I remember picking up Age of Wonders 2 and the book inside that was massive, detailing every single unit, faction, character, the lore, how to play the game, I think it basically had the campaign wrote out, and a recounting of Age of Wonders 1. Man I miss the days of getting a strategy game and getting super detailed guides and a fold out techtree to pin on your wall at a minium. I do also miss the leaflets that told you about the other games made by the same company/or in the same genre. And if you got any of those big books in colour? Holy shit it was basically a gift from god (at least in the UK colour huge manuals tended to be rare). Damn I need to track down my Tiberium Sun and Red Alert 2 big box pc games my dad bought back in the day.

This is essentially the developer's judgement on how important a given technology is relative to its cost. So players who think the tech tree is "too big" or "boring" can go nuts and make their own. And with the mods directory, you'll be able to share it with other people. Think of Galactic Civilizations as a giant mod on a fairly generic 4X game engine. You can make it into anything you like without being a techie. This is where all the components are stored. You can make your own hulls, ship parts, extras, etc. The parts you would care about are the Model and the thumbnail. The S and the number in the models directory determines which Style the hull is. That way, you can make some things that are only available for certain races. But bear in mind, if you add it here, you need to provide styles for other races unless you use the S99 at which point it's available for everyone. This is where the player race data is stored. You can modify the various races as you wish. You can change the names, the graphics, the abilities, etc. For example, let's say you want to have really huge fleet battles in GalCiv II. To heck with balance. Then you could go back to the gc2types. Tiny hulls could still use 2. Small 4. Medium 8. Large Huge 20 as an example. Then you could load up the techtree. Then you could really see your ultimate battles where there's hundreds of fighters, a few frigates and a couple of mother ships battling it out. Just make sure you have a powerful system. This is where all the conversations are stored. They are based on morality, context and whos talking to who. That means the name of the speaking race, in this case Drengin Empire. The numbers of the races are found at the Commonly used numbers page. This file is already pretty well documented. You can add more improvements or tweak the ones that are there. Korea is probably OP. You can not have little science and thats the biggest advantage - regardless if you are going for a science victory, which is probably well possible before turn 230, or any other victory condition, because I never managed to research the full techtree in a culture game. I could even build thermonuclear devices, in case Lautaro or the Khmer had stupid ideas.

The game was not easy though, because I was behind. Far behind. I built my first art museum at TURN 142.  That is probably the latest art museum I ever built. Well, I had to wipe out Shaka, he attacked me first. And then Brazil had the genuine idea to join a emergency situation against me. I took the beautiful Reciffe and Rio and I could start to build finally something -  turn 110 or so. Well then of course Lautaro had to attack, who not only the highest score civ, but was throughout the entire game the strongest military civ. Luckily he crashed into my five level 6 crossbows, which made it impossible to get one of my cities.

I built a giant air force - just because air force is so much fun. I mean: get 6 aircraft carriers, 8 jet bombers, 4 fighters and you can travel wherever you want and bomb everything you get in sight.

In the end I became friends with Lautaro and declared Javavajvavyyavarahan to our enemy and razed his cities like mad.

Korea is just fun to play.

So magic suppression started as a way for the Crown to undermine a political rival, and now looks suspiciously similar to the American school system. It definitely works on an allegorical level.

It sounds like they do have some defenses against mind control, if they've managed to seal at least one mind controller. Details on that would be interesting from a player standpoint, given the heist film vibes D&D is somewhat geared for.

I'm imagining the 'speak with animals' techtree has a role in detection, since Charm Monster is higher level than Charm Person. Possibly their high-level folks also have amulets of protection from evil, given that they have antimagic shackles? It doesn't seem like Artifice is restricted quite the same way as spells.

Also, if you actually like story recs, I'll give you one of the webcomic links I was thinking about in my original ask: Aurora. It's basically a JRPG plot if the first three party members have their own distinct apocalypse plotline, and while I don't think it's super relevant to your project, I think you might enjoy it.

You are literally the best person in the history of ever. My campaign is my baby I can and will talk about it for hours. Be warned this will be very long.

So the entire thing is set In a semi-modern fantasy world. With modern appliances that are powered magically (and non magically in some cases) The government is set up similarly to that of Naruto, in that different services are requested by people in the community,ranked by difficulty, and handed out to “ninja” but the ninja in this case are students. The head of the government however is closer to a bloodline monarchy, then the military dictatorship that is in Naruto.

Anyway this allows the players to get room outside of the school, and means I don’t have to develop full curriculums for these fuckers.

Additionally I altered the entire dnd class system to turn them into actual school classes. I had a blast making each individual one and defining how they interact and differ from one another.

Differing even further from traditional dnd is the magic system. Which brings up the topic of what inspired this campaign. A book called “upside down magic” by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins. Specifically the first book being I never had the opportunity to read the rest the book series.

The magic system in the books lies in 5 main types of magic. (Fire, Flight, animal shifting, turning thing’s/people invisible, and talking to animals) and the conflict within those that don’t fit these boxes segmented by the society around them. Some of the traditional powers were altered or changed to better emphasize the fantasy vibes or to equal out power levels.

Many elements are taken from the book. But the most prominent being the magic. Restricted casting is applied to everyone, and the party members have “upside down” or abnormal magic. Some examples from their characters being; seeing ghosts, changing their physical appearance to match other people, communicating with animals (and people) telepathically, and more!
