okokok so this is definitely the most weirdly specific question ive ever asked but does anyone know if the symmetrical worm enemies in terraria (eater of worlds, destroyer, bone serpent, etc.) flip to stay upright in the same way the asymmetrical ones (wyvern, blood eel, and phantasm dragon) do and we just cant tell bc their designs are symmetrical
#amicus.txt#terraria#ive been brainstorming some texture pack ideas and this is very important info that i dont have time/energy/ability to test#like to try and explain it differently:#in terraria the wyvern enemy's textures will often get mirrored while youre fighting it#this is because the wyverns texture is drawn from a side-view perspective; so theres a correct “up” orientation for it#so when it flips its doing that to prevent itself from being upside-down#which would obviously look weird for it to be flying around like that#this same principle applies to the blood eel and phantasm dragon enemies and the stardust dragon minion#the wiki lists these enemies as having the same ai type (Worm AI) as terrarias worm enemies. such as the Eater of Worlds boss#Eater of Worlds is drawn from a top-down perspective and not a side-view perspective. it also happens that it is symmetrical#so its left half looks the exact same as its right half#which also means that with the way it is drawn it cant really be “upside-down” in the same way a wyvern could#so if the Eater of Worlds was flipped in the same way the wyvern is then we wouldnt be able to notice#BUT since they are both listed as having the Worm AI type which would presumably contain the directions to have it flip#that might mean that its still flipping to keep itself “upright” even though it doesnt change anything#to prove this you would have to make a custom texture pack where the Eater of Worlds' texture is asymmetrical#and then test it by fighting it in a world#so for example if you drew a big R on each texture of Eater of Worlds' segments (head body and tail)#if it doesnt flip like the wyvern does then itll just look like an R at all times just at different rotations#but if it DOES flip then it would look like a Я at some points in the fight

I think I might have some form of colour synesthesia?
As in, whenever I play piano I have realised that I infact colour certain segments of a piece in my brain
#Sometimes the colours are actually in theme#Like if the song is from a movie or game it kinda matches#But also there's random as colours#And sometimes other visuals?#Like a segment in howls moving castle (merry go round of life) its light blue with laces#Also bc I remember listening to hl2 portal2 and astv osts and feeling textures in my brain if this makes sense#Do I have it?????#Bc also on the aphantasia scale or whatever I imagine shit with a black wash over it#Like ita difficult ish to see#Sometimes its really clear but yuh#Also bc I practise piano like every day I've noticed that the colours are consistent#AAAAAAA#Sorry if I'm like being weird idk#Can you have synesthesia bt also the aphantasia scale thingy idk

It seems like just the other day you were first experimenting with different brushes...#... to make your backgrounds feel truer to the ones in the show. And now you're making mini animations??#I am truly beyond amazed at how far you've come. You've gone from simple yet charming pencil sketches...#... to fully colored digital pieces with an assortment of visual textures and flashing/animated segments...#... within the course of A YEAR. That is AMAZING.🌟🌟🌟#I know I've said this before but with this new skill of yours all of your new pieces feel like they have a little spark of life...#... to them now - they feel more “alive” if that makes sense.#In the words of Jack King-Spooner “I am so so proud of you my genius.”💛

In the GameCube version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the collision model for the environment - very unusually - uses environmental textures. As the collision is never intended to be seen by the player and its visual appearance is merely a reference for the programmer while editing, the overwhelming majority of games leave it either single-colored or use simple color segments or development textures to signify different types of collision.
Since the collision is so simplistic compared to the actual visual geometry and its textures are stretched and misaligned, this produces the appearance of a corrupted early 3D (e.g. Nintendo 64) game when the collision is viewed by itself.
Top: Rogueport Plaza as it is seen in-game. Bottom: removing the plaza and viewing its collision model.

this is an Abacion, a member of one of North America’s most nicely textured millipede genera. they’re both very fast and also produce an extremely powerfully-scented defense chemical.

at first, it smells rather like horse manure, and almost unbearably so. but when harassed further this one produced beads of white substance from every segment, and this stuff had an added vanilla scent on top of the dunghill odor. now, after dissipating overnight, the container I kept this animal in smells oddly of chocolate.
…the funny thing being the container’s original purpose was to hold little Japanese chocolate candies, and I spent a long time trying to purge it of the chocolate smell. which just got added back by a stinky millipede

Snake-Mimicking Sphinx Moth (Hemeroplanes triptolemus): the caterpillars of this species are able to mimic snakes by turning upside-down and inflating the area around their head

It's very common for moths to engage in mimicry during the larval stage of their development, and their caterpillars are often known to mimic snakes. In most cases, they'll simply mimic the snake's eyes (or eye) and its general morphology, but there are a few species that take their disguises to a much higher level, mimicking the snake's eyes, scaly texture, coloration, posture, and even its behavior with such a startling degree of accuracy that the tiny, harmless caterpillars are often mistaken for actual snakes.
Hemeroplanes triptolemus is probably the most famous example of this.

Above: a caterpillar of the species Hemeroplanes triptolemus displaying its defensive posture
This species of sphinx moth can be found in the rainforests of Central and South America. When threatened, the caterpillar suspends itself from a twig, turns its body over to expose its underbelly, tucks in its legs, and inflates the anterior segments of its body in order to mimic the shape of a serpent's head. As the body segments expand, several markings on each side of the caterpillar's body are exposed, mimicking the eyes and nostrils of a snake.

Above: the caterpillar is shown hanging upside-down; its actual head is visible near the tip of the "snake nose"
As this article explains:
At the slightest hint of danger—be it a stooping bird or pouncing lizard—the sphinx moth caterpillar begins its masquerade. Dangling from a twig, it reveals an underside patterned in faux snakeskin and eyespots that appear to glisten. By sucking in air through tiny holes in its surface, the caterpillar inflates its head to create the illusion of a triangular skull swollen with venom glands. If the shape of a deadly snake isn’t enough to startle away a hungry predator, the caterpillar will lunge as if to strike. And despite the larva’s comical lack of any actual weaponry, the strategy appears to be effective.

Above: detailed photos of the "snake's head"
This disguise is only present in the final instar, which is the last stage of development before the caterpillar undergoes pupation and then matures into an adult moth.

Above: the adult form of Hemeroplanes triptolemus
As I've said before, moths are some of the very best mimics in the world. I've also written posts about wasp-mimicking moths, moths that mimic jumping spiders, a moth that can mimic a broken birch twig, a moth that disguises itself as two flies feeding on bird poop, another snake-mimicking moth caterpillar, a moth that mimics a curled-up leaf, a moth that mimics a cuckoo bee, moths that mimic hornets and bumblebees, and a moth that can mimic the leaves of a poplar tree.

Any Solo Leveling character is writeable for you? Is it possible to ask for a gn entomologist reader (who may or may not be autistic) who is really interested in Beru in a platonic and scientific kind of way? Like they're Jinwoo's friend, but they can't help, but be curious about Beru whenever he summons him.
I hope writing this won't be hard for you...
Afraid? No.
[Platonic] Beru x Reader.
I'm sorry that you have to wait for so long 😭😭 Hope you don't get upset.
I love you all 💗
______________________
The first time you saw Beru, you almost dropped the specimen box from your hands. The glass jars, filled with butterflies and rare beetles, rattled as you were stunned.
You had known Sung Jinwoo for almost a year now. The two of you had met by chance at a university lecture on rare insects - you had come as part of the entomology research group, and he... well, he had never really explained why he was there. He would just smile lightly whenever you asked, that faint smile like a mirror reflecting the bottom of still water, making others unconsciously want to trust him.
Without knowing when, a strange friendship had blossomed between the two of you: one was a curious entomology student, the other was law student, a man with a lonely aura like a long night.
Somehow, you soon realized that Sung Jinwoo was no ordinary person. Bits and pieces of truth are revealed through broken conversations, sudden disappearances, moments when he looks into the distance as if hearing something you can't quite place. Until the day he hesitantly reveals - he is the Shadow Monarch, the one who stands in the shadows, commanding armies that are neither living nor dead.
You've seen the silhouettes of his soldiers from afar: their towering figures, their roars that fill the air. You think you’re prepared, that nothing can scare you anymore.
Until today.
Beru.
A giant creature with silvery wings, a body that is part human, part insect, exuding an aura that freezes the air. His eyes glow coldly, his claws glint with metallic light, and a strange, respectful bow that makes the whole image both terrifying and strange.
"My King," Beru said in a shrill voice, bowing to Jinwoo like a loyal knight.
And you? You seized the specimen box and your heart raced like it would escape your body.
Sung Jinwoo shifted his gaze toward you while expressing regret through his eyes and hiding a hint of amusement. The man spoke gently to you like he would comfort a tiny bird. "He will not cause you any injury."
You opened your mouth to reply, but only a weak gasp escaped. For the first time in your life, you felt small in front of a creature that did not belong to this world - and for the first time, you understood that your friendship with Jinwoo had drawn you into a world much, much larger and stranger than the butterflies in the glass cage.
"Jinwoo, that… that's no ordinary ant," you whispered, your eyes widening so much they almost popped out of your head as a giant black insectoid glided out from Jinwoo's shadow.
Jinwoo only gave his signature small, mysterious smile. "This is Beru," he introduced in a light voice, as if he were talking about a house cat. "My strongest shadow."
Beru's jaw clicked slightly as it bowed respectfully before Jinwoo, then slowly turned its ember-red eyes to you. The moment those eyes locked onto you, the air around you felt thick.
But you didn't back down.
Years of studying insects had forged a heart of steel against anything with antennae, segmented legs, or pincers. Instead of fear, you felt a surge of excitement in your chest, blood pumping in your veins.
"Is he… is he a derivative of Camponotus?" you blurted, approaching Beru with the glint of a kid in a candy store. "Or more Atta-like in physiology? The exoskeleton is fascinating... a perfect blend of insect and human anatomy!"
You almost started muttering technical terms as you circled Beru, taking in every little detail: the texture of the chitinous surface, the proportions of the forelimbs and hindlimbs, even wanting to bend down to examine the movable joints.
Jinwoo stared at you with uncertainty and mild confusion.
"Most people run away screaming." The experience made him uncertain about whether it was something to boast about or something he should worry about because most people flee in terror according to his account.
You just waved your hand, eyes still fixed on Beru as if the world around them had vanished. "Most people aren't entomologists," you replied, dead serious. "Do you think I could study him sometimes? Just observation, I promise! No invasive intervention! The scientific community would never believe this if I didn't have the documentation."
Beru tilted his head slightly to look at you, his sharp teeth glinting in the dim light. Perhaps because of the special attention he was getting, the giant creature even leaned towards you as if to make it easier for you to observe. Jinwoo rubbed his forehead, obviously trying to figure out who he had just brought to his side.
"Arise," Jinwoo muttered with a resigned sigh.
Immediately, from the shadows stretching out beneath him, a series of smaller creatures emerged - medium-sized shadow ants, all lined up in neat formation before you. They clicked, their armor glistening like ink in the light.
Your eyes widened even more.
"A fully hierarchical colony structure?" you whispered excitedly, your hand clutching the notebook in your pocket as if you were afraid you would forget every detail. "Jinwoo, this is unbelievable!"
Jinwoo, who looked at you as if he were witnessing a creature even stranger than any monster he had ever encountered, sighed, nodding in surrender. "Just think of it as a personal field trip."
You were practically jumping for joy, and Beru, with a look of utter pride on his face, puffed out his chest and stood straight like a first-class specimen, ready for you to analyze every millimeter.
__________
Over the next few months, Jinwoo allows you to observe Beru and several of his other insect shadows in your spare time. You keep a professional distance - these are sentient beings, after all, not just specimens - but your notebooks quickly fill with observations.
'Subject Beru exhibits incredible intelligence and communication abilities. Unlike conventional ants that rely on pheromone signals, it appears to be capable of complex vocalizations and understanding human speech. The jaw structure suggests evolution for both combat and complex communication.
Behavioral Notes: Despite its fearsome appearance, the subject displays absolute loyalty to SJ. The hierarchy within the shadow army mimics that of natural ant colonies but with greater individual autonomy.'
One evening, as you sat cross-legged on the ground of the Shadow Realm (you don't know how you could come here), sketching Beru's jawbone structure, Jinwoo approached with two cups of coffee.
"You know," he said, handing you a cup, "Beru asked about you."
You almost spilled your coffee. "He what???"
"He was curious why you were always following him. I explained what an entomologist was, but..." Jinwoo shrugged. "He wanted to know more."
You glanced at the giant ant, who was currently engaging in a sparring match with big knight shadow. "Is he curious about me too?"
Jinwoo nodded. "He's smart. Smarter than most people think."
That night, for the first time, you spoke directly to Beru instead of just observing or taking notes.
"Your social structure - before you became shadows, I mean - must be fascinating," you say, trying not to sound too eager. "Is it similar to terrestrial ants, with a queen and specialized workers?"
Beru's head tilts, his mandibles clicking softly. Then, to your surprise, he begins to describe the queen ant society of Jeju Island. His voice is deep, resonant, with a strange clicking tone, but completely understandable.
You rush to your notebook, frantically taking notes as Beru explains concepts that will completely change the understanding of entomology - if you can publish it, which you know you can't.
_________
"You're not afraid of him at all, are you?" Jinwoo asked a few months later, watching her carefully measure the distance between Beru's whiskers with a special caliper.
"Should I be afraid?" you asked, taking down the measurement. "Beru has never shown any behavior that would make me feel scared."
"People usually view my shadows as monsters."
You looked up at Beru, who patiently allowed you to examine him. "I see a remarkable evolutionary adaptation. A sentient being with a complex social structure and intelligence. Why would I be afraid of something so fascinating?"
Then, as Jinwoo stepped outside to take a phone call, Beru's lower jaw clicked slightly.
"You are different," he said, his eyes fixed on you.
"Why?" you asked, closing your notebook.
"Not afraid. See me. Not just a shadow. Not just a monster."
You smile. "Oh, a career interest. I have devoted my entire life to studying insects. You stand as the most amazing individual I have encountered thus far."
Beru's lower jaw clicks in a way you recognize as his laugh. "Human study me. I study human."
"You studied me?" you ask, surprised.
"Different colonies. Different ways. Interesting to me."
You smile. "I suppose we're both researchers in our own ways."

Hello!!! i love your blog a lot and i was wondering something about the child reader au, how would the segments react if child! reader had some form of neurodivergency? Maybe they are below the level they need to be for their age on some topics but above and beyond in others that they fixate on?

Dottore prided himself on logic, intellect, and efficiency. Emotions, sentiments, and attachments were little more than distractions in his work. Yet here he was, a father to a peculiar child with a mind that worked in ways even he had trouble fully comprehending.
You weren’t an average child, that much had been clear from the beginning. In some aspects, you were brilliant beyond your years—your understanding of mechanics, biology, or even abstract theories often stunned the segments. But in other areas, you struggled.
Social cues? Difficult. Routine changes? Unsettling. Basic arithmetic? A nightmare. But if someone mentioned a topic you fixated on? You could talk about it for hours, analyzing it with detail and enthusiasm that made even the segments pause in admiration.
Omega was, by design, the closest in mannerisms to the original Dottore. Logical, composed, and a firm believer in efficiency. At first, he viewed your neurodivergency with mild skepticism—was it a flaw, an imperfection?
But he learned.
The day you explained, in perfect detail, the entire structure of a mechanical device that even he had struggled to perfect, Omega realized that you weren’t broken. You were simply wired differently. And different was not inherently inefficient.
“I fail to understand how you struggle with basic addition yet can conceptualize entire blueprints in your head,” he muttered one evening as you effortlessly explained an invention to him.
You shrugged, fiddling with one of the gears. “Numbers are hard… but machines make sense.”
Omega was not one for sentimentality, but something about that statement struck a chord within him. From then on, he no longer dismissed your difficulties but worked around them. If you struggled with verbal explanations, he provided diagrams. If basic equations frustrated you, he incorporated visual methods to make them more engaging.
Efficiency was key, and Omega ensured you had the tools to work with your mind, not against it.
Iota had always been the most protective of the segments, and this instinct only intensified when it came to you. He was perceptive, noticing the small details others overlooked—the way your fingers twitched when overstimulated, the way you recoiled from certain textures or noises, how a break in routine could leave you spiraling.
And so, Iota adapted.
He subtly adjusted the environment to keep it comfortable for you. He ensured your workspace remained structured and predictable, preventing unnecessary disruptions. If a loud noise startled you, he was quick to soothe you, offering headphones or leading you away.
The day a Fatui recruit made a snide remark about your struggles, Iota didn’t hesitate. He had the soldier reassigned within the hour, his normally calm demeanor replaced with cold fury.
“They don’t get to mock you,” he told you firmly. “You’re brilliant in ways they’ll never understand.”
You never forgot that.
Theta was your escape from rigidity. He was the one who encouraged your creativity, indulging in your fixations and making learning fun. While others tried to teach you through structured lessons, Theta turned it into a game.
Can’t focus on writing? Let’s turn it into a story where you’re the main character. Need help with problem-solving? Let’s frame it as an experiment.
He never made you feel bad for your struggles, never got frustrated when you drifted off-topic. Instead, he matched your energy, meeting you where you were.
When you got overwhelmed, he was the first to pull you aside for a breather. “C’mon, kid, let’s get some fresh air. No point frying your brain over this.”
And when you hyper-fixated on something? He was right there with you, grinning as he listened to you ramble.
“You know,” he chuckled once, “you might just be the most interesting person in this whole damn place.”
Alpha wasn’t always the easiest to deal with. He valued discipline and order, and your unpredictable nature sometimes clashed with his methods. At first, he struggled with your need for specific routines and your difficulty in adapting to sudden changes.
But Alpha was observant. He noticed how your frustration wasn’t from defiance, but from genuine distress. The day you had a meltdown over a last-minute schedule change, he didn’t scold you. Instead, he sat with you, grounding you with a firm yet steady presence.
“We’ll find a way to work with this,” he said after you’d calmed down. “Not against it.”
True to his word, Alpha found ways to make transitions easier for you. He implemented structured warnings before any changes, created visual schedules, and ensured you always had a sense of control over your environment.
Over time, you grew to trust him, knowing that while he was strict, he was also reliable.
Dottore had seen many things in his life, yet raising a neurodivergent child was an entirely new experience. He was not a man of patience, yet he found himself developing it for you. When he first realized that your brain operated on a different wavelength, he studied you—closely, carefully, not as a scientist, but as a father.
He did not try to “fix” you. Instead, he tried to understand.
When you hyper-focused, he let you ramble, never once interrupting. When you struggled, he analyzed what methods worked best for you. When the world became too overwhelming, he was your anchor.
One night, after you’d fallen asleep at your desk, surrounded by half-finished projects, he carefully draped a blanket over you, watching the slow rise and fall of your breath.
“You’re remarkable,” he murmured, more to himself than to you.
Dottore had never expected to be a father. He had never expected to care so deeply for someone so small, so different, yet so utterly brilliant in their own way. But as he stood there, watching over you, he realized something undeniable:
You were his greatest experiment. His greatest challenge. And his greatest joy.
