✨ System collapse spoilers ✨
Okay but Tarik is having the WEIRDEST week of his life can we all agree? 😂 like homeboy is the only one to have had significant (probably traumatic) experience with SecUnits
So he probably has some expectations, right? But then this one rogue-but-not-really unit keeps accidentally bumping into his love life and then being weirdly judgmental about it, everybody is babying it even tho it’s a terrifying murder machine, your sentient spaceship and possible love interest treat it as their favourite poor little meow meow, and then once you all get into serious danger, it’s grand plan is 🤔 let’s create some media about it 🤔

tarik's death is even more devastating when you consider how much he would never know.
tarik died thinking abeke and meilin were dead and he had failed them.
tarik would never know shane was the devourer all along, he never knew abeke got her heart broken, he never knew her relationship with meilin changed for the better, that meilin and jhi were freed from the bile, that they mended their bond, that the war was ended. he never knew rollan and meilin got together.
he never knew conor got infected, that his own nephew summoned cabaro and rollan and abeke took him under their wing, that abeke reconciled with shane in the end. he never knew that abeke lost uraza, but that she got her back.
tarik never knew that rollan would eventually create a bond token, his own talisman, from tarik's old cloak. he never even knew rollan took his greencloak vows -- he could only hope. oh god. i am in so much pain.
he never got to see the four grow up. change. mature. become stronger. love each other deeper.
i'm choosing to believe erdas has an afterlife of some kind and tarik has been watching over his kids the whole time bc it's too painful to imagine otherwise.

My favorite Mournival member and my favorite Blood Angel, together...it would be either a shitshow or...a bigger shitshow. But somehow funny to see.
Mi miembro favorito del Mournival y mi Angel Sangriento favorito, juntos...serio un completo desastre o...un desastre enorme. Pero, seria divertido presenciarlo.

I wrote a fic for @gauzyfruitcake as part of the Murderbot New Year Gift exchange:
It’s all about friendships…and also some more speculation about Gurathin’s mysterious past…but also because I want @gauzyfruitcake to draw Gurathin in the item of clothing mentioned…

Spirit Animals and Character Development
Has anyone ever realized how Rollan and Abeke, and Meilin and Conor all have opposite character developments?
(I've never seen this talked about, so I'll just have to talk about it.)
Rollan: His arc is all about learning to put more faith in people. He learns to trust more. After bonding with Tarik, he learns that it's okay to have people that you can trust, care about, and lean on. He learns that some people are trustworthy and that trust can be earned.
Abeke: Her arc centers around learning to trust less. At the beginning of the series, she blindly puts her trust in Shane and Zerif. Later, she learns her trust was misplaced. At the end of the first series, we see her fight Shane and yell at him about how she trusted him and he essentially lied to her the whole time. She learns that although people can seem kind, they may not actually be.
Meilin: Her arc is about how to step down and not be so controlling all the time. Give other people a chance to lead, to make decisions. She needs to step down from a leader-like position in the group and let others' opinions be heard. She needs to be less of a leader and more of a follower.
Conor: His arc centers around being more of a leader. He learns to trust himself, step up as leader, and be less of a follower. He learns that even though he messed up when he gave away the Iron Boar, he can still step up and make decisions and lead the group. He learns to be more sure of himself and less shy.
I love Reilin and Coneke as much as the next person, but platonic Rollan x Abeke and platonic Meilin x Conor is something that I don't see much of. I think it's so interesting that their character developments are mirror images of each other. They need to be a bit more like the other person was at the beginning of the book. It also creates an opportunity where the characters can learn these traits from each other, and I really enjoyed how it played out in the books. It's such an interesting dynamic.
It also shows how neither extreme is ever healthy: you shouldn't trust people too little, lest you end up like Rollan, but you shouldn't trust people too much, either, or else you'll end up like Abeke. You shouldn't be too controlling and bossy, or else you'll end up like Meilin, but you shouldn't be afraid to step up either, lest you end up like Conor.
I don't know if the writers did this intentionally, or if it was just a byproduct of the characters, but either way, I love the way this was handled.

ah, nostalgia
So, when I was in elementary school, my sister had this book series called Spirit Animals by various authors, and I picked up the first book and read it and was obsessed for a year or two, then put them down and never thought about them again.
But it’s always nice to revisit your old books, so if you’re in the, like, 5-person spirit animals fandom, welcome! If you’re not, you should be. It’s fun. We get a new piece of fanart every few years. You’ll also be hopelessly confused by this post without having read the books.
Now, in blood ties we meet what I think is one of the most underrated and underutilized characters of the series: Lishay.
What do we really know about Lishay?
It’s basically canon at this point that she and Tarik were in love. Her brother’s dead soon before she meets our main characters. Her spirit animal dies at the end of the book, widely considered the worst thing that could ever happen to you. She’s a native of Southern Zhong (in the book of Shane). Oh, and she and her brother were twins. She’s around Tarik’s age, so middle-aged, probably in her forties or at most, late thirties. Tarik describes her as “one of [the Greencloaks’] finest.”
And you can do so much with just that information!
I would actually go so far as to have her and Tarik be married. This is how you can tell I typed this at midnight and that I have too much time on my hands, but seriously, it makes them more than two greencloaks who maybe have a thing for each other trying to keep four kids alive in the middle of a war; they have lives that they left behind! It makes Tarik’s eventual death and Lishay’s entire existence in the series even more tragic. And think of the old married couple jokes there could’ve been!
She and her brother were twins, and I feel like he maybe deserved more than a single sentence in passing. Maybe her brother and Tarik were also friends, and now they have to both cope with their grief. Maybe Lishay’s used to always having her brother guard her back, so Tarik notices that she fights less effectively without him--two halves of a whole, as the whole ying-and-yang thing goes. And with her spirit animal dying, we open up room for Meilin to have flashbacks in Fire and Ice about Lishay helping her through the grief of losing her own father right in front of her. Part of what makes Lishay’s character so interesting to me is that she’s probably the character we see go through the most and worst losses in the least amount of time. Her homeland is being attacked, she’s under constant physical and emotional stress, and she loses her twin brother and spirit animal in what, two weeks, AT MOST? And then she still has to fight a war?
Lishay is a native of southern zhong and seems familiar with the jungles of that region, so why not have her explicitly be a native OF THE JUNGLES? Make up a tribe for her to belong to. That makes the fight in the jungles more personal, because this is her home. Show her skills at hunting, climbing trees, swimming in the rivers, and archery, etc., skills that you could only pick up in the jungle. Give us a perspective of Zhong that goes beyond Meilin’s rich girl, general’s daughter life; give us women of the jungle who are trained to hunt and fight alongside their brothers, people who live in treehouses or wooden huts. And Lishay is supposed to be one of the greencloak’s finest warriors! Give us a taste of her swordfighting or archery skills that makes her so remarkable. Give her a more crucial role in the final battle; show her being close to other powerful greencloaks, like Olvan and Lenori.
And in the book of shane, make it undeniably obvious that the only reason he got away was because of the talismans, not because she couldn’t shoot him out of a tree.
In short, give her the fucking credit.
Anyways. End rant.
