That is a phenomenal question! And a question with a complicated answer.

I've been thinking of Mike's "unconscious" state inside the Fredbear suit as being closer to Mike dissociating like hell, rather than him actually being "asleep" as the kids call it.

Whenever Mike is "asleep," he just feels horrifically numb and hollow and anxious and guilty. At a certain point, the most Michael is used to feeling is guilt as the kids watch over him and Evan starts trying to talk to him, and the residual urge to keep Evan safe.

I think when Fritz first tries talking to him, it terrifies Michael out of his mind because Mike is scared of actually feeling again. He's as scared of positive emotions (attachment to Fritz, amusement at Fritz' jokes, etc) as he is of the negative ones (being afraid of hurting Fritz or Evan, and being afraid that Fritz will end up rejecting him the same way Evan did because Michael views himself as Fundamentally A Bad Person). Plus, there's the simple fact that Michael has never viewed himself as being particularly good with kids adding to Mike's anxiety over the situation.

In a way, Michael spent a long time inside the Fredbear suit dissociating and being locked inside a prison of his own self-doubt, self-loathing, fear, and heartache. Then Fritz comes along and accidentally reminds Michael that he's a person, and this is a scary change for Mike at first. It's safer to be numb, and safer to just be a Thing With The Goal of Ensuring Evan's Safety.

Well, I suppose Fritz isn't the first thing to make Michael more conscious in his mind; that honor would have to go to Michael's fear and horror as he is forced to save the kids from the Fire Night Guard. But Evan's attempts to reach out to Mike after that only succeed in driving Mike straight back into dissociating, because he is terrified that he'll hurt Evan again (and terrified that Ev will hurt him again, too, even if deep down Mike believes he deserves Ev hurting him), he's angry at himself for not having the guts or the right words to reach out to Evan, and for causing all this in the first place.

The first time Mike reaches out to Fritz (aka, the "yo ho ho" scene), was an impulsive decision for Mike. It was partly Mike being uncertain after Fritz presented Mike actually talking to them as being helpful to the kids and Evan when Mike has been thinking talking would be the exact opposite; I think he wanted to test the waters a bit but didn't know what to say, and fell back on the joke. And as much as Mike wouldn't want to admit it, yeah, it had a lot to do with him being lonely, too.

After Mike thinks through that decision to test the waters for more than 0.3 seconds, he decides that nonononononono, that was an awful idea, i should not have done that, nonononono--!

Except Fritz keeps coming back. The kid absolutely will not leave him alone. Fritz keeps tugging at Mike's "I'm not a person, I must be as unobtrusive as possible, it's what i deserve, I must keep Evan safe" safety net with every visit, and eventually it comes away entirely. It's easier to talk to Fritz because, unlike with Evan, there is no guilt over what he did or stress and anxiety over never being able to say the right thing to help Ev heal or show how sorry Mike is for what happened.

Mike is terrified of being a Person again, and he's terrified that some how and in some way he will fuck up Fritz ('because Michael Afton always fucks up everything he touches,' Mike thinks), and he KNOWS that this is only going to end badly, but somehow, after Fritz has visited him several times, Mike is startled to find that he's been looking forward to whenever Fritz will visit him next, rather than feeling anxious about it. And soon enough, despite knowing that he absolutely SHOULD NOT say anything, he just... can't stop himself.

Mike finds that he doesn't just want the other ghost kids to be safe, he wants them to be happy, too. Fritz's disappointment at the recent lack of response and the memory of how happy Fritz was when Mike talked that first time might just have had an impact on Mikey.

Mike ends up wanting to protect Fritz as much as he wants to protect Evan, and maybe Mike is projecting the relationship he could/should have had with Ev onto Fritz, too.

JUST THE EXCUSE I WAS LOOKING FOR

So, for me personally, a lot of the time when I draw fat characters, I'm not looking to specifically capture the specifics of fat as much as the feel of fat. Bulkier, rounder shapes in the right places that has a feeling of weight to em! A lot of that is intuition and simplification at this point, but it all works on the same frame as just any ol' person. Like take this-

For example. This is the basis for any body shape, not just the more average one that it may imply. Sure- it can be that average body shape:

But also a fat one too!

And a big part of that is knowing where fat usually tends to bunch up on the body, so lets take a look piece by piece! (Please keep in mind this is very simplified, and not completely precise in some parts)

THE FACE: Cheeks (in purple) and especially the chin (in light blue) are the places where a lot of the fat is gonna wanna gather and round out on your face! Additionally, theres a small pocket of fat beneath the cranium on the backside of your head. It's small, but it is there. I believe fat can build up elsewhere like the bridge of your nose and forehead, but generally speaking, you're gonna have a whole lot more buildup in other places first.

THE TORSO: A lot of the fat built up on the torso is gonna be sent to your tummy. More cushioning for vital organs, mostly out of the way, it just makes sense. Additionally, the lower backs fat builds up and joins with a patch of fat on your sides that forms what is typically referred to as the love handles to make that double belly look. Along with this, the immediate next target for the torso is the breasts, followed by the upper back!

THE ARMS: For this limb, a VERY notable amount of the fat present builds up on the tricep and bicep areas, lessening once you get towards the flexor and extensor areas. You can almost think of the arm as a sort of triangular shape, wide side starting from the shoulder and tapering towards the hand, which itself mostly builds up fat around the back of the hand and the fingers. The shoulders themselves don't build up too much fat unless you got a lot

THE LEGS: And finally, you can think of the legs having pretty similar curves to what you're probably already used to thinking. The front of the thighs getting a big buildup, along with the back of the calves, the other parts being flatter in turn. As far as the feet go- similarly to the hands, the top of the feet, along with the heels get most of the buildup, as fat on your soles would impede mobility. The glute, hip and crotch area will also especially build up fat, lending to the same triangular shape that you can see in the arm!

A big thing to note with fat is that it tends to taper off towards joints. Your knees, elbows, shoulders, hips, and all the other places are gonna have significantly less fat so that you remain mobile and flexible, as that's important!

Now that we have an idea of where fat builds up on the body, you might have something that looks kinda like this

Which yes, does demonstrate a solid understanding of the places fat builds up, lacks the weight you're probably trying to convey, which brings us to out next point! Fat is well... heavy! Gravity is what gives fat much of it's shape, especially as you tread towards larger and larger bodies.

This is demonstrated really well on the arms especially-

Those big ol' bits of fat'll really start to sag when left hanging, and they will squish like hell if they run into something. I like to think of these bits of fat as big ol' ovals that squash and stretch depending on if there's an obstacle in their way or not

These are the important shapes to remember when it comes to the weightiness of fat! If you take all of this into mind, you should be getting something a lot closer to that shape you've been after!

Oh, and always remember that fat bodies come in all variety of shapes and sizes! Play around with a whole lot, and seek out all the resources you can! it'll really lend to your knowledge when it comes to this kinda stuff!

And as I always recommend when it comes to learning art- look at what your favorite artists do with fat bodies. See what you really like about the fat bodies they draw and try to replicate it in your own work, I promise you it's one of the most helpful things ever.

This is like the most basic of basics when it comes to drawing fat bodies though. If there's any additional thing about fat bodies, or maybe you want clarification on something, don't be afraid to ask! If there's enough to cover, I'll make an addition to this post!

When writing, did you ever suffer from a fear or underdelivering or misrepresenting a topic? If you did, how did you overcome it? I enjoy writing but rarely bring it to the public out of fear that I am either not doing good enough or badly portraying the themes or aspects of what I write.

Absolutely, and on the one hand it's a very healthy fear - it prompts you to do your research and be thoughtful in how you write. On the other hand you've just got to accept that occasionally it will happen. Inculturation is a hell of a thing, and leaves us all with a thousand kneejerk preconceptions and perceptions of the world, some benign and some downright awful. And sometimes they crop up no matter how thoughtful you try to be. And you gotta understand that when it happens and people call you on it, you just have to take your lumps and learn what you can from it.

It doesn't help, of course, that the words you write are only ever half of what your audience reads: five people reading the same book are reading five different books, each filtering the text through a lifetime of psychology and experience. And they will find themes and problems in there you never even considered, and they will also find resonances and beauty in your work that you could never have foreseen.

At the end of the day, writing stuff thats meaningful to you (hell, writing anything at all) is a messy, bruising business, and anybody who tells you there are simple solutions or clear rules to follow is either lying to you or to themselves.

But you can't let it paralyse you. Its like if you're playing football and you're worried about falling over. It's a reasonable fear and you should do your best to avoid it, but occasionally it's gonna happen, and unless you want to spend the whole game just standing still in a field, you've kinda just got to get on with it. Just try not to be one of those writers who's always taking dives and... screaming for the ref to get a free kick? Hm. That analogy may have gotten away from me. I don't actually know much about football.

Point is, I'm aware that this isn't the most reassuring writing advice I've ever given, but yeah, its a messy, scary business. Just do your best. Be thoughtful. Be kind. And always do your research.

this can be seen in a bunch of episodes but my favorite example of it it's the one in half shell heroes where mikey is extremely excited to be in the museums and is the one actively asking donnie questions about the exhibits they saw and also actively listening to donnie's explanation (before raph got silly lmao). he was very excited to learn!!!

I admit I personally prefer showing characters interact with each other and allowing their interaction to be interpreted as either romantic, platonic, or even nothing at all.

I think this approach makes relationships less framed by "signpost cues" of friendship/attraction/love (not that I do not enjoy seeing these either). I think it leaves more room for interesting human interactions, independent of what expectations the reader has for the two characters. Some people seem to search for actions like kissing, hugging, confessions, in order to confirm whether something was supposed to be romantic or not. But then, the absence of such cues make them arrive at conclusions that ignore other forms of relationship-building interactions all together :(

I've always wondered,

Why does Bad carry all his backpacks in his inventory? Why doesn't he wear one on his backpack slot? Even when he had his backpacks in backpacks before the restart he still didn't have one on his back. And it always bugged me, like it's taking up inventory space?

And while watching really old vods (like I'm talking early days of Dapper) I was confused when Bad put his main backpack in his backpack slot and not in his inventory. Because like if he did it then, why doesn't he do it now?

I DISCOVERED THE REASON!

After an amount of hours of vod watching (you will have to pry that number from my cold dead hands, I will never ever share the amount of hours I spend catching up on old vods) I finally found the reason! I feel like I just made like a monumental archeological discovery because it just, a missing puzzle piece has been found. I'm so satisfied now.

I hate myself that I lost which vod this came from but I just wanted to share this because it just, aaaaaaaaaaaa. I'm so happy I have an answer to this unanswered question I've had since I started watching Bad late last year and maybe other Ghosties had the same question?

I found the origin story, buried deep in one of the vods I was watching while falling asleep last night and wrote"backpack because item recovery backpack slot in danger dungeon with dapper" in my notes app at 3am (big props to past Rhia for that, I would've totally forgotten)

And then opened my notes today to note down smth from today's stream, admittedly I don't remember what, but I found the note and remembered I was gonna share my newfound knowledge so here it is!

Bad doesn't wear a backpack on his backpack slot because when you die your artifact slots don't immediately transfer to your body when you hit transfer items. You have to do it twice in order to get all your stuff.

Bad is in a dungeon in which there is no easy way to get Dapper out as soon as things go bad. Bad gets downed and purposely forces the respawn so Dapper won't try to come help him. He set a bed beforehand so he runs back into the dungeon, yelling for Dapper to stay wherever he is. He gets to his body, collects his stuff and goes back to fighting. But THEN he tries to grab something from his backpack and Oops, his backpack is still in his corpse. He gets knocked again, respawns again, gets his items, kills the mobs and THEN he recovers his main backpack.

Dapper was fine, he didn't get knocked at all but the fact that Bad couldn't immediately access his items in an emergency scared him about it happening in a more dangerous situation and he never puts it in his backpack slot again from that day on.

It's another habit he's picked up from being a paranoid babysitter, I finally have an answer! VINDICATION!
