JET Results: I'm In!
I got my results last week and I still can't believe it; I got accepted as a shortlist candidate for 2023! I don't know what area I'll be placed in yet, but I explained in my interview that I didn't have any preferences aside from somewhere with reliable public transport since I don't have a driver's license (though I mentioned I enjoy biking and wouldn't mind biking to work lol)
Tumblr media
Right now I'm in the middle of getting my background check in order, and after that the next two things due at the end of next month are my Certificate of Health and JET Accident Insurance form. I also want to talk to my doctor and psychiatrist about the medical form I need for my prescriptions and arranging for as big a supply as I can bring overseas. Also I'm doing my taxes for the first time which is a pain in the ass, but it's another adult rite of passage I guess.
Informally, mom and I are talking about shopping for work clothes once we get told where I'm flying to, and she insisted on us having a celebration dinner at some point before I leave. I also want to spend some time with my best friend of over a decade before I fly out since I'm gonna miss him so much, so I need to get that arranged as well. There's also the matter of arranging for a phone I can use overseas, as well as a debit or credit card, and once I get more info from my consulate I'll look into a Japanese bank account since my US branch doesn't work outside the country. I've got plenty of savings to use when I first get to Japan but I'd rather not have to bring it all in cash on the flight lmao.
Oh and welcome presents! I want to make a good first impression with my future coworkers, students, and neighbors in Japan, so I'm trying to brainstorm what Texas-based/themed thing would make good presents. Any ideas?
Congratulations to all my fellow JETs and CIR applicants who got accepted!

"Free tutor support"
tefl online pro review, submitted by Jillian. I notice many of these TEFL programs charge extra for tutor support but tefl online pro includes the support for free as part of the course package. Job assistance support and help with any work visa questions were also included in the price of the course, as was the extremely helpful advice I received about writing a resume specific to teaching…

man i've really gotten to this point of unemployment where i don't want to do what i've been doing for years because i never wanted to do what i was doing. but now i have absolutely no idea what i want to do. at all. and honestly zero motivation to figure it out. which is scary but also i think my depression has just really settled in at this point. yay. i don't know it just really fucking sucks. and i want to use this as an opportunity to move in a completely different direction but like ... how. and with what resources because i'm totally broke.

Finding an ESL Teaching Job as a Non-Native English Speaker
If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you may remember that last year, I volunteered teaching ESL for 2 weeks in Guatemala. I also wanted to make a career switch to ESL teaching. However, it didn’t happen. A few people reached-out to me with questions on how to find an ESL teaching job as a non-native English speaker. My first language is French. I was born and raised in France before coming to…
