Mutant/monster AU @megnattsworld and i came up with

Lance is a merfolk who transforms into fish form when he touches water a la that new Luca movie coming out this summer

Pidge is a technopath like the olkari

Neither of them know this about the other until later.

Hunk has pretty wings

Keith presents more galran traits

Shiro is fully human at birth but has been experimented on by both galrans and other humans now so he's like captain america and the winter soldier combined

Allura and Coran have no idea what humans are supposed to be like and just assume this is some weird kinda human polymorphism

Hunk and Lance don't tell each other right away. Instead, Hunk finds out about Lance when he accidentally walks in on Lance in the shower, like

Hunk: hey where's the–stop screaming it's–oh that's why you're screaming

Hunk: hey don't worry check this out *takes off shirt and shows off his pretty wings*

And after that whenever Lance sees a pretty Pidge girl he's like "Hunk be my wingman–I mean, not WINGman haha but like you know" and Hunk just sighs

Keith has been showing signs of his half-alien form for a while and that's part of why/how he got kicked out and hermited himself

Shiro is a well-documented experiment that was unofficial and kinda a secret until a big scandal right after his disappearance on Kerberos, so they all know before they know you know

Pidge meanwhile is pretty human-passing and doesn't reveal until like halfway through season 1 when they're like "how did you do this techy thing you did" and she's like "oh yeah i told you im a girl but also im a technopath"

Allura and Coran think they're all normal humans (with severe anxiety issues and imposter syndrome and such) and the paladins let them believe that and that certainly wont have repercussions in 6 seasons

Necromancer - Shklance

Dudessss. If ya’ll are still here for stories, you’re literally the best humans. I think it’s been months, what with mental health issues followed by the corona (because of course I would be “essential personnel” and of course they increased our weekly hours to over 50) followed by the start of the semester, but I’ve been working on this off and on for a few weeks now, as well as some original stuff. So if you guys are interested in my original works, lemme know and I’ll post some of it. Who knows maybe it’ll motivate me to actually finish one of my books.

Also, this is super rough, so be nice to me. I’m playing around with some ideas here, so feedback is appreciated, and let me know if you want more of this au cause I haven’t decided anything with it yet.

           Here’s the thing. The gods are real. Or at least someone’s gods. Or maybe they’re just god-like? Anyway, some clarification. Everyone agrees that these aren’t like any of the gods we recognize. They don’t quite match any of our religions (and boy did that infuriate Lance’s grandmother), and they weren’t like Zeus, or Anubis, or Odin, or any others we know of from legends. In fact, they’re more like the monsters of myths.

             And even further, they’re absolute dicks.

             With all their incredible power, they thought it would be prudent to impart some of their stupid gifts to us mere mortals, and in the process, they ruined Lance’s life.

             See, only a small percentage of humans were given a gift. Most of them were young adults, some teenagers. Supposedly some children will manifest as they mature, but the short of it was, Lance was the only one in his family to get one. Most of his family tried to be understanding and sympathetic about it, but some were jealous, others wary, and all of them were making Lance feel more alone than ever before.

              At least his best friend kinda understood. He’d been blessed by the shifter-god (as in god-who-can-shift, not god-that-shifters-worship). A fairly common gift by now, but still a useful one. Not to mention how cool it was. But, Hunk’s girlfriend Shay had been blessed, too, and was currently in attendance at the new Supernatural school with Hunk and Lance. Since the first day, the perfect couple had easily been able to make friends with the other students in their sections, even their dorms. Most still startled around Lance, but he was becoming used to that. One of these exceptions was a girl named Pidge. Well, her name was actually Katie, but she preferred to go by Pidge. She and her brother were geniuses, so they were great with Hunk and Shay, and tolerant of Lance, but he’d take what he could get.

              Besides, Pidge and her brother Matt – technopaths – were almost impossible to mock, because they were actually childhood – best – friends with Lance’s roommates, the hotshot vampire powerhouse couple of the school. Usually, students were grouped by their gift; in the dorm, they were for their comfort and safety. So far, the three of them were the exception. Of course, because the gods apparently hated Lance, he was one of those, because he was one of the only non-vamps in the dorms. Due to the nature of their existence, people naturally sough to avoid vampires, and they responded by forming their own nests, once again, carefully excluding Lance. Because even at a school of freaks, weirdos, and the powerful, Lance was of the worst.

              Lance was a necromancer.

              A surprise to his family and to Hunk, because they always referred to him as a sunshine boy, always commented on his happy, goofy nature and attitude. Even with the dark nature of the gift, Lance remained his cheerful self – for the most part – for the first few months, but the constant abuse and isolation was starting to wear on him, and Lance knew it. He just couldn’t tell if he cared. No one else did, right? His old friends were having the time of their lives. Even Hunk had yet to see past the mask Lance had taken on. All the other students were content to ignore or mock him, and even Lotor, the only other necromancer at the school, was enjoying the process of crushing Lance, both in the classroom and out. Lance was barely surviving.

              And honestly, he probably wouldn’t be if it weren’t for his roommates. As fuckin’ weird as they were, even for vampires they had been kinder and more aware of Lance and his challenges than anyone else lately. When Lance was too drained physically and emotionally to go down for dinner, Keith brough t tray of food up to him, full of only human food and none of the blood the vampires included in their meals. And Lance hadn’t missed how Shiro sometimes was there to help Lance to and from classes, cheerfully carrying on a very one-sided conversation and effectively ensuring that Lance didn’t feel alone all the time. And even when they were alone in their dorm room studying, both of them did their level best to keep Lance included in their discussions. They refused to let him hide in his bedroom, which he had all to himself, as the previously assigned roommate refused to live with a necromancer. Instead, they dragged him out to the common room to study and then watch movies with them. Literally, Keith dragged him kicking and screaming that first time.

              Sometimes, Lance wished that they weren’t so determined to draw him out and be his friend. Like now, for example.

Sometimes, Shiro will announce a mandatory movie night and sleepover – seriously, having primarily nocturnal roommates was weird – and Lance always tried to duck into his room. Or sneak back out once they were wholly engaged in whatever movie they chose.

“Lance,” Shiro spoke with utter calm, but Lance froze as if he’d been threatened. While Shiro didn’t look up from his movie, Keith did, making direct contact with Lance, who bit his lip and glanced at the den and then looked back at Keith. Keith raised an eyebrow. “Bat got your tongue, Lance?”

              It took him a minute, but Lance found his voice. Not that it was gonna do him any good. “Ummm… I just… have some homework to finish, so…”

              “That would mean that when you said you were done at dinner, you lied,” Keith observed. Shiro reached for the remote. “Pull it out here, then, I have some reading I could do, too.”

              Lance looked horrified at the thought of ruining their plans. He floundered, “No! Uh, you don’t have to do that! I can study on my own, it’s fine!” But Shiro was grabbing their books now, Keith watching Lance carefully. “Okay! Fine! I don’t have any homework!”

              Shiro brightened immediately. “Good! Then c’mere so we can finish the movie; I wanna see how it ends!” How the hell could this giant, terrifying creature of the night be such a pup???

              Lance managed a weak smile at the sight, “Well, I’ve already seen it, so I’ll probably just go to bed, but you guys should definitely stay and watch!” He shot a wary look at Keith, who was shaking his head.

              “Lance, you’re just as nocturnal as we are. Nearly all your classes are at night. And you’re a night owl, anyway. So what’s the big deal?”

              “Don’t you guys ever get sick of it?” Lance finally burst out.

              Shiro and Keith looked at him cautiously. “What are you talking about, Lance?”

              “Come on, Shiro, look at me! The Reaper and all that bull, there’s no way you guys actually want to spend time with me! And even if you did, don’t you ever want just some time with Keith? Well, I’m trying to give that to you, except you guys won’t let me just leave so that I can leave you to it, and oh my God you probably hate me so much for taking up so much of your time, and I can’t believe I did this to you I’m so sorry, I-I just, I can’t, ugh, just let me—” But before Lance could dart for the door, Keith caught hold of his wrist, his own abilities coming in handy to keep ahold of Lance, even as the pictures on the walls and lamps rattled dangerously as Lance’s own powers spiked, black fog seeping out from beneath him. Lance’s eyes were tightly squeezed shut, and Shiro was careful as he approached and put a hand on Lance’s arm.

              “Lance. We like spending time with you, promise.”

              But Lance just shook his head, sobs now wracking his whole body. Keith let out a soft noise, drawing Lance close enough that he could wrap him up in a hug. Shiro enveloped them both, wrapping his arms around Keith’s back, and protecting Lance’s back as he did so. This close, Shiro didn’t need heightened senses to hear Keith whispering reassurances in Lance’s ear, and Shiro let himself join, knowing from past experience that the way his chest “rumbled” would help to soothe Lance further, and soon enough, Lance was swaying as his exhaustion hit him. Keith and Shiro worked together to maneuver Lance down the hall and into their own bed. They knew that this wasn’t going to solve all of their problems, but at least they could be there for their brilliant, bright boy tonight.

Voltron 8.4

Oh man, seeing Olkarion getting destroyed hurt almost as much as watching Earth get attacked last season. I really loved those nature-technopaths. I hope Ryner got away, but it seems like maybe she didn’t.

I did love Pidge having visions, though. That was really cool. It made me think of my fantasy AU, where she’s the guardian of the Prime Material Plane. Now I wanna write that again.

It sucks SO HARD that Honerva deceived the Altean survivors into destroying another planet. That just... It’s so evil. It makes me feel kinda sick to my stomach.

Okay but... Voltron Sky High AU

Adopted Broganes where Keith hasn’t gotten his powers yet and doesn’t know what his parents’ powers were so he’s kinda just accepted that he’s probably never going to get powers

It’s a really touchy subject so he refuses to talk about it

Shiro tries to comfort him but it doesn’t really help when he’s the most famous superhero of their time

Shiro has super strength (which can be kinda problematic sometimes because he really really didn’t mean to rip the door from its hinges again)

Seriously I can’t tell you how many times they’ve had to replace furniture/doors/walls from whenever Shiro gets a little too excited

patience yields focus

Pidge has plant powers just like Layla, but doesn't like to use them. They prefer sticking to tinkering with technology and being a 15-year-old super genius without the help of powers thank you very much

Lance has the ability to waterbend (don’t fight me on this)

He’s still getting the hang of it (kind of like Katara), hence why he’s put in the Sidekicks class

Hunk is a technopath who can do that awesome thing where he can put technology together with his mind, but he prefers doing that kinda stuff by hand (Pidge is always whining about how Hunk is wasting perfectly good powers and can’t they please swap?!)

He’s still magical with food and that might as well be his superpower (Lance’s words whenever Hunk makes his famous puff pastry)

The school bullies are none other than Lotor and his generals

Lotor has super intelligence, making him the ultimate strategizer and master mind

Acxa can read minds, so also major strategist

Ezor can turn invisible (duh) and maybe has super elasticity?

Zethrid can grow in size (think Antman: the bigger or smaller she grows, the stronger she gets)

Narti can see through Kova and has super speed (hence her amazing attacks in practical classes)

Keith is put in the “Hero Support” (ahem, Sidekicks) class with the rest of the paladins (sans Shiro)

Their teacher is Coran who was Alfor “The King”’s sidekick

Alfor is the one who created Sky High, wanting heroes of all kinds to develop and hone their skills for the greater good

Allura is the headmistress now that her father has passed on

She can travel in time. She very rarely uses her power unless it's of the utmost importance

she’s constantly fighting with the idea of going back and saving her father, but she knows that that could alter the present (either for the greater good or it could end up having extremely terrible repercussions)

angst for days pretty much

Shiro and Coran (and later the rest of team Voltron) = Allura protection squad

She also has the mice who she can telepathically communicate (thanks to her mother’s power of being able to speak with animals)

Shiro pops in every once in a while to visit Matt who teaches the Heros class along with Slav

I don’t really know what Matt’s power could be... definitely something to do with science and/or astrology on the side

Slav is extremely smart/can predict the future

subsequently, he is obsessed with parallel universes

Shiro really likes visiting Matt, the only downside is Slav doesn’t know when to take a hint and would he please just leave the lovebirds alone

Let’s just say major mutual Miro pining since their high school years at Sky High

Everyone knows about their feelings except them

And by everyone, I mean the entire school

Pidge has to physically stop themself from smashing their heads together because holy quiznak just kiss already

Enter cafeteria scene where Keith and Lotor get on each other’s nerves

Turns out Keith’s a pyrokinetic and has firepower

Keith gets moved to Hero class, Lotor’s Lotor etc. etc.

During the practical exercise of Villains vs. Heros Keith is paired with Lance. They’re up against Ezor and Narti (yikes)

Keith is still getting used to his power so he relies more on his hand-to-hand combat skills, although he starts using his fire power as the game gets more serious

Narti is doing her speed thing around Keith so he can’t breathe (and hence, can���t use his fire power) and Lance saves him with some kick ass waterbending

suffice to say they argue over it because Keith doesn’t like owing people debts

and so rivalry turns into friendship turns into something more (we all know the drill)

We learn that Lotor is Zarkon’s son, who was Alfor’s greatest enemy and also his killer (surprise surprise)

Lotor’s planning on bringing his father back with some or other quintessence ray perhaps? I don’t really know how to slot in that part of the story line

but just imagine the banter between the group and Allura being a sassy badass and Coran being the amazing mentor that he is

Constant Shiro/Matt blushy fluffy (and sometimes not so fluffy) flirting in the background (and maybe in the foreground every once in a while too)

pretty much it's the avatar/high school/super hero au no one asked for

I really need to write this fic (as well as finish the Treasure Planet AU I’ve got going)

Quick question about the superhero au? Does it have, at some point, one of those plots where there's an alternate reality/dimension where everyone in the team are supervillains because something terrible happened in their dimension that made them switch sides and now they're evil. Or at some point the team has to face their evil!versions from another dimension. I just see this plot in a lot of comics and I was curious about it.

[BARGES IN] DID SOMEONE SAY VILLAINS

okay so i thought about another alt. universe in the superhero au--where the team become villains right??? so!! half of the team are villains haha;;; so shiro and the holts (sam and matt) died in this universe, causing pidge and keith to change drastically. 

instead of keith joining the garrison to improve his powers, he was taken in by the blades of marmora, training him intensely as an assassin. originally, he was going to work for good but ever since shiro died--he had a change of heart and left the blades to find the killers who caused shiro’s demise.

pidge mourned over her father and brother--her family life wasn’t so happy since they died, especially with her mother. pidge was driven to the point where she wanted revenge, pointing the blame at the garrison for not sending a hero in time to save her family. she let her technopathic powers take over in this universe.

lance and hunk aren’t villains in this universe! lance remains as sharpshooter but he’s not as ecstatic as the original. he’s more tired and worn due to his idol’s death. hunk is like his “oracle” and hacks systems for lance.

PIDGE: My eye glows whenever I use my technopathic powers! Also it helps me see the insides of the tech--looking at circuits and such. It’s kinda fun to scare Lance and Hunk whenever I do it, hehe.

Ok, I just wanted 2 say that I live your voltron evolution au. Plus. What would Podge be. Definitely something planet.

Pidge evolved to a Cervari (a cybernetic space faun species) who are technomancers and part sentient machine so she can telepathically connect with the ship and her lion over significant distance. She and Shiro have the strongest bonds with their lions because of his telepathic and her technopathic natures. In fact, Pidge generally knows what’s wrong with a Lion who needs repairs before Alura does which makes things easier. Her horns (because she has little nubby horns) are what connects her to the technology. So on that planet where they manipulate plant matter like tech? They’d sing her praises probably.

I really need to finish more of my WIPs. Anyway, at one point I wanted to draw her being sparky glowy and I ended up with this ticked off Pidge ready to wreck some poor sap who messed with her team/family. I'm content with this.

I remember right up until Maven’s face-heel turn I was making a Kidge au of Red Queen.

Katie was Mare and thus Pidge Mareena. Name change, minor crimes, near-technopathic abilities? Sign me the fuck up.

Keith was Maven bc I had honestly thought Maven was good and also the whole “I’ll turn on my people bc what they’re doing is wrong” aspect. Also at the time Mare/Maven seemed endgame.

Matt was Shade… this made way too much sense after the reveal aka after I stopped being invested in it.

Lance was Kilorn - flirt, bff of Katie, has a connection to water

Lotor was Cal bc privileged heir to the throne who thinks he’s doing the right thing but is only helping privileged people

Allura was Farley bc rebel leaders (Allura more so than Farley). After I stopped being invested in this AU it got even better: 2/3 of Shalluratt and the daughter of one of the leaders? Dammit Maven, why did you have to go and mess this up?

The "Silvers" would have purple blood in this bc Galra, although golden is also cool bc it's the color of their eyes as well as unrefined quintessence.

I never came up with roles for Shiro and Hunk sorry boys

Voltron Psychic AU part 2

Pidge was so lost in the maze of code and data that was trying to keep her from creating herself that she almost didn't notice the strained prodding coming from the boys.

It wasn't until Hunk shouted, with a feeling somewhat reminiscent of crumbling rock, that she jolted out of the green-tinged technopathic haze and paid attention to their mental voices.

"We got him." Keith said, and he felt like a flickering candle in a too strong breeze.

"Only for a couple of minutes," Lance confirmed, "but we got him, and we know where they're going."

"Sort of." Hunk said, his voice tired, like he'd tried to argue against them before and lost. "We have a vague direction, with no idea about how fast they're going."

"Are you getting Blue?" Pidge asked, "You're going after them, right?"

"Shiro said not to." Keith said quietly, and Pidge simmered.

"We aren't listening to him, right? Tell me we aren't going to listen to him."

"Of course not!" Keith exploded, then abruptly settled, guilt rolling off of him in waves. "But we can't go after him directly, either. Not with only one lion."

Pidge's mind raced, ideas and counter ideas and ways to beat those ideas racing through her mind almost faster than she could think.

Keith obviously wanted to get the rest of the lions. That was fine, that was good, even. The bond each of them had with their respective lion would lead them straight to their resting places. The only problem would be avoiding the castle of lions until after they had Shiro, or else Allura might just try to pilot Black herself. And as driven and self sacrificing and great as Allura was, she wasn't Shiro. There'd be way less chance of them forming Voltron with her as the leader.

"Can we do that?" Lance asked, obviously having caught at least part of her train of thought, "Avoid Allura and the castle, I mean. Don't we need the castle to be able to wormhole?"

"No," Hunk said, and showed them a flash of memory, "Blue wormholed us before, remember? When she kidnapped us the first time?"

"She didn't kidnap us!" Lance jumped to his lion's defense, "It was just a field trip! That she took us on! Without asking. And didn't bring us back... Um. Shit."

Pidge cackled at Lance's sudden discomforture, sending agreement to Hunk. "Blue did, but that doesn't mean that the others can. We'd all have to ride with Lance and Blue to find our lions."

"I'm fine with that." Keith said, and Lance snickered at him.

"Yeah, but you won't even have to go looking for Red. We just need to get you within the same star system and Momma Cat's gonna come busting out of wherever she is just to check you over for new bruises!"

Burning logs broke, and Keith's mental presence shot out, shoving Lance's mind sideways so that his senses scrambled and for a brief moment his feeling of outrage was heavily tinged with the scent of spaghetti sauce.

Pidge fell over sideways, muffling her laughter with her pillow so that her mom wouldn't have to come up to try to figure out what was going on.

"So I'm not going to be enrolling in GG, then." She said, and reached out to wipe the last half hour of work out of existence. "You'll have to pick me up. Do we know which lion we're going for first?"

"Yours," Keith said firmly, "You said that you didn't have any trouble getting her, and that the planet was peaceful?"

"Um, yeah." Pidge said, stunned, and got what felt like a firm nod back.

"Then we're heading for her first."

"Yeah, I'll need some serious back up to get to Yellow," Hunk agreed, and Lance howled in protest. "Hey! I thought I did really good covering for you last time!"

"And yet, we still both almost died!" Hunk shot back, and Pidge rolled her eyes, reaching out to find the best coordinates within walking distance and then sending them to Keith, who memorized them with a wry feeling and a whispered guarantee that they'd be by to pick her up soon.

That little chore taken care of, Pidge was left with a dilemma. It was ten thirty at night on a Tuesday, she supposedly had school the next day, and she absolutely refused to spend any more time in space without her energy drinks than she already had.

And so, Pidge found herself sneaking out of her house to do the last thing she ever thought she'd be sneaking out of her house to do.

She was going shopping.

I am still not caught up on all the fics I’ve read that need to be commented on and recced. You might be getting another list in a few days, if I can keep up the momentum I’m currently on.

This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

Keith Doesn’t Have Time for Ghosts by aeruh for Forest_of_bread Words: 5,309 Author’s Summary: The Castle of Lions is haunted again, for real this time. Thankfully, Keith is a witch and knows how to deal with it. Unfortunately, he’s the only one who knows how to deal with it. My Comments: Keith’s approach to witchcraft and exorcism is absolutely hilarious. This was such a fun read from start to finish.

Breaking the Barriers by wingedflower Words: 4,277 Author’s Summary: A sequel to “Break Out, Break Down”. After Lance’s claustrophobia has casued him to collapse mid-training, Shiro decides it’s time for the paladins to have a heart-to-heart talk about their fears and phobias. My Comments: Sequel to a previously recced fic that’s one of my absolute favorites. It’s actually saved in my Favorite Fics folder at work so I can break it out when I’m feeling particularly in need some good Lance h/c. Anyway, this one is more focused on everyone else rather than Lance, but it’s still really lovely to see them all talking things out and supporting each other BEFORE it hits the fan.

BLUR by limeadepeels Words: 1,209 Author’s Summary: “Allura,” Lance says, “I don’t want you to freak out, okay?” “Why would I–” “You have a hole in your tummy,” Lance says like the soft words will minimize the seriousness of the situation. “I have my hands over it and I’m trying to seal it off. I need you to help me by not moving and not freaking out until we have an extraction, all right?” Allura does her part and stays very, very still. My Comments: Hurt Allura and comforting Lance is such a fantastic dynamic. I would love to see more like this from the fandom.

Precipitous by mongoose_bite Words: 1,933 Author’s Summary: Kolivan knows orbital decay when he sees it, and knows if too much force is applied to correct it the object will be flung into space, unrecoverable. Nevertheless, he resolves to try. After the events at Naxzela someone needs to talk to Keith. My Comments: Great fic with Kolivan taking pains to ground Keith after he almost flew off the rails. I’m a big fan of this sort of father-son interaction between these two.

Identity by Revasnaslan Words: 1,034 Author’s Summary: Cubs weren’t supposed to be up in the middle of the night, but Kolivan does his best to be patient with the ones that are. — Written for Keith Birthday Day 2 (Identity) My Comments: Very cute interaction between Kolivan and wee Keith.

Not Just Another Rescue by Eastofthemoon Words: 8,568 Author’s Summary: Keith spends some time with his new human friends at the mall. However, when he finds himself whisked away by Kolivan to return home, last thing Keith expected was for his new friends to come chasing after him. My Comments: Sequel to a previously recced fic in which the other paladins run across BoM Keith in a space mall and decide to befriend. I love the misunderstanding that fuels this one, and seeing Keith comfortable enough to be a brat with Kolivan was really cute and heartwarming.

The Lost Paladin by prettyshiroic (AnalystProductions) Words: 17,991 Author’s Summary: If he doesn’t leave, all of him will be reduced to cinders. But if he leaves, all of him will be undone. A course that he will choose to chart, no matter how it breaks his heart. It’s a battle that cannot be won.- Their names burn inside him, seared onto his soul. Black coal sits in the centre of his chest, fuelling a fire that was soon to be smothered by the very people that set it ablaze. My Comments: This is painful, but very well done. After the war is done and it seems like Voltron is going to disband, Keith leaves the team before they can leave him. Years together he’s found again, but it takes quite a bit of work to reconnect.

Safe Spaces by BluePlanetTrash Words: 1,620 Author’s Summary: Whenever Lance felt sick at home, he would find a small place to curl up until he felt better. Too bad the other paladins didn’t know this when Lance suddenly goes missing. My Comments: Cute little fic with everyone panicking over Lance, aww. He’s fine.

something wicked by ashinan Words: 8,206 (2/4) Author’s Summary: It’s been weeks since Shiro went toe to toe with the white haired demon in that old house. When the next haunted excursion leads the gang to a supernatural Bed and Breakfast, a new player makes itself known. My Comments: Sequel to a previously recced fic. This AU is so good. I love Shiro’s protectiveness, as always, though it’s a bit frustrating and I just want him to TELL the others what’s going on, holy crow. The spooky descriptions and action sequences work really, really well, and it’s just all around delightful to read and immerse myself in this story.

All Mirana Espinosa has left is her infant son and the memories of other times. All Colleen Holt has left is her teenage daughter and her husband’s collection of extraterrestrial paraphernalia. (This series can be read in any order.) My Comments: I really loved this canon-divergence AU built on the POVs of three parents who lose their partners, their foundations, and their children. The worldbuilding and character interactions were both fantastic and fascinating. Each story is satisfying alone, but reading all three really gives a sense of meat and heft to the world. I would happily read more in this ‘verse.

i used to recognise myself (it’s funny how reflections change) by watervld (helpmechildren) Words: 2,671 Author’s Summary: Everyone expects Lance to be with Hunk, because that’s the way it works; Lance and Hunk, side by side, taking down whatever bad guy stands in their path through excessive screaming and heartfelt reunions. Lance isn’t with him. Everyone starts to worry. My Comments: Lance disappears, and when he’s found again, he has amnesia and it’s years later. Bittersweet, emotional fic, kinda sticks in the brain. There’s a note of hope at the end, but it’s not a fluffy fic, just to warn you.

Two Inch Trust by SilverArson Words: 2,361 Author’s Summary: The Velqi have mastered transporting large amounts of material through small containers. When the paladins attempt to rescue victims of an illegal slave trade, Lance is trapped and they aren’t sure how to get him out. My Comments: A cracky premise treated seriously, which is the best way to do a cracky premise, sometimes. Anyway, Lance gets shrunk and stuck in a jar, and it’s more intense and scary than funny. Great protectiveness from the team.

Tastes Like Coffee by itsthevoid Words: 2,213 Author’s Summary: All Hunk has ever wanted was to live a normal life. Being a technopath who works at the most supernatural café in the word, that is all but impossible. At least Lance is still normal, even if he drinks Pumpkin Spice Lattes a bit too often. Or: AU where everyone is supernatural and works at an even more supernatural café, and neither Lance nor his coffee is what Hunk thinks it is. My Comments: The worldbuilding in this AU is fantastic, and the Hunk and Lance interaction is wonderful. I would happily read something much, much longer in this setting.

Matt feels the need to make amends. He’s not the only one.Fill for the “atonement” prompt on my hurt/comfort bingo card. My Comments: I wish we got something like this in canon, but fanfiction is great for filling in these emotional gaps.

sleep now, and dream of the ones who came before by prettyshiroic (AnalystProductions) Words: 1,746 Author’s Summary: Keith pulls his own strings, but his trembling hands can hold nothing right now. The final pieces of his composure slip, evade his reach. He trips, on the verge of his own unravelling. My Comments: Kolivan is a good dad. 4.01 missing scene.

Serenity by this_book_has_been_loved Words: 1,238 Author’s Summary: Lance has trouble sleeping, and decides to take a walk My Comments: I always love Pidge and Lance supporting each other.

Nightmares by luoup (ravenic) Words: 1,599 Author’s Summary: Day 1 Prompt 2: Nightmares Nightmare coping techniques My Comments: Cute and midlly bittersweet fic with the entire team coping together.

Icarus et Dea Tacita by DeerstalkerDeathFrisbee Words: 7,356 Author’s Summary: She’s drenched in blood; she’s literally cut open, how-? Keith doesn’t know, and the closer he is to her the more certain he becomes that he’s seen her before, that this is one of Lotor’s generals, but he knows he’s going to try to save her. No soldier or civilian left behind. Shiro’s taught him so much, but he learned that one from Pidge and Lance and Hunk.While on a mission for the Blade, Keith finds a dying Narti and saves her life. Friendship ensues. My Comments: What a fantastic premise. Keith and Narti form such an interesting and natural friendship, two people who don’t quite feel like they belong anywhere. It was a pleasure to watch them slowly figuring out how to relate to each other. The worldbuilding is great, too. I would be pleased if canon was something like this.

Of Tremors, of Quake, of Rushing Landslides, of Broken Vale by twilighteve Words: 12,268 Author’s Summary: Lance’s eyes widened. “Oh man. You’re like our own Toph from Avatar.” Hunk blinked, because that was actually a pretty accurate description of what he was feeling. “I’m like Toph,” he echoed, a smile on his face. Hunk discovers his powers and beats a bunch of giant alien insects with the team. Also, he cusses alien badgers a storm. My Comments: Part of a series in which the paladins discover they have elemental powers. I love to see Hunk coming into his own in this. The worldbuilding is great and the action and adventure aspects are super fun, and protective Hunk is fantastic. Just a really, really fun read.

Number One Fan by Araloth Words: 4,255 Author’s Summary: Lance discovers a forum for fans of Voltron after one of their shows and can’t help diving into it. My Comments: Absolutely adorable. I loved how the mystery was solved in the end. Protective teammates are the best.

The Drifter by Bandity Words: 15,959 Author’s Summary: The team needs to figure out what’s wrong with Lance, before it’s too late. My Comments: Very cool fic with a great premise and fantastic execution. There are several scenes that were really memorable, and the worldbuilding is interesting and feels like a real place, if a bit spooky. Love Shiro and Hunk taking such a good care of Lance, as always. A great fic for Halloween. Going into my favorites, of course.
