I'm so sorry this made me giggle far too much. (See also: Walker thinks caramelized onions and caramel apples are the same thing)
(It's not that I think Walker is dumb, he just leans a little too hard into speaking before thinking.)

Tumblr media
“You need to hurry up. The agents are—” Bucky's eyes drop to your belly, and the scars that tell him so much about your story. He covers his eyes, after roaming every inch of your exposed skin. “Sorry, I didn’t know that you are changing.”
“What the fuck, bird brain,” you growl and grab your shirt. You just stepped out of the bathroom, still in your birth suit. “I didn’t take you for a pervert! The other agents, yes. But you seemed to be at least not a creep wanting to get me under them right after they got my husband killed.”
“I didn’t see a thing,” he lies. Bucky is not a creep taking the chance to stare at your naked body. He simply looked at the scars on your belly, leg, and left shoulder. “But…uh…the scars.”
“A nice reminder to never trust one of you ever again,” you sniff. “Ransom tried to protect me with his body but…” You look away and try to swallow the lump in your throat. “They had so many bullets, but he had only one life. The one he gave for me.”
“I’m…sorry,” Bucky offers. “I know you do not trust the agents, or me. All I can do is promise to protect you. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“All the others said the very same thing. Right after Ransom begged the cops to help them. The moment he agreed to tell the agents everything about the men extorting him. Even after they got my husband killed.” You chuckle humorously. “I’m better off on my own than with them around.”
“Sam and I are not agents or cops. We are here to protect you, nothing else. We don’t need your statement or knowledge. All we want is to keep you alive and help you start a new life.”
“You don’t get it!” You throw your hands up. “I don’t want a new life. I want the life back they stole from me. I want my husband. I want my bab—” You shake your head. “Whatever.” You shrug and blink the tears away. “No one cares about what I want.”
“I’ll be waiting for you downstairs,” Bucky softly says. His hands twitch and he wishes he could console you. “Take your time.”
“Get fucked,” you sniff and turn your back on Bucky, aware he saw your scars. “Never stare at me again.”
“What?”
“I know I’m not as pretty as the girls you bang. That’s not my fault,” you look down at your marred body. “It’s theirs…only theirs…”
Tumblr media
“Finally,” one of the agents barks in your direction. “Move. We don’t have all day, princess.” He says as you walk inside the interrogation room, Bucky, and Sam by your side. “Your bodyguards can leave.”
You glance at Bucky, furrowing your brows.
“No,” he glares at the man yelling at you. “Our mission is to protect Y/N at all costs. This includes protecting her from agents who got her husband killed.”
“That woman is lucky we don’t throw her into jail and lose the key,” the agent yells at Bucky.
“Stop that.” Sam snaps at the man. “She’s here on free terms. You have no evidence against her. Y/N is an innocent victim and a witness. If you do not treat her with respect, we are out of this.”
“You’ve got no right!” The man barks. He feels strong with a whole team crowding the room. He stares at you, a smirk on his lips. “She will tell us everything she remembers of the night our witness got killed.”
“Ransom,” you murmur.
“What?” The agent snaps. “I don’t care about your antics, or if you are on your period. We want your statement. Stop making a fuss.”
“His name was Hugh Ransom Drysdale,” you lift your head and look the man straight in the eyes. “He was an honest businessman, a loyal and loving husband, and he would’ve been a wonderful-,” you choke on your words, and need a moment to take a deep breath, “father. You will never call him your witness again.”
“I don’t fucking care!” He replies, making Sam scoff. “You will give us what we want and be a good girl.”
“I got that you don’t give a shit that you got my husband killed,” you growl. “But you won’t get me killed.” You smirk darkly. “I know nothing about my deceased husband’s business, and I don’t remember anything from the night he and my unborn child got killed because of you and the likes of you.”
The agent blanches. He starts to sweat when Bucky steps in front of you.
“We are done here,” Sam finally says. He looks at the agents blocking your way out of the room. “I suggest you get out of our way, or I’ll let my secret weapon take you down.”
“Secret weapon?” The agents murmur in unison. “What secret weapon?”
“Me—” Bucky shrugs his jacket off and hands it to you. He rolls his shoulders, ready to take all the agents down if he must.
“Yeah, you better let us walk out of that fucking room or the Winter Soldier will rip you a new one,” you snicker. “At least his muscle are good for something.”
“I’m not the—” Bucky shakes his head. This is not the time to tell the agents that he’s not the deadly super-soldier from back then. Something is fishy about the way they treat you and he's got no time to find out if his gut instinct is right.
“Agents, we are leaving now,” Sam tries one last time. “This is not the place nor the time to settle this.”
“Why not?” Bucky cracks his neck. “I could use the training, Sam.”
You press Bucky’s jacket to your chest. He looks ready to kill all the agents only to protect you, and you wonder if this is all for show to get you to cooperate with him or if he honestly cares for your well-being.
“This isn’t over,” the agent snaps at you. “One way or another we will get your statement. I’ll find a way to prove that you were involved in your husband’s shady deals.”
“Get fucked!” Bucky grunts and shoves the man out of his way. “Stop acting like she’s the villain here. You got her husband killed and never even apologized.”
“Bucky, let’s go,” Sam guides you toward the door, keeping an eye on the agents. “We are done here…”
Tumblr media
“Where are we?” You look around the new hideout they brought you to. “Why did we leave the other place? I slowly got used to cold showers and scratchy sheets.”
“We don’t know who to trust,” Sam answers honestly. “Bucky and I decided to change location. It’s safer this way.”
“Okay,” you nod. “Which room is mine?”
“Upstairs, the one in the middle. It’s right next to mine,” Bucky grabs your bags and walks upstairs.
“Uh-what happened to bird brain?” You furrow your brows. “Sam? Did you say something to him?”
“No,” Sam shakes his head. “How about you get settled in? I’ll store the groceries.” He places his hand on your shoulder. “Don’t worry, Y/N. We have everything we will need here.”
“What will we do now?” You sniffle. “I can’t hide here forever.”
“Our friends are working on a plan,” he says. “For now, all you have to do is to hang on. Bucky will protect you. This place is a fortress, and I will come around as often as I can.”
You nod. There is nothing else you can do. “I’m going to sleep a bit. It was a long day.”
“I’ll be here for the next few days,” Sam says. “We’ve got this handled.”
Tumblr media
“Do you need anything?” Bucky pokes his head into your room. “You should keep the blinds closed and the gun close by.” He steps inside the room. “I’m right through that door.” He points to the door connecting your rooms. “If you need me.”
“What will happen now?”
“Sam got this. He and the others have a plan to bring the people who are after you down,” he steps further inside the room to sit on the bed next to you. Bucky glances at the piece of paper in your hand. He swallows thickly realizing it’s an ultrasound picture. “I’m more the  kind of guy using my muscles.”
“He was a good man.”
“I know," Bucky softly says.
“I still don’t like you,” you murmur.
“Feeling’s mutual, doll.”

Pairing: Wanda Maximoff x Fem!Reader
Summary: Y/n knows that Natasha is dead. And once her friendship with Wanda really kicks off, from smiling at each other during therapy to going to each other’s houses for tea, she thinks she’s finally ready to move on. But the question is: how far will she be able to go?
Warnings (Entire Series): This series deals with mature topics, including, but not limited to: death, mental health issues, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, grief, trauma, general unwellness, illness (both mental and physical), and a most likely inaccurate portrayal of group therapy (though it’s much better than whatever was going on in TFATWS.) Please mind the warnings below.
Warnings: cursing, dead romantic partners, death, Halloween. Let me know to tag anything else.
🌻Series Masterlist 🌻
————————————————————————
𝐈 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 You and Wanda had started to take turns going to each other’s places for tea or coffee or even dinner every so often. The first time you’d brought her to your apartment, after two days of cry-cleaning, she’d smiled warmly as she sat with you at your kitchen table.
You’d learned her husband’s name was Jarvis, but everyone called him Vision, because his eyesight was really good and his eyes were different shades of blue.
You’d told her about Natasha, about some of your funny memories together. You told her of deep red hair, icy blue eyes that held nothing but warmth and love and a sharp sense of humor. You told her of sarcastic jokes, of loving roasts and bad puns every so often. Of nerdy movies and DIY furniture.
And you knew you were developing a little bit of a crush on her, but you knew it wasn’t going to go anywhere. She was straight, wasn’t she? She had a whole ass husband, and she’d never mentioned anything about liking women.
Either way, you didn’t say no when she invited you on a mysterious outing one day.
You drove over to her house, which was in a pretty big suburban neighborhood. You were  positive that you were the last one to arrive, noticing all the cars parked in the drive way and against the street.
You rang the doorbell, and it was Clint who opened the door for you.
“Hey, c’mon—Wanda’s elbow-deep in old Halloween decorations in the living room.” He explains, leading you through the house. It was a nice house, warm and comforting.
Clint led you into the living room, where Wanda, Sam, and Bucky were all sorting through decorations. On a first glance, you could see who was responsible for what—Bucky was surrounded by Halloween decor, and Sam had all the basic fall decorations, including pillow covers and painted canvases, and Wanda was separating the two things.
“Hey, you’re here!” Wanda grinned as Clint walked off to help Steve hang a banner on the wall of the dining room.
You smile, nodding. “How can I help?”
“C’mere, I need help carrying these bins back down to the basement.” Wanda directed you, having you help her stack the plastic tubs, and then the lids.
“I can carry the bins,” you offer, and before she can reply, you lift them off the ground.
“Thanks.” She picks up the lids, before guiding you through her pretty house and to a door. She opens it, revealing a set of stairs.
“The basement’s a bit rough-looking, and there’s a light with a string you have to pull down there. It’s a bit dark, sorry.” She apologized, beginning to walk down the stairs. They creaked as she stepped on them, and you bit your lip. It was a stereotypical scary basement.
“S’okay.” You replied, though for some reason, you were a bit scared. It felt scary, though you knew that rationally, it was just a basement.
You followed her down the creaking steps, taking slow, cautious steps. As you rounded the corner of the wall that kept the stairs out of view from the rest of the basement, you bit your lip.
“Here, I’ll find the light somewhere..” She mumbled quietly, tucking the bin lids under her left arm as she reached her right hand up at the ceiling, seemingly searching for the light string.
It was completely dark in the basement. It smelled like a basement, which somehow managed to mean it smelled like a dark and creepy enclosed space with no windows that was very much underground. You took slow, small steps, unable to see your feet from the way you were carrying the bins. You didn’t separate your knees when you walked, wanting to keep your chance of falling as close to zero as it could be.
As she searched for the pull chain of the light, you tried to glance around in the darkness. The only light was the mostly concealed light spilling out from the door at the top of the staircase, making the basement ten times creepier.
“Where is it..” She muttered, taking a few steps around in a circle, hand still in the air.
A figure stepped into your vision, and the first thing you noticed was its face. A true monster, with green skin and black details on its face, with horns protruding from its forehead. You couldn’t see anything but its face, but that was enough. It jumped out at you and Wanda, as it croaked out some broken strand of speech.
It let out a horrific shriek, and you screamed, dropping the bins as Wanda let the lids fall out of her hands, and they skittered across the hard and rough floor of the basement. She screeched too, racing behind you as you raced to her, hoping that you’d get taken out first and she could get away.
You both stood there, joints locked tight and frozen in pure terror, screaming. This will be the day that you die. You’re going to die right here, in some basement, being murdered by some monster that you didn’t even know existed.
Your thoughts screamed these words, as you screamed incoherently. At least, until you heard the sound of laughing.
A flesh hand pulled at the chin of the monsters face, pulling it back. It was a mask. It had just been a mask.
Tony cackled as he took the mask off his face entirely, and it took you a second to process everything.
You heard stomping from upstairs, and before you knew it, Steve was racing down the staircase, Bucky in tow, a panicked look on his face.
“What is it?” Steve wheezed as Bucky said something similar.
“Tony, you ass!” You hissed, heat rushing to your face as you realized you’d been screaming over a stereotypical Halloween mask.
“Seriously?” Bucky’s brow was raised as he pat Steve’s back, the blonde leaning on his knees, attempting to catch his breath.
You were about to yell at Tony when you heard something from behind you. Giggles.
Wanda Maximoff was giggling, snorting every so often. She found this funny. You found yourself laughing too, albeit unintentionally.
You realized she was still clinging to your arms, her hands wrapped tightly on your biceps. She seemed to realize this too, quickly letting go.
“Sorry,” she blushed.
“It’s alright.” You smiled shyly, completely missing the knowing look Steve and Bucky were giving each other.
Eventually, you all dragged yourselves back upstairs, continuing to change out the summer-slash-regular decor for the fall-slash-Halloween-and-kinda-Thanksgiving decor.
When everything was up and finished, everyone left. Everyone except you, who was still talking to Wanda. You eventually made it to the doorframe before she stopped you again.
“Hey—er, do you..do you want to go out with me tomorrow? Like a girls day?” She stared up at you, biting her lip anxiously.
“Sure. Where do you wanna go?” You asked after a moment, hoping that your face wasn’t as red as you thought it would be.
“It’s a surprise. Just..meet me here at..12:00 tomorrow, alright?”
You nodded, quite eagerly, and you cringed at yourself as you walked to your car. Biting your lip as you drove home, you wondered what you were meant to wear. Wanda hadn’t really said anything about dress codes, so you assumed you could just wear something not stained, and that would be fine.
Even though it technically wasn’t a date, you couldn’t help but feel excited for tomorrow. But if it had been a date, would you have been able to say yes? You weren’t entirely sure. Yes, you wanted to say. But what about Natasha?
You didn’t have an answer to that.

As a Bucky stan, I accept Sambucky as long as there's expansion on Bucky's feelings for Steve. There will be no Steve erasure in this household /j
If this angers you keep reading:
Edit: ok guys apparently this was wasn't understood well so here's the essay that I was avoiding with this short but apparently unclear post:
First, I'm sorry that I didn't indicate the tone well enough. As I'm sure you know this is a website of many neurodivergents. I am one of them, and I also don't English very well, and so I probably could have formatted this better, and made extra sure it didn't come off as negative, that's totally on me. What I would like to say here is (caps for emphasis not emotion): I LIKE BOTH THESE SHIPS. SEPARATELY AND TOGETHER. I AM NOT ANTI SAMBUCKY.
What I was hoping to indicate with the original post was that I think Steve's impact on Bucky (and Sam for that matter) is really important to his character and I prefer moving into new ships when my favorite character actually works through they're issues and not just whatever moral penance he apparently did I'm tfatws that made him all better (that is a whole nother argument so please don't freak out about my supposed hatred of the show. I don't hate it. Chill.). ADDITIONALLY I do not think that Sambucky existing is Steve erasure!!! That second line was actually meant to be humorous, but I can see where that didn't come out. I will add a smiley face so you guys don't think I'm an axe murderer. In reference to that one user *cough* I don't really expect an award for saying I enjoy a ship lol. I was just saying. I enjoy. The ship.
Also it's not super cool to send mildly passive aggressive messages to me in multiple places about wanting me to untag my post (the important time to tell someone how to tag their posts is for tws). Unfortunately you're not the only person in the fandom and I will actually tag however I want.
That said, if you hate me and my terrible post, blocking is just a click away and while it's possible you don't have fingers you clearly have some kind of mechanism for operating this website. :D
Block me. I'm saying if you don't want to see me block me.
😁

If anybody is wondering why we never got to see Sam lose it, get angry or emotional, just watch Anthony Mackie keep his calm while being asked racist questions, like "how does is feel to take the shield as Black Captain America,?" or being asking if "Steve Rogers will be coming back?" for the 100th time.
Anthony managed to answer gracefully even though those journalists didn't deserve it, because it was his only option. He can't just tell those interviewers to f*ck off or walk away. He has to answer calmly or deflect with humor, no matter how f*cked up the questions are.
And the real problem is... If a White actor tells rude journalists to f*ck off... He will be praised and called brave. But if a Black actor does the same he will be labelled as rude and ungrateful ( or agressive in some cases).
So please stop saying that Sam not losing it or not being emotional in TFATWS was unrealistic. It's unfortunate but very realistic.
The only time we see that side of him, it's when he's with Bucky in the therapy session, and even then he manages to somehow maintain his cool.

while it is obviously the correct character choice for sam to remain un-superserumed in mcu canon, it would be objectively hilarious in fanfic for him to get sexually transmitted super soldier serum from steve and/or bucky (don’t question how that works it’s for the humor)
Someone actually wrote a sambucky fic like this! I FORGOT THE TITLE SOMEONE HELP
Sam pretending to sleep with super soldiers for the cheesiest reasons like THIS IS FOR THE GREATER GOOD!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FIGHT KANG AND HIS GODDAMN DYNASTY? BUCKY IS THE LAST SUPER SOLDIER ON EARTH! (as if the serum is impossible to recreated, tfatws proof it's not that hard to make LMAO)
bucky and steve just play along and they continue to have sex until all of them caught feelings... OMG IM OBSSESED WITH THIS CONCEPT

I don’t know how I’m meant to choose from such an enticing list of WIPs, “but we kick each other into gear (and off buildings)” is calling my name! Please tell me more!
Hi hi, thank you for dropping in! <3
Okay, so this is the first fic I ever started writing way back during quarantine as a sort of Endgame fix-it, and it's pretty much been dormant for years now because real life got in the way before I could develop all that much connecting plot. Funnily enough, I did also start with Sam refusing the shield (albeit under slightly different circumstances and with Steve not having committed complete character suicide), but for the most part it's just disconnected episodes of Sam and Bucky work-roadtripping around Europe and Asia, slowly figuring each other out and processing their own respective issues and grief + a healthy helping of random local color, OCs, and humor thrown in on the side.
Looking back on it there's so much I'd want to rework there but it's still dear to my heart, so I might eventually go back to it - especially because TFATWS left a lot to be desired, imho, and I'm still mad about it.
One of the more crack-adjacent partial episodes under the cut if you're interested:
More and more, he unexpectedly finds himself having to explain to people that hanging around the guy is not a very dangerous affair these days, strictly speaking, unless you count the occasional collateral damage to Sam’s nerves. It's all a bit unsettling, trying to justify a former international terrorist in the eyes of others like he’s a particularly snappy pitbull with a history of dogfighting: Yeah, he did almost throw that fan to the ground the other day, but they snuck up on us. No, he doesn’t like crowds, but a family get together is okay and he’s surprisingly good with kids. No, no, he doesn’t do that anymore, we’re trying to get him accustomed to more well-adjusted activities, like going for runs and sleeping more than 45 minutes a time. Yes, he’s actually a sweetheart, looking for his forever home. Sam briefly entertains the idea of putting that last one on Bucky’s Tinder profile while he’s sleeping. To be fair, he wouldn’t necessarily call whatever relationship they’ve managed to develop smooth sailing, either, or particularly sanity affirming. But neither is being constantly on the move chasing an unsubstantial lead and yet here they both are, essentially backpacking their asses all around Europe like the world’s most traumatized spring breakers. Here they fucking are. "Where are we, again?" Sam says, squinting down at his phone where the maps app is once again blanking out to a dull grey grid as if to personally spite him. "Poland," Bucky deadpans from the driver's seat but his expression's distracted, fingers tapping out an offbeat pattern on the wheel that clashes with the folky tune crackling in over the faint radio signal. "Hilarious. I meant which town are we about to pass through, I wanna try to look up a place to buy a charger for this thing," he says, sighing when his phone takes that as a blessing and finally gives out with a sad chirp. He casts a look out the window, the rows and rows of tall pine trees blurring together into near-impenetrable greens and maroons as the sun goes down. He hopes they find a place to crash soon — he's about ready to pass out himself, and his back is way past the days it could withstand sleeping in the car. Next to him, Bucky's very quiet save for the soft tap-tap-tap of his hands against the leather. "Barnes." "Hm?" "You have no clue where we are, do you." "No, of course I do. It's, uh." He shrugs, forcibly casual. Sam's going to strangle him. "It's a Polish, y'know. Municipality." "Can you just—" "Old. Probably been invaded a couple of times." "Bucky."
"Lotsa consonants in the name." "You said you knew this area," Sam accuses. "That you've been here recently." "I do," he insists, glaring through the windshield at the idyllic scenery like it spat at him and called his mother something untoward. "I did, at least, but then they had to go and change all the fucking signs, and the roads don't look the same, and the trees are all—" he waves a hand vaguely instead of finishing, like that's supposed to be sufficient explanation or at all helpful to Sam's growling stomach and their equally dead, equally useless phones. "Oh, it's the trees' fault? The trees are different from when you—" He cuts off, a niggling gear turning loud and loose somewhere in the back of his brain all of a sudden. The compounded sleep deprivation's really not helping in giving it a name and a meaning, scattering his thoughts in ten different directions. Something he read once, about trumpets, or— no, the archangel. Why that? They passed a church about an hour ago, but he hasn't been in so long his poppy's probably turning over in his grave, and anyway what does that have to do with— He blinks once, twice. Bucky resettles in the driver's seat, shifty-eyed as anything. The gear rattles, and turns, and turns, and then clicks. Not church. Not trumpets. Junior year of high school, AP History. His presentation on Gabriel Jones, PFC, and his role in running comms with local resistance members during an action, which got him a grudging pat on the back from the brass and shrapnel permanently lodged in the upper thigh. He managed to get himself and two members of his team, including his CO who got shot in the neck, out of the line of fire long enough to get medical treatment. He saved Captain America's life. It was an act of bravery, Sam'd told the class as his teacher nodded along gravely. It was a miracle any of them survived. They were down on supplies, and in the middle of the woods. In fucking Poland. "Oh, you didn't. Tell me you didn't." "What?" Bucky says, a little too defensive, in Sam's opinion, for someone who managed to get them lost in the Polish countryside by virtue of sheer hubris alone. "Tell me you didn't think you could navigate us through Poland," Sam says, slowly so it really sinks in, "with a bunch of jumbled memories of some damn woods from ninteen-forty-fucking-four."
And then in the next scene they talk about parental death, so. *massive shrugging emoji* Consistent tone, who?

Uh... pretty sure Yelena/Bucky is not a thing because I think that the clues suggest Bucky is... her *dad*...? Sam, meet your new stepdaughter...
Literally everyone is thinking Yelena and Bucky are going to have a romance and I'm sitting here like "oh yeah, looks like they're gearing up for the twist where Bucky's her dad!" lol
We know that Bucky was held by the Russians until five minutes ago and that the whole plot of Black Widow was that Yelena's family was her *family* but they also were not her biological family, so there's more story potentially to be mined there? Her sister was Natasha and they were sent to play The Americans by the same group of people who had Bucky, so there are easy connections there. So we don't know who Yelena's biological dad is but she is plucky and kinda dark-humored and *looks kinda exactly like The Winter Soldier*. Not sure that's a coincidence...
Recall even that TFATWS went so unusually directly bleak for Marvel in referencing that The Winter Soldier is a sexual assault survivor, yeah? What purpose did that serve in Bucky's character backstory at this particular point of the story? It's set up to explain how he unknowingly fathered a child as The Winter Soldier, which he learns about in his post-TFATWS story.
Sam is going to love his new stepdaughter, even if the game plan was to adopt cats after this separate mission. (Bucky: "Uh, technically, we are?" Sam: "Literally no one has called a woman a 'cat' since 1955, Buck...") The sheer, happy fun that will be Yelena and Sarah, you guys!
I could be way off but I think the vibe kind of suggests family more than romance at this point...

What are your thoughts on the new remake of daredevil that will air on disney+? Personally I'm a bit nervous about whether they will somehow try to make it a bit more kid-friendly or something along the lines of that. There are of course also the worry that they will completely ignore the Netflix series.
But nonetheless I'm very excited to see how they choose to tackle Daredevil!
In short: mixed, but choosing to just be really excited!
This will be the most negative I get on this blog until we actually have content to analyze, although my thoughts are still mostly positive:
Concerns:
Based on the news about Fisk being back, I'm thinking they might go the same route as "The Force Awakens" and stick pretty closely to the original story. Possibly to the point of being uncreative.
Not enough whump. Not enough lingering on the whump. Not enough slowing down the plot to make Matt actually deal with the whump.
The fight scenes. Gosh, the fight scenes in TFATWS and Hawkeye were so meh compared to Daredevil. Please, please, please bring back Chris Brewster and the others!
I'm also worried Disney will either erase or drastically misunderstand Matt's Catholicism. To be fair, so does most of the fandom, in my opinion. ;) I take issue with Matt being known for having "religious trauma." Matt has a lot of trauma, and his religion certainly colors how he understands and processes and communicates about his trauma...but religion didn't cause his trauma, except to the extent that it created his "devil inside" misconception. But Matt's trauma comes from abandonment, abuse, and neglect, plus just the struggle of dealing with his enhanced senses, and the second-hand trauma he gets as a result of his senses (not to mention his job(s)). Matt's trauma isn't from being Catholic. (Nor, I think, is his guilt. His guilt is also colored by his faith, but come on: Matt would feel personally responsible for all the world’s problems even if he were irreligious - that’s a personality thing, not a religion thing.)
I'm worried Disney will try to tackle complicated issues like the criminal justice system, and basically give us nothing more than the "Do better!" speech from TFATWS.
I'm worried that in general, Disney will make Matt, Fisk, and other characters too one- or two-dimensional.
CGI. In general.
But that being said, here are things I'm excited for:
More content! Even if I don't like most of it, I'll probably like at least some of it.
More money and recognition for Charlie! HE DESERVES IT SO MUCH.
Eighteen episodes! EIGHTEEN! This makes me hopeful that they'll actually take the time to explore themes and characters well.
Also, I'm not excited about this per se, but I'm okay with a slight tonal change. If Matt is quippier, that's okay with me, as long as his humor is still dry. We saw glimpses of his sense of humor in the show, and I love it. If he starts out the new series in a healthier place emotionally and spiritually, I think it would be perfectly acceptable for him to make more jokes.
Also, although it would be funny for him to crash more light-hearted shows (like She-Hulk) and just kinda still be his normal broody self, I can also forgive him being written a little different to accommodate the tone of another show. In a weird way, I see that as respectful. For example, She-Hulk is Jennifer's show. I'd rather they write Matt to match her show's tone (as long as it's not completely ooc) than write him in a way that sticks out or makes her show feel incongruous. It's about her, not him.

Phase 4 Is Almost Over And Contrary To My Initial Line Of Thought I Did End Up Watching All Of Them Somehow So Now You Get To Hear About It
I'll be talking about both the movies AND the series in order of release under the cut, the TL;DR for me is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't know why everyone cares so much about if it was Good or Bad.
That might seem dumb to say on a Rating Post but I'll get to it.
WandaVision (1/15/2021)-- 9/10
I think the MCU has definitely had it's bobbles handling Wanda (even in this show) but this one actually really hit home for me. The fall/winter leading up to this show, I was actually in a pretty deeply depressive episode-- hardly able to leave my bed outside of class or speak to anyone around me in person, so even though I wasn't exactly feeling grief like Wanda was, I found her emotional arc of wanting to be In Control And Happy to at least be relatable. I do think the Agatha twist could have been handled better as far as writing goes, but I think that's mostly a flaw of the MCU formula (which you'll hear a lot in this post). I also don't think the Evan Peters of it all was anything to get that mad about, and people who were and are STILL mad about it can Submit Their Complaints To My Ask Box.
Also the final Scarlet Witch costume slapped I loved it.
Tumblr media
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (3/19/2021)-- 7.75/10
I can't really speak to the way everything in this show was handled, given that I am white as snow, but overall, there was a lot I really liked about this one. The writing and performance for Isaiah Bradley as acted by Carl Lumbly was so intense and probably my favorite part of the show overall. My main gripe is really the handling of the Flag Smashers and the need to have Walker saving people in the final fight. I think Walker was well past the point of getting the audience on his side For One Last Go by then, and the Flag Smashers were just...so, so horribly whacked out of line with their prior depiction by the end. It just wasn't congruent.
Tumblr media
Speaking of incongruent....
Loki Season 1 (6/9/2021)-- 6.5/10
I really wanted to enjoy Loki. Like I really did. But sitting on it for a year and a half and rewatching it, I think it was just TOO inconsistent episode to episode. There are individual MOMENTS and individual EPISODES even that I think are very good on the whole, but I think it's too obvious when different writers are taking on different characters (Mobius especially). It was a pleasant surprise to see Jonathan Majors, though, and I don't think I hated the finale as much as some other people did. I just think WandaVision did a good job deconstructing Wanda, and TFATWS did a good job deconstructing Sam's relationship to the Shield, but Loki just didn't really have a grasp on Loki as a character for me.
Tumblr media
Black Widow (7/9/2021)-- 7/10
This movie should have been in Phase 3. Also stan Florence Pugh. That's about it.
Also if you hate what they did with Taskmaster, that's fine but it's not that deep.
Tumblr media
What If...? (8/11/2021)-- 4.5/5
What If had some really good episodes, like Star-Lord T'Challa & Stark Saved By Kilmonger. But it also had The Zombies Episode and Captain Carter and Whatever The Fuck That Finale Was. It's more inconsistency and connecting it for the sake of connecting it and not really stopping to PLAY in the worlds they created, which was a shame, and then when they did it was,,,,,,,,,,REAL hit or miss. Mostly miss.
Tumblr media
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (9/3/2021)-- 8/10
Delicious finally some good fucking food. First, kissing Simu Liu on the mouth because he's SUCH a great leading man. Second, it felt JUST disconnected enough from the MCU while still having the canon references to feel fresh. It was still very much In-Tone with the MCU as far as humor went, but the actors really carried this to something special-- Simu, Michelle Yeoh, TONY LEUNG????? icon. Even places where the narrative was weaker were WELL compensated by the actors, enough to make me eager to see the next installment.
Tumblr media
Eternals (11/5/2021)-- 7/10
Do I think the cast was too large, in the end? Yes. But Eternals was still so...austere in a way the MCU normally is not. It was a very different kind of movie, formulaically. Sure, Big Gray Monster, but it was very much not front and center. Centering it on Sersi and taking advantage of Gemma Chan's Pure Power was great, and I loved how the dynamics between the characters drove the story.
Also, stan Phastos.
Tumblr media
Hawkeye (11/24/2021)-- 6/10
I would have probably enjoyed it more if Clint's character buildup wasn't so little and far apart in other MCU movies. It felt like I was SUPPOSED to be relating to this old friend's struggle with grief, but it just Did Not Hit.
I was mostly here for Vera Farmiga. Real Girlies Know.
Tumblr media
o i'm about to catch heat for this next one
Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021)-- 5/10
.......................No Way Home wasn't actually that good. I mean, it DOES go back and fix all my gripes with MCU Peter Parker and Zendaya sells as always and it was fun to see the old cast back. But uh. Into The Spiderverse did the multiverse thing to better effect, I think. The Audible Pause To Clap for Andrew Garfield's appearance,,,,we'll get to her later. Ultimately, I think Tom Holland is the weakest of the three Spider-Men of recent memory and it shows ESPECIALLY next to Andrew Garfield and without the background of having seen the other Spider-Man franchise incarnations, it's all that much weaker because you don't have the emotional context the film hinges on. It's fanservice for fanservice's sake. And we'll circle back to that. Also how dare you drag Matthew Catholic Sadboy Murdock into this.
Tumblr media
Moon Knight (3/30/2022)-- 6.5/10
I hope Oscar Isaac and May Calamawy have gotten excellent treatment for carrying this show on their backs. I don't think Harrow (had to Google the character's name ffs) was strong enough to get by on Malevolent Pacifism alone, and it did just kind of Unravel at the end with the Unnecessary Big Fight & the show kind of just Stopping rather than Ending. Also, did not think it was necessary to TEASE Jake Lockley if he was just going to be in the post-credit scene. I would have rather they not bring him up at all rather than having hints so MASSIVE.
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/6/2022)-- 3/10
When I left the theater for this movie, I didn't actually think I could hate it more than I did when it was over. Then I watched the Assembled on it. And I realized no, the depths of my hatred DO go deeper. I don't know what's worse-- the struggle of having to choose between the Wanda of WandaVision and the Wanda of the Non-D+ Series MCU and somehow choosing neither, leaving GAPING-WIDE plot holes for the sake of "having the coolest villain in the MCU instead of leaving it for the team of another Avengers movie" (Michael Waldron my detested), whatever the fuck the Illuminati was supposed to be, or bringing back Sam Raimi, who I think genuinely tried to direct something visually his own and artful, only to have him bogged down by Marvel's own capitalistic editing and filming practices. The pauses to clap for the Illuminati. How presumptuous and prideful do you have to be to include space for the audience to clap for your cameos? And I haven't even TALKED about Stephen yet, because there's almost nothing to say except it is a SECOND movie where he is implied to have to face consequences for his choices, only for none to appear because the Wider Canon demands he be fine. It is EVERYTHING the MCU is at its worst.
Not you Bruce Campbell, though, you're doing great.
Tumblr media
Ms. Marvel (6/8/2022)-- 8/10
I think the reason Ms. Marvel ranks this well for me is not just the AMAZING attention to detail and authenticity of the creative team and Iman Vellani, but because Kamala Khan in the comics debuted when I myself was an insecure teenager writing fanfiction about my favorite superheroes and trying to survive school. I have a nostalgia for her character specifically that might bias me a little toward her show, but there was something so deeply authentic and warm about Iman's performance that I couldn't help being giddy to see her in every scene, despite the power changes and all the little things that would normally give me gripes.
Tumblr media
Thor: Love and Thunder (7/8/2022)-- 5/10
You know that thing you do where you have two foods you really love, like, individually. Like how I like caramel and i like crawfish, which are two things that are great on their own. And then you do that thing where you go "what if I put those two things I like together!" And suddenly you're eating caramel and crawfish together and you wish you hadn't done that?
That's Love & Thunder and that's pretty much the sum of my feelings on it, if I'm honest. Like, I'm a fan of Taika's work and I like the two threads he did here separately, but not together.
Tumblr media
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (8/18/2022)-- 6.5/10
I could talk at length about this show and good-faith criticism and bad-faith criticism and how one can unintentionally legitimize the other, but I think to be succinct I can sum it up here by saying while I had fun, I think the show, despite the efforts of the female-centered & staffed writing room, fell into a lot of traps, like putting a lot of focus on Jen's dating life. To me that was the biggest mistake. Dating can be a very large part of people's lives, but in the show it did feel like the dating parts outweighed the legal parts, which was a shame because this show had SUCH a great cast of actors playing the other lawyers. Tatiana Maslany was great in the role, but I don't think the writing necessarily always held up to the acting, nor did the lampshading of it at the end in that VERY APPROPRIATE AND KIND OF FUN fourth wall break make up for including it in the first place.
Also Augustus Pugliese you have my heart new favorite side character unlocked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Werewolf By Night (10/14/2022)-- 10/10
Tumblr media
Jack Russell you are my new best friend I love spooky things I love that it was self contained I love EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. No notes. Well done. Blade next.
In Conclusion-- 6.23/10
I think, at this point, I don't really care if MCU Secretly Bad or MCU Actually Good. I think if anything, this phase points to the overall problem for Marvel being that, for the most part, they're feeding us the same thing over and over again. To me, the projects that stuck out the most here were the ones that tried something different. WandaVision experimented with TV tropes. Werewolf By Night was a Hammer horror special.
The ones that scored lowest, however, were either full of shiny but empty distractions or just more of the same.
It's not better than before. It's not worse. You're just too used to eating the same thing.
Order from a different menu.

I gotta say that I think the popular Tumblr criticisms of the MCU that it doesn't care about characters anymore (it's all just meaningless fight scenes) and that it's never earnest or sincere are just flat out incorrect.
Some are better than it than others (and some of them aren't BAD at it, they're just doing something else. Like, Antman 3 and Black Panther 2 are going for wildly different tones) but I think I could point you to a scene in any of the MCU projects that is character focused, is the emotional center of the movie, and is completely earnest. Some (like Wakanda Forever) I could point you to a half-dozen scenes.
I mean... the reaction of Peter when he thinks Rocket's dead, and then of the whole team when they find out he's alive; the funeral scenes of Wakanda forever; the ending of No Way Home; Ikaris and Sersi's final confrontation; the Isaiah Bradley scenes in TFATWS; the scenes with Marc's mother in MoonKnight; Clint talking on the phone with Nathaniel, or his scene with Nat's memorial, or his confrontation with Yelena in Hawkeye. None of those are insincere. And they're all heavily character driven.
Or take Endgame. Endgame has the one massive fight scene at the end, but otherwise is not very action heavy for a movie of its kind, and it spends a lot of its time sitting with the relationships between the main cast. Tony spending time with his daughter. Nebula and Tony stranded in space. Nat and Steve talking about loss. Bruce Nat and Tony laying on the floor planning. Thor talking with Rocket about losing family, and then talking with his mother. The time travel experiment hijinks. The scene of Clint losing his family. VORMIR.
Even a movie like Thor Love and Thunder-- which far more than any other MCU movie, I think DOES have an issue of undermining its characters and emotional beats with jokes-- still manages to have some sincere moments. And when it's not achieving that, I don't think it's because of a particular aversion to sincerity because I've seen enough of Taiki Waititi's work (namely Jojo Rabbit and Hunt for the Wilderpeople) to know that he's capable of having it both ways-- of having emotional depth and his humor side by side without compromising either. It just doesn't work right in Love and Thunder.
If anything I would argue the opposite-- that what the MCU consistently does BEST is character stuff. Consistently the characters are well written and give you moments to know and care about them. And it's more the plot where some people have been less happy with them of late.
