As a fellow autism what’s your experience with special interests. I have never seemed to have one and i feel like im not doing something right.

I also used to think I didn't have special interests, until I realised they didn't have to be about memorising facts or knowing everything about something or always wanting to talk about it. I didn't realise things like drawing or playing games could be a special interest because they techinically fall under 'normal' or 'socially acceptable' hobbies. But they do count, because of the amount of time I spend engaging with them or thinking about them, the fact that I use them to regulate and reduce stress and can become extremely distressed if I'm not able to do them, how important they are to me in my daily life etc. I just tend to focus on doing things over talking about them or categorising them.

That said, although having a special interest is part of the criteria for an autism diagnosis, it's not actually required. Not every autistic person has a special interest, and that's totally fine! There are lots of different ways to be autistic.

Just as any other day, Yelena is on her daily run. Up main street, around the fountain, pass the hotdog stand, go through the alley way, and go home. As usual, she checks her mailbox. A few newspapers, and a few envelopes. Probably nothing important. She walks by a pile of rubbish, like cardboard and paper piles at a dead area of grass to be burnt into a fire later, and takes the more important looking ones back inside to her little cabin in the middle of the woods.

“IRS, Geico, Home Depot remembered my birthday, and what is this…?”

She takes a deep breath, and walks into her kitchen. Wanting to save the wax for whatever reason, she cuts around it and puts it into a little bowl with more wax stamps, and the paper inside reads this.

She groans a little “Why can’t I just sit at home and get drunk and enjoy my stupid life until I die?” She complains as she searches her janky kitchen, eventually finding a sharpie, and writing her signature on the blank line.

Almost immediately after, Yelena gets a message on her phone, “The address to your safe house near the intelligence agency is linked to this message. You will find your partner there.”

She curses at herself again. Not only is some asshole being… well, an asshole, but she also needed a partner? Whatever.

She packs some stuff, weapons and gear, and throws them in the back of her truck before driving to the disclosed location, leaving the signed paper in her mailbox, and sends a friend a text.
