Their name was Nex Benedict.
Nex Benedict, not whatever name the news keeps saying.
Nex used He/Him pronouns according to friends, not whatever the news keeps saying.
Nex was the victim of a hate crime. Nex's death was because of a hate crime. Nex's death was not an accident, it was a hate crime.

"In recent years, several laws targeting transgender adults have been proposed or enacted. These laws eliminate Medicaid coverage for transgender healthcare, permit pharmacists and hospital systems to discriminate against transgender patients, and impose restrictions on providers in various ways. Until recently, little information was available on how these new statutes affect transgender adults. While their care is often not explicitly prohibited, they may still experience disruptions due to anti-transgender laws. Now, a just released Data for Progress poll reveals that 24% of transgender adults have had their healthcare disrupted or discontinued as a result of anti-transgender legislation."
Start LOUDLY supporting your trans friends!!! Post pride flags! Remind everyone you're an ally! Make support for trans people so incredibly mainstream again that it's impossible to ignore!
It's not enough to support us silently while we're facing record amounts of legislation trying to make us illegal. You have to make sure they stop trying to hurt us.
Check the map below and please get to work on organizing to fight the bills being presented in your state!!!

To my trans friends, associates, and strangers:
Ever seen those posts online telling you that you're beautiful, and handsome, and awesome, and that not passing doesn't make you less human, less your gender? I've made a couple myself because it's true, but do you know why it's true?
For a while it flew over my head, but the reason is probably something many have not yet fully considered: that cisgender women, and men struggle to pass too.
In this world of idolized muscled and square-shouldered hunks, and hour-glass thin beauties, where do most cisgender men and women fall naturally? Outside of idolization. They too worry about their figure, their weight, their height, if they're too masculine, too feminine, or not enough. They too feel their nose is to big or too wide, jaw to wide or narrow, hips too wide or narrow, lips too big or thin, too much hair or not enough. When they look at those idolized metrics of beauty and masculinity, they too feel the pressure to reach for an extremely high bar, and they too feel the shame, depression, and distress when they can't reach it. When they don't pass for market defined pretty, beautiful, handsome, or hot.
We're not that different. We share the same problems. We are human.
So it is okay not to pass, it's okay to feel like you miss the mark. It is okay to fall short, because cis people aren't hitting that incredibly high bar half the time anyways either.
Beauty is an industry that preys on vanity, and sets goals deliberately to make you feel lesser to sell you products to 'get you there'. Make-up, protien-shakes, suppliment pills, face-creams, gimmicky exercise tools, etc. It is designed to make you feel ugly so it can sell you fake, marketable, packageable beauty. It lessens the value of your being purposefully to sell you product to feel what it defines as "normal". It should not define what makes a human being a man or a woman. The fact that it does and tries to, is a problem both Cisgender and Transgender people face equally.

PSA for other trans folks
I don't know which trans folks need to read / hear this today, but you do NOT need to:
• Have started or want to start HRT. • Have had or want to have any gender-affirming surgeries. • Be or want to be cis-passing. • Have or want to have a normative gender-expression.
& you aren't any less valid for being less further along in your own transition than others.
You are valid as you are 🏳️‍⚧️

Please do what you can to stop this bill from being passed, and please share this message where you can. It's going to be very bad for pretty much everyone on the Internet if this bill is passed. If you're skeptical: There are resources online with more information about the KOSA bill, including articles written by lawmakers explaining why this bill is a terrible idea. There is even a TechDirt article written by Mike Masnick titled "Marsha Blackburn Makes It Clear: KOSA Is Designed To Silence Trans People" where they write of and post a video in which Senator Marsha Blackburn (who co-wrote the bill) explicitly stated that this bill would be used to target the trans community. So please share this in your stories, with your family and friends, and call your Senators to tell them not to sign this bill. And if you know anyone in Massachusetts, tell them to call Senator Warren to ask her to withdraw her support of the bill. Thank you for your time and consideration.
EDIT - UPDATE:
Please read the post I linked below, it pertains to the status of the KOSA bill. Things are not looking good right now.
UPDATE #2:
Please look at this post!

Accepting that we are all going to repeatedly contract a virus that causes cumulative vascular damage, is accepting that the most vulnerable among us will die. Layered covid mitigations, starting with wearing a high quality respirator, says no to preventable infections and "acceptable" death.
Image Description: Dark grey and red text over a grey scale background. The background is an image of an N95 respirator. The dark grey text reads, "Say NO to preventable infections". Red text offset behind the grey text reads, "Acceptable death".

Never forget that we wouldn't have our rights without black trans people.
If you're a 'LGB without the T' person then you're a goddamn hypocrite. There is no sugarcoating that.
Remember Marsha P. Johnson and the many other trans people who fought for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Unpopular opinion, but you should not have to tell your partner that you are trans if you've fully medically transitioned before you met. Cuz everybody's always saying trans men are man and trans women are women, bc it's true, and if that's the case, and they have fully medically transitioned and have all the parts of the gender they identify with and that their partner sees them as then it should not matter. They have always been the gender that they are now they just had different physical body parts, so it should not matter, because that's in the past now.

Meeting other queer people irl made me realize how irrelevant online queer discourse is. My teacher was nonbinary and gay, no one cared. A girl in the hospital was a lesbian who liked guys, no one in the group of mainly cishetallos even batted an eye. Don’t let online discourse get you down because in the real world people don’t care.
