I try my best not to get slightly offended everytime I see Wonder Woman out of place from her trinity position in a Justice League lineup post (usually replaced by Flash or Green Lantern) but I fail every time. It’s not that I’m not up for alternate positioning, but tell me honestly, how often do you see Green Lantern - Batman - Wonder Woman, Superman - Flash - Wonder Woman, or just other combination of trinity position where Batman or Superman instead is replaced by another Justice League member, hmm? Because off the top of my head I genuinely cannot think of any. We have ONE (1) female founding Leaguer and she rarely gets the respect she deserves beyond lip service anyway.
By the way, BOTH suggestions I offered makes more sense anyway because Flash / Batman have their detective schtick, Green Lantern / Superman are regularly compared, so it makes sense to have occasional swap with those but tell me in what way Green Lantern or Flash have been regularly compared to Wonder Woman? Because there is none that I can think of.

War of the Gods:
This was an event that it helped to know, going in, was beset with problems due to editorial issues. It made a lot of things more explicable.
I enjoyed Circe, her plotting, and the story really bathing in the symbolism of Diana as a daughter formed of clay. I also liked how Perez pulled material from his entire run to lead into this story.
That said, yeah it’s a hot mess of an event and difficult to read in a coherent fashion. There are crowds of characters who turn up literally due to the fact they also took part in COIE, and Perez wanted a really grand scale for the event.
I would not recommend this as anyone’s first DC event. However if you’re used to reading DC events this is just a sloppy one.
Fascinatingly, some of the most necessary tie ins for the whole plot were in Doctor Fate. Guess which title has not been uploaded to DCUI yet?? (Guess what DCUI decided to hide from me apparently, great job as always)
Comments on various tie-ins:
Doctor Fate certainly had things going on at the time of this event but showed up anyway carrying a lot of the meat of the comic.
Flash and Batman were both perfectly acceptable and actually on topic for the event, something not necessarily guaranteed in other titles!
Captain Atom: I have no intention of reading more here but one issue managed to simultaneously juggle tie in status of War of the Gods, Armageddon 2001, and still advance its own plot. That took some doing.
Sorry Ostrander but Hawkworld seems incredibly boring.
Starman seemed ok? I was mostly amused by Phantom Lady being in it. Trust JSA characters to be all over any book led by a JSA member.
Hawk & Dove somehow managed to fit a tie in into its final issue before Armageddon 2001 destroyed everything. I can see why people like the title.
Justice League Europe is another JL team that certainly exists, like most during this era who aren’t the core JLI lineup.
Animal Man may actually be close to convincing me to give it a try.
The Demon - I really should get back to reading more Etrigan so I understand why the rhyming had swapped people in this issue.
The New Titans: Wally deserved to grump at everyone in this title, also stop including Terry Long in scenes if all he’s going to do is be a sexy lamp crying about ‘where is Donna’ challenge.
LEGION was something I mostly skimmed as my patience with Lobo tends to be pretty low, especially in early 90s comics.
Suicide Squad was completely gratuitous but hey at least they got to hang out with Buddy Baker for a bit???

Year in Review: 2023
Happy 85th to the Champion of the Oppressed! Big year for him in every medium. Let's take stock as we bid farewell to 2023.
Comics
Tumblr media
First off the biggest Superman comic event was the launch of the new Superman ongoing by Williamson and Campbell. Williamson surprised me by turning in what is easily his best work at DC here. Drawing on a wide range of Superman stories, but mainly inspired by the DCAU animated series, Williamson has turned in the successor series to the excellent Mark Millar Superman Adventures run. If like me you've craving some peak Livewire content, to see Jimmy Olsen hook up with Silver Banshee, or just what the hell it looks like when Clark and Lex try to work together, this run delivers that in spades. Campbell is a fantastic artist who is a key factor in the run's success, which is why it's a bummer that he still has yet to return to interiors. Perhaps next year. Praying Williamson manages to finally turn in a good event with House of Brainiac, because all the build up has gotten me excited in spite of Williamson's previous failures with Dark Crisis and Knight Terrors.
Across the street we had PKJ and Sandoval on Action Comics, which despite being billed as a team book, really is just a Superman book that had the Superfamily in it. Metallo finally got cracked for me as a character here, even though I was disappointed the true final boss of his arc turned out to be Hank Henshaw. Sadly this turned out to be PKJ's last year on the book, finishing his run in Dec and handing it off to a rotating team of "Superstars" next year. Consolation prize is that PKJ says he will be writing Superman in whatever else he has in development, and he's teased more is coming with the future House of El characters he created. Likely means he will be taking over JL, and if he makes that a stealth Superman book which follows up on Action plot threads the way Hickman Avengers ended up being a story about Reed Richards, I'm all aboard.
For the other Superfamily members we got more content that we've had in ages. Conner's mini was a fun DBZ inspired series about the Boy of Steel kicking ass in outer space and figuring out what he wants from life. Supergirl got a neat Special from Tamaki in the vein of King's Woman of Tomorrow, and an excellent team up issue with Martian Manhunter vs. Doomsday by Watters and Barrows. Power Girl had a series of great backups in Action by Leah Williams and Sauvage and then a much more mixed-ly received ongoing series. Despite being his freshman comics assignment, Dorn turned in a solid Steelworks mini that continued the Steel/Lana romance that Pak set up after Bendis seemed to backtrack from it. Yang even came back to write a backup for Kenan that made me want to see Yang take over Action from PKJ on a permanent basis. Jon continues to flounder under Taylor's pen, with the awful Adventures of Superman mini cementing that Jon as a character is basically unsalvageable.
Last for the mainline we have Waid and Mora still on World's Finest. Waid had the opposite trajectory as PKJ, staring the year weakly with a frankly boring Amazo arc. His second arc of the year turned out to be the weakest take on Superman and Batman's first meeting I've ever read, with Waid's Silver Age fanboyism and refusal to have the two be at odds resulting in tepid interactions against an underwhelming villain in Jax-Ur. Despite that, Waid managed to assuage fears he was washed with a return to Kingdom Come arc that follows up on what happened to Boy Thunder. World's Finest managed to end the year as one of the strongest books in DC's lineup. Mora of course managed to compensate for Waid's fall off in writing with peak art and action at all times.
Elseworlds wise we had the first issue of the fantastic Last Days of Lex Luthor by Waid and Hitch, Cantwell and Rodriguez writing a solid Superman three parter in The Brave & The Bold anthology, Russel managing to overcome my butthurt over Batman eating up far too many pages in Space Age, and Priest writing Superman undergoing a cosmic odyssey in Lost. Sadly Venditti's follow up mini to his sleeper hit in Superman '78 has thus far been underwhelming, so not everything has been a banger.
Tumblr media
Obviously one of the biggest surprise announcements was the return of Joe Casey to DC, and the Superman corner specifically with a Zod book. Pitching it as his effort to make Zod into Superman's Dr. Doom, and intended as a direct violent opposite to his run making Superman a pacifist, this announcement has my attention and interest. Perhaps we may finally be on the verge of Zod getting his due in the comics. Tomasi meanwhile is doing a Sinister Sons mini that features Lor paired with the son of Sinestro, which might be connected to this is some way.
Media
Tumblr media
The first Superman cartoon since the 90s in My Adventures With Superman turned out to be an utter delight. Strong performances from the main trio of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy make this show the best take on all three, and the rest of the Daily Planet crew have never been better than they have been here. Weak approaches to Superman's Rogues was balanced out by three all time takes on General Sam Lane, Mxy, and Parasite. Cannot wait for S2 and thus far the reception seems to have been positive (overreaction to Lois aside), offering the hope that more seasons may be ordered. The other animated Superman and Supergirl of the Tomorrowverse had a solid showing in the Legion of Superheroes movie, but Justice League Warworld turned out to be an overambitious mess. Next year we will be getting a CoIE trilogy that seems poised to kill off the nascent Tomorrowverse, which was met with shrugs of indifference.
S3 of Superman & Lois managed to be a step up from the previous season thanks to the excellent performance of the actor playing Bruno Mannheim, the villain of the season. Hoechlin, Tulloch, and Parks continued to shine, and the show managed to beat the odds and be renewed for one final season to wrap things up before Gunn debuts the next film Superman. New actor for Jon also managed to be quite good, and Jordan seems to have realized what a shit he was being. rooting for this show to land the plane because it was enjoyable despite it's many shortcomings.
On the film side we officially got a new Superman and Lois in David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, with Nicholas Hoult playing Lex Luthor, for James Gunn's Superman: Legacy. Holding out hope for one other Superman Rogue to be added to this, either Lobo played by Momoa or Brainiac. All of the casting thus far has been on point and it's certainly paints a picture of either ambition or hubris on Gunn's part to cast so many heroes. Otherwise the script for the Supergirl movie has been written already, hinting that Supergirl might be next up after Superman for release. Sasha Calle will apparently not be reprising her role, no surprise considering The Flash turned out to be one of the biggest bombs ever despite blatant nostalgia bait with CGI ghosts of previous actors including Cage, Reeves, and Reeve.
On the video game side everything remains awful, but that's just the default for Superman alas.
Tumblr media
Not a bad year honestly. Wish we got news a Superman video game was in dev or got a renewal announcement for MAWS, but otherwise I'm optimistic about the state of Superman outside of comics for the first time in ages. Inside comics I continue to mostly enjoy the Superman books, excited to find out if PKJ is getting JL, but am concerned this Superstars initiative for Action is going to be dismissed as filler.
We've got Aaron/Timms, Williamson/Sandoval, Waid/Henry, and one last mystery team next year, and I want to throw Tom King's hat into the ring as the guy to take over Action. He wants to write a Superman ongoing, he's pals with Gunn, he's ignited excitement and interest in WW again amongst the general audience for the first time since Rucka, and he'd be a good balance to Williamson in terms of tone and content. If not him then Ram V (who recently expressed interest in doing Superman with Doc Shaner), or Gene Yang would also be excellent choices.

You put justice league in your fave superhero teams so out of curiosity what's your favourite league line up that you've read /seen
genuinely just the regular old original jl lineup with the main 6 +dinah&ollie&vic, idk i like their dynamic, it may be a boring answer but like theyre just the classic superhero team
the one that always sticks in my mind is the justice league war animated movie, its not my favourite justice league origin but it was really fun to watch, i think its based off the n52 comics but ive not read them

Do you have any more detailed thoughts about your hypothetical Vibe tv show? Like with other characters you'd bring in or actors or animation style or anything? It just sounds really interesting and your thoughts on JLAs Vibe are just fun to hear all around
i know the names of 0 actors so animation time :) also this is long because you activated my trap card so i put it under a cut.
i hate the current dc artstyle we’re stuck with and i’m glad we’re branching out to new ones for shows (like the new dc superhero girls style and justice league action). i’d like it to be...about as kid-friendly as young justice or justice league/justice league unlimited, where it can tackle serious topics and not speak down to its audience but still technically be a family thing. JL(U) specifically was very formative for me, clunky style and all.
i would be altering a lot of the league-specific stuff. the justice league already exists, they formed to combat darkseid’s invasion five years prior to the main story (opening scene/etc, adapted pretty much directly from the comic), but the stuff with waller is very different. instead of directly forming a team to take down the justice league, she just starts contacting people who she wants to control that she could hypothetically use to take down the league without connecting them to each other (similar lineup as in the comics, probably). importantly, they never interact--cisco should feel as isolated as possible from the rest of the superhero community.
the bart stuff is changed because i don’t wanna deal with bar torr. now waller pits cisco against daniel, who is part of the suicide squad and therefore also already in her pocket, but who she deems to be expendable. cisco wins but offers to help him with whatever waller sent him after, then when daniel is recaught by argus cisco is like hey don’t do that :( and the suicide squad sees that hey this kid’s not bad.
two other very important plotlines are dante investigating argus because he Doesn’t Trust Like That and cindy... who i have changed A Bit to mesh her canons together even though she’s still based on her n52 version. basically now the earth she’s from is specifically one of the dead earths in our current multiverse map (and she’s roma like she is in the main dc canon, of course). her dad smuggled her to earth-1/prime/whatever we’re using now when she was little, but the family he placed her with was killed by argus agents trying to capture her because she’s leaking some serious multiversal energy. when they fail, they send in cisco, who is like hey what the fack :( don’t do that (x2) and they start going on the run together.
i think there will honestly be a good episode or so about them just...being on the run from argus agents along with dante, that ends in the suicide squad being forced to capture cisco and cindy, but they let dante go because cisco was nice to daniel and honestly...was probably nice to them too whenever he had interactions with them. so fair is fair.
then we get a pretty straightforward adaptation of issue six with dante convincing dale (he and casey have A Big Presence in the show) to help him rescue cisco and cindy by extension. big armando reveal, because of course. that’s at the end of an episode, and the next episode opens with what happened when armando crashed on piradell and was found...by cindy, not by her mother, who tried to help this stranger and ended up watching them get turned into a weapon by mordeth anyway.
stuff keeps going, i’m trying not to do an episode by episode breakdown, but there are some changes made to the piradell stuff where quell’s lil team is alternate earth versions of the people waller was planning on using as failsafes for the JL!! no cisco, but we get an alt-earth hawkgirl (i will not be using hawkman), an alt-earth green lantern, an alt-earth katana, an alt-earth stargirl, etc. i think that’s more fun than it just being strangers. quell also specifically got all his Everything fucked up while he was smuggling cindy to safety across dimensions, and had to sacrifice his physical form to save her life, so he’s obviously pretty pissed that mordeth has her (step) daughter back again.
adaptation goes pretty normally from there, but cindy gets some more agency in her kidnapping where she’s able to escape using something she probably learned from dante or from the family who took her in (or both!). cisco rescues armando, etc etc etc--
end teaser is the same, but before that once cisco is back on earth we see him contacting everyone else waller was going to use as a failsafe and being like “hey these were her true intentions. kinda fucked up actually! anyway peace out.”
season two would be about The JL Detroit Lite forming to rescue armando :) the lineup would specifically be cisco, cindy, jason & ronnie as firestorm, hank, mari who is here because she went holy FUCK you are ALL TEENS?? after she bonded with cindy (they’re SISTERS!!!), and j’onn, who came from the justice league to find out exactly what in the fucking hell is going on in detroit.
(there’ll be a scene where they’re trying to decide on a team name and can’t. like
“teen titans? no, wait, that’s still taken. does lex luthor still own the copyright for infinity inc?” “i dunno, probably. what about the challengers of the unknown? we definitely challenged the unknown to rescue armando.” “did you read that off a cereal box? i like ‘the outsiders.’” “that one’s taken too, i think.”
etc, etc, etc. just because i think it’d be cute.)
anyway! i’ll stop writing now because my hand hurts very badly but..... i would like to make it.

What are your ideal JLA and Avengers lineups? Keep in I WILL judge you if J'onn isn't included
I really like the Justice League animated series lineup with Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Manhunter, Flash, Hawkgirl and John Stewart. I love that that is the current lineup in the comics.
As for Avengers to be honest I really dont care about the them as much as the JL. But I like when She-Hulk (duh) Spider-Woman and Janet Van Dyne are on the team. Idk why but I always liked Janet.

Wait a Fucking Minute...
If Superman, Batman, Flash, and Cyborg are all in the BOP cast list...
And obviously, Black Canary and Huntress are in this....
That's a Whole Justice League.
Like.... That's a fucking Solid JL lineup. Better than Most JL lineups we've gotten outside of Animation. (Smallville did include Mera which was A++ but like)
What the ever loving fuck does this even MEAN????
Are Dinah and Helena going to join the league or are they going to be active members of the team already or....
What??????

Have you seen the JL movie and do you have any thoughts???
Oh, wow, hello!
Yes, I saw JL just yesterday, and I’m a big fan! I’m not sure exactly what you were wondering about specifically, but here are a few things (possible spoilers ahead!):
Aquaman’s reluctance to join the team? A+ Arthurian reference. Also, Jason Mamoa is wonderful. More Mera desired.
Bruce Wayne admitting that his only power is wealth and that he impulsively just buys banks? Fabulous.
DIANA PRINCE THUMPING BROOS ACROSS A ROOM IS MY EVERYTHING
Ezra Miller’s facial expressions. That is all.
Diana resetting Bruce’s shoulder was actually a really great moment for me. Very warrior-on-warrior interaction. I could have done without the suggested romance (I’m callin’ you out JW).
ALFRED ON POINT
“I’m sorry. Do I know you?”
Victor Stone just needs more love, okay, Bruce? Diana understands.
Honestly Vic’s tone of voice throughout the whole thing was very soothing.
There was obviously no need for you to reshoot the Superman scenes, JW. You just wanted to make Henry Cavill’s face look slightly off because you’re jealous.
Why is the Superman suit brighter??????
A+ playlist
I think DC has figured out group character dynamics due to their extensive work in the animated universe. They’ve been doing team-up and large-cast stories for so long (Justice League, Young Justice, Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Gotham, along with various spin-offs and crossovers) that I think they had a better handle on how to manage so many characters within a single plot line than Marvel seemed to with Captain America: Civil War (admitting Marvel’s experience and success with the X-Men franchises, and that I’m not quite as familiar with them; also their work on Defenders and Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., which is pretty decent). Regardless, in terms of team dynamics, I think that Justice League was far better paced than Civil War, and I just really, really appreciate the way the major DC films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League) are so seamlessly integrated using end-to-beginning links. (Also, on this note, let me be clear: I liked Civil War; it just wasn’t my favorite.)
Why does the root of all evil in American consciousness grow in Russia? Like. I don’t understand? The movie did so well in dealing with current social issues–including anti-immigrant imagery–so early on in the film that I don’t know why the Motherboxes were assembled in Russia. That seemed contrived and contrary and made me sad. Do better, America.
Big fan of the Superman/Wonder Woman head-butting match.
“Booyah.”
“He’s more human than I am.”
“You know that if she killed you, we’d cover for her, right?”
(Roughly equivalent first line, probably not accurate): “I didn’t want them to see the monster.”“Nobody thinks you’re a monster!”“I like how you thought I was talking about me.”
*stage whisper* PET CEMETERY
I could go on, but ultimately, I really, really liked it, and thought the movie was a great addition to the DC feature film lineup. Thank you DC!
I’m happy to chat about specifics if there was a point in the movie you were more interested in, or something logistically you wanted me to talk about but I didn’t. Just send an ask!

So, in your opinion, Kyle Rayner should/could never be the leading Green Lantern on a big JLA run, with a top writer and artist on the book, ever again?
Should he? I have no objection to that happening, Kyle's time with the JLA under Morrison was great!
Could he? Well sure he could but it's unlikely to happen. Hal, John, and Jess have larger fanbases and more mainstream awareness because of their adaptions outside of comics. Even Guy appears more often in cartoons and what not than Kyle. Last place Kyle showed up in-person was in STAS if I remember right apart from a hologram cameo in JL vs FF.
Most writers are going to pick Hal or John not Kyle for their JL lineups. That's a result of the DCAU and the various other animated products/video games spotlighting those two. Unless DC starts giving Kyle a push (take note that Kyle isn't in the GLC show nor was he slated to appear in the GL movie making him the odd man out), I find the idea that a top writer/artist team would pick Kyle over Hal or John far-fetched.

How would you rate Marvel and DC's showings at SDCC?
Marvel was great. DC was terrible. I should be at the point now where I don't let that bother me as it's been the case ever since BvS, but damnit I'm not happy with the state of DC outside the Trinity.
Tumblr media
Running down the list for Marvel:
Comics - Obviously the big news is Hickman writing a "Sandman" for Marvel. My guess is it's either a Dr. Strange book, or a book focused on the Marvel Abstracts (Death, Order, Chaos, the Living Tribunal, etc). Of course I will be picking that up Day 1. Otherwise the Tradd Moore Dr. Strange book sounds interesting, I'm hopeful that the new F4 creative team will come out guns blazing, Aaron is finally off Avengers but we don't know what's next for him, there's going to be a "Cold War" Captain America event featuring Steve and Sam, Cantwell is leaving Iron Man with issue 25, and he's doing a Namor book and another book where Osborn will be a hero going by the moniker "Gold Goblin". Krakoa will last until 2024 at least which is when they might start entering the second act of Hickman's plan. None of the Spider-Man teases interested me.
Animation - Goddamn but that Spider-Man cartoon sure interests me! Gorgeous art style, finally a Marvel cartoon with an actual budget again. They say it's set in the MCU but that can't be true. You've got Norman and Otto showing up here which would outright contradict No Way Home, and Peter gets a classic costume. I assume this is set in the "MCU Multiverse" like the What-If series, on a different Earth. Can't wait to watch, would be nice if we could have great Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man cartoons all running simultaneously like the 90s again. Never seen the X-Men 90s cartoon but maybe I'll go watch that and check out the revival.
Film/TV - Aside from Spider-Man, Blade, and F4 I don't have any interest in the upcoming Marvel slate. Maybe I'll go see the Avengers movies but right now I'm scaling back. Hot damn did this show the confidence invested in Feige all the same, even coming off of the worst Marvel Phase yet he still is able to get people excited over a bunch of logos. That Wakanda Forever trailer was beautiful but I can't help feeling bitter over what it means for T'Challa.
Tumblr media
For DC
Comics - Williamson's big "reveal" only elicited eye rolls and groans from what I've seen. Nobody cares about infinite Earths when you can't even put out books featuring anyone but the Bats. Aside from two Static books and a YA Superman book, EVERYTHING else was Batman related. I get that DC likely wants to hold back on revealing what's coming in 2023 until we're deeper into Dark Crisis, but it's painful to see how small the DCU has shrunk compared to Marvel. They're not even trying right now.
Animation - The only interesting reveal was the 2023 DTV lineup of JL/RWYB, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, Legion of Superheroes, and JL: Warworld. Only Legion and Warworld caught my eye, not a RWYB fan, and DtctG's main appeal is the Mignola art which I doubt they can afford to replicate. Other two seem to be the Tomorowverse movies, and both are likely going to star Superman in a lead role given Legion has his symbol in the promo and Warworld is self-explanatory. That takes the sting out of him not getting his own solo movie for his 85th at least. Ideally Legion would be an adaption of the Johns/Frank Superman & the Legion of Superheroes arc, and Warworld would be an adaption of PKJ's Warworld Saga, with the League replacing the Authority, but it's just as likely they will be original stories. Guess the rumors of a CoIE trilogy were false, no matter I'm not a huge fan of that story anyway. Edit: Looks like the Legion story is going to be Superman introducing Supergirl to the team, that could still be fun although I hope Clark is more involved than just passing her off to them and disappearing.
Film - Shazam 2 looks funny but I expect it to be another modest success. Black Adam looks cool but everyone was hoping the rumor Cavill would show up was true, and weren't happy when it didn't happen. Deadline wouldn't usually report "buzz" if there wasn't at least plausible cause but this time they looked like fools. Cavill and WB have been playing a game of chicken for five years and I'm tired of it. If you're seriously going to let the Rock put a post credit scene in BA that sets up a showdown with Superman, fucking get a Superman. Either give Cavill another solo movie like he wants or recast the role, because Cavill is not going to blink. Damn if WB doesn't look sad right now, can't even promote their 2023 movies because of the Miller and Heard controversies, never mind talking about the future.
DC got bodied this year. Speculation that they're saving reveals for Fandome feel far fetched to me given A. the likelihood that there are changes to the slate coming because of the restructure and Hamada's likely departure, and B. last year they announced a date for Fandome in April and it's almost August now. I don't think we'll get a Fandome this year because everyone is waiting for Zaslav to pick his new DC head and then they'll be the one to start greenlighting pitches. Five years since Snyder got kicked out and DC is still a mess. What a waste.
