Anybody else notice that if a Queer show isn’t American it is way more likely it’ll get another season?
That all the shows, say on Netflix, that are Queer and American are always bound to be cancelled, but then we have Sex Education, Heartstopper, Control Z (tho it’s rep is a little iffy), Elite, Young Royals, and hopefully Heartbreak High as well going strong.
I may be wrong, but this is something I’ve specifically seen when looking at Netflix.
Some more LGBTQIA+ media for you! There are so many great shows out there, here's a few to get you started if you're looking for some queer focused content! I'm currently rewatching Killing Eve but I'm also keen to watch the Interview with a Vampire series as I recently finished the first book.
Do you like any of these shows or have any other recommendations? I'd love to hear them so please let me know in the comments!
rewatching the series because it's been a minute since i've been in my sex education feels and i wanna be in the proper headspace for season four. anyway, this moment in 1.08 caught my attention -
- for the way it's reminiscent of maeve's introduction. we meet the legend of maeve wiley first, not the complex and beloved character we come to know, and her flipping off the untouchables during eric's monologue serves as a refusal to participate in this narrative. her peers can think what they think - she'll be maeve wiley the way she wants to be maeve wiley.
otis hasn't had so strong a backbone. over the course of the season, he lets down eric on his birthday and blames maeve for 'making him' question tom because he can't admit he'd prefer to be doing that in the first place and he lets jackson push him into compromising his friendship with maeve to jackson's advantage and he tries to have sex with lily until he's whipped into a panic because his father made him anxious about having not done it yet. again and again, he allows his fear and neuroticism to dictate his life - until the above moment.
like maeve defying the gossip-mongering, here otis is defying the literal narrative jean has committed to paper. his parents have both contributed to otis' crippling discomfort with sex - they built it into something of legendary proportions, something that has the power to ruin happy lives - and he's done letting that define him.
Possibly controversial opinion but I do not give a fuck
The shows Big Mouth and Sex Education are important, full stop.
Maybe you don’t like them, maybe you do, either way, they’re important.
They’re both shows about teenagers made for teenagers, and goddammit they have valuable information in there. The best sex ed I’ve ever had has been from these shows, and I know I’m not the only kid in this position.
And yeah, there’s sexual content, because for a lot of people being horny is a part of puberty, and puberty generally happens before you turn 18. It’s not sexualizing children, it’s showing other kids that the things they’re feeling are normal and not a problem.
Or, sometimes, they’re displaying things that are problems, like a yeast infection. The only reason I figured out that I had an infection a few years ago was because of the episode of Big Mouth where Jesse has one.
Additionally, both of these shows clearly show asexual representation, and they’re completely normal about it. Furthermore, they show different types of asexual representation, which is so important because not everyone experiences it the same way.
Both shows also have trans representation! Including nonbinary characters! And they aren’t weird about it, and they treat them like any other character in the show and discuss any issues they’re having with a relationship or sexuality normally!
And don’t even get me started on the bisexual and homosexual representation! There’s so much! And it’s all normal! Big Mouth even shows the struggles that can come with being gay in a Catholic household!
These shows are so much more than what people give them credit for, and it breaks my heart when people brush them off as being “purely sexual”. They’re so much more than sex, they’re love, they’re relationships, they’re struggles, they’re beautiful happy moments, they’re horrible sorrows, they are LIFE.
I started watching Sex Education recently and I gotta say I really like it! It's really funny and it has some really honest portrayals of real issues and idk I just enjoy it. I'm also a horny teenager so of course it's relatable or whatever, but it's really funny and Otis is so well meaning but such a trainwreck lmao
Anyway I'm only on season 1 atm but heads up that I might end up posting a bit about it
I'm watching sex education. I'm in early season 2 and i love it and theres so much ti discuss and unpack. I'm still learning names but I love different characters for different reasons but here goes.
So first, the dude who's dad is like their principal seems to be at this point not so much a typical bully but the vibe he's giving a vibe of a closeted guy with complicated feelings for Eric who he tortured and bullied for years for a likely related reason or he's so desperate for a friend. Poor dude. He's all messed up, and he has a shitty relationship with his dad. He can't escape him he's either at home battling his expectations and disappointmenting him at every turn or when he was in school miserable with him as his principal. Maeves ex reads Shakespeare so well with his tutor. I love their dynamic idk if she likes him romantically he's a very cool guy but I love this.
as for the principal, his poor wife is so sad. Otis mom who is now working the school suggested helping her get closer to her hubby and he shut her down when she tried to make the first move, I'm so sad for her. I hope she dumps his ass. She deserves to be happy. She can't leave her son she's gotta take him with her I'm afraid for her son living with her soulless hubby.
Maeves mom seems to be trying to be there for her and shes juggling alot as it is, she doesnt wanna see her daugter f up her life or make mistakes shes made in the past in dating or life. I find her to be someone who is trying and maeve should at leadt trt tonsee from her pov too bc she has wisdom and life experience. Its no doubt shes snart and hates wsking for help but sometimes she can't help others if she can't let others in. That's speculation tho.
Poor otis and his gf got cockblocked by maeves text I'm sure shes now jealous or suspect somethings going on. It's clear Ola (I think that's how her name is spelled) needs answers but I hope she doesn't pull the ultimatum card.
I wanted to say I love Aimee as of last episode from where i am, so much more than before, but she's amazing and she's growing so much especially after what happened to her on the bus. Maeve is so good to her, and i think they see each other as her best friend and decide to spend her birthday making her feel better. Good lord, season 2 is so good.
So much I can't wait to see and discuss. I highly recommend.
