Stowell Court Candle Auction

In the second week of April, the Stowell Court Candle Auction takes place at Tatworth in Somerset. The auction is for a year long ownership of Stowell Mead, a watercress bed. Bidding lasts until the tallow candle, which is the sole light illuminating the auction room, burns down. During the auction the doors are locked and once the winner is declared, the participants retire for a splendid repast of bread, cheese and… watercress.

Settling in to life in Falmouth

Three days ago, I made the 132-mile journey from Tatworth to Falmouth – a slightly(!) shorter journey than my last solo trip (to the USA, three years ago, when I’d just finished my A Levels) but no less daunting.  I’m sure that some who are reading this will wonder why it has taken me so long to write up this first blog post – my apologies, but we are still waiting for our Wi-Fi to be fixed, so I’m eating up my mobile phone’s data each time I access the internet!

Since Monday I’ve been settling into community life, starting to develop a routine (which will change next week once the internship gets going properly) and figuring out how the fancy new appliances in the kitchen work! Speaking of fancy new appliances/gadgets, I was surprised to receive my first care package less than 24 hours after leaving home… and was very excited when I opened it to discover a brand-new coffee machine! Thank you to my lovely mummy (who I’m sure is making good use of the coffee machine that I left at home...!) Tuesday was spent discussing the liturgy for our commissioning service which we be held a week on Saturday, and we spent most of Wednesday putting together the flat-packed furniture in each of our three rooms, but still have plenty of boxes full of items from the old house to unpack.  After a morning spent discussing a thought-provoking video, I managed to unpack the various bags and boxes which I had used to hold my clothes and other personal possessions. I now have a very lovely (and very spacious!) bedroom which feels a lot more welcoming than it did when I first got here and found it contained only a bare bed, a desk, and three large cardboard boxes!

So far, I’ve encountered only a small number of the people who I’ll be working alongside, so I’m going to have to work hard to remember lots of names! I’ll be meeting the incumbent of my parish-placement shortly, and attending a service at Mabe (one of my parishes) this Sunday. This term I shall be undertaking my non-parish placement with the Chaplaincy team at Penryn Campus, which is shared by Falmouth College and the University of Exeter. As a recent alumnus of the University of Exeter, I’m looking forward to seeing this campus from a different perspective, and I’m intrigued to find out more next Wednesday when I visit for the first time… during Freshers’ Week! My days will be varied and no two days the same, so to round off this blog post I thought that I’d share a very simplified example of what a typical week might look like for me. You may notice that every day of the week includes Morning and Evening Prayer; this is because praying together as a community is an important part of life in the Way2 Community – it helps us to sustain a steady rhythm of prayer and is important for bringing us all together. We also share meals together wherever possible, as we feel that it is important for our community-building to eat together around the dining table, sharing fellowship as well as food.

A day spent together as a community: this may include meetings with Community Warden, house chores, preparing for services that I may be involved with later in the week, and getting involved in events in our parishes, if time allows.

Wednesday

8am: Morning Prayer

Parish placement day: shadowing the incumbent Priest in my placement parishes (Mabe and Ponsanooth) and getting involved in any events going on in the parishes.

Thursday

A morning spent taking part in Bible study as a community.
