the end of 305 it sorta ruins max’s entire character arc and completely guts the tragedy of the ending? like the entire game has been leading up to the reveal that max is suicidal— he thinks his life has been a waste, he thinks he’s “useless,” his brain is literally trying to kill him. the game is about max’s brain. the devil’s playhouse explicitly equals max’s brain.

but because max would of course never admit to any of his Problems, we need superego to act as an in-between, to be the personification of the part of max that hates himself so badly. the reason his heel-face turn is so effective, then, is because we’re not just seeing superego himself realize that max is worth saving, we’re seeing max realize his life is worth saving. and that sudden desire to live again is exactly why the ending is so tragic. in the end max wanted to be saved, he wanted to live, but he still chose to save sybil and her baby over himself. the moment he realized he wanted to live was the moment he realized he was going to die, but he went through with it anyway.

so what if superego was just pretending? well it kind of just ruins all that huh. max’s sacrifice stops being a selfless act to save someone he cares about at the cost of his own life, and instead becomes something he’s doing seemingly just to push everyone away so they don’t get caught up in his own self-destruction. its hardly a sacrifice at that point; max isn’t giving up his life for sybil because he doesn’t even want his life. so what is the arc there? that max hates himself and continues to hate himself and then dies hating himself? it is just not as tragic or satisfying. nothing was accomplished here. rip to max i guess

also superego’s stated plan was the blow up the northeast right. this would have killed sam and all his friends right. why would he lie about saving max in order to save sam instead if his original plan was to kill them all anyway and nothing in the “superego is lying” scenario would have made him change his mind about exploding. we have no reason to think he was lying about this plan in the first place because max’s brain does in fact explode and would have killed them all had superego successfully kept sam out of max’s brain for long enough, which he was trying very hard to do. where did this 5 paragraph essay about sam and max come from

1. He kind of does? Vaguely. Sometimes certain actions or words make him remember things, but in a hazy way. There ARE a few things he can remember clearly though: the sensation of being shot at, the feeling on his hands that would come from smashing buildings, Sam waving corndogs in front of his face (mainly remembers the frustration of Sam refusing to share), that he lost control of his body and was guided to electrocute himself (pain is a really easy thing to remember, turns out.), And that something happened to Sybil that made him worry. (Sybil is half happy half guilty about this. Because of what she called him.) (ALSO MAX IS UNAWARE OF WHAT SUPEREGO HAD DONE. Or that se even exists)

2. The scales have stopped growing! But they kind of suck.

3. YES a bunch of people fucking hate him now. But pretty much everyone already did what with him being president and all so it's not too different.

So

Geek is a 8 year old kid who invents things in their bedroom, one day, Geek invents a device that makes toys come to life! What better toys to use this device on than all of the toys in Geeks room?

So they do just that, Geek brings all of their favorite toys to life, especially their favorite stuffed animals, Sam and Max. This universe’s Sam and Max are adorable little stuffies, who go on many adventures with the mini time traveling elevator that Geek built themself.

In Geeks bedroom, the neighborhood we all know and love resides, or in this case, a collection of wacky little toys and doohickeys that Geek has collected over the years. The whole cast of characters we all love are reduced to tiny little toys, who all have the smarts of an 8 year old. (Think of a Winnie the Pooh)

Think of this being the most wholesome of the AUs that I’ve made, because plushie Sam and Max just love being the purest of little babies. The only catch to this AU is that all the toys need to keep their sentience secret from geeks unknown parents, but that’s an easy thing to do.

The toys that everyone is: Sybil is a small figure who comes with a dollhouse similar to her shop in the games. Girl Stinky and Grandpa Stinky live in the carry-along diner. Bosco is a ripoff Lego figure who resides in a no-instruction built inconvenience store. Momma Bosco is a brand new barbie doll who Bosco claims is his mother. Flint paper is a beat up action figure who Sam and Max still swoon over. The commissioner is a half torn trading card. Superball is either an armyman toy or an agent action figure. Sammunmak is a (Not historically accurate) kids book about ancient Egypt. Abe Lincoln is a poorly made sculpture project made by Geek for school. And many more toys that I haven’t thought of yet!!

I'm sorry, but I have to yap about this Sam & Max Fullmetal Alchemist AU (Freelance Alchemists I guess) or I'll die <3

WE'RE ANGSTING THE SHIT OUT OF THE GAYS WITH THIS ONE.

Essentially it's Sam & Max characters in the FMA universe, so everything takes place in Amestris.

Instead of them being brothers who fucked up because they wanted their mother back (they have to be gay married in every universe I don't make the rules.) they're in their twenties and depressed as fuck. Basically, they were raising their daughter, Darla, (She probably wouldn't go by the Geek in this au but maybe I'll change my mind later.) but eventually she became ill like Ed and Al's mother.

Then she died. Sorry Geek fans but it's for character development.

Sam and Max are obviously grief-stricken and turn to Alchemy. Human transmutation happens and badabing badaboom Max is left with two missing limbs and a dead husband bound to a suit of armor with his blood. Romantic? Now they get to travel to find a Philosopher's Stone because they can't live without each other.

Girl Stinky and Grandpa Stinky take the place of Winry and Granny, I enjoy the concept of Sam having to watch his husband argue with his automail engineer because he fights like a feral animal.

Sybil would take Izumi's place, I think her learning/teaching alchemy with them would be cute. Until it's not and she dabbles in human transmutation to bring her kid back too. (Have you learned nothing?) Idk about Abe though, I might replace him with Superball because no one likes Abe.

Flint Paper could take Maes Hughes' place, two silly guys that get along with the main characters. I'm sure nothing bad will happen to him :)

The Commissioner would be Roy Mustang, it just feels right. That would also mean he'd be the Flame Alchemist and I don't know how to feel about that.

The short Ed jokes becoming short Max jokes and Sam being mistaken for the state alchemist between the too, it makes too much sense.

Some of the FMA cast would still stick around, they'd just be a bit more unhinged. (Not too much tho.)

I think they would both feel guilty about what happened but Max more so. He'd end up trying to cover that up by acting more cynical/sassy, (think of his Hit the Road characterization) and he'd be a bit smarter than normal due to having to be good enough at alchemy to become state-certified.

Sam would be somewhat the same, mainly to keep Max under control otherwise he'd wreak havoc with the ability to transmute without a circle. I say only somewhat because he'd be more protective of Max after the incident, touch the bnnuy and you'll get hell from both of them. He'd also be the one to convince Max to wear clothes, the state wouldn't let him be an official state alchemist if he just paraded around naked. ("Facist oppressors."/ref)

And yes, Sam would take great offense to the term; "Dog of the military."

Headcanons for silly domestic au

Max doesn’t get much sleep either from the neighbors next-door playing loud music to the trash can randomly exploding (don’t ask why) so sleep is a disaster - Sam handles it and promises to bring back a souvenir (whether it’s an item or a body part that’s up to interpretation .)

Sam made a baby checklist (do’s and dont’s)

Assemble the crib, keep Max away from sharp objects -

Sam also sports his dad look, still wearing his old signature fedora , but his shirt and pants looked like something out of a critically reviewed movie. (Yknow the ones that fold and have those trendy duds?)

My interpretations of the full vice list and puzzle ideas under the cut.

What if instead of taking back Max's parts from the Vices, you had to gather them all up and just kinda... squish them back together?

Wrath- (Right hand) Found in the Blister of Tranquility. Same puzzle as in the game, but instead of cutting off his hand, the spork simply knocks Wrath off the ride. He will then decide that Sam is more fun and violent than just randomly shooting at nothing, and join the party.

Sloth- (Tail) Found on the moon. He's immovable, just as he was in game. You have to gather all the other Vices first and bring them up to the moon. The earthquake maker is used to convince him that cuddling up to Sam would be much more comfortable than laying on the lunar rocks.

Gluttony- (Stomach) Found in Bosco's. Instead of simply handing Jimmy over, let him scurry around the store so Gluttony will give chase. Grab the pile of food he was munching on and leave. Gluttony will quickly run out of things to eat and seek out Sam for more snacks.

Greed- (Left hand) Found outside Lefty's. He's using the old tool rental shop to store his ill-gotten gains, and will mention that it's getting pretty packed in there. Donate a few items to Greed, and he'll run out of space. He will then declare your inventory to be his extra storage space, returning the items you donated and joining the party to keep an eye on "his" stuff.

Lust- (Ears) Found gossiping with Sybil. The easiest Vice to obtain. As soon as he sees Sam, he joins the party and flirts constantly.

Pride- (Heart) Found in the Desoto. He considers himself a superhero of sorts, and thinks of Sam as his sidekick and chauffeur. You'll have to go through a dialogue tree and pick out all the most pathetic options to convince Pride that you need his help solving this case.

Envy- (Left eye) Found in the office, eavesdropping on Flint Paper. Flint is the better detective, so Envy is completely focused on him. To get Envy to start creepily following Sam around instead, you need to call Flint on the office phone and get him to either sing your praises or reveal that he's messed up a case before.

When it comes to ttg, s1 & 2 kinda feel like seasons in a tv series, when s3 is more like a movie at the end of it (The fact that all the episodes take place almost immediately after each other probably helps. Plus the cinematography in s3 is more varied)

I like how in s1&2 each episode kind of has the same structure: you go to Bosco's, you go to Sybil's, you find money for Bosco's invention, (in s2 it's "you go to Stinky's, you go to Pimplecar, though Bosco & Sybil are still there even if they play a different role in the story), you can go and look around the office (even if you can't physically go into the office in 205, you can still poke around Sam's personal Hell replica of it). This is all kind of comforting.

In s3? No. You don't get to go into the office. You don't get to see Bosco, or Sybil (until the finale), or even Jimmy (of course, other characters return from the previous seasons, but these 3 have been there from 101 to 205). There's no comforting location that you visit in all the 5 episodes.

I do appreciate how they shake up the formula. I like how 302 gives you a non-linear story to figure out, and in 303 we first get a completely different interrogation gameplay, then essentially play as Max (even if we're still controlling Sam)

Episodes 301 & 304 are the more "traditional" ones compared to the others, and I like it too, since 301 also introduces Max's powers and new gameplay elements with them, and gives you some time to adjust before throwing you into the next episodes that are even more different. And then 304 is kind of a "calm before the storm", you finally get to play as Sam & Max again after the previous two episodes (technically you still do play as Sam & Max in them, but of course in 302 it's "Sameth & Maximus", and in 303 you're first separated and then Sam is brainwashed so they're not working together, so it's not the same), and it makes you appreciate their dynamic again before separating them for good in 305

SAM AND MAX MERMAID AU1!!11!1!!!1

Ok this is an au ive been wokring on for a while now and im so so so excited to talk about it

SO obv this is like a mermaid au, i have more for it (like sybil granny ruth n papierwaite but this is the art i have 4 now) bc i love love LOVE mermaids!1!!!1 (i made sam and max mermaid pride art but i loved it so much i turned that /j into /srs) SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO

So Sam and Max met at little guppies, like how they met in canon but in the sea, and after Max hospitalized Samʼs bullies with his natural toxins, he and Sam became best friends 4ever. Sam and Max lived in the outskirts of the biggest city in the merfolk kingdom, Samʼs parents left Sam when he was still an egg with Granny Ruth, who is one of the kingdomʼs fiercest n most respected warriors, to move to colder waters in Alaska, where Samʼs family partially originated from. So Sam was raised by Ruth, when Sam was just hatched, his grandfather Leo had died fighting against the humans to protect the kingdom. Max came from a family with loads and loads of kids, (some of which had been either kidnapped or eaten by predators :( ), and probably not a very good home life, so he hung out at Ruthʼs cave with Sam almost every night. As Sam and Max grew up, so did their love for one another. Once they were old enough they moved closer to the shore, where they take up cases for fun, and make sure humans dont get too close. They obviously got married as soon as they could, and spend their time adventuring and scavenging. Occasionaly they will go to human markets, selling fish theyve hunted for money to buy cool weapons and food, but otherwise they like to mess around with pirates and ships. They also like to hang out and have lunch with their friends who claim to be human, Papierwaite and his adopted child Sammun-Mak, who run a museum and live on the edge of the shore, easy access and all.

One day, while exploring a cool shipwreck, they found a little egg, Max, instantly infatuated by it, begged Sam to take it home, so they did. Eventually that egg hatched and they had a kid of their own :) (GEEK!!!) Max unfortunately wasnt allowed to touch her, as he might poison her. Though their baby was always ill and burned so easily, even though Max hadnt touched her! always squinting and shocking them. Confused, they went to Granny Ruth for help. under further investigation they deducted that their baby was an electric eel! Which usually live in freshwater, so she was extra fragile. Though as she got older, she grew stronger, and shockingly smarter, always researching and making devices.

also btw the “save sybil” parallel in alt!305 cannot be “save max.” like we know sam and max care about each other ok. this does not need to be reasserted. the reason max’s sacrifice is so important is because it shows us that, despite his flippant and devil-may-care attitude, he does care deeply about people other than sam. he loves sybil to the point where he is willing to die for her, that he will accept dying alone just to save her life! it says so much about his character, especially in an episode where the entire point is that max is a lot deeper than he seems— he hardly ever shows concern or affection for anyone who isn’t sam, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. for a hypothetical alt!305 to be anywhere near as interesting then i think it’s important that sam would also have to save someone other than max, since to be honest from the way sam acts in 305 he gives off way more “i am ready and willing to let everyone die to save you” vibes. much like alt!max lacks the character development max gets at the end of 305, maybe sam can lack the character development alt!sam gets in deciding to prioritize something over getting to play cop with max forever

anyway i am partial to “save sammun-mak” myself. sammun-mak tags along the mission so he can use his psychic abilities to help but his brain starts setting on fire at the Big Climactic Moment, prompting sam to try and save his life. this of course would be preceded by 2 episodes of sam and sammun-mak interactions because they are really fucking funny
