Jawan (2023) Spoiler Review
I urge anyone and everyone to watch it because it is so much fun from beginning to end. Also, SRK is just ugggghhh so damn hot.
Spoilers from here on out.
Alright, let me get this out of the way first: the movie was very massy and I loved it. That said, I wasn't completely blown away by the story and delivery because I'm up to my eyeballs in south Indian mass movies.
Now, there are people who look down on very massy action films. They think it's inferior or not nuanced enough. Some like only certain mass films and think that the ones they like are the superior kind of mass movies. If you're that kind of person, we're gonna have problems.
One, Jawan isn't a mindblowing film BUT it is undeniably a fun film with lots of exciting action, a good and tight storyline, and good songs.
SRK is SRK. There's a reason fans call him King Khan. His charisma is off the charts. He is great as Azad and absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable as Vikram Rathore. I am serious about the unforgettable part. I fear that his next characters, especially if they're older guys, will be compared to the legend Vikram Rathore. I almost wish Atlee would make a sequel because I want to see Vikram again, in his silver fox era, going on missions with his team (and his son somewhere there).
I wasn't really surprised with the DILF in this movie because I do think Atlee has some daddy issues. If you've seen his older movies like Mersal and Bigil, you might have noticed that the dad characters are given banger bgms and better entry scenes (Vetrimaaran and Rayappan, respectively). Vijay's title card in Mersal was Vetrimaaran's theme, while the title card in Bigil has Rayappan's theme/BGM. But Atlee killed them off in those two movies, so he subverted his own tropes in Jawan (THANK GOD BECAUSE WE WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN VIKRAM RATHORE OTHERWISE - sorry, I will not shut up about Vikram okay).
The Girls. Who doesn't love the women of Jawan? Seriously. They absolutely made me giddy with excitement. One, because they were awesome, and we so their backstories and how loyal they were to Azad, and how Azad loved them and was loyal to them, too. Also, that time they called him because he was in the biggest fight of his life (WEDDING NIGHT)! That was honestly the cutest shit ever. If you saw Bigil, Atlee was gunning for that, too, but Bigil is more tamed seeing as it is a sports movie.
Nayanthara and Deepika as they love interests are really good. I was so sad when I learned Aishwarya's fate (shoutout to Atlee who *also* named the mom here Aishwarya -- they're both strong, amazing women). Nayanthara is so damn good and so damn cool (but I am biased towards Jayam Ravi/Nayanthara pairing lmao).
That Sanjay Dutt cameo! Oh, man, I laughed and clapped! I had such a ball of a time. And the revelation that they were friends and he had been helping him all along! Aaaaaah, so satisfying to see honestly. Atlee, why don't you make this a series? I wanna see more of all of them.
Now, on to some things that didn't feel so satisfying to me:
I have seen Vijay Sethupathi play the villain role several times. His performance as Bhavani in Master and Vedha in Vikram Vedha (2017) are tough to beat. It's also really difficult not to compare his performance in Jawan to his performance in those two films because I had such high expectations (yes, I know, my fault a little bit). I feel like his charisma that he usually brings to the table was only seen in small parts, bits and pieces. So, that felt a little bit underwhelming.
Okay, so I like the songs! Anirudh has shown how versatile he is in producing different song genres (but currently movies and fans expect hero-elevation music from him, and that is completely understandable). But I couldn't pinpoint Vikram or Azad's main theme or main bgm. I'm recalling all the Bollywood movies I've watched over the years, and perhaps this isn't a thing in Bollywood films? (Again, if you think having specific bgm for the hero's entry or badass moment is corny, this review isn't for you, sorry, I'm into that shit, I grew up on anime). I know there's a bgm for Azad's entry at the jail and there's literally a song called Vikram Rathore but they just didn't stand out much. You can, of course, argue that SRK doesn't need bgms to elevate him to god-like status. That's true. This is just a me thing, as someone who looks forward to such bgms in mass movies from the south.
OK, I didn't think my review would be this long. I just had many thoughts while watching Jawan. Anyway, like I said, this one is a total banger of a movie. SRK is an absolute joy to watch! What an amazing performer and actor!

TAG 9 PEOPLE YOU WANT TO GET TO KNOW BETTER
Got tagged by @telomeke. Thank you! I appreciate it.
THREE SHIPS 🔹 huh for bl or in general? You know what, i'll do both.
For bl, i don't want to pick the same ones you did because otherwise i'd have nozue/togawa and pat/pran too so
Sound and Win (MSP)
Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi Di (WBL)
Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu (Word of Honor)
For non-bl
Erina/Mito from Food Wars
Barbara and Melissa in Abbott Elementary
Kyotani/Yahaba from Haikyuu!!
FIRST SHIP 🔹 in a fandom-y way, probably something Harry Potter tbh
LAST SONG 🔹 I was gonna say Lonely by R.M. but I forgot I watched a bit of the Legally Blonde musical after that so I think it's actually Whipped Into Shape from Legally Blonde the musical. Those two are wildly different songs but Callahan's verse in whipped into shape is so damn good, i listen to just that section all the time. Lonely on the other hand, I don't listen to all that often because I generally prefer Change prt 2 but it's a really great song on and if I hear it once, it ends up being on repeat for the rest of the day.
LAST MOVIE 🔹 Like telomeke, the last movie that I watched (or atleast remember watching) is a tamil film. It's Mersal. Though I could be getting the order of events wrong and it's actually KGF prt 2 which is a Kannada film. I've lately been in a show vibe so I haven't been watching film unless it's with other people so either way the last one was either Mersal or KGF 2. I lowkey forgot Vijay had a triple role in Mersal, I thought it was only a double role. Plot's watchable enough but the songs are where it's at. This movie's soundtrack was a hit when it came out and I still have the entire soundtrack on my spotify. KGF 2 is only good if you turn your brain off and don't take it too seriously. The background music is spectacular though. And the outfits. I spend the entire almost 3 hour runtime rating Rocky's looks. (man's not afraid to wear a full pink suit ok, definition of nontoxic masculinity /jk)
CURRENTLY READING 🔹 Well, I just finished Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies by Seth Holmes and ofc y'all know i'm on my Haikyuu!! re-read of which I am on volume 8 if notes are to be believed. However, I am miserably failing because the original idea was to read it in chronological order and NOT skip ahead but I have no self-control and keep re-reading bits. Like just the other day, I read the ball-boy arc which led to me reading the Spring Tournament arc and now we're on the last bit of the Kamomedai match and- It's fine though. It's going.
CURRENTLY WATCHING 🔹 What am I not watching is the real question
Attack on Titan
My School President
Bad Buddy (just restarted today)
Moonlight Chicken
The Warp Effect
Abbott Elementary
and I just finished rewatching Old Fashion Cupcake for the fourth time so imma add that too
CURRENTLY CONSUMING 🔹 a box of chocolates that I got for my birthday! They're pretty good.
CURRENTLY CRAVING 🔹 not much at the moment honestly but I really want the Butter Paneer and the payasam I didn't get to eat on my birthday.
ONWARD TAGS 🔹 i feel rude but i don't know who to tag so im just not going to. If anyone sees this and wants to be tagged, go ahead or let me know and I will but my mind's kinda blank

AHHH i'll be the happiest in the world if this does encourage you to pick the wip again! varadeva have become very precious to me because unintentionally neel wrote the most all-consuming dynamic but honestly it just makes sense, if I had a varadha in my life, I too would be outright devoted to him.
today I bring not much but I read the mersal/96 fic and I must I am so in love with how you establish the emotional attachments between the characters, it's just amazing! considering they are cross-movies and yet it just makes complete sense and it very captivating!
with another fic tomorrow, -varadeva anon! have a good day (or night)!
i agree with all of that. the only complaint i had with salaar is that it ended too early.
thank you so much! i'm glad you like reading the other fics as well! ram and maaran's stories fit surprisingly well with each other, and it's good that i've been able to write them convincingly enough~

hi again, im that anon who sent you in the fic :)
the other fics of this author are private unfortunately :(( but they’re really good and id definitely recommend you read them if you get the chance too
there’s surprisingly a lot of fics for south indian films now, the more popular ones would be for rrr & salaar
if you’re looking for kollywood ones specifically, there’s a lot for the lcu films (leo, vikram, kaithi) & ponniyin selvan
i’ve seen a few for 96, mersal and there’s one good one for thupparivalan as well
it’s really nice to see so many fics and that too really well written ones :))
hope this proves helpful to you, sending you loads of love and support!! <33
hi!!
that previous ask you sent just got reblogged and the author said they've lifted the privacy on their fics. so i can see more now, you're right, there're loads! yeah, there seem to be a lot more on ao3 now, so it's nice, i'm glad more people are writing and publishing for tamil cine. i do like both lead pairs in rrr and salaar, so i don't mind checking them out.
feel free to send anything with suriya in it, ha, i'm so starved of them cos idk what even is popular being written for him (i assume it'd be from vikram mostly, given the crossover potential hmmm), but i'd take anything tbh, i'm not fussy as long as the quality is halfway decent like the one you sent. i have actually just read your rec and enjoyed it! thank you so much for sending it over and opening my eyes to the fandom existing on ao3 <<<<333

hey! I just saw your post about relating the song ennai maatrum kadhale to wilmon (and I went and listened and loved it!). I'm tamil (but born and brought up in the uk) and trying to listen more tamil music, so do you have any other reccs? maybe stuff that you feel relates to media like young royals, cause I think that might be a good way into becoming more familiar with the language! thank you :))
oh wow this is so sweet wtf :'DD ofc i'd love to give tamil song recs, not really sure if they wud all resonate with young royals and stuff, but some recent classics are the ponniyin selvan soundtracks, both ps-1 and ps-2 both of em are realllyyy fucking good and if u have teh time, id recommend watching the movies too!! they're really well made :D
will now add a list a song that fit the soft and lovey vibes!!!
(the whole of 3 slaps honestly)
ok so i think this should be a good place to begin fdsjkgjsg as u can see im a huge fan of anirudh, but arr is amazing as well and sometimes ilayaraja slaps it all depends on the mood really but anirudh will never not slap ykn anyways, i might add to this w some fun and vibey songs !!!
also if u feel up to it, i'd absolutely loveee to connect with another tamil person!!! :D

It was fun writing lines for Shahrukh Khan, says Sumit Arora on Jawan
The movie has yet not been released but everyone associated with Jawaan is already basking in its success. Writer Sumit Arora who has written the Hindi dialogues for director Atlee’s Jawan is no expectation. He, during an interview, said that it was fun writing lines for Shahrukh Khan to match his ‘stardom and stature’.
Sumit Arora was born and brought up in Meerut and recently earned a lot of fame for his writing skills. He is enjoying the success of Dahaad and Guns & Gulaabs and with Jawaan set to release next Friday, it is his most awaited project.
When asked if Jawaan was the toughest gig for him, he says, “It was the most enjoyable project.”
“You have to keep in mind that the lines will be delivered by Mr Shah Rukh Khan so you have to keep lines that will justify his stardom and stature, his personality and character,” the writer added.
Sumit also talked about his mesmerization for the director Atlee. Atlee is known for his Tamil blockbusters Mersal and Bigil and makes mass films. With Jawan, Atlee is entering into the Bollywood landscape.
“I had met Atlee when he was thinking of making his first Hindi film. At that point, the idea was to work together, there was no story then. When he had the draft of the screenplay ready, he reached out to me. Nobody makes mass films like he does. I was happy to be part of this journey with him,” the writer said.
Arora also opened up about choosing writing as his career and said that thanks to his mother, he had aonstant exposure to Hindi literature. He also Harishankar Parsai, Sharad Joshi, Ravindranatha Tyagi, Shrilal Shukla and Manohar Shyam Joshi as his major inspiration for picking writing as a choice of career.
“I studied in a Hindi medium school. I didn’t know how to speak English. My mother gave me the habit of reading from an early age, I used to read stories from (magazines) like Nandan, theand n I graduated to literary magazines like Hans, Gyanodaya, and others. By the age of 17 and 18, I had columns published in Hindi newspapers. Satire was my forte,” Arora, a Hindi literature graduate, said recalling his formative years.

rahuuuuuul ,, whatre ur favourite tamil movies !!!! hope ur doing good bro :^)
yuraaaa!! hi hi hello my laddoo!! so sorry for the delayed response lmaoo as soon as you sent me this ask i immediately forgot every tamil movie in existence snfhf but here are some of mine!! i have a v bad memory so i apologise if i missed some classics or if i add to this later! my taste is just... bad and trashy tamil movies, that’s all.
thupparivaalan (this film... the Worst but also the best actually)
kannum kannum kollaiyadithaal (i really gotta thank shrew for making me watch this because it was gr8)
baahubali 1 & 2 (these were originally made in telugu i think but still! the costumes and the acting and the sets and the music and the storyline! the crown jewels of south india as they say!)
i (as in the one with vikram, also the soundtrack in that film is sooo good!)
maari (this is actually mostly because my sister likes that film)
chandramukhi (this film traumatised me so much but... slaps actually)
vijay: nanban, mersal, theri, thuppakki (i used to watch all of this on repeat and multiple times... my household is a vijay stan household okay it’s not my fault ghsnfh)
vijay sethupathi: pizza (this was the first one i saw sethupathi in i think), soodhu kavvum, nannum rowdy dhaan, vikram vedha
rajinikanth: enthiran (the hype around this film when it came out!), thalapathi (with fucking mammootty!), kabali, petta (+ some of his old films also, but idk if you’ll like those and also i barely remember the plot of some of them)
suriya: singam (he was so cool in this film i swearrrr), 24, anjaan
i don’t watch too many ajith or dhanush films (although my family is very fond of dhanush especially) so not a lot of their films have made it onto this! i usually watch tamil films with my family so it’s more likely for us to watch popular trashy ones lmaooo, so do not judge me for my taste, i just like to laugh of these and some of these are genuinely good. either way, i may update this later :^)
hope you are well laddoo!! i love youuuu!!! 💛💛💛

i was tagged by @plvmour to list seven of my comfort films! thank you keith :’) (also i think you’ll find that we overlap in some of our choices)
thupparivaalan (2017): this is also known as ‘dashing detective’ in english and is a shitty tamil film that is essentially a remake of sherlock! this is my absolute #1 comfort film (none of these are in any particular order, but this one is) because of the dynamic between the two leads and how gay and soft they are with each other. also, the story is pretty gripping and the action and fight scenes are fun :’)
spider-man: into the spiderverse (2018): one of my absolute favourite films of all time! i watch this whenever i miss miles or need some kind of empowerment, or i just feel in the mood to enjoy some good art. the animation and storyline is beautiful and makes me feel all warm inside.
moonlight (2016): this film is so beautiful. sometimes i put this on in the background just to appreciate the wonderful cinematic shots and the utter thought put into this amazing art piece of a film. the twists and turns and general tenderness this film holds calms me down and i just love it so much!!
dead poets society (1989): although this one has a tragic ending that makes me kind of sad, the atmosphere this film holds is incredible and it’s so nice to watch it and see all these friends bonding together over something as beautiful as poetry. especially as someone who likes to call themselves a poet, a lot of the speeches and poetry in this film really Get Me.
shubh mangal zyada saavdhan (2020): don’t think i even need to explain this one all that much--this film is just funny and gay and yet somehow serious all at once. rewatching especially the first part of this film comforts me, knowing that india has undergone and will undergo further development regarding to indian lgbt media, and i’m so excited!
star wars: the force awakens (2015): this one is also so nice to rewatch because it’s the film that made me fall in absolute love with the star wars universe and with finn especially, who became one of my most favourite characters. this film is without doubt the best of the sequel trilogy, i love all the characters, all the action, the storyline, and the humour.
the way he looks (2014): this was one of the first pieces of lgbt media i consumed, and i got so excited when i heard they were expanding the short film into a feature film! this one is just so light and fluffy and it’s so nice seeing these two boys falling in love, it’s just absolutely pure and makes my heart feel so warm :’)
honourable mentions:
god’s own country (2017)
thuppakki (2012)
mersal (2017)
thor: ragnarok (2017)
i don’t know who’s done this but i tag @kamikazedandelion, @villiansneedhugs and @gentleman-demon!
