Don't just look online or read/listen to books. Interview professionals. Call their office, hospital, police station, etc. Tell them you're writing a novel and you need to do a ride-along or interviews.

Deputy Robert Mirabal is the technical advisor for THE OUDERKIRK HOUSE. I did a ride-along and interviewed him as we raced to a break-in, then patrolled all night. Island County Sheriff's Department features heavily in OUDERKIRK. I wanted them to be shown as the small island heroes they are. I'm including him in my acknowledgments and dedication for the novel.

Interviews are easy. Just have your questions in mind, or even written down, then take copious notes of everything they say. You never know what you might need to use in your novel. Enjoy it. Talking to people was the best part of my job as a journalist and foreign correspondent. You'll just be doing your job, after all!

This paper is currently 2500 words. One of the introductory sections is still entirely in bullet points. The main body is maybe a third done. To finish the one part of the main body that I have written a good chunk of, I need to ask my advisor for recommendations of resources on nineteenth century Ottoman art. The paper is on a D&D module.

This isn't even technically an assignment. I don't have to turn this into anybody. I am just doing it.

I feel like I've seen a lot of "Empress Padme" or "Sith Padme" stories where Padme's gets pushed to a breaking point and becomes evil or convinces herself into doing evil things in the name of justice, and while that's all entirely valid, I feel like I need more Empress SATINE stories.

Because Satine is, canonically, someone who is absolutely willing to go for torture and wrongful imprisonment when pushed far enough. She is someone who will performatively destroy things just to prove that she's "against corruption." Satine is someone who will see the consequences of her own choices happen and refuse to take an ounce of responsibility for it.

So I can absolutely see Satine becoming a violent tyrant while convincing herself and telling everyone else that she's just getting rid of corruption, she's just doing what has to be done. She will purify the world and anyone who tries to get in her way is just part of that corruption and will be eliminated.

Like maybe this is in an AU where she doesn't die during the attack by Maul and Death Watch, she manages to survive, but then she lives through the rise of the Empire and instead of being deposed by Gar Saxon, she fights back and fights back hard enough that Mandalore gets glassed early. And that pushes her to a breaking point because she REFUSES to let her people just... scatter, she WILL hold them together if it's the last thing she does, and she WILL get vengeance on the Empire for what it's done to Mandalore.

And poor sweet pacifist Duchess Satine just spirals further and further into her own darkness, convinced that she's just doing what she has to, swearing that it's necessary in the name of justice. But if her own people start questioning her, if they try to stop her, well they're probably spies for the Empire and she's promised to take out the Empire as vengeance for what was lost.

the thing with doing any worldbuilding for the Avengers x THG crossover is that I do in fact have a PhD in Roman history and the THG universe is pretty unsubtly based on ancient Rome.

this raised my overall GPA to a 3.12. which it's a little sad that i'd been struggling so much prior to this past year (from unmedicated adhd & having to work a fucking job while in school) bc i probably Could have had a really high overall GPA. this past year proved that i *can* be a good college student. but Oh Well. i can be proud of what i've accomplished in this past year at least. and i can be proud of going from academic probation a year ago to getting straight A's in my final semester of college. and managing to raise my GPA up to a 3.12. still an accomplishment!!!

you don't know how much this made me smile!! i'm . . i'm four pages and 1400 words in. I don't even know what came over me this morning, because this literally couldn't be a busier, more inconvenient time to get into writing a fic but i just couldn't help it!!

you didn't ask for details but ... permission to yap?? i'm having so much fun writing them both in their 20's. i'm not usually a backstory girl, but i wanted to dig into their history because 1) we know they have a rich history together and 2) apparently the writers imagined that they were rivals before they were friends?? and so naturally i thought ... what if they hooked up before they became rivals before they became friends before they became co-dads to the pittsburgh trauma medical hospital. what then.

so, anyways, they're meeting in a sweaty lil gay club in the summer of '97 before robby leaves pittsburgh for his residency in nola and abbott enlists. and then, if i have the spoons (fingers crossed) and anyone gives a shit (fingers doubly crossed), I'd like to write their reunion in their 30's (part 2) and how their relationship shifts and changes up through the present (part 3)!! and if i'm any good at getting any of this done, i'm hoping it'll be sappy and emotional and saucy and full of pining (my fave)

For those who have been through grad school and Have Opinions, I need some advice.

So I was asked to teach a class (fully teach and manage) in the fall. I was already concerned about this because I know I don't lecture well off the slides I was given, so I'll be reorganizing all the material just so it flows nicely in my style. There are also a few syllabus things to edit just because they confused the students last year.

I went to my advisor and told them I was worried about this (did not specify why, just that I was concerned about the amount of work because I thought knowing I'd rearrange things a little was implicit) and I think they meant to be comforting by saying so long as I don't try to change the material, it would be fine.

After talking with a post-doc, they said "no fucking way" should I do this, and especially for a first time teaching, I will have no time for research. And also question the ethics of me teaching in the first place given my only official qualifications are a pass from my advisor and I Read A Lot. I asked my committee member for a second opinion, and they also had the same reaction of WTF and told me not to do it- but specified if I did want to do it, to be prepared it'll be an enormous time sink and very difficult.

I don't mind the difficulty, and if I'm going to learn to teach classes, there's literally no better class for me to teach. But I am extremely worried about non-archaeology research being demanded from me at the same time, and concerned my advisor does not actually see the mountain of what they're asking me to do.

To add another layer of complications on this, I'd rather fucking die than let The Professor Who Shall Not Be Named come back and teach this class- who is the only alternative option to my advisor. The whole reason they asked me to do it was because the department doesn't want to invite her back either. Plus, I could probably do shitty 15 minute lectures and still be a better teacher. So if I don't teach, the class is canceled.

How can I tell my advisor 'this task is way too big for me unless you take other things off my plate?', and/or 'if you don't want to remove the other things from my plate, we should probably cancel the class?'

I'm also kind of searching for third and fourth opinions on the whole situation in general. ^^"
