Masami Ōbari's promo art for Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer, known as Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer outside of Japan. Developed by Technōs Japan and released by SNK into arcades on September 18, 1995. The art was used on the arcade flyer and later as the box art for the Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, and PlayStation ports.
Tumblr media
Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer translates literally to Superman School Gowcaizer.
Technōs was working on a sequel called "High Voltage 12+1" and even had an alpha version prepared, but the company closed before it could be completed and published.
A two part anime based on the game was released in 1996, and later released on DVD in 1999 as a movie.

Voltage Fighting Gowcaizer (1995) 超人学園ゴウカイザー
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Date: September 18, 1995 Platform: PlayStation / Neo Geo / Neo Geo CD / Arcade Developer: Technos Japan Corp. Publisher: SNK Genre: Fighting Theme: Sci-Fi / Martial Arts / Superhero Type: Appropriation
Summary:
Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (known in Japan as Choujin Gakuen Gowcaizer, loosely translated to "Superhuman Academy Gowcaizer") is a 2D fighting game developed by Technōs and released by SNK for arcades (running Neo Geo MVS hardware) on September 18, 1995.
The second fighting game from Japanese developer Technōs after the fighting game adaptation of their Double Dragon series, Gowcaizer is themed heavily on superheroes in Japanese pop-culture. The game is known for the ability to give the player's fighter a special move of a defeated opponent (similar to the Mega Man series and obscure fighting game BloodStorm). It's also known for its animated OVA adaptation.
The game was later released for the Neo Geo AVS on October 20, 1995 and ported to the Neo Geo CD on November 24, 1995 (featuring a vocal-laden arranged soundtrack). It was later ported to the Sony PlayStation by Urban Plant on July 17, 1997 exclusive to Japan. This version uses a new gameplay engine (and does not include the arranged soundtrack or the ability to copy moves). Gameplay
By default, the game allows players to earn one special move from each of their defeated opponent (even in VS battles) and use them as their own. Players can only equip one Trace Move at a time, which can either be replaced (after defeating an opponent) or swapped out (after continuing, from a selection of moves from previously-defeated opponents). If the player has previously defeated an opponent that is the same as their current character (or have defeated a mirror match opponent), they can instead opt to gain a more powerful version of their own Trace Move.
Using the Neo Geo service menu, arcade operators can change this mechanic to either allow players to swap out their Trace Moves after every match (similar to continuing), force players to replace their current Trace Move with their defeated opponent's, remove the ability to swap out Trace Moves after continuing, or disable Trace Moves entirely.

* Is VBA Link the only GBA Windows emulator which includes Game Link Cable emulation? Now for two questions you’ve probably all heard a thousand times and are thoroughly sick of: The thing is, there will be four of us and there is no way they will allow a one player game (Double Dragon Advance is one player, unless you have two GBAs and a Game Link Cable). We’re going to be playing these games on Windows emulators on a big screen TV. My friends however are unfamiliar with GBA’s Double Dragon Advance – and I want to convince them how brilliant it is. My friends love Double Dragon 1 to 3 arcade and NES versions and even Super Double Dragon for the SNES. As well as all of these new COs there was a major change to CO powers, all COs gained a normal CO power and a stronger Super CO power (Except Sturm who lost his CO power, only gaining a Super CO power).I’m organising a Technōs Japan Double Dragon marathon with some friends less than a week from now. All Forces gained at least one CO, though Black Hole gained an extra four. As they are only usable by Black Hole, the actual player cannot ever use them.Īdvance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising also brought with it several new COs. They vary a lot, though a good example is the Black Cannon.
Several new Black Hole weapons: Throughout the Campaign Black Hole uses a variety of new weapons.
Units can however get through gaps in them, by destroying the weaker parts, known as Pipe seams. No Unit can normally pass through them, making them a nuisance for a progressing Army.
Pipeline and Pipe seams: Huge, impenetrable Pipes.
Although they could never destroy a Unit, they would deal three damage to any Unit, making them very useful against high armor Units, such as Neotanks. They damaged all Units in a small area of two squares around the target square.
Silos: A small rocket, capable of being fired by an Infantry or Mech Unit.
Developed by Black Hole, they were the strongest Tank in the game, even stronger than the older Medium Tank.Īdvance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising featured several new Terrain features as well.

Along with Flak, Lash, and Adder, Hawke leaves Macro Land with the few troops he has leftĪs with every Advance Wars series game to date, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising featured a new Unit, the Neotank. Afterwards, Hawke takes over as leader of Black Hole. However, just as it seems Andy will be killed, Hawke, second only to Sturm himself, betrays his leader by killing him with Black Storm, his Super CO Power. Andy steps forward to stop Sturm, to no avail. The Allied Nations COs disarm the missile and corner Sturm, who attempts to blow up the base and kill everyone by self-destructing the missile. The final battle takes place in front of the Death Ray, a powerful new weapon guarding the entrance to a missile, which, in 30 days, will destroy half of Wars World. Near the end of the campaign, when the Black Hole COs have been driven from the nations of Wars World, the COs meet up in Black Hole's base of operations, where they fight Sturm one last time. The four armies must now work together to drive Black Hole out of their world once and for all. Sturm, with an ominous new look, orders each Black Hole CO to invade and capture each of the four countries owned by the four other armies from the original game: Flak is assigned to take Orange Star, Lash to take Blue Moon, Adder to take Yellow Comet, and Hawke to take Green Earth. Along with the original Black Hole army's COs, four new COs were recruited, under the command of Sturm. Lash has also invented several new war weapons that are put to use in this invasion. While the Allied Nations were still recovering from the war in Cosmo Land, the Black Hole Army has already recovered and is launching a large-scale invasion of Macro Land.

Double Dragon
This game doesn't hold up as well as I remember it. I played the NES Version of Double Dragon. These are my thoughts and reviews.
Story Double Dragon is the spiritual successor to the arcade game Renegade; you play as Billy Lee, a martial arts master, and formidable fighting machine. Billy’s girlfriend, Marian, is kidnapped by the Black Warriors, an evil organization in the Double Dragon series. You must make your way through the turf of the Black Warriors gang to save Billy’s girlfriend, Marian. Billy uses various martial…

How old were Riki and Kunio?
Tumblr media
They both date back to the 1986 Arcade Beat-em-up "Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun" (Hot Blooded Tough Guy Kunio a.k.a. Renegade/River City Ransom), so while they look like High Schoolers they've been around for a good 35 years when they were first made by Technōs Japan Corp (ARC System Works later bought the rights to the Kunio-Kun IP to revive the series).
At the time of his debut, Kunio was a 2nd Year Sophomore of his High School.
Riki (Kunio's older Rival at the time) was 19 years old (he flunked a year) but was a Senior at his school.
Given Riki didn't graduate for a year, the average expectation would be that he "would have" graduated at age 18. By that average most Sophomores would be 16 years old (estimated for Kunio himself, assuming he kept his grades up and didn't skip or flunk a grade).
