Shit, this fucking image:
Tumblr media
my first thought was that she got both eyes black, and then i noticed it's only her makeup smeared. And i don't have any words to say how IMPORTANT is that.
We've never seen Ashley crying, like, seriously crying. We've seen her tantrums as a child and her unhiged half-crying half-laughing in the Decay ending. She didn't cry when she and Andrew killed Nina, she didn't cry when she was being strangled, she didn't cry when she got the vision of Andrew killing her.
This, on the other hand, seems fucking real. Her hair's messy, her eyes are half-open. Like she just waking up after having crying all night; like she go to bed without even taking her make-up off and now it's stuck to her skin like dry glue.
And the dialogue: "(because you're just as full of shit as me)" Am I crazy for thinking this thought is clearly about Andrew? I strongly suspect this is the Decay Route, because it makes sense. This Route is all about Andrew falling in a even deeper pit of denial and putting all the blame for their actions on Ashley.
And, you know? Ashley has usually allowed this line of thinking. Unlike Andrew, she knows who she's, and she knows she's cruel and manipulative and just plain evil. She allows Andrew blame her because it's helpful for their relationship's manipulative dynamic, and she doesn't care. The only instance in where we've seen her blaming Andrew was when she was trying to manipulate him, using Nina's murder as a weapon.
But here? She's not manipulating anyone, she's thinking to herself. She's on bed (or on the floor) and notably alone and stating that her brother is as bad and deceitful as her.

I just realized that in chapter 1, when Ashley faints and wakes on her parents' bed, Andrew probably brought her there so he could have more space to hold her while she was unconscious.

TCOAAL (not that big or eye-opening) THEORY
Tbh, I have a feeling that Ashley is not just the incestuous one, but more rather uncomfortable with Andrew sometimes (wow, that sounds controversial)
So, the main point of my theory are CGs. In those particular, Ashley seems quite confused, if not nervous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, in the second episode, it becomes quite obvious that siblings have a rather strange bond. In that particular episode, it becomes clear how physical they are actually with each other. Ashley, most of the time, initiates it, and Andrew starts to accept it. After what Ashley seems to be surprised and in Burial root, she admits that Andrew "have changed"
My other point why Ashley might be not that into all of those incestuous things are dialogues after the vision in Burial root.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Siblings discuss the vision, and at some point, Andrew states that Ashley "come off that way sometimes."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taking to the note Ashley's reaction, it could be proof that Ashley doesn't consider her actions and sabotaging her brother love life as something that comes out that way. Her goal isn't to get with Andrew in bed. She's trying to keep Andrew close to her, no matter what. Ashley's just using any tool to keep him closer.
In addition, all jokes aside, Ashley doesn't seem that keen on the vision. Unlike Andrew, she accepts it, but she's still quite uneasy with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe I'm just reading in too much. Either way, I think that both Ashley and Andrew are messed up, and both of them have had those thought in any shape of form(btw, Ashley is really into Sweet-Home-Alabama jokes). What I'm trying to state is that Ashley's perspective is different from Andrew's.
Thank you for your attention (=`ω´=)

Alright, theory time:
Andrew and Ashley will be getting fake IDs in episode 3 no matter the route.
We know that they can't use their own IDs as they were pronounced dead due to the soda/water supply/organ harvesting/surgery conspiracy. And they can't use their parents' IDs as the parents "went missing."
So, who will they be on new IDs? We can guess that they'll still use their own first names or if they (*cough* Andrew *cough*) are being extra cautious, they'll probably use their nicknames on the IDs; but what about last names? Well, this might be how we learn Mrs Graves maiden name, they might go with that as their last name.
Relating to this theory, I have a question about this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do they have their new IDs by this point (assuming all these screenshots happen in the same route and are connected) or are they going to have to convince these officers of a lie? I mean, obviously the Grave siblings haven't gotten rid of the stolen car yet, (I assume we'll see Andrew having an internal panic attack.) so they might not have their new IDs at this point.

Hear me out:
Andy and Andrew are two different people. Theorizing he has undiagnosed Multiple Personality Disorder as a way of coping with the trauma of what happened with Nina.
In the same turn, I think Leyley might actually be some kind of succubus demon thing.
The demon keeps calling her Tar Soul. Obvi she's pretty warped in the head but something grabbed my attention. During the Blood Oath scene, Andrew cut her finger and there was a strange red glow around her finger.
But not when he cut his own.
He binds her to oath that she won't say a thing about what happened that day. But then she specifically marks his eye.
What if, unknowing of her demon power, she cursed him to only have eyes for her? That would explain why Julia was his girlfriend.

Been tending to the brainworms by reading through the essays written by Leyleyfication and nemestraea, which were both extremely well written and fascinating to read. Though it's a bit funny that they both mention wanting to study Andrew in a lab to understand him cause. Maybe i'm just Projecting™️ but both Andrew and Ashley, to me, seem perfectly easy to understand (and even a little predictable) if you look at them from the angle of Cluster-B personalities, an impression that really only solidified the more i ruminate over the analysis essays and thought about the interactions in Episode 1 & 2. Including some scenes that i feel are actually "telling" for this theory of mine but haven't been mentioned.... and i'm suspecting that's also what made me instantly latch onto this game and its characters/plot with a foaming mouth

What really happened in Room 302?
Yes, just like everyone else I am finally doing a small essay/analysis on TCOAAL.
This time I wanted to dive in something that wasn't a big part of the game, but has been on my mind since my first play through of the game and that is like the title states; What really happened in Room 302? Lets begin.
Tumblr media
I wanted to start off by talking about the Lady in Room 302. Who is she?
We really don't know much. Her eye color isn't shown, she looks somewhat average but in terms of others opinions (ie; the Warden's and even Ashley) She is a very pretty woman. Even at a point Andrew says that she looks good. Take a look at some of the dialog below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, wasn't she?
After this very tasteful conversation these two love-birds have, Ashley heads up to commence the ritual to sacrifice the 2nd Warden, and of course Our Ashley pulls it off with no problems, and back downstairs she goes with full intentions of painting the wall with Lady 302's brains, but it appears someone beat her to the punch.
Tumblr media
AND NOW I PRESENT WHERE I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO CALL CAP ON MR. DOORMAT EXTRAORDINAIRE AND HIS SILLY LITTLE LIES.
Tumblr media
Your honor, this man is absolutely lying. The first thing that made me question everything about his story here is where she is lying dead. On the damn bed. Your honor, let's enhance this real quick.
Tumblr media
That nail gun is a damn good several feet away from where Lady 302 lies dead on the bed. In fact it is in exactly the same position as when we left Andrew alone with her, and look at the sheer distance. These apartments clearly aren't huge but let me just be critical for a minute. Her mattress appears to be a single style mattress, so lets take in some measurements.
Tumblr media
I can settle on the length being 75" or 6.25ft. So the apartment is about 12 feet wide. Not huge by any means, but to go from sitting down on a bed, even the edge, she would have to make quite the lunge while accounting for some random maniac being right next to you with a meat cleaver. I also do not think she would be the type to risk her life for a daring escape. Look at how absolutely bewildered she is the second Andrew rushes her.
Tumblr media
That is NOT the face of someone who is absolutely down to fuck around and find out. She also had a chance to get help while also risking her life, when she is given the radio she could have screamed for help, and while yes she would've died, at this point I would say the risk factor was relatively similar.
Now that I have established my reasoning for why I don't think this lady tried to kill Andrew with a nailgun or even had the chance to, let's go over some of the reasons I think he DID choose to kill her.
No Witnesses.
This is a very boring theory but I have to bring it up no less. I think there is a good chance he just said fuck it, and killed her for the sake of not leaving evidence behind. She saw their faces, heard their names, and they even said they were her neighbor from upstairs. Leaving her behind could've ruined EVERYTHING for them after this point, and based on Ashley's sour reaction to her mere existence, I think he already knew damn well Ashley would want her dead too.
Make my Ashley happy.
This ties back to the point I made in No Witnesses. Ashley took her as a threat, and obviously Andrew noticed. She was not pleased after he called her "Pretty". I think once he was alone, he figured he would off her to show Ashley that he wasn't ogling her or wanting to do anything with her. In fact she meant so little to him, he butchered her right on her bed. To support this, the way Ashley reacts when she returns absolutely floors Andrew, he is calm about what happened but Ashley is still coming up with thoughts that he tried to fuck her, when in his mind, he was probably hoping she would be thrilled that he killed this awful, hell-bound, hussie. But instead she is still somehow mad despite her being now a corpse. He becomes to fed up that even though he did what she would've anyways, it is somehow not good enough for her. (I will dive deeper into this interaction below with another theory that relies heavily on this.)
The Hussie hit on him.
This one ties into Make my Ashley happy. There is a good chance this obviously sexually attractive woman tried seducing Andrew while they were alone. She had no problem doing it with the Warden's to get better treatment, and I have no doubt this was her go-to get out of trouble free card. This charming young man would surely fall for her good looks right? Right? There's two thought processes that would make this reasonable. 1. He was worried how Ashley would react if she walked in with her clearly flirting with him and how that would make her feel. 2. My personal favorite of these two, he is dedicated to Ashley and was offended by her advances and killed her in a show of devotion to her.
Now that we have the more sane theories out of the way, lets get to the GOOD STUFF.
Andrew's Fantasy.
This theory is more of a mental guess as to Andrew's relationship and views of Ashley. He has been clearly fed up with her more than once up to this point, having arguments, dealing with her shit, and all the trauma he just experienced from starving for weeks, isolation, and having to butcher and eat someone, and then murder a man to save her.
What if once Andrew had a moment alone with someone who was essentially his victim, he decided to truly see how he felt about something. I believe Andrew may have not seen Lady 302 as Ashley, but just for the hell of it, imagined that she was Ashley. Despite the different appearances, I'm sure he could overlook it in the state of mind he was in at this point, and decided how it would feel to finally kill "Ashley". The way he kills her just doesn't feel like he said fuck it and wanted the lady dead, she is laid out on the bed, there's no signs of a struggle either. Later in the game during one of the visions, there is the one where Andrew finally kills Ashley. When she accepts that he will kill her, he brings the cleaver to her throat similarly to how the throat of Lady 302 was cut. The similarities just feel so similar that I had to bring this up despite it being possibly far fetched but that's what makes these fun!
and now for my most absolutely far fetched theory yet.
Don't these two look similar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This theory is much more far fetched but hear me out on this!
I know this may be a result of Nemlei's artstyle but these two have some stark similarities in my opinion. Both blonde, same eye color based on the greyscale of them, similar hair parting, and a similar face shape.
After all the trauma Andrew went through in the weeks locked in their apartment and then killing several people and eating one no doubt sent his brain to a bad place.
I think after all that hell he endured he may have simply had a breaking point and felt like he saw a ghost or just the stark similarities between Lady 302 and Nina just made something snap.
I want to back this up by making a point to the story telling in the game. Before they go and escape their apartment conveniently before the Room 302 incident, there is a dream about how Andrew and Ashley killed Nina. This could be just the flow of the story telling however, I feel like it was a lead up to what really happened in Room 302. It just feels too perfect to include that scene right before he kills someone who I am assuming is what Nina may have grown up to look like, AND then with this scene occurring once Ashley returns almost feels like a nail in the coffin of this theory.
Tumblr media
Nina isn't brought up in the apartment, or once they're in the motel. Nina is brought up during a heated exchange in Room 302 right after Andrew might have felt as if he killed Nina once again, yet just like when they killed Nina, Ashley still somehow thinks that Andrew has a thing for a woman he helped kill, and this absolutely drives him off his fucking rocker.
Tumblr media
This exchange floored Mr. Doormat so intensely he finally was ready to absolutely throttle the life out of her. Andrew was finally so fed up with being berated for doing things for Ashley's sake he just wanted it to be done and over with forever. Andrew once again found himself in the same place Ashley put him in all those years ago, but this time he knows he isn't as vulnerable as he was and uses it to his advantage, but after their little squabble, they leave together to bless our hearts with Chapter 2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps this was as plain as the story made it out to be. There is a good chance that Andrew didn't want to leave a witness and said hell with it and butchered the woman in Room 302. But I'd like to believe that with all the hidden details Nemlei has scattered throughout this game that there is truth to one of these theories, hell maybe even a giant jumble of them all together is the true story of Room 302.
But with everything I presented today I hope you all perhaps are too questioning what really happened in Room 302 like I was.
I'd love to hear any theories you guys have regarding this or twists/opinions on the ones I presented here!
Thank you all for reading!

TCOAAL - Metaphysics Theory
Okay so we've seen some interesting stuff in the most recent tcoaal progress report, and I'm SO ready to read a lot of stuff into it.
Some observations:
People have souls. There are also a number of Entities whose natures are more or less mysterious.
Tumblr media
This lil guy is generally referred to as The Entity. It has a greater or lesser degree of difficulty finding summoning circles in the human world from its usual residence on the other side of the dream borderlands. It makes a pact with Ashley. It seems to want to collect or consume human souls. Its name is unknown, its dialogue is displayed as being spoken by "? ? ?".
The Entity notes that Ashley has a "tar-colored soul", and it refers to her as "tar soul". It implies that this is why it does not want to take her soul. It further indicates that this is not just a nickname but a preexisting phenomenon, the nature of which is unclear.
Ashley seems to be much better at summoning entities than the cultists we encounter, despite proceeding fairly haphazardly and without much background knowledge.
Tumblr media
While in the dream borderlands, Ashley sometimes encounters what seem to be human souls. Normal souls appear like this.
Tumblr media
During her vision in the Decay route, Ashley encounters a soul that looks like this. It is part of a group of four souls in a small room, hovering near The Entity. If Ashley tries to speak to it, a heart pops up between it and another (normal) soul. The Entity describes it as "a Tar Soul to be" that never "hatched", and remarks that Ashley's soul looks similar but darker.
That is, a Tar Soul proper, like Ashley, is either a "hatched" version of this, or has the potential to "hatch" into... something.
Given that the number of souls in this area corresponds to the number of souls The Entity has taken, and the Tar Soul To Be is part of a couple, it is sometimes theorized that this is Ms. Graves's soul.
Tumblr media
This is Lord Unknown, to whom the Cult seems to be dedicated, and who our heroes are able to summon (but not communicate with) in the cult building.
Lord Unknown shares some imagery with The Entity, but they seem to be distinct.
In the Burial route, during the second summoning / the sacrifice of the Graves parents, Ashley says that The Entity can't have Andrew's soul, because it belongs to her. The Entity tells her it intends to summon her again, and instructs her to bring Andrew with her.
Tumblr media
In the Burial / Sane route, during her vision, Ashley encounters a number of souls and must capture them in bottles. Afterward, she encounters this lil guy, who is referred to as "an entity". When she makes her way to it, she seems to recognize it, threatens to put it into a bottle (as a joke), and then says "let's get out of here before it finds us". Additionally, though its name is displayed as "? ? ?" (like The Entity" and it does not speak any words, the ellipses in its dialogue boxes are displayed in green. This seems to suggest that this is Andrew's soul.
From its appearance, we might conclude that this is a Tar Soul that has Hatched or that is closer to Hatching than the Tar Soul To Be encountered earlier.
Additionally, it seems to be taking a shape more similar to that of Lord Unknown (scale aside) than the human souls we've encountered.
All of that suggests that what a Tar Soul is is a soul on the path towards becoming an Entity like Lord Unknown - or, colloquially, a nascent demon.
The newest progress report gives us a few new images, but we're going to be focusing on these two in particular:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm!! Interesting!!
Let's zoom in on that second one:
Tumblr media
Here's what I'm seeing:
A Hatched / Hatching Tar Soul appears to be the playable character in this scene.
The other image seems to depict this same entity catching some red flowers (associated with The Entity and with the dream borderlands), with some trepidation.
This entity has lost track of "time."
Given what we saw of the Hatched / Hatching Tar Soul in chapter 2, and given that it seems to be a playable character, it seems reasonable to conclude that this is either Andrew or Ashley - given what we've observed above, Ashley's soul likely looks something like this, or will at some point, or did at some point.
The rest of this is way more speculative, and I'm unsure what direction it might go in chapter 3:
After the Burial / Sane vision (which Ashley seems to have brought Andrew's soul into), Andrew tells us that he was unable to sleep during that time.
Andrew often has trouble sleeping, and Ashley's presence helps.
In these new screenshots, the Hatched / Hatching Tar Soul seems to be confused about time, suggesting it's been in a strange state outside of the normal world for a long, ah, time.
This suggests that there is something unusual about the entanglement of Andrew and Ashley's souls. Does she literally have his soul in some way? Was she able to remove it from his body when she had this vision? How are their souls connected? Is the proximity of his own soul affecting his ability to sleep?
I'm not sure this is anything, but my curiosity has been piqued.
Anyway. That's just some thoughts, based on my current understanding of things! I hope people find it interesting, I'd love to hear what others think of these speculations.

Alright y’all- here it is
Dumbass Theorizes about the eyes in TCOAAL
White Pupils:
Tumblr media
This one doesn’t have any real- insight to it, as the only people we’ve seen with white pupils are the Graves Family. So it represents just that, the Graves Family!
I did have a theory that it could potentially represent ‘tar souls’, but given as how Mr Graves’ soul is white- that doesn’t seem to be the case
Tumblr media
Greyscale:
Tumblr media
Tenants of the apartment building (aside from the Graves Siblings)
Minor blurbs, unimportant blurbs in their lives not important enough to remember the details of, if they even are depicted with eyes
Tumblr media
Something I find interesting is the 302 Lady’s eyes, since they’re the most detailed of the tenants, even before she was given sprites
They kind look- hypnotic almost? Perhaps referring to how she enticed the wardens with “favors” into giving her food (and possibly attempted to persuade Andrew)
Purple Tint (And Purple in general)
Tumblr media
Purple is commonly associated with royalty, though it does have some spiritual meaning
Purple can convey arrogance, immaturity or an emotional state of mind. It can also be a meaning for enlightenment in a way.
We only see the purple tints within the flashback/dream sequences, so I’m going with the enlightenment definition.
With Andrew, it’s him getting a better understanding with his past and actions. Coming to terms with his situation and how he’ll deal with it (Decay and Burial routes)
With Ashley it’s a bit difficult. She cared so little about Nina that she forgot her name and what she looked like, so she isn’t understanding her actions. Though I do think any flashbacks from Ashley’s POV will be little to none cause of the Clairvoyant Dreams, imma still try to interpret it in case. Ashley’s enlightened with these dream sequences is likely with her self worth, or the lack of it. Her mother leaving her and Andrew, her friend developing a crush on Andy, Andy almost picking Nina over her. And considering how blatant her lack of self worth in the demon dream sequences are, I’m sensing a pattern
Now, Julia is the only character (besides Nina and the 302 Lady) with a black pupil, and given how little we know about her I don’t want to go into a rant where I grab at straws hoping to find something. Maybe I’ll reblog this with more if we meet Julia, but for now that’s gonna be it
Thanks yall for wanting to listen to me ramble, I love minor details like this with character design, it makes my heart happy as a fellow character designer :3

Tcoaal Dev Update and Thoughts You know the drill it's under the cut for those who wanna cut and run on my infestation of thoughts on The Coffin Game
OK I'M
I WANNA TALK ABOUT THE TCOAAL UPDATE BC IT'S BEEN ROTATOING AROUND MY HEAD AND I THINK IT SAYS A FUCKING
L O T
ABOUT ANDREW WITHOUT REVEALING THE TOTAL CONTEXT (which could change this entire yell that I wanna have but that's the thrill of the game theory)
The fact that there is SOME rumor going on (Which if I had to put my finger on would be either that he's boning his sister, ((which would further Andrew's want to put distance between himself and Ashley that's permeated)) or that they killed Nina ((Which would also explain why Julie of all people came to Andrew to say she thinks he should ignore them)) Or I guess a secret third thing, that's always possible but listen, we live on the edge here and I'm not above base jumping some logical leaps
The fact that Andrew did not ask Julie and Nina to be Ashley's friends because of a concern for her, but more than likely a concern for his own standing. The fact we have a scene of their mom and Andrew looking at least sad, saying "I'm trying" makes me feel like Mrs Graves was less an Absent Parent who accidentally foisted Ashley's care onto Andrew by proxy of just not having the time to take care of them both herself, and more that she in fact DIRECTLY tasked him with her care. When she got into trouble, Andrew got into trouble, if there were concerns in her behavior, Andrew was tasked to solving it.
It would explain why he says it means a lot to ME (even if he did cover it up with 'Her' afterwards) because it means that he is no longer tasked with 'solving' this issue.
Not only that but the fact that it SOUNDS like they have been dating or at least flirting since high school. This is a flashback from the past. Andrew's hair is shorter, he has acne, there are rumors of Andrew and Ashley floating around meaning Ashley is more than likely at the same school, and as far as we know Ashley was not attending college so.. Anyways this means that lets say generously Andrew is 18 here, last year of high school, and is 22 in the current time. Lets say it takes.. a year for them to date. I doubt it but lets just say. That means they've more than likely been an item for 3 years. 3 years is a.. it's a significant amount of time for a young adult, so the fact that Andrew, when reviewing his memory of her dorm and of her, admits
You'll never see her again. And the fact that it doesn't bother you, bothers you
W O O F buddy.
Not only that but lets assume both rumors here: Andrew clearly saw that Julia was interested in him. He wasn't oblivious to her intentions and even CONSIDERS the whole gambit with her for a few minutes before asking if she had anything going on after school. That moment of him looking away, I would bet cold hard cash was him doing the mental math of how much this would benefit him in the long run. 'He's fucking his sister' > He gets someone to superimpose his fantasies on, he gets an out to the rumors concerning Ashley, he doesn't have to work too hard to establish a relationship because Ashley and her have been… f r i e n d s…. since they were kids. Since before Nina died. (Young Andrew asks Nina and Julie if they would be her friends) OR 'They killed Nina' > Again the clear interest in Andrew offers a little bit of a shield of guilt. Why would Nina's best friend date someone who she thought killed her. Julie and him dating would mean Julie could herself defend him against the rumors, and by proxy Ashley since he's established that Ashley and her are 'Friends'. And again he doesn't have to work hard on getting her attention because she's here and interested.
What a fucking garbage man. I love him I just can't get over the IDEA that he might have used her entirely as a moral meat shield and then when she broke it off with him, just wasn't even emotionally compromised by it. He's been lying to her face for years. He's been lying about Nina He's been lying about his control over Ashley's actions He's been lying about his entire attachment to her
Ashley was so on the fucking money, even if those voicemails were real or a fabrication of Andrew's inner thoughts: Julie really was just a hole for him to fill.

Part of me wants to make a TCOAAL OC/self insert, but the other part of me wants to make a Divilethion OC/self insert
The enlightened(tm) part of me wants to make an OC/self insert that would carry implications that Divilethion and TCOAAL take place in the same universe at the same time. I have my legitimate theories that the two games do take place in the same universe at different points in time, but they could also take place at the same time, too!
I'm just saying, we don't know how deep Divilethions influence on the nameless village goes. It could be very possible that with its reign over the village, it's kept them frozen in a less technologically advanced time period....

the bestie ashley graves
Headcanon A:  realistic
Ashley is a weird girl in middle school. She is the girl that terrifies her classmates playing vampire. She is the girl that puts worms on the other girls plates at lunch. She is the girl making weird noises in the back of the class. She is the bane of the teachers existence & that kid even the “nice” kids feel okay being mean about.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
Ashley & Julia were each other’s first kiss on a dare at a party Ashley somehow strong armed her way into.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Well the tricky thing about TCOAAL is that it’s a game where your decisions impact the story & it’s not complete. This type of media is something I’m a bit unfamiliar with outside tcoaal itself & choose your own adventure books as a kid.
My answer for the sake of this ask game is that as much as I love the idea of an optimistic ending on like a parasocial level…I think Andrew is destined to kill Ashley. I think that’s the tragic outcome that compels me most & that feels most… well narratively fitting I suppose??
This is less a head canon & more a theory but what if even in the romance route Andrew kills Ashley in the end? What if no matter what they end up in a coffin together both dead? What if there is no other ending even if the story leading up to it changes? To me that’s so compelling.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
I love tcoaal canon so much I just… I don’t know lol
Um ok the Graves siblings fooled around as “practice” as teenagers. Because that’s a little funny to me idk

tcoaal episode 1 observations i made on a replay with the power of hindsight:
- the nurse drawing their blood was all part of the organ trafficking scheme. this is how they get the blood types of all the apartment prisoners.
- i made this observation the first time but it's still worth mentioning: andrew & ashley don't get food bc they're AB blood type, and ABs aren't supposed to get any resources.
- also made this observation the first time, but a significant amount of people are committing suicide in the quarantine.
- the voice in my head that i read their mom's voice in became different. instead of a softer "motherly" voice, i went with a more harsh and tired voice. "g-goodbye... ashley." became less of a sad voice, and more of an awkward, tired, disjointed voice.
- despite andrew giving a shit about a lot of things with his anxiety, he doesn't give a shit about the room that details the organ trafficking information. he doesn't feel the need to overanalyze that.
- andrew's tipping point between being the doormat "andy" into the aggressive and assertive "andrew" is when he decides to kill the warden for ashley's sake. he tips further into this when he also decides to kill the 302 lady.
- andrew is usually extremely sensitive regarding the topic of nina and her death, in the sense that he'd break down from panic. but he doesn't snap in that way when ashley taunts him about nina's death. instead threatening her with violence.
- poetically, andrew chokes ashley and she coughs -- let's think about nina coughing and choking to death.
- before andrew's "tipping point" of killing the warden, he still will refer to ashley as "leyley." he is still a bit more playful and submissive to her. he doesn't like being called andy but he's more passive about it before the "tipping point" as well.
- ashley keeps saying shit like, "i can't make you do anything, it was all your choice/i've never made you do anything" but really, she has so much power to make andrew do shit. she even forces the cannibalism meal down his throat. even if killing was his own choice to protect ashley and protect himself, andrew is astronomically down bad that she absolutely Can make him do shit.
- i just love the disjointed ellipses and mixed upper/lowercase laughing. it adds a lot to express emotion
- "you don't really count as a lady, or a person to me" could reference her "tar soul" as a kid, or how he felt really when his mother always put him in charge of her. she's more like a liability than a person. which is why she has so many outbursts about wanting to be loved and be the "only one" for andrew.
- everyone in this universe is such a .... bitch? the snark of the TV announcers, the shopkeep in the beginning of ch2, the 302 lady .. why does everyone just talk like that. sure gives a lot more context to the world that ashley and andrew live in and the circumstances they grew up in
- the two sides of andy / andrew manifest in this chapter and later will be the key defining traits of decay vs burial andrews. as in "playful yet anxious andrew" that we see more of pre-tipping point is burial. the "aggressive/menacing andrew" becomes more evident in decay.
- if my plural andrew theory is correct then the aggressive/decay "andrew" is an alter who is very much formed by death. first with nina. then he was coaxed out a bit more from the cannibalism incident, then fully came out with the warden and 302 lady's killing. andrew breaking down on ashley's bed, distressed abt cutting up the corpse and "he didn't know why he did that," i think reading that in a traumatic plural lens is super interesting. the decay!andrew not giving a shit and being apathetic and not hesitant at all about cutting up a corpse, the burial!andrew or "andy" being so anxious over it and extremely distressed.
- i highkey think the prophetic dreams thing could also be an allusion to oedipus' prophecy too. incest and/or tragic death is an unavoidable fate moment.
- ashley never was viewed as a "person." she's accepted she is a "tar soul" even before the demon encounter. she has no sanity like a normal person's sanity is like. it's like she has one foot in the grave already (hah, grave.) she's not afraid of andrew, she's not afraid of demons, she's not afraid of cannibalism -- what is there to be afraid of when the world hates you for existing anyways? when your family doesn't fucking care for you? you act out and make someone care about you, god DAMNIT. and you don't give a shit about the consequences of your actions, because isn't your entire existence a consequence??? a sin???? she's wholly accepted being a "demon" or "tar soul." andrew is her love, her sanity, her reason, she does whatever the fuck she wants with him cause Thog Don't Caaare. she's already accepted the sin, the demise, the lack of "humanity." from the very beginning she's doomed herself to a tragic ending and is dragging andrew down with her, god damnit.
- and why exactly are these qualities.. attractive to andrew? we know andrew was in love with her and is just repressing it, i wonder if The Incident with nina and how leyley forced him to "choose her," a part of him in the wake of all that trauma just continued to latch onto her. she's the only one who knows their sin. and he's the only one who can be there for her. and then it took root in his mind and became an unavoidable plague. the thought of pursuing any other girlfriend all comes back to the choice between nina and ashley. the idea of romance is permanently tainted by the thought of ashley. and he hates it. he hates it so much but he can't be away from her. he tries to repress it and run away, but it always. comes back. to ashley. and the incident with nina. and how he must always choose ashley no matter what. this "liability" forced herself into his life using a traumatic incident, to become his one and only love. FUCK!
