"For most people, a rat is at best an unwelcome guest, and at worst, the target of immediate extermination. But in a field clinic in Tanzania, rats are colleagues—heroes even.
Far from a trash bin-dwelling NYC street rat, the African giant pouched rat is docile, intelligent, easier to train than some dogs, and for East Africans, the performer of lifesaving tuberculosis diagnoses every day.
400,000 new cases of tuberculosis (TB) were estimated to have been prevented by these rats, whose sense of smell would make a bloodhound take notice. As [TB is] the number-one killer among infectious diseases worldwide, many of those 400,000 can be translated into lives saved.
“Not only are we saving people’s lives, but we’re also changing these perspectives and raising awareness and appreciation for something as lowly as a rat,” said Cindy Fast, a behavioral neuroscientist who coaches the rodents for the nonprofit APOPO.
“Because our rats are our colleagues, and we really do see them as heroes.”
APOPO uses giant pouched rats to sniff out traces of TB in the saliva of patients. In parts of Tanzania, a saliva smear test under a microscope by a human may only be 20-40% effective at detecting TB.
By contrast, a giant pouched rat like Ms. Carolina, a now-retired service rat who worked for APOPO for 7 years, raised the rates of detection on TB samples by 40% in the clinic where she worked.
Tumblr media
Pictured: An APOPO employee with one of their trained rats
It would take 4 days for scientists to analyze the number of samples that Carolina could screen in 20 minutes. For that reason, when Carolina retired last November, a party was thrown at the clinic in her honor, and she was given a cake.
TB is sometimes thought of as a thing of the past—a disease for which doctors used to prescribe “dry air,” leading a modern sense of humor to muse at the antiquated, pre-antibiotic medical advice.
But it remains the number-one cause of death globally from a single infectious pathogen, and Tefera Agizew, a physician and APOPO’s head of tuberculosis, told National Geographic that once people see what the nonprofit’s rodents can do to slow the spread, they “fall in love with them.”
3,000 times in her career did Carolina detect one of the six volatile compounds that can be used to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and she got a hero’s send-off to a special compound to live out the rest of her days with her closet friend and sniffer colleague Gilbert, in a shaded enclosure dubbed “Rat Florida.”
“We’ve made special little rat-friendly carrot cakes with little peanuts and things on it that the rat would enjoy,” Fast said. “Then we all stand around and we clap, and we give three cheers, hip hip hooray for the hero, and celebrate together. It’s really a touching moment.”
APOPO has made headlines for its use of these rats in other lifesaving tasks as well: landmine clearance.
One of the world’s great underreported scourges (a lot like TB, coincidentally) is landmine contamination. There are 110 million landmines or unexploded bombs in the ground right now in about 67 countries, covering thousands of square miles in potential danger. Thousands of civilians are killed or injured by these weapons every year.
GNN reported on APOPO’s demining efforts using pouched rats back in 2020. One rat named Magawa alone identified 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance across an area the size of 20 football fields.
If at the start of this story you didn’t like rats, maybe Magawa and Carolina will have changed your mind."

Thinking about how Ma Meilleure Ennemie can be considered a continuation and an interesting thematic expansion of Enemy.
"No shit, lmao, they both have the word enemy in them".
Like, yes, that's exactly the point.
But there's more to it than meets the eye.
We all know that Enemy in many ways is meant to be from Jinx's perspective (music video supports that) - it's HER internal worries, it's HER exhaustingly sad sarcasm, it's HER wreck of emotions that she can't stop.
The song explains why and how she basically convinced herself that she's a curse and will never be a saint no matter what she does.
She exclaims that everybody wants to be her enemy. For her this word means "the person that everyone hates, the person who everyone abandoned, the person for whom no one prays or hopes".
And then in Ma Meilleure Ennemie Ekko... agrees with her - she IS his enemy. But to him this word has so much more meaning and underlying feelings than just "the person I'm against, the person I hate".
For him enemy is also someone who's always near - if not in body, then in mind. Someone who truly shares history with you and can hurt you in more ways than one.
Who you hate so much because you had too much love in your heart for them.
Hatred is not the opposite of love, it's just love with a minus instead of plus, the true opposite of love is indifference. And Ekko feels anything but indifference towards Jinx, even though he tried so many times to convince himself otherwise.
First verse of the song is basically his admission that she's an essential part of him - no matter what he does, no matter how many times he forces himself to forget, no matter how much he tries to keep his enemy out of his mind.
He knows he should stay away, he knows he should keep his own heart under hundreds of locks to not let anyone break it again. But he can't help it. He still loves her despite everything, including his own self.
That's why he also agrees that she's indeed a curse. The most beautiful one. She haunts his thoughts and he hates himself for finding comfort in it. But it's better to be in a bad company than alone, am I right?
The chorus of Ma Meilleure Ennemie sounds almost like a last resort - a mutual attempt to push each other away.
To make matters worse, the whole "meilleur/pire" (best/worst) dichotomy that is constantly present in the song literally from the beginning, is a simple yet clever play on a famous wedding vow - "Pour le meilleur et pour le pire" (translation: for the best and the worst of it). The more they try to convince each other that they should not be together, the more they intertwine their fates because they repeat this vow again and again.
And then in the second verse of Ma Meilleure Ennemie Jinx finally lets herself say things she was so afraid to say before. Lets her feelings and thoughts be known in the most vulnerable way possible. Not with Enemy's upset angry screaming but with this gentle melodic whisper.
And what does she have to say about her feelings towards the person who she shares so much complicated history with?
That his name cuts her open every time she hears it. And that's why she doesn't say it - it hurts her so much.
Ekko's name literally echoes in her mind. Jinx can't even say for sure whether this pain she feels comes from hatred that formed over the years or from pure sweetness, softness and gentleness that she still keeps in her heart for him.
And then comes Je t’avais dit: “Ne regarde pas en arrière” (translation: I told you not to look back) which is such an obvious Orpheus and Eurydice myth reference when you say it out loud.
Albeit, their situation is an interesting take on this myth.
Let me explain. Orpheus had a chance to bring his wife Eurydice back to the land of the living if he guided her there without looking back or else she would end up in the underworld again. There are several versions of the myth that give different explanations on why Orpheus turns back, but they all agree on one thing - it was done because of love.
However, in Ekko's case it's kind of a reverse situation - Jinx will disappear if he turns away from her.
That's what, in my opinion, Turn Your Back and I'll Disappear song means, actually.
And here, at the end of second verse, Jinx explicitly tells Ekko that he shouldn't look back. He should leave past behind, should leave her behind, let her disappear from his life and from this world altogether or else everything will get infinitely worse.
But of course he doesn't, of course he turns back (time) again and again.
He does it because he loves her, just like Orpheus loves Eurydice.
Despite not having much screen time, timebomb still managed to tell such a wonderful intricately woven story.
I analysed just a small part of Jinx and Ekko's symbolic lyricism. Believe me, there's still so much more to talk about and uncover since this story is told through different forms of art that are all worth your attention.

flame reaver x gn! reader. angst. 800w.
Tumblr media
The first time you laid eyes on him, you thought the stories had been wrong.
The man who had left Aedes Elysiae in ruin was no immortal force, no unrelenting god of war. He was a shadow of what had once been—a crumbling ruin wrapped in frayed black cloth, flickering at the edges like a dying flame.
His armor, once gold and obsidian, had dulled to something lifeless. The jagged protrusions, like broken ribs bursting from his form, now seemed more like the remnants of a carcass picked clean by time. And his sword—
The legendary blade that had carved destruction into your home, that had left knowledge itself in embers—dragged against the ground, its edge dull, its radiance faded.
You had tracked him across wastelands and drowned valleys, through the ruins of empires he had reduced to cinders. You were meant to stop him. You had promised you would.
But standing before him now, as the last scholar of a knowledge he had tried to erase, you did not see a man who needed slaying.
You saw a man already dying.
Tumblr media
"Have you come to stop me?" His voice was raw, stripped of the grandeur and menace the rumors had given him. He did not sound like a conqueror. He sounded like something that had burned too long and now had only smoke and ash left in its lungs.
You tightened your grip on your staff. "Should I?"
He laughed, and it was a sound that did not belong in this world—cracked, distant, like wind whistling through a skeleton’s ribs. "If you think it will change anything."
A gust of wind kicked up the dust between you. Even now, embers clung to the folds of his cloak, refusing to die.
"You destroyed Aedes Elysiae." The words felt small, meaningless in the face of all he had done.
He inclined his head slightly, as if considering. "I did."
The rage you had carried for years did not rise as you had expected. Instead, something colder settled in its place.
"Why?"
His fingers flexed at his side. They were no longer whole—veins of fire ran through his skin, cracks in a dying vessel. The corruption was spreading.
He exhaled, and it sounded like the last breath of a fire before it collapsed into embers. "I don’t remember."
You took a step closer. "Liar."
His golden mask tilted toward you. "I remember the fire. I remember the screams. I remember something calling me. But why?"
His hand clenched into a fist. "Why did I burn the city that I once called home?"
Tumblr media
The nights were cold in the wasteland. He did not sleep, but you could tell the fire inside him flickered weaker when the sun set. He had stopped moving toward the Coreflame for now, though whether it was because of you or because his body was failing, you did not know.
You should have struck him down while he was still.
Instead, you sat across from him, staring at the broken creature before you.
"Was there nothing left?" you found yourself asking. "No one left worth sparing?"
His fingers traced the hilt of his sword absentmindedly. "There was a time I would have spared them all."
You swallowed. "But you didn’t."
"No." He looked at his own hand, the veins of flame crawling higher. "Something changed."
"Something?"
His mask turned toward you. "Or maybe it was me."
The silence between you stretched. You should not have cared. You should not have felt this pull toward understanding him. And yet, as you watched him sit there, a man crumbling under the weight of what he had become, you realized something.
He did not need redemption. He did not need forgiveness.
Tumblr media
The e grove lay in ruin, the last remnants of its wisdom shrouded in shadow. And at the center of it all—
Anaxagoras sat upon the luminary throne, unconscious, one of the three shards of the Coreflame pulsing weakly.
Flame Reaver stood before him, his tattered cloak barely stirring, his gauntleted fingers hovering just above the light that would end his suffering or consume him whole.
You stepped forward. "Don’t."
He did not turn to face you, but you saw his hand clench. "You would stop me?"
"I would remind you." You took another step closer. "This is not yours to take."
His shoulders trembled. The mask upon his face made him unreadable, but something in the way he stood—
Something in the way he hesitated—
"Cerces has chosen him," you continued, your voice steady. "For you to take it now is to reduce everything to ruin."
The fingers of his outstretched hand twitched. He could take it. The hunger within him screamed for it. And yet—
He lingered.
The world seemed to hold its breath.
Then, with a slow exhale, he lowered his hand. The embers along his body flickered once before dimming.
You turned from the throne.
And you walked away.
He was not a god. He was not a legend.
He was only a man who sought redemption.
But in the end, even this flame must die. Sooner or later.

Thought I'd elaborate on the tags from my previous post, so here's some things about Arthur's tuberculosis. There's some confusion sometimes about how Arthur's TB didn't spread to the rest of the gang, and since all things vaccines and medical care are my thing, I thought I'd break it down.
Firstly, there's different types of tuberculosis.
Thomas Downes had very aggressive tuberculosis, and likely didn't have much time left whether Arthur had beat him or not. Arthur caught the illness from Thomas spitting blood in Arthur's face, near his mouth.
Now, "active" tuberculosis (pulmonary and extrapulmonary) can spread very quickly and can make you ill very quickly, but there's also something called Latent Tuberculosis (LTBI). This form of tuberculosis is spread through a different strain of bacteria compared to active tuberculosis, meaning that the illness can stay in you for a very long time without displaying any symptoms. You cannot spread it unless you give someone the bacteria through specific means, like Thomas Downes' spitting blood in Arthur's mouth.
Secondly, people who have latent tuberculosis are infected with the TB bacteria, not the TB disease.
The latent tuberculosis bacteria essentially "sleeps" in your body until it's either woken up, or you're on medication that keeps it "asleep". You can live a regular life with latent tuberculosis for the most part, and in Arthur's case, he did for a little while. He didn't show many symptoms until the later chapters.
But the thing is, latent tuberculosis can very easily become active tuberculosis.
Things like stress, lack of self care, poor living conditions, and Arthur's lifestyle in general, did not help Arthur's illness. I'd argue and say that Guarma was the point that Arthur's tuberculosis really became active, the whole situation with what happened on that island was enough to set it off irreversibly.
So there's a chance that if Guarma never happened, then Arthur may have had a little more time. But that's just me.
The depth of how not only Arthur changed, but his illness changing with him, physically aches me.

i cant stop thinking about husband!gojo who likes to whisper affirmations into your ears while you're sound asleep.
he’s just leaning inches from your face quietly murmuring, “you want me so badly. you’re so in love with me. i’m the most handsome man on this planet. you’re in love with this cute face.”
and you wake up all disoriented like, “what?”
he simply kisses you silly. “good morning sweets!”
you know better than to trust a giddy satoru who can barely contain the growing grin on his face. “toru what were you saying?”
“oh don’t you worry your pretty little mind over it~!”

we really don't talk enough about how cesare (who proclaims himself to be honorable) actually has an extreme level of self-absorption and narcissism. they jump out on different situations especially in his vindictive sexual harassment of the women he slept with for wounding his ego. like his abuse of ursula (who was deceived by his chivalrous façade) for leaving him and taking a will of her own vs. his aggressive grabbing of caterina's breast when she taunted him at his sister's wedding (shows that he's still bitter over her rejecting him at forli).
