All About the Seven Clans: The Spriton
THIS POST CONTAINS EVERYTHING I COULD FIND ABOUT THE SPRITON. SOME INFORMATION WRITTEN HERE ARE FROM OLDER MATERIAL AND MAY EITHER CONTRADICT STATEMENTS OR IS NO LONGER RELEVANT. I WILL DO MY BEST TO STRING IT ALL TOGETHER AS COHERENTLY AS POSSIBLE. IF THERE IS INFORMATION THAT I AM MISSING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I’LL ADD IT!
Clan Index: Dousan Drenchen Grottan Sifa Spriton Stonewood Vapra
OVERVIEW
The Spriton were a farming clan that occupied the southern plains of Thra. Although well known for their knowledge in agriculture and husbandry, they were also experts in textile creation and other fine arts. Due to their location and way of life, they were the most important providers of grains and produce for other clans. Interestingly in other media, usually older works, the Spriton were a warrior clan instead.
The Spriton totem animal was the Landstrider and their core elements were the earth, its foundation, and protection of the land and its creatures . Both their clan and sigil colors were green and their pennant colors were beige with green and gold detail.
Characteristics
Most Spritons had dark or tanned skin and were sometimes covered in freckles. Their hair was dark-colored or black and were only ever worn in single braids. Decoration was minimal with only adorning their hair with small beads. A Spriton's eyes were noted to be "jewel-toned", usually light in color. Grey and off-white yellow or green were fairly common with darker greens and browns being rarer exceptions. Thanks to their lifestyles, Spritons were athletic and graceful. Spriton wings were noted to be long and narrow which were good for speed and agility. In the books written by J.M. Lee, one Spriton named Gereni had bright green wings. Older gelfling commonly had sun-worn skin and calloused hands.
Spriton clothing were simple, described as russet colored with autumnal qualities or earthy tones that matched their environment. Reds and browns in particular were extremely common. Plenty of gelfling from this clan wore head coverings which protected their heads from the Three Suns. Despite its simplicity, Spriton fashion displayed beautiful textile work with a unique stitching style not seen in other clans.
Lifestyle
The Spriton were a traditional clan that valued hard work and generational knowledge. Performing daily tasks kept the community thriving as well as providing clothes and food for other clans. Their agricultural livelihoods revolved around season events like the trine cycle as well as ninents or greater seasons, which were one hundred trine in length. It was very important for memories to be passed on to ensure the success of crops for future generations. Living in harmony with Thra’s plants and creatures was also a tenet in Spriton culture. This stemmed from the Song of the Six Sisters where the Spriton’s first maudra was tasked with not only taking care of the land but also its foundation and animals.
The Spriton were a medium-sized community whose population was comparable to the Drenchen's. Most Spritons lived in the clan's hometown Sami Thicket, but branched out into smaller villages and singular houses and farms along the Spriton Plains. The Spriton were some of the first clans to had spread outside their main village. Even the Stonewood, who had a larger population, didn’t stray too far from their home village until well into the Age of Division. A Spriton family unit usually consisted of three to six gelfling. Despite the distance from their hometown, the Spriton never lost their sense of community. Whenever families returned to Sami Thicket to give crops, practice trading, or for special occasions, they were always welcomed warmly.
Daily Routine
A day in the life of a Spriton consisted of long work days that started when the suns rose and stretched on well after dark. In Sami Thicket, and perhaps in some neighboring villages, an hourly bell was rung so the Spriton never got too lost in their work. When younglings grew to the age of apprenticeship, they were selected by mentors to begin training. They were put into a work group that was monitored by two elders. Younglings also refined their riding and hunting skills by participating in sports like bola-throwing and knock-knee, a race-and-ball game played on the backs of Landstriders. In the book series, they were also trained in combat and to fight with a spear.
Because Spriton had a variety of jobs, they were divided into three main categories:
Hearth Workers: This group focused on tasks of integrated care of the hearth and home. Occupations included caregivers, woodworkers, songtellers, musicians, hearth workers (sometimes also called fire workers), bell ringers, food servers, and artisans like weavers, stitichers, and craftsmen. This group emphasized on building and maintaining the physical homes as well as replenished the hearts and spirits of the Spriton. Artisans were also seen as integral to the clan as their tapestries and other creations preserved their way of life.
Dirt Workers: Dirt workers protected the land and cultivated the clan’s many gardens in Sami Thicket and nearby fields. They were largely farmers, but also consisted of animal breeders and maintainers. They kept oral records of seasonal wisdom by marking the passing of time using sun-sticks posted in fields and horticultural and agricultural knowledge from previous generations. Dirt workers tended to creatures by tracking their numbers and observing their health. They believed that the health of the animals represented the health of the land.
Path Workers: Path workers were traders. Gelfling with these jobs were responsible for sorting, preparing, counting, and trading Spriton products. They were strong in numbers and noted for their adventurous and outgoing personalities who used their intelligence, sharp tongues, and charismatic smiles to sell their items. A popular saying “as smooth as a Spriton wagon driver” was inspired by them. Spriton traders often traveled outside of Sami Thicket, mostly staying within the plains but ventured to Stone-in-the-Wood and even Har’rar.
Spriton Crafts
The Spriton were renowned for their crafts as much as their expansive knowledge on agriculture. They covered just about everything from textiles and quilts to tools and weapons. Although, in regards to their metalwork, it was not as refined as the Stonewood’s and Vapran’s due to the dearth in materials. Spritons opted to work mainly with charmed wood, fiber, and substances from both vegetables and animals which were magically bounded. Needlework in particular was considered a highly valued talent within Spriton communities as it was believed they were the stitchers of the gelfling clans.
Spriton textiles were easy to spot with its exposed stitchwork, extensive variety of magically-enhanced colors, and embroidery. They were highly sought out by other clans, especially the fashion-oriented Vapra. Their sandals were particularly famous not just for their beauty but also because of how sturdy they were. Spriton wool, which were spun from the coats of various plains creatures, were popular especially when dyed from one hundred pigments made in Sami Thicket.
As previously mentioned, Spriton crafts sported a unique style. While craftsmen in other clans hid binding agents like threadwork in shoes and tangle-weed in pottery, the Spriton purposely exposed them. They believed that if it weren’t for them, the craft would fall apart. Highlighting these parts was the Spriton’s way of showing respect to them. Exposed threadwork was incorporated artistically with patterns on clothing and shoes. Tangle-weed, which made clay more durable, was dyed in beautiful vibrant colors.
Some other examples of Spriton craftsmanship were their lyres and bolas. While lyres from other clans had six strings, Spriton lyres had seven. The seventh string was spun from Vapran metal which clans were given through trading. It gave the lyres a sublime character and was said to have emulated the voice of Thra. Spriton bolas were better than ones produced by other clans as it had longer rope with smaller stones, which made it easier to throw and reached farther distances.
Dream-stitiching
Dream-stitching was a type of magic that originated from the Spriton. It was a skill that combined elements from dreamfasting and dream-etching, which had the ability to fasten memories onto a physical object that invoked all senses and stirred imagination. The object could be anything: books, paintings, tapestries, or even stones or plants. This skill was difficult to master and was only taught by the Spriton maudra.
Kylan, a dream-stitcher, displayed noteworthy forms of the art. In the TV series, Kylan dream-stitched Brea’s memory of her mother within a Glider Seed so that others could know the All Maudra like she did. His skills in the book series were even more remarkable as he bounded Tavra’s soul upon the body of a crystal-singer and spread the message of the gelfling resistance on the Sanctuary Tree’s petals with dream-stitching.
Animal Husbandry
Much like their knowledge of land, the Spriton knew plenty about Thra’s diverse creatures, dating as far back as the Age of Harmony. Dirt workers were the ones responsible for training and handling animals. They knew animal calls and methods that taught them certain commands. Many of these animals helped the Spriton in their daily tasks. For example, Mounders used their digging abilities to create irrigation channels in fields that helped Spriton crops.
Landstriders
Landstriders, the totem animal of the Spriton were the most notable animals among the clan. In fact, it was common belief by other clans that all Spritons were experienced Landstrider riders. Riding one was noted to be difficult for newcomers and it took time for the creatures to get used to a saddle. But trainers created a system that made the Landstriders comfortable giving gelfling rides if they were given treats in exchange (usually roasted fruits or nectar). While their eyesight was poor, they had impeccable hearing and could “see” by listening to the echoes of their hoofbeats. They could be ridden during both the day and night, but weren’t good for stealth as their hooves produced loud sounds. During times of war, Landstriders were given armor, even on their legs. While this slowed them down, lining them together made for an affective barricade.
Spriton cared for Landstriders within several large herds. They were given plenty of freedom to roam in large meadows with built structures for them to take shelter with eating-troughs and trenches from nearby rivers for fresh water. These living spaces formed positive relationships between Landstriders and gelfling. These bonds became especially important during the late Age of Division as they were the only animals capable of fighting off the Garthim thanks to their swift speed.
Swoothus and Windshifters
Swoothus and windshifters were other notable Spriton animals. They were used for delivering messages all throughout gelfling settlements. While windshifters were faster, they were more aloof and easily distracted. Swoothus, on the other hand, were slower but easier to train and performed better especially when motivated by food. They were capable of understanding speech and specific commands as well as recognizing multiple locations.
Like with Landstriderss, bonds of trust formed between Swoothu or Windshifters and their trainers. With Swoothus, it came to the point where they’d visit their trainer even when there were no messages to send. Younger Swoothu tended to not stray too far from Sami Thicket until they gained the courage or curiosity to fly farther out. Sometimes they hitched a ride with their trainers or traders until they’re ready to fly off. By then, they mainly traveled to major gelfling settlements like Stone-in-the-Wood, Har’rar, and the Castle of the Crystal.
Cohabitating With Podlings
While podlings had always co-existed with gelfling, the harmony between them and Spritons were the greatest. The relationship between the two were very communal and so close that they adapted cultures and characterstics from one another. Gelfling from Sami Thicket and neighboring villages commonly spoke podling tongue.
Podlings lived alongside their fellow Spritons in Sami Thicket, having houses nestled in between the gelflings’. They worked alongside the gelfling in various jobs, shared everything together, and even raised within the same nurseries. The two species took part in each other’s holidays or traditions, like podling funerals. Spritons and podlings alike gathered by the Pavilion and prepared the body for service and burial.
Diet
Thanks to the Spriton’s knowledge in agriculture and crops, they found ways of growing fruits and vegetables not normally found in their region, elongated growing seasons, and yielded bigger crops. Because of the large bounty of produce, a Spriton’s diet was heavily relied on fruits and vegetables. Meat was consumed rarely and when they did the gelfling carefully picked a creature, quickly slaughtered it, and gave it their respects.
Spriton cuisine involved mixing greens with vegetables and fruits. Produce was sometimes marinated in a tangy sauce or seasoned with fire-toasted seeds or nuts. Spriton cheese was treasured and came in great variety, from soft spreadable to harder cheeses suited for grating and melting. The cheeses were widely sought out by other clans and fetched good prices, especially in giant markets like the ones in Har’rar where such foods were hard to come by.
One notable Spriton delicacy was the sweet cherry squash. Cherry squashes were roasted which gave them a savory sweet taste. They were saved for special occasions like visits from the skeksis during tithe and census ceremonies. Other Spriton foods included dried squash and emroot.
Festival of the Sour Squash
This was an autumn holiday that celebrated the harvest of the sour squash. The ripeness of the squash signaled the beginning of the harvest seasons and the coming of winter. The fruit grew in partial shades of the thicket and changed color from green to amber and, when ripe, to red. Sour squash was delicious when roasted, although the ripeness produced an even more flavorable heady sweetness. Otherwise raw sour squash, as its name indicated, had an unbearable sourness. Roasted sour squash was similar to roasted sweet cherry squash for both flavor, crispiness, juiciness, and equally sweet-scented.
Along with the beginning of the harvest, the festival was also the Spriton’s way of thanking Thra’s generosity for the bounty of their crops. This was reflected in the festival’s tradition: after gelfling roasted their sour squash they must share all of it with others and only then were they allowed to eat the ones given to them by others. It was generally considered bad luck to decline to share. Sharing roasted squash wasn’t limited to gelfling as it involved podlings and the animals that resided in the village.
Day of the Great Sun
This was a traditional summer festival that all gelfling celebrated with summer activities like carrying water, taking a day of rest and more. But for the Spriton, who referred to it as the Longest Day, observed the event differently with a tradition called “sun-filling”. On the days leading up to the Longest Day, the Spriton cut back the trees around their homes and removed the latching from their roofs. When the day came, the sunlight from the Greatest Sun filled their houses with its light as it made its long journey across the sky. The Spriton held the belief that the light the sun brought kept out dust and last until the next trine.
Another tradition was burning old or discarded items within Sami Thicket’s hearth whose fire raged on through the entire day. When homes were cleaned and the fire put out, the head of each household took a small handful of ash and sprinkled on the newly thatched roofs. It was a reminder of letting go but also respecting and honoring the old.
Spritons sung a traditional song called “Sun-Filling Song” while they de-dusted heavy quilts and mats.
Mysteries of the Mystic Valley
Although the Spritons lived near the Valley of the Mystics none knew about the existence of the urru. Yet, they knew that something lived there beyond the dried-up ravine as rumors sprung from sights of silhouettes and hearing chanting at night. Many had gone into the valley to find the source of the rumors but found nothing. This may be due to the mystic magic that cloaked their village from outsiders. Many songs were created to explain these seemingly mysterious phenomena. Some were more logical, that the valley was the new home of the Arathim, but some were more superstitious that the ravine was haunted by a long forgotten race.
Interestingly, plenty of songs focused on skekMal the Hunter who was known by many gelfling to be a myth. In many of these stories he was known as the Hunter. They explained that the Mystic Valley was his birthplace and in one particular song, called “Hunter’s Knife”, was also the resting place of his heart. In the song, it explained the origins of his bloodthirst as, believing his spirit was holding him back, he carved out his heart with a knife made from stone. He left it in the valley where, as rumors believed, was the source of the moaning heard at night. It was his disembodied spirit’s desperate calls to be reunited with his body.
Sami Thicket, Hometown of the Spriton
Nestled within a small wood in the middle of the Spriton plains lied Sami Thicket. The word sami meant “to rest” in old gelfling, which signified the village being a welcoming place of rest after a long day of work. Hundreds of families of both gelfling and podling lived within their clay and wooden houses, some multiple stories high. Some houses, like the ones outside of the village, were built with sturdy logs. Animals also lived within the village with winded creatures like Windshifters and Swoothu having built-in dens and nests throughout the wood. The village circled around the Pavillion.
The Pavillion was known as one of the hearts of Sami Thicket. It was located right in front of the Spriton maudra’s large round house. It radiated out from a stone hearth as its core with paved multi-colored stones of red, gray, and blue which were arranged in a mosaic, twisting, tree branch-like pattern. The hearth itself was ringed with stone ledges wide enough for several gelfling to stand on or for a whole band to play in the evening.
The community gathered around the Pavillion daily for performing tasks and where supper was served by hearth workers. It was also the meeting place for special occasions. During these times, fire workers created giant fires that towered over the village and beautifully lighting up the Pavillion.
Nenadi-Staba
Otherwise known as the Low Tree, this was the patron tree of the Spriton. It was considered the other heart of the Sami Thicket and was located within a bowl-like valley near a winding brook. The tree itself was a squat tree with bulging roots that had a gnarled, maze like-pattern with dangling smaller roots and vines. The Low Tree’s thin, reedy branches were ruffled with fragile hand-shaped golden leaves. It only took a short walk to get there which allowed the Spriton to visit it whenever they wanted. Younglings played on its labyrinthine roots while elders meditated under its shade. To pay homage to their Great Tree, the Spriton sang a song called “Ode to the Low Tree”.
Relationship With the Skeksis and Other Clans
The Spriton were among the most loyal of the skeksis. In fact, it was the Spriton who first agreed to form an alliance with them, kickstarting the Alliance of the Crystal. SkekVar, when he was known as the Ambassador, convinced Elder Carn of the gelfling council to form a compromise of exchanging weapons for the skeksis protection from the Makraks. After meeting with skekSo the Emperor did Elder Carn solidified the alliance with them. Since then, the Spriton remained loyal to the skeksis, where they provided them with tithes and banquets whenever they visited. Like most clans, some Spritons were sent to the Castle of the Crystal to become guards. In the book series, along with the Stonewood, they made the majority of the skeksis’ armies and guards at the Castle of the Crystal. However, their loyalty was eventually driven by fear as evident by Maudra Mera. In both the TV and book series, she remained stubborn about joining the resistance fearing the safety of her own clan. Eventually she decides to join the Spriton in the fight against the skeksis.
Spritons generally were respectful and kind to any visitors who visited Sami Thicket and neighboring villages. They valued keeping face and held the belief they had good trading relationships with other clans. They did have their fair share of rivalries, though. The most well known of these were with their woodland neighbors the Stonewood. Depending on the media, the severity of their rivalry varied. In the timeline established in Age of Resistance, it didn’t extend outside of name-calling and rumormongering. The book series, however, had the two clans constantly feuding over territory within the Endless Forest. Despite all of this, the Spriton shared the same folklore with them including the heroic Jarra-Jen and the villainous Hunter.
They were the only neighbors of the Drenchen which they had semi-regular contact with. On the surface, the two had a friendly neighboring relationship but looking past this lied a steadily growing tension. This hit a crescendo in the book series as, after Stonewood’s defeat and supposed annihilation, the Drenchen took up arms to fight the skeksis themselves. To get to the castle, they would have to go through the Spriton which were still loyal to the skeksis. Fueled by fear that they too would end up like Stonewood, the Spriton expected to fight the Drenchen. Thankfully, Naia and her friends were able to defuse the situation from becoming a civil war and managed to get the two clans to join the resistance.
Like other clans, the Spriton had their own stereotypes from outsiders. While the Spriton thought of themselves as humble and more productive of the seven clans, others found them overly obedient and old fashioned. At least in the book series timeline, the Spriton were believed to be territorial as well as aggressive and combative. Some outsiders referred Spritons as “grasslings”.
Notable Spriton Members
Kylan: A songteller who lived during the late Age of Division. He accompanied the Drenchen Naia who wanted to find Rian and exchange him for the freedom of her brother. He would then help the gelfling resistance by helping the other clans light the fires of resistance. Interestingly, Kylan is half Spriton from his mother side: his dad was from Stonewood.
Maudra Mera the Dream Stitcher: Maudra Mera was the Spriton Maudra during the late Age of Division. She loved the skeksis and much as she feared them and would do anything to keep her clan safe, even if it meant siding with the lords who were draining gelfling. She was shrewd and traditional.
Tolyn: A Spriton who served as a guard at the Castle of the Crystal. When an uprising was being formed after the gelfling learned the truth, Tolyn decided to tell the lords about this supposed traitorous behavior. It backfired on him completely as he was drained of his essence along with most of the castle guards.
Carn: Also known as Elder Carn or Maudra Carn. She lived during the late Age of Harmony and the early Age of Division. During the Makrak raids, she agreed to form an alliance with the skeksis for their protection, an alliance that would nearly last a thousand years.
Thall: Daughter of Carn. A lover of the forest she lived near by, she was the first gelfling to encounter urSu the Master. She, urSu, and Raunip found a way to help the Makraks find their way back underground and stopped their destructive raids.
Veara: A healer from a Spriton village. She tried helping Barfinnious and Hup with a beast that had been attacking her village, but was snatched by it instead. Veara was able to leave a trail of herbs to the cave where the beast lied in hopes the two could put a stop to it.
Vortina: A Spriton farmer from a village outside of Sami Thicket. Vortina tried to defend her farm when a beast attacked it but was hurt in the process. Her wounds were mended by the village's healer Veara.
Mimi: The daughter of Maudra Mera.
Lun: In Shadows of the Dark Crystal, he was seen helping roast cherry-squashes in preparation for the arrival of the skeksis lords. In Flames of the Dark Crystal, he became a scout for Maudra Mera to keep track of any Drenchen soldiers.
Phaedra: A Spriton who lived in Sami Thicket. She was the village’s sandal-stitcher.
Remi: A childling who lived in Sami Thicket. He was in charge of ringing the hour bell.
Gereni: Gereni was a scout who accompanied Lun to look out for Drenchen soldiers.

Monastic Tradition: Way of the Controlled Chaos
Monks who follow the Way of the Controlled Chaos strive to embrace the chaos in the universe. In a world of arcana, divinity, and monsters, they understand that nothing can be contained. However, by harnessing and adapting to the chaotic energy, these monks learn to utilize what they don't understand. Through magic observed and truths introspected, monks of the controlled chaos use their connection to the world around them as well as their internal energy to preserve harmony in their attacks.
Ki Surge
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you learn to use your ki to create small bursts of uncontrollable magic from within you. At the start of your turn, you can expend 1 ki point to roll on the Ki Surge Table. Roll your martial arts die and apply the effect corresponding to the number you roll. Some effects won't be able to be achieved until your martial arts die increases. Your save DC for these effects is equal to your Ki save DC. If you are using unarmed strikes, your fists are your weapon for any effect the table describes that includes a weapon.
Ki Surge Table (Below Cut)
Martial Arts die
Effect
1
Eye for an eye- Black mist swirls your monk weapon, siphoning energy off creatures it contacts until the end of your turn. You take 1d4 points of necrotic damage per attack you make (regardless of whether it hits) and can roll an extra martial arts die with each of your damage rolls. This damage is also necrotic.
2
Weeds and Clovers- Vines and flowers sprout up around you in a radius of 20 feet. This area becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute.
3
Three Legs at Night- Your size increases by 1 size category for until the end of your next turn on your first strike, the size of the creature you strike decreases by 1 size category (given it is not tiny). After the minute ends, you gain 1 point of exhaustion.
4
Improvised Solo- Your piercing kihaps become infused with a melodic tone. Up to ten other creatures of your choice within 60 feet of you that can hear you gain a d8 bardic inspiration die for 1 minute. After your attack, you lose your voice and can only whisper until you take a long rest or are healed by a lesser restoration or higher.
5
What the Flumph? A you summon a swarm of 4 pixies or 8 flumphs that are controlled by the DM. After 1 minute, the swarm disappears.
6
Master of Elements Elemental energy shoots out of your body. Four elements (water, earth, air, fire) swirl around you, forming a protective layer of energy until the end of your next turn. While this is up, you have resistance to bludgeoning, slashing, piercing, cold, thunder, and fire damage.
7
Winging it-You unfurl a pair of spectral wings and have a flying speed of 40 ft. until the end of your next turn.
8
Rapidly Expanding Universe- An astral double of your monk weapon appears that lasts until the end of your next turn. With this astral weapon, you have a melee range of 30 ft.
9
Seeing Double- An illusory duplicate of yourself appears in your space. For 1 minute, the duplicate moves with you and mimics your actions, shifting position so it’s impossible to track which image is real. You can use your action to dismiss the illusory duplicates.
Each time a creature targets you with an attack while the duplicate is up, roll a d20 to determine whether the attack instead targets one of your duplicate.
You must roll a 11 or higher to change the attack’s target to a duplicate.
A duplicate’s AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier. If an attack hits a duplicate, the duplicate is destroyed. A duplicate can be destroyed only by an attack that hits it. It ignores all other damage and effects.
A creature is unaffected by this spell if it can’t see, if it relies on senses other than sight, such as blindsight, or if it can perceive illusions as false, as with truesight.
10
Life in Death- Your monk weapon glows with radiant energy on one side, and darkens in necrotic energy on the other. These effects fade at the end of your turn. You can choose which side to attack with. If struck with the radiant side, a creature takes an extra 1d6 radiant damage and glows until the end of your next turn. While glowing, attacks against the creature have advantage. If struck with the necrotic side, the creature takes an extra 1d6 necrotic damage and must save on a constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of your next turn.
Ki Restoration
At 6th level, you gain the ability to convert ki energy into life force. As an action you can use No Aether's Ki Conversion. This allows you to expend ki points to gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your wisdom modifier (minimum 1) per ki point you use. You can use a number of ki points equal to your wisdom modifier (minimum 1) in this way per long rest. The temporary hit points last until you take a long rest.
Taming Chaos
Beginning at 11th level, you begin to gain control of your ki surges. Whenever you roll on the Ki Surge table, you can roll the die twice and choose which of the two effects to unleash. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can ignore the number and choose any effect on the table.
Additionally, after finding out the outcome of the ki surge, you can use your bonus action to expend double the amount of ki points to extend the duration of the effect by one increment. If the effect lasts one round, you can use an additional two ki points to make it last another, and four more to make it last three rounds.
Greater Greater Ki Surge
At 17th level, your ki surges maximize in power. You can spend 3 ki points to roll a d10 on the Greater Ki Surge Table at the start of your turn. You can do this once per long rest. If the effect requires a saving throw, your save DC for these effects is (8 + your proficiency bonus+ wis modifier). If you are using unarmed strikes, your fists are your weapon for any effect the table describes that includes a weapon.
Greater Ki Surge Table (below Cut)
d10
Effect
1
Make a wisdom saving throw against your own DC. If you fail, you polymorph into a baboon until the end of your next turn.
2
Your ki compresses the mass of the air around you. You manifest a well of gravitational energy in a circle with you at its center that has a radius of 30 ft. Each creature in the circle must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 8d8 force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. This effect ends at the end of your turn.
3
Your ki converts to thermal energy and begins to physically heat up your skin. For the next minute, any flammable object you touch that isn't being worn or carried by another creature bursts into flame.
4
A burst of energy from inside you disperses and settles into mist on the ground in a 100 ft radius around you. The terrain around you begins to warp into another of your choosing. The terrain's general shape remains the same. Open fields or a road could turn into a swamp, hill, crevasse, or some other difficult or impassable terrain. A pond can be made to seem like a grassy meadow, a precipice like a gentle slope, or a rock-strewn gully like a wide and smooth road.
Similarly, you can alter structures, or add them where none are present. This warping includes audible, visual, tactile, and olfactory elements, so it can turn clear ground into difficult terrain (or vice versa) or otherwise impede movement through the area. Any piece of the illusory terrain (such as a rock or stick) that is removed from the area disappears immediately.
5
You use your ki to harness the power of luck, and a glowing 15 ft radius circle appears with you at it’s center for 1 minute. The energy at the circumference of the circle swirls, pulling the strings of fate. The circle has a line through its center, but you decide at what angle. Divided by this diameter, every creature in one half of the circle gains advantage on attack rolls and saving throws, every creature in the other half has disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws for the duration of the effect. Creatures are unaware of this effect though they can see the circle. The circle moves with you and you can change the once per turn. You are unaffected by this luck displacement.
6
In fighting your opponent, you can sense the ki of your opponent, extract crucial information about your foe, granting you insight about their combat ability. Whenever you hit a creature with one of the attacks granted by your Flurry of Blows, you mark them as analyzed. In addition, you learn the following attributes about the target: Damage Vulnerabilities, Damage Resistances, Damage Immunities, and Condition Immunities.
7
Your next strike creates ripples through the ground and causes up to six pillars of stone to burst from places on the ground that you can see within range. Each pillar is a cylinder that has a diameter of 5 feet and a height of up to 30 feet. The ground where a pillar appears must be wide enough for its diameter, and you can target the ground under a creature if that creature is Medium or smaller and one MUST appear under you. Each pillar has AC 5 and 30 hit points. When reduced to 0 hit points, a pillar crumbles into rubble, which creates an area of difficult terrain with a 10-foot radius that lasts until the rubble is cleared. Each 5-foot-diameter portion of the area requires at least 1 minute to clear by hand.
If a pillar is created under a creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be lifted by the pillar. A creature can choose to fail the save.
If a pillar is prevented from reaching its full height because of a ceiling or other obstacle, a creature on the pillar takes 6d6 bludgeoning damage and is restrained, pinched between the pillar and the obstacle. The restrained creature can use an action to make a Strength or Dexterity check (the creature’s choice) against your save DC. On a success, the creature is no longer restrained and must either move off the pillar or fall off it.
8
Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see. For 1 minute, you can use your bonus action to teleport again this way. After the minute is up, no matter how far you are, as long as you are on the same plane of existence, you immediately return to the exact location you were when you teleported the first time.
9
Energy begins to compress and gather around you, creating crackling lighting.
The next time you hit a creature, a bolt of lightning arcs toward your target. Three bolts then leap from that target to as many as three other targets, each of which must be within 30 feet of the first target. A target can be a creature or an object and can be targeted by only one of the bolts.
A target must make a Dexterity saving throw. The target takes 10d8 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
10
A swirling, black and purple vortex gathers at the end of your weapon, sucking the life energy from the nearest source. The next time you hit an opponent, the target must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 14d6 necrotic damage, or half as much damage on a successful save. The damage can't reduce the target's hit points below 1. If the target fails the saving throw, its hit point maximum is reduced for 1 hour by an amount equal to the necrotic damage it took. You also gain temporary hit points equal to the amount the target’s maximum was reduced by. Any effect that removes a disease allows a creature's hit point maximum to return to normal before that time passes. This vortex disappears after the first strike that hits.

“Alliances Tempered.” The Book of Thursby: Scions of Numenor [SB]
*Intended originally to publish as one work under the FFXIV Write event. But I couldn’t get past the half-way mark before the deadline. So I trimmed the post to the epigraph. The full work is posted now as a non-entry. “Truth is a sacrament of lies, proffered by ministers of fear. It is an exercise in asserting control, not the betterment of the soul or wisdom. People seek truth to gain comfort and in doing so drive away fear from uncertainty. Control gives comfort of an insidious sort. Control breeds a craving to flee the fear of losing control which comes with it. Those who hold sway over one will seek many and ever greater comfort to sate this fear.”
~Loxonica Omber, “Observations through the Dark Crystal.”
A mechanical lift in Ul’Dah seemed almost out of place to Benjimir. It was one of many things that seemed utterly in contradiction to each other. An ancient citadel illuminated by flame and wick with lifts such as this. Airships hoisted aloft by bags of gas docked alongside others of high craft using forces of nature to defy gravity. Winged beasts of burdon toting people and goods hither and yon along roads traveled by flying mounts of metal and technocraft. No singular craft held sway over these lands. There was a seamless, unlikely harmony to all of it however.
From the Dapper Mainer these details were rendered unnoticeable by the height the dinning room held above the lower levels of the city. Brightly decorated with white painted alls and tapestries of airships, it evoked the theme of travel by the vessels which docked and departed from the port a few levels above it. Even as Benjimir and his brothers were taken to their table from the matre’d station a rotund airship, slung under great beige bags of Ceruleum infused gas descended across the view of the main bay of windows. The ship cast a shadow which for a moment left the room to the light of candles and lamps already lit about the tables and walls. For this moment the room shifted from the light orange hue of the setting sun to white. The trim from black to a rich green hue. Even the tapestries seemed to change as if they were created in matching palettes. As the ship continued on and unsheathed the sunsets light again the room resumed the richer color scheme.
“Brilliant.” Benjimir said as he took his seat.
Tinifalas looked about and smiled. “Unique in Ul’Dah, pity it is not open to all.” he said as he picked up the single panel menu.
“Whom has access? Benjimir asked.
“Select passengers aboard airships, officers of Grand Companies, select Free Companies and those with ties to airship industry and trade.” Bondermir said and looked about the room. As yet it was early for the dinner hour, no passengers vessels were docked, and their guests were only now debarking the large airship-of-the-line which they arrived aboard. As such the room was unoccupied as yet. Soft orchestral music played over a device near the kitchen door. “So you’ve both met our guest before, tell me something of what to expect.” Benjimir asked towards his brothers as the lift’s works stirred to life.
“The admiral is no diplomat but has a practical and even handed approach. She has a seafarers eloquence but speaks plainly as a rule.” Bondermir offered. Tinifalas agreed. “She and T’subaki are surely kindred spirits, if cut from different cloth.”
“Not much of Aubreen’s sort of cloth to cut from anymore.” Benjimir lamented. The lift’s works paused their action. Aubreen T’subaki was of the long lived races and the most trusted source of council to the House of Thursby since time out of memory. She had taught generations of Thursby’s and fleet officers over ages as the eldest authority on nautical traditions and warfare. She was Benjimir’s oldest friend and mentor “up well.” Her race bore time well, scarcely suggesting their age in appearance. Her sharp sloping ears suggested she was of the Elezan race native to Eorzea, though she was well shorter and femininely curved than any example to be found.
Aubreen had gone “down well” at Benjimir’s behest after the first reports from Tinifalas arrived five years earlier. Bondermir was sent to take on the role of master of spies and business, it became clear freedom of movement and commerce across Hydalen would require more than wagons. Her task was to lay roots for a merchant marine, along with protection for ships, crewing needs, and at sea, a means to guard against threats on it.
Maelstrom being as near to a formal authority at sea as could be found, had common interests with the Thursby Company. These were in restoring commerce, checking raiders at sea and shore, and an economy of scale of having common services made an effective partnership. Aubreen parlayed a single ship’s service into friendly relations and eventually alliance between Maelstrom and the Thursby Company. Much had been bore of that relationship.
Aubreen took brought with her a cadre of promising officers to her task. Now, most were commanding their own ships or stations. Training Maelstrom officers had itself become a means to furthering favors and relations with the Grand Company.
The previous years saw Aubreen lead Maelstrom and Thursby ships alike in combat and to victory. With victory came trust. Old tonnage bought and leased from the Grand Company, a concept new to them. Calamity wrecked ship yards were negotiated into the fold of the Thursby Company. Much of this was guided by Benjimir from afar. His name and seal near even as he was years from Ul'dah.
The lift’s works stirred again and soon stopped. The doors parted and out of it emerged a pair of crimson uniformed guards who took posts on either side the doors. Next came forth a tall, stately, fetching woman, with silver hair and porcelain hued skin. Her red epaulets displayed her rank insignia on a pitch black uniform jacket which bore a modest sum of chest and cleavage. Knee high polished leather boots and twin pistols left no question of her identity. Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn of Maelstrom.
From behind Bloefhiswyn emerged Aubreen, clad in a deep navy blue uniform jacket akin to the admirals. This, to Benjimir’s surprise, shared the display of cleavage new to any who knew her before coming to these shores. The jacket skirted higher on her legs however, exposing traditional white slacks tucked into matt black cavalier style boots. Her skin bore a traditional hue of flesh that did not reflect the suns hours on it. Her snow white hair made and few slight lines on her face gave the only hints of age.
“A most striking couple.” Benjimir thought aloud and unintentionally. Bondermir suppressed a grin. “Strikely surely, but not a couple. The commodore has taken up with another.” he said to Benjimir as Aubreen led the admiral across the room.
“Eh?” Benjimir said. Tinifalas tipped his head toward his brother and whispered. “Captain Vaunter.” Benjimir’s eyes flared and head turned involuntarily.
“No...really?” he said, extending the last syllabi, almost unable to contain his voice. He smiled and shook his head. “Wouldn’t have thought it, but these are new days we live in.” Aubreen had not taken a partner in anybody's lifetime and Katryn Vaunter was an unlikely pairing, especially being an officer under her and as Benjimir's protege. But these were not past days.
Aubreen and Bloefhiswyn stood before the Thursby brothers. As a flag officer here at Aubreen's invitation Benjimir greeted the admiral first and offered seats to them.
Orders place and drinks in hand it was Bloefhiswyn who opened the discussion. “Five years, much blood and gil, what brings you to shore now?” she asked.
“I row slow,” Benjimir replied prompting a smile from Bloehiswyn. “More an inspection tour I think it is best described as. I think it is becoming prudent council to take-up a presence in the flesh, guide our families works nearer than at sea.” He concluded.
Bloefhiswyn nodded slowly in acknowledgement and sipped the wine she ordered. “And of matters our mutual concern and the future? What comes next?” she asked.
Benjimir sat back in his chair and drank. “It is our way to ply our trade and seek the betterment of those whom we can aid. And the safe keep of our people and interests, that means having an eye on the future, preparing for dangers unseen. For now, we will see through to the completion our joint work” He explained to Bloefhiswyn. She absorbed it all.
“But what comes next and what dangers do you foresee? The sea lanes are soon to be secure, the fighting at large has abated for now. Do you have plans for the fleet you have assembled, men you are training?” Bloefhiswyn pressed.
“We’ve no ambitious to statehood or governance if that weighs on you mind. Not our way as I know the Commodore and master Exidines have made clear.” Benjimir remained relaxed in his chair, sipped his drink again. “There are answers important to me, to our people, which we must divine. As well as our mandate to stand against shadows where ever they show themselves. As it happens, they’ve shown themselves here. As to future dangers?” Benjimir started, unconsciously slipping his hand to the Dagger of Warding on his belt. “They’ll make themselves apparent in due course. I believe our victories aside they’ve not abated since before the fall of Dalamud and their greatest challenge has yet to present itself.”
Bloefhiswyn assumed a relaxed posture in her own chair, listening intently and nodding as Benjimir spoke. “You suggest we are only seeing the start of troubles then?” She said, lending forward. Benjimir nodded. “What course shall we set them mister Thursby?” She asked.
Benjimir sipped once more. “Prepare in what ways we can to oppose what we are able too. For now, you and I alike can only speculate what that might be.” With that all at the table drew themselves up as the meal arrived.
Aubreen looked on silently. Her gift of foresight was of no use to her on these shores. She could only sense an approaching destiny with no shape or hue and a need to make peace with it. In such times her thoughts turned to the young captain aboard the Andustar.

If you were to put together a deck of KH Tarot cards which characters would be which?
Ooh, this is fun. It’s like the characters in Persona.
Sora - The Fool
“The Wild card is a playing card that can represent any other card, or something that has an unexpected effect on a situation. It is like the number zero… empty, yet holding infinite potential within itself.”
The Fool represents new beginnings and carefree adventure. Though this card could indicate foolishness, it is more optimistic in the sense that it stands for pure actions and being free from the constraints of your present life. More than likely, there are important decisions coming your way. This Arcana is originally the only one that doesn’t have a number, thus it is considered as the Arcana number 0. The Fool Arcana tends to be the “jack of all trades”. Mythological figures of the Fool Arcana are often heroes, fools, or the protagonists of their own mythological stories.
Donald - The Magician
“Attaining one’s dream requires a stern will and unfailing determination.”The Magician is symbolic of action and power in your life. Its positive connotations illustrate someone who is a smooth talker and good at all aspects of communication. This card suggests using your strong will power to move forward and take action. A common trait shared between members of Magician Arcana is their strong vision and aspiration for the future, and fulfilling their inner potential.
Kairi/Naminé/Xion - The Priestess
“The silent voice within one’s heart whispers the most profound wisdom.”The High Priestess is a spiritually intuitive woman full of mystery, wisdom, and understanding. A journey of self-discovery goes hand-in-hand with the presence of this card in your spread. She stands for things yet to be discovered in your life. Individuals associated with the Priestess Arcana are usually quiet, reserved, hardworking and very intelligent. They are often modest and shy.
Aqua - The Empress
“Celebrate life’s grandeur…its brilliance…its magnificence…”
The Empress stands for all things motherly. A nurturing, loving problem solver, she indicates successful business ventures or other positive, productive opportunities to come. She suggests moving forward to fulfill your full potential. The Empress Arcana often belongs to women of authority or wise and motherly figures. Characters under this Arcana may also be cold-hearted in personality, but still present a high degree of care and concern towards others. And like queens, they are also very elegant in character.
Terra - The Emperor
“Only courage in the face of doubt can lead one to the answer…”
The Emperor, as the counterpart to the Empress, stands for all things fatherly. He is structure, order, and authority in your life. While moving forward in your endeavours, this card indicates that assertiveness and rationality will take you a long way. In tarot readings, the Emperor symbolizes the desire to control one’s surroundings, and its appearance could suggest that one is trying too hard to achieve this, possibly causing trouble for others; some elements in life are just not controllable. Characters of the Emperor Arcana are often male leaders or father figures (or both). Often times, the Emperor character is troubled by something very personal and doesn’t know how to deal with it.
Eraqus - The Hierophant
“It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guides oneself…”
The Hierophant is a symbol of education, authority, conservatism, obedience to rules and relationship with the divine. The definition of a “hierophant” is a person who interprets sacred mysteries or esoteric principles, and the term was originally used to name ancient Greek priests who did so. Characters of the Hierophant Arcana are often older than the protagonist, and are typically quite wise and logical. The most common connection between Hierophant characters, however, is their association (and obsession) with the past.
Elrena - The Lovers
“There is both joy and wonder in coming to understand another…”
The Lovers Arcana initially represented two paths life could lead to, and thus a symbol of standing at a crossroad and needing to make a decision. Today, however, it is portrayed more of a symbol of love and romantic relationships, although it can also be a symbol of finding agreement with an ordinary friend or even two conflicting elements within.
Goofy - The Chariot
“One of life’s greatest blessings is the freedom to pursue one’s goals.”The Chariot reveals some sort of journey. With a positive connotation, this journey will most likely be a progression of some sort. It could also be the final success you have been working for. Portrayed as a king leading a chariot made up of two differently colored horses. The Chariot Arcana is a symbol of victory, conquest, self-assertion, self-confidence, control, war and command. Characters who are of the Chariot Arcana are typically very driven individuals, who have a personal goal that they aim to achieve at any cost. Combat-wise, they also tend to focus on physical attacks rather than magic.
Even - Justice
“To find the one true path, one must seek guidance amidst uncertainty…”
The Justice card is all about karma, fairness, and balance in different affairs in your life. It does not suggest an outcome that is either for or against you, but accountability, dignity, and integrity are all liked to its presence. In tarot readings, it means that one will have face a trial of their justice. Commonly, characters of the Justice Arcana are concerned with matters of fairness, and otherwise are very stoic individuals.
Ienzo - The Hermit
“It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one’s own path…”
The Hermit is a card symbolic of seeking some sort of spiritual enlightenment. Solitary introspection and contemplation are also associated with the Hermit. Perhaps some soul-searching and reflection are required on your part. Similarly, Hermit Arcana characters share the commonality of placing themselves in situations that hide them from the public eye. Hermit individuals hide away from others or act in more supportive roles rather than putting themselves in the spotlight.
Luxord - Fortune
“Alongside time exists fate, the bearer of cruelty.”The Wheel of Fortune stands for fate, luck, changes, and a new direction in your life. While it also shows ups and downs, the overall feel of the card is a positive one indicating changes for the better and good fortune. Human characters of the Fortune Arcana are usually individuals who attempt to seize their own destiny in spite of fate and are typically involved with making important choices and decisions in response to what life throws at them.
Riku - Strength
“Only with strength can one endure suffering and torment.”
The Strength card shows a presence of self-assurance and confidently facing problems in your life. It suggests a person who enjoys power but has the capacity to exercise great self-control in all matters. Portrayed as a young woman holding up a terrifying beast, the Strength Arcana symbolizes an imagery beyond the Beast and Beauty, and is associated with the morality about the stronger power of self-control, gentleness, courage and virtue over brute force. A commonality between characters of the Strength Arcana is their strength of heart. Strength characters are not upset easily and typically portray the fortitude that the Strength card represents in readings.
Dilan - Lust
“Clearly distinguish between your ego and your intuitive self.”
The Hunger/Lust Arcana is not found in standard tarot decks. The Lust Arcana is the Thoth tarot equivalent of the Strength Arcana, numbered XI. Lust symbolizes the danger of losing control, of being consumed by power. The card also implies strength, but strength which comes through Dominance. It is not true power, but the pure bliss of abusing power.
Ansem - The Hanged Man
“In the face of disaster lies the opportunity for renewal.”The Hanged Man suggests some sort of metamorphosis through breaking patterns, letting go, or going through a period of transition. Although it could indicate having to give something up in order to gain a fresh perspective, it has neither positive or negative connotations. In Tarot readings, this card’s appearance can be seen as an advice to take the time necessary to reflect over one’s upcoming actions. Hanged Man characters are sometimes self-sacrificial, but are more often notable for being caught between two different extremes, parties or stages in life.
Lauriam - Death
“Free yourself from a past that no longer serves you well and proceed toward the future with all your heart.”The Death card shows some sort of dramatic change in order to have a new beginning. It is often associated with some sort of loss, failure, or destruction. While it is associated with foreboding and doom, the Death Arcana also symbolizes metamorphosis and deep change, regeneration and cycles. In the earliest Tarot decks, it was the only Arcana that didn’t have a name, but the depictions of an ominous skeleton bearing a scythe led people to call it Death.
Demyx - Temperance
“Find balance in your life and approach problems with a calm demeanor.”
The Temperance card suggests divine intervention, optimism, balance, and harmony. The positive overall presence of this card in your spread reveals high levels of self-confidence and control in your endeavors. Characters of the Temperance Arcana are often struggling to find a balance in their lives and in their hobbies.
Braig - The Devil
“Making the wisest of decisions requires one to escape from the desires of temptation.”
The Devil is about all things negative. Anger, violence, temptation, fear, and doubt are just some of the terrors associated with this card. It suggests feeling trapped perhaps in an unhealthy relationship, an addiction, or a lie. Portrayed as a hermaphrodite devil over two naked and chained figures, the negative aspect of the Devil Arcana represents the urge to do selfish, impulsive, violent things, and being a slave to ones’ own impulse and feelings. Human characters associated with the Devil Arcana are often “devilish” individuals; they can be greedy, proud, lustful, or otherwise of poor character. It is not uncommon for this type of character to have somewhat of an antisocial tendency, often not caring much for the needs or well-being of others.
Aeleus - The Tower
“See things as you want them to be in order to make them become that way. Knowing the worst is behind you can give strength.”
The Tower is all about unexpected events and changes coming up in your life. However, the changes are along the lines of something catastrophic, disastrous, and overall negative. The Tower Arcana is commonly associated to overly arrogant, prejudiced and authoritarian organization, which walk to their own ironic demise. Furthermore, it is also more generically used as an omen of doom and disaster. It can be seen as the worst card of the deck, as it rarely has a positive meaning. Human characters of the Tower Arcana can be arrogant, and typically find themselves in bad situations where they themselves have fallen from grace.
Roxas/Ventus - The Star
“The time of your renewal is approaching. You have chosen the right path to restore your mental and physical health. By being brave enough to choose the riskier roads, you will inspire those around you.”
The Star’s presence signifies a period of respite and renewal for you. This renewal may be spiritual, physical, or both. It is a light in the darkness, illuminating your future and your past. The Star is symbolic of hope, renewal, and beauty. It suggests a period of spiritual tranquility, happiness, and positive opportunities. The overall feeling of this card is optimistic and serene. Characters of the Star Arcana embody their arcana’s traits of hopefulness and joy.
Isa - The Moon
“The struggle to reach your potential may bring about many conflicts in your life, but the results will be beautiful.”
The Moon is an illusive and confusing card. It suggests the presence of risks, secrets, and some level of mental confusion. It is associated with creativity, inspiration, dreams, madness, illusions, fear, fantasy, the subconscious and trickery. In tarot readings, it can also represent being attuned subconsciously to the world around, gaining the ability to sense things without being told about them or without anyone else knowing. Characters who are of the Moon Arcana are often similarly psychically-attuned, but a more common trend is their projection of their own fears and faults onto others. They often tend to have trouble accepting themselves for who they are and, because of that fear, try to correspond to an ideal person. And like the Arcana, there is a hidden depth as to why they act in their behaviors.
Lea - The Sun
“Let your light shine. Be confident in the sacred power of your original nature.”
The Sun, being the opposition to the Moon, is a card full of life, joy, and energy. It reveals positive achievements, successful endeavors, and an overall manifestations of good fortune in your life. It symbolizes happiness, joy, energy, optimism, and accomplishment. Occasionally, it is also associated with one’s initial happiness. Persona of the Sun Arcana commonly excel in Light and Fire-based attacks. They are typically mythological figures directly related to the sun, light, or fire. Characters of the Sun Arcana almost always (ironically) find themselves in terrible situations, the situation belying the underlying optimism present in nearly all of them. Also, as the Sun Arcana portrays accomplishment, some of these characters have deep thoughts about the meaning of life and manage to find their answers.
Xehanort - Judgement
“The fruits of your decisions are coming and you will receive that which you deserve. The path at your feet and the direction it is leading you are clear. You will see your ultimate desire through to the end.”
The Judgement card is representative of some sort of change or transformation, likely one that has already occurred. It could mean the presence of a spiritual or professional calling and making decisions that will lead to your success. The Judgement Arcana, in tarot, is associated with realizing one’s calling, gaining a deep understanding of life and a feeling of acceptance and absolution.
In gameplay, the Judgement Arcana is commonly associated with a balance of Light and Darkness. Figures of the Judgement Arcana are usually related to Judgement Day myths or are gods tied directly to the judgement of humankind. Characters of the Judgement Arcana are well-aware, quite intelligent and view the world with infinite possibilities. Most powerful when combining their intuition with their smarts, their thought process is among the most vast and realistic.
Mickey - The World
“You must find your purpose to accomplish it. The same with dreams; you must first be aware of it to make it exist.”
The World card means satisfaction and success at a journey’s end. Fulfillment, rewards, certainty, and positive outcomes are all things directly associated with the presence of this card. It often appears as the final triumph arcana, creating miracles and aiding the protagonists. The World Arcana is a representation of the world’s totality, the symbol of fulfillment, wholeness and harmony. The World Arcana is commonly associated with Social Links, where its power is based upon the protagonist’s bonds with others.

Sparks Fly (3/?)
After the first night, things go smoother for you. Thor watches in fascination as you smooth over household issues he did not even know were issues. Things are more harmonious, the budgets are more balanced, and every day you take care of some headache for him that he had no idea how to solve. In the evenings as you ate dinner together, your head bent over an instrument, the god said a prayer to the Norns for their wisdom in bringing you to him.
The Avengers accept your presence and so do Thor’s people, mostly without question. Your skills are mostly useless in combat, but your kind heart and the joy that just being near you seem to bring to Thor earns you their affection. Rocket is especially taken with you, seeking you out in the afternoons as you sit with New Asgard’s children at your feet, spinning out a tale to entertain them. He often stood nearby, listening. He didn’t know what about you was so soothing; perhaps it was the way you never treated him like a pet or some dumb animal. When he spoke, you listened, fixing your golden eyes on him calmly. You accepted flowers from Groot. You were just… soothing. And somehow, you always knew when the tricky spot behind his right ear needed to be scratched. Thor watched you spinning out a tale and smiled to himself. The children were quiet, and the Avengers nearby were similarly enthralled. You held your audience in the palm of your delicate hand, and Thor realized at that moment that for him, this was his truest love match. You were what he had been meant to find on Midgard, of that he was sure.
You drew this installment of your tale to a close to the groans of the children and stood easily from your stool, smiling as one small girl brought you a violet. You picked her up, laughing and touched your forehead to hers tenderly, letting her put the flower behind your ear. Thor couldn’t see his face, but he was confident he was giving you what young Peter Parker had called heart eyes. He couldn’t wait to see you cuddling your own children. His children. He’d kept his physical distance from you aside from thoughtful touches and kissing your hands. He was afraid that if he started touching you, he would not be able to rein in his powers and desires. Thor had his guesses about the parts of your past you kept hidden, and he felt that patience was going to be necessary. There was something about the way you started when anyone touched you unexpectedly. The way you still flinched at raised voices or someone’s hand passing to close to your face. It broke his heart when he saw it.
You dressed to fade into the background in the mortal clothing that you had procured for yourself with Natasha and Carol. Baggy clothing, hoodies, and jeans converse sneakers. Sandals. Functional buns and braids in your hair. You seem to want to hide, and for now, Thor doesn’t push. He doesn’t insist on the dresses and blouses he’s dying to see your curves in. After years of standing out as a way to keep you isolated, you seem to want nothing more than to fit in. You can feel Thor’s eyes on you as you walk across the yard headed towards the stable to take a ride on Declan. It was nice being able to do whatever you wanted whenever you felt like it. Thor had asked that you took one of his friends with you when you went out so that they could protect you if anything were to happen. You assented to his request with no fuss. The creature called Rocket and your “Ladies in Waiting” was your favorite companions. They allowed you your silence. They let you be with no questions.
Carol and Natasha fall into step with you as you walk and you greet them with your usual quiet smile. This place is confusing but comfortable. Not quite home but lovely in its way. Your betrothed was a puzzle. You could feel his eyes on you, tracking you. You didn’t mind it, his watching you. His eyes were hungry but not… not the same way Madoc’s had been. You did not know how you felt. You liked it when he touched you; his warm, calloused hands were gentle and reassuring. You often thought about how he pulled you onto his lap and held you. You hadn’t expected to feel so safe with his arms around you and his fingers in your hair, massaging away your fear. His middle was soft. Comfortable to be cushioned against as he held you. He was just comfortable. That was the right word for it. His hands hadn’t strayed from your waist, and your hair and the deep rumble of his voice had almost lulled you to sleep like the distant thunder of a summer storm rolling in.
You desperately wanted him to hold you that way again, but how did one ask for such a thing? He’d been so careful. So polite with you that you felt almost as if he might have found you wanting. That thought made your stomach twist. You had no experience beyond fear and pain and discomfort. You were afraid he'd be disappointed. More importantly, you were fearful that if he ever found out... You winced unable to keep your thoughts to yourself entirely. Natasha laid a hand gently on your arm, "Y/N?" she asked softly, "You know you can talk to us, right?"Carol took your arm on your other side, "Thor is our friend, it's true;" Carol said, "But whatever you say to us doesn't need to go further than right here." You shake your head and smile, "It's nothing, really." you say. It sounded off even to your ears but something. This fear was too much to confide in anyone. Too intimate. You didn't know really why it all felt so wrong, but it did. Natasha and Carol trade looks over your head, and they let you keep your thoughts to yourself. They chatted around you, keeping up commentary on the others. They had their suspicions about what you were thinking about. They'd seen you in the quiet moments in your rooms lost in thought when you were just relaxed enough to let some emotion show on your face. They knew Thor was in love with you. So in love that there was next to nothing you could ever say or do to turn him from you. The King was wrapped around your slender fingers, and you'd done it without even trying. It had been sweet to watch his fumbling attempts at doting on you. Loki had been appalled, "Gods," he snorted, watching Thor blush when you shyly took his hand as you walked, "It's like he got fat and forgot how to seduce a woman. This is almost pathetic." Natasha had shaken her head, "He's not trying to seduce the Princess," she'd said, "If he tried that she'd run away from him." Steve nodded in agreement, "And whatever he's doing, she does not exactly hate it."
You wait for The ladies to get their horses saddled before swinging yourself astride Declan's broad back, patting his neck to tell him to go forward. "How do you stay up there without a saddle?" Carol asked, urging her horse on with difficulty. "The same way you stay astride with a saddle," you say chuckling. When she looked confused, you add, "With my thighs." Natasha laughs and tugs the end of your braid fondly making you realize how bawdy that sounded and you blush scarlet. "Though Declan wouldn't let me fall," you say, "He is a spirit of the forests where I was born. Of the forests, my family is tasked with protecting." You pat the Stag's neck. "I am the last of my house, and so he feels he must protect me to protect his forest." Natasha opens her mouth to ask a question, and you smile a little, "I am not my mother's only child. But I am her youngest child. The day Madoc's army came, I was at her feet. She was teaching me something... I do not recall what." The Stag snuffled and snorted, and you sigh. "When they breached the wall, She slung me across Declan's back and bid him run. And so he did. He tried to make it to the next court where I might be safely hidden, but it was not to be. So he stayed with me, doing what he could to keep me from any major harm."
Carol watches you for a long moment, your posture straight and your hands resting on your thighs as if you did not just tell them about an escape from certain death on the back of a magic deer and finally asked softly, "How many siblings did you have?" she asked. "Six. Haldora, Jamie, Callum, Alayne, Oak, and Rowan." Just speaking their names hurt after so long keeping them locked away. You look up, turning your face to the sun and take a deep breath, willing yourself to stay composed. There are no more questions after that. You ride along in silence, trying not to overthink about the day of the siege and the sounds of the screams. You stop suddenly when you hear a sound. It is a soft noise, barely noticeable above the forest sound. Declan kneels to allow you to slide off his back easily and waits, snuffling. You move through the brush silently and lift a very injured fox kit from the bush, cradling it in your arms murmuring soothing nonsense in a language that is decidedly not human. The creature should, by rights, be snarling and snapping in pain, but it is not. It nestles close to you, and you sit sideways on Declan's back, "Back the way we came, old friend." you say, light authority in your voice. The Stag obeys, and Carol and Nat follow. You hold the fox kit gently all the way home and carry it straight to the stable to begin to heal the poor creature.
In the stable, Carol and Nat leave you be going to have a drink and soothe the discomfort of knowing more concrete details about your past. Thor sees them without you and has a moment of panic. The girls laugh a little, "Your lady is safe," Carol said, "In fact, she's brought home a new pet." They tell Thor about the fox kit that you carried home in your arms and subsequently tease him about the way his face softened, and he had almost literal heart eyes. Thor blushes and excuses himself, going in search of you.
He watches you from the stable door, your musical voice bringing magic into being. When the kit was asleep in your arms, on her back and practically snoring tired from being hurt, he walks towards you, "New pet, sweetheart?" he said, a soft smile on his face. You look up at him, shy and blushing, "She needed help," you say, "I'm sorry. I should have asked you." Thor caressed your jaw softly and kissed your forehead, "You have such a loving heart," he murmured, "I could never be angry at that." He watches as your lips part in surprise, and you smile at him, and he aches in ways he hasn't since he was a boy first in love. He can't stop himself; he caresses your lower lip with his thumb and steps slightly closer to you. Several emotions flit across your face and then nothing. You stand wooden and panicked, pupils were blown wide and blood pounding. Thor stops. Just stops. Dropping his hand from you and moving back. "Sweetheart," he breathes, "I'm sorry. Please don't be afraid. Not of me." Thor sits down on a bench and holds out his arms to you, when you stumble forward he scoops you gently and kisses your hair. "Whatever they did to you was not your fault," he said. "It's not your fault, and I love you," he reassured. When the tears start falling, he only rocks you softly, his tears sliding down his cheeks into his beard. He doesn't know how long he holds you that way. But by the time your tears are spent, and you sleep, the stars are out. He carries you not to your bed but his, unwilling to let you go. He takes off your sandals but otherwise does not undress you before pulling you to his side your head on his chest and the fox kit curled on his soft, cuddly belly, tail over her nose.
Thor doesn’t sleep well that night, despite holding the plushness of your body the way he’s longed to since that first night. His thoughts are murderous. That man is going to pay for the thing he’s done. The things he let happen to you. He strokes your hair, rubbing the back of your neck to keep you soothed into a restful sleep, his deep voice rumbling stories to you. His exploits as a boy. Things about his mother. Anything to keep your monsters at bay, if only for a little while. Anything to keep you comfortable in his arms a little longer.

Harmonia, Octavo & The Silver Mage Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Here We Are In The Future!
Three months after Cadence returned to her own world, peace has been restored to Hyrule (more or less) and the Music Festival is fast approaching. So of course Harmonia, Octavo and his champions would be helping out in preparation for the festivities! But things take a turn for the weird and cuccos get involved.
‘Here we are in the future. Here we are in the future and it’s bright. Nothing to fear, no one to fight. I can’t believe we’ve come so far. Happily ever after, Here we are!’
Three months ago, a sorcerer of music named Octavo came to Hyrule. Upon learning of Hyrule’s fall at the hand of Ganon 25 years into the future, he took fate into his own hands. He bewitched the king of Hyrule and tried to steal the Triforce, splitting it into three in the process. He used the Triforce of Power, alongside the Threads of Power, Wisdom and Courage, to enchant his lute, turning it into a magical Golden Lute. With this power, he sealed Hyrule Castle, forced the people of Hyrule to follow a rhythm, summoned an army of monsters, and forced Princess of Hyrule, Zelda, and Hero of Hyrule, Link into a deep slumber. He also placed various Instruments deep within the dungeons of Hyrule to prepare Four Champions who could combat Ganon upon his arrival in the future. But when all seemed lost, two new lights shone in the darkness. Cadence, daughter of a famous treasure hunter, was summoned from another world by the Triforce. Alongside her arrived Dark Princess Harmonia, heiress to the throne of Symphonyxia and Octavo’s childhood friend and sweetheart, who had come searching for the sorcerer after being forbidden from seeing him again by her mother, Queen Soloria. The two banded together to awaken Zelda and Link, and with the help of a friendly Deku Scrub named Yves, the five heroes defeated Octavo and his champions before travelling to the future to defeat Ganon, ensuring peace and harmony for the kingdom. After returning Cadence to her world with the power of the now restored Triforce, Octavo, who had been defeated by Ganon prior, approached Link, Zelda and Harmonia. He apologised for his actions, now realising the error of his ways and how he could now see he could have never defeated Ganon alone and promised to make up for his deeds by aiding in the restoration of Hyrule back in the present. Zelda accepted Octavo’s apology and Harmonia offered to assist Octavo in repairing Hyrule. Peace was restored to the kingdom…but not for long. For when one story ends, another begins…
“Just a little higher, Wizzroboe!”
“*Toot-toot!*”
The sun was shining down on the kingdom of Hyrule. Bunting and banners among other decorations could be found in every corner of the land as the Music Festival quickly approached. Harmonia was being held in the air by Wizzroboe, one of Octavo’s champions, as she hung up bunting outside of Hyrule Castle, “Aaaaand…got it!” Wizzroboe floated back down to the ground and gently set the princess on the ground. “Thanks, buddy!” Harmonia gave Wizzroboe’s feathers a friendly ruffle. Wizzroboe let out a series of happy toots in response.
“ROAR!!! *TING, TING, TING, TING!!!*”
”LOOK OUT! I’M SORRY! GYAH! SLOW DOWN!!!”
Harmonia and Wizzroboe jumped in surprise as they saw a small mouse go scurrying by, followed by Octavo helplessly holding onto Gleeokenspiel as they went bounding after it. “Not again…” Harmonia sighed before letting out a whistle, getting Gleeokenspiel’s attention, as she summoned four rubber balls, “C’mere you four!”
Tail happily banging on the tiles of their back, Gleeokenspiel bounded towards Harmonia before skidding to a halt, causing Octavo to go flying off. Harmonia caught him with relative ease as Gleeokenspiel began playing with the rubber balls, “I always said I’d never let you down, Tavo.”
“Ha-ha.” Octavo rolled his eyes playfully as Harmonia set him down, “How come they always listen to you, but never me? I was the one who created them.”
“With the magic baton I made and gave you.” Harmonia added with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
“Touché.”
The two shared a laugh before Harmonia spoke up, “Anyway, I’m finished setting up the decorations here, so wanna take a break?”
“Yes please. I’ve had enough excitement for one day already.” Octavo sighed before turning to Gleeokenspiel, “No causing trouble you four. And keep your heads on! I don’t want to have to go all over Hyrule on a wild Gleeokenspiel chase.”
Gleeokenspiel let out a series of purrs and dings in response as they watched the two Symphonyxians head off.
———————————————————————
“Ah~ Much better!”
Harmonia sighed as she plopped herself down on a log in Hyrule Forest, Octavo following suit. “It’s almost odd being able to walk through here without having to worry about any monsters roaming about.” Octavo smiled, “I’m glad things turned out for the better.”
The two sat in comfortable silence for a moment before Harmonia piped up, “Huh…?”
“Is something the matter, Harmonia?”
“Do you hear something?”
“No…wait, yes. What is that?”
The two heard fast-paced footsteps coming their way. They turned around to see a figure running towards them. The figure had lavender skin, and dark purple and plum hair. They also wore purple and plum robes with matching shoes and black leggings. The figure came to a brief halt in front of the two musicians with an expression that screamed ‘I messed up! I messed up bad!!!’. Harmonia and Octavo could make out more details of the figure now. The figure was female and had bright sliver eyes with four-pointed-star-shaped pupils, a silver diamond shape on her forehead, pointed ears, and a silver scar over her left eye. She was quite out of breath, but managed to get out, “If anyone asks, we were doing anything EXCEPT angering vicious birds, ok? Ok! Now run!!!” and took off running again.
“What…?”
Before Octavo could finish his sentence, the two heard the sound of angry clucking from where the figure had come from. Harmonia and Octavo’s eyes went wide when they saw what she had been running from.
“CUCCOS!!!”
A flock of extremely agitated cuccos were flocking in their direction. Harmonia and Octavo took off running in the same direction as the mysterious figure before being suddenly pulled into a nearby cave. “Shh!” They heard the voice of the figure hush as the cuccos when flying past. A few moments after the cuccos went by and everything was silent again, the figure burst out laughing. “Hahahaha!!! Oh Goddesses, that was not the result I was expecting!” she laughed, “Note-to-self: Never ‘Mass-Multiply’ a cucco! It will not end well!” The figure turned to Octavo and Harmonia after recovering from her laughing fit, “Sorry you had to be dragged into that! I honestly thought that cucco would’ve liked having more buddies, but I guess I spooked ‘em. You guys aren’t hurt, are you?”
Octavo shook his head, “A little surprised, but not hurt.”
“Ah, good!” she sighed in relief. Harmonia squinted at the figure before her eyes went wide, “Are you…who I think you are?”
“Well, I’m not sure!” she grinned, “I know a bunch of spells, but I’m still working on mind-reading. But hey, I’ll give it a shot! You think…I’m the Silver Mage, right?”
Harmonia gasped in awe, “You are, aren’t you?! Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!”
“Am I missing something? Because I’m lost.” Octavo raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Allow me to introduce myself.” The figure smiled, doing a small curtsy,
“I am the Silver Mage of Gemonykai, Krystalite Ginmaho. But you can call me Krys.”

All Encompassing Jade
There are many crystals that I did not know existed until I began a deeper study into the world of crystal healing. However, jade was always something I gravitated towards since I was a little girl. I guess I always liked the mystery of it. The way unique lines were drawn on the surface, separating varying hues of green, shades that resembled the color of my eyes.
Little did I know then that this gemstone would be one I would rely on so heavily in future years.
How to Use Jade
The use of jade is vast as it offers many different abilities and powers. First of all, jade is a serene stone. It harnesses the wisdom that you gather when you spend time in solitude, longing to reach a tranquil plane to let your mind rest on for a while.
Jade is also a great stone to carry if you are in need of protection. The grounded nature of jade allows for those who carry it to be accompanied by harmony wherever they go, keeping them from instances that or people who would cause them grief.
For myself personally, this aspect of Jade is something I rely on heavily. When my Sagittarius rising begins to wield itself about, it’s important for me to be able to stabilize and bring myself back to a reality where my voice is not the only one speaking, and my thoughts are not an undeniable truth. It encourages me to act in a way that is not off-putting to others, and instead, invite them in to see all sides of who I am not, and not just the basic assumptions you would make from knowing me for just a few minutes.
Green Jade is often said to create the strongest sense of peace and harmony when it is used. This is because this gemstone is particularly good at banishing negative energy. Which is something we all need from time to time, right? Additionally, placing a piece of Jade on your bedside table or beneath your pillow while you sleep is thought to encourage the frequency of which someone will have prophetic dreams.
Jade and the Body
Jade is also tethered to the body’s filtration and elimination organs. If you are experiencing problems with your kidneys or adrenal glands, carrying jade with you may help to speed up your healing time or lessen the extent of your symptoms all together. Because this gemstone has the ability to remove toxins, rebind skeletal and cellular systems, and heal stitches it is also just a great every stone to carry with you if you are an active person who is prone to injury. Jade also can assist those who are attempting to get pregnant. Really! If you are struggling to conceive, carrying Jade on your person is said to enhance fertility! Sometimes it’s hard to believe that one stone could hold so much power.
Jade also is used in order to heal oneself in certain situations. As stated before, it’s most healing when used to combat illnesses that affect the kidneys heart, and stomach. But, my personal favorite healing aspect of Jade is that it can calm my anxiety relatively quickly. When I start to feel like my mind is working over time, a piece of Jade is the first thing I reach for.
Attracting with Jade
Jade can be used to attract many different things in life. One of the ways it is commonly used is to attract a successful love. Additionally, Jade can be incorporated into spells or used in daily life in order to attract abundance, especially where money is concerned. So at the very least, may as well carry it on you to attract whatever it is you are currently in the process of manifesting!

Why Persona 5/Royal means so much to me and how I view my bonds (ADDENDUM: SPOILERS WILL BE INCLUDED - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED)

As I am writing this, I am 7 years past from conventional Australian high school life and just about a year past from graduating from university life. With adult life, it is tough to create time for yourself, let alone for your friends. Each and every one of us have different priorities: work, further studies, family, kids, bills to pay, etc. In addition, an actual health crisis in COVID-19 on top of the already giant wave of cynicism that we’re facing about the world from years prior makes the future seem pretty bleak. Wearing masks, following proper hygiene and especially social distancing is consistent globally (or at least should be while we’re still dealing with COVID-19). Sure, we can use technology as a way to connect, and it undeniably helps in maintaining our bonds, but it is not the same as actually being in person and spending time with them. With the epidemic putting a worldwide stranglehold on everyone, along with the stresses of growing up, creating and maintaining our bonds became a lot more difficult. So random question: What do you think of when someone brings up Persona 5 (P5) or Persona 5 Royal (P5R)? A masterclass of dynamic visuals and flair that is distinctive and aesthetically and thematically fitting our striking and rebellious protagonists in the Phantom Thieves? Top tier soundtrack? A fantastic turn based RPG system based on combos, follow-ups and support? Or maybe the personas themselves being the manifestations of the inner self and reflecting one’s inner strife and turmoil like dealing with death and grief (P3), or handling and understanding our true self (P4) or rebelling against corruption as we mature in an unjust world (P5)? All legitimate answers. Just a small addendum: P5R is an enhanced version of vanilla P5 that adds more personas, tweaks the combat and level up system to make it more seamless but compensates it with more intelligent A.I. and especially added story content (we’ll especially get to this part later). Yet, when I think about this game, I think about the social simulator aspect that works in tandem and beautifully complements the RPG gameplay where we explore the supernatural world of that particular Persona game. In both games, it acts as a way to worldbuild the busy streets and areas in and near Shibuya. You’ll encounter many different key support characters, within and outside the main cast of your group, the Phantom Thieves of Heart. By getting to know these characters and ranking up each confidant (maximum rank is 10 for each), you will be able to access a whole plethora of special abilities such as: learning new methods to down opponents instantaneously, access to personas only available by maximising each confidant’s rank, access to immensely helpful combat and support items and methods and especially the transforming your team member’s initial Personas into stronger forms. From a narrative perspective, you will get to know each character better, as they vent and confide their hopes, dreams, fears and desires whilst each of their stories fit with the major themes of maturation, finding your own road, rebellion and corruption. Yet, you can’t just immediately get to know all of them at once. In game, you’re just a transfer high school student. While you have free time, similar to real life, you have to make a choice on how to use it. Should you spend time getting to know a person? Or maybe level up one of your social stats like knowledge or kindness? Or working a casual job to get money? Maybe tackle one of those side missions? There’s no “correct” choice on how you spend your time. Heck, it is even more interesting that these are all optional. It is up to you whether or not you get to learn these characters and get to know them. Some are completely missable if you don’t explore hard enough. Essentially, on one side, you’re just a normal high student that unfortunately was dealt a terrible hand and on the other, you’re the leader of the Phantom Thieves. Codename: Joker. Since P3, the social link/confidant system I just described uses a very interesting motif: the tarot card system. As the protagonist of your story, you are the Wild Card - Arcana Number 0: The Fool. In order to attain a form of enlightenment at journey’s end, also referred to as the World Arcana, you will encounter many other Arcana before reaching said end. Each significant social link/confidant you meet in-game, regardless if they become a party member or NPC, are each represented by one part of the Arcana series. This is due to symbolsing on what kind of individual and personality they have but also what challenges they need help overcoming and what they represent to the in-game protagonist of each game. Mind you, it has been stressed that any character that fits any of the arcana cannot be those who will only be friends or acquaintances within a superficial nature. It has to be a close, trusting friendship that grows with effort and time. Here are some examples. Those who represent the Emperor are often male characters who try to control their own surroundings but are troubled by something(s) very personal and don’t know how to deal with it. Characters that fit the Temperance are those who struggle to find the harmony and balance that they desire. And those who suit the Hermit arcana tend to the smartest people that you will meet but tend to be introverts or those who desire more supportive roles. We’ve definitely met people within our lives that fit the criteria of the noted examples. Yet, by meeting these types of interesting people within our lives, through that time and effort, both sides can attain a form of wisdom and learn from each other. I’ll use an in-game example: Toranosuke Yoshida. To Joker, this confidant is represented by the Sun Arcana. Anyone from this group tends to be people who are on the surface have a sense of confidence, hope and optimism but ironically find themselves in terrible situations that constantly hurts their self-esteem, self worth and constantly questions their own purpose in life. For this game, he is an optional social link that can only be unlocked after taking on two shifts within the Beef Bowl job at Shibuya’s Central Street. He is an eldery gentleman and a politician who hopes to make amends for his terrible and corrupt mistakes of the past but also to make a positive change in a stagnant Japanese political system. He is seen making an earnest effort in giving speeches in front of a crowd near a subway’s gateway. Although demonstrating impressive speech-giving skills, as soon as a critical voice in the crowd shouts out “No-Good Tora”, his past regrets and lack of self-esteem shows and loses the crowd’s attention as he cracks under negative pressure. By meeting him, he found a youth who is willing to believe in his message, support him in his live speeches and also a hope of a younger generation that is willing to make a change. While the MC found a redeemed adult, after dealing with corrupt adults, and who is willing to learn about his diplomatic and speech-giving skills. As you rank up his confidant, you get to learn to negotiate with downed enemies for more money, rarer items and to possibly join your team, alongside unlocking the fusion recipe for the strongest Persona you can obtain from this Arcana: Asura. In the narrative sense, he starts to gain his confidence and learn on dealing with voices that are critical or even adverse to his live speeches and even flip the momentum back into his favour, while still being respectful and charismatic. In the conclusion of his confidant link (Rank 10), after several distinct story content relegated to his arc (which I won’t spoil), Yoshida gives a heartfelt speech in front of a larger, excited, more supportive crowd than from the past. Not about the current government. Not about his desire to be a part of the Diet Building. But about how he met this young man, although with different methodologies, is trying to reform the world. Yoshida admits that it seems like a tough mountain to cross. His anecdote gives an impression to the audience that this young man reinspired him to go for his aspirations and reminds them to go for it as well. Even though they can’t share the same path, Yoshida confidently states that they “will surely meet at the peak”. He admits from a previous speech that his efforts may not be heeded now but will hopefully be a stepping stone for future generations. Before that final speech, in private, he deduced that you were a member of the Phantom Thieves but won’t meddle in your affairs. If anything, he respects their tenacity and vision. It’s not even the most emotional nor most dramatically interesting confidant or story. Yet, it left me with an amazing impression that through weird, random scenarios and situations, you can meet people who are worth meeting and understanding. In greater reflection, although I am blessed to have both quality and quantity in terms of my major friends, if I were to apply this motif in how I view my bonds, I could say that each of their personalities and stories can represent each part of the arcana, with definitie overlap in notable places. With just some examples, with the people I’ve met, I’ve learned to be a bit more confident in my skills, embrace my tastes and hobbies and understand from their faults and failures as they have from learning from my own errors and mistakes. You could say that in my journey through life, to evolve from the Fool and learn some knowledge of the World, I encountered and befriended many people from many different backgrounds, cultures, tastes, personalities and worldviews and appreciated every single one of them. I hope that maybe by spending their time with me, they gained some sort of food-for-thought advice that may help them moving forward in conjunction with knowing they have a friend in me.
Then there is the ending of P5R’s 3rd semester. Exclusive to P5R, it can only be unlocked after meeting certain criteria. What I loved about this arc would be that it was largely teased and set up from previous moments in the game. Without spoiling the meat of the story of this arc, it added an intriguing layer of nuance and depth to the aforementioned themes surrounding the game and also added one more thought-provoking theme to the mix: stagnation. Before continuing, I think it is best to first address vanilla P5’s ending. Joker and the rest of the main cast finally helped stop a potentially world-ending crisis and retire from being Phantom Thieves. With the MC moving back home, instead of just saying one final goodbye, the group of friends offered to drive him back. On a near empty highway, the clear skies and the open breeze. The future doesn’t belong to anyone but ourselves and we can see how bright it is, together. Now let’s go to P5R’s two major endings. Yes, you heard me right. The final antagonist essentially created a world where the deepest wishes that a character has is granted and the greatest regret and/or wrong is corrected. For example: Haru has the close relationship with her father she always wanted...even though he died during the main story via previous events. Morgana finally got to be a human...even though it spits on his previous acceptance on what he actually is and his true role to the main cast. Essentially, everything seems so perfect yet everything feels so wrong. Before the final confrontation/boss battle, the final antagonist offers one final choice to the MC. Will you allow them to take over the world and allow yourself to live in their version of “paradise”? Or will you reject it, willing to go on and continue onwards and forge the path that you desire, even with problems persisting throughout? Let’s say you choose the former option, what happens? In summary, whilst on the surface seems like a joyous ending, is actually quite haunting on closer analysis. While the crew can still stay together, the MC doesn’t need to leave Shibuya, Akechi is alive and Kasumi is happy, it still seems off. Yes, the main cast gets their wishes but it also ignores the challenges and tribulations each member went through that built their inner strength and ideals. There's a group shot at the end at LeBlanc’s with everyone in frame. Everything feels right but the MC and Akechi are looking at you: the player. In this arc, they were the ones who, plotwise, were against the entire idea of submitting their future, morals and ideals for an easy way out. You gave up. Notice it says “END” at the bottom right? You chose a stagnant future. Nothing goes wrong but nothing progresses. A beautiful lie. There’s nothing beyond this. But what happens when you choose the latter option to reject? Post final battle, it is not only the final disbandment of the Phantom Thieves but also a parting of ways for the main cast. Ryuji is moving away in order to return back to the track team and have rehabilitation for his injured knee. Ann is planning to do some studying abroad for her future career. Yusuke has greater inspiration and motivation to return to painting. Makoto and Haru are planning to move away as well for their own higher education and individual career aspirations. Futaba finally breaks out of her shell and plans to enter high school and research cognitive psience in college. In his rejection of a false paradise, Akechi is finally able to rest in peace. Sumire, with a renewed heart, will no longer linger behind in her late sister’s accomplishments but achieve her own feats and achieve her and her own sister’s connected dreams. And finally, Joker will return to his hometown, with Morgana joining him. Instead of one final car ride together, Joker and Morgana, after saying their final goodbyes, take the bullet train home. To say that it is bittersweet and left me in shambles is an understatement. But yet, it is the perfect ending and an interesting twist to the original P5’s ending. It redefined the major theme of freedom. P5R took a bold approach in saying that we each have our unique path in life and must walk it, even if it may be “alone”. However, with the bonds that we’ve beautifully weaved, those that are true will always return to each other one day. In P5R’s true ending, it closes with “FIN”. Although it is finishing this story, there will be another tale right around the corner for us. It further re-emphasised and reminded me of my current viewpoint and situations with all of my friends as someone removed from both high school and university life and made their way into the real world. As I’ve explained before, it is nowhere near as easy as it once was. We are all no longer connected by a mutual place where we can easily just hang out and create random memories, where creating time is not a worry. That each of my closest friends, even with similar interests or dreams, have their own distinct aspirations and futures. Hell, I’ve made a lot of great friends but because of a number of reasons, I just felt time made us further distant from each other and making those fun times feel like several lifetimes ago. It feels disheartening and cruel but those who matter will find a way back or remain in contact. I want to share a small anecdote. I just randomly messaged one of my old childhood, primary school friends to see how they are going with life. What was supposed to be just a quick checkup between two old friends ended up being an impromptu, primary school reunion of up to 7 people (including myself). Mind you, I haven’t seen some of them in person for 5+ years. And yet, it is one of my favourite memories as of yet. We’re all walking different paths but felt amazing to see how each of them are going with their own personal journey and their growth. Just with this group, I have no clue when we’ll have something similar to this again but even if time may separate us for years, we’ll find a way back to hang out once more.
Another thing that this game helped reminded and re-emphasised me of, would be how important YOU play a part in your friend’s lives as they have to you. It sounds narcissistic but let me explain. In the game, at the very last day, you will say your final farewells to your teammates and all others who played a part within your journey. If you max ranked the confidants outside of the main cast, you definitely feel the greater impact and appreciation of your effort. Kawakami is no longer bound to a double life and has her passion to teach again. Iwai doesn’t need to hide his Yakuza past nor how he brought in his adopted son and finally has a new chance to be the father he always wanted to be. Yoshida finally has the confidence to not only acknowledge and learn from his corrupt political past but also has the greater confidence to move forward and stand for the younger generation who aspire for a bright future. These are just some of the examples of your effort bearing fruit. I will admit to doubting that my efforts are really helpful at all. I think for the most part, at best, I’ll just contribute a minor part to their happiness and/or growth. Yet, similar to the game, you will meet people that are legitimately grateful for your presence, time, effort and love. It is still crazy to me when someone affirms me and is grateful for my efforts when I spend time with them. That especially goes both ways as I feel immensely happy that there are those who are willing to take a risk and make time for some random idiot like myself and get to know me and who I am. Mind you, my love languages are Words of Affirmation and Quality Time. Regardless of whatever you believe in, may it be God, the universe or coincidence or dumb luck, it genuinely warms my heart and soul and eases my mind to know that effort to make time is worthwhile and to be acknowledged for my efforts; as if I met these people, and maybe even more, at the right place and at the right stage of my life. Regardless of when you met a close friend, do not underestimate your impact (something I still need to learn myself). You never know if what you do for them may be one of the things they need to see and hear.
Friendships and bonds are important. It sounds so overly played that the moral goes beyond a cliche’ and became a meme. Yet, both iterations of Persona 5 was a game I needed for my post education life - entering the real/full time working world. In an era where the world seems so divided and that time has separated each of us to our unique paths and made each other so distant, P5 and P5R allowed me to reflect on how I viewed my own bonds with closest friends in a new era of my life. It made me appreciate my current bonds on a whole new level. I don’t know who needs to read this right now, but thank you for being there. Even if I just met you just the other day or we’ve been friends for many years, please know that I appreciate you for who you are and what you mean to me. Thank you for giving some part of your time to make mine feel just a bit more timeless. I hope, even in our twilight years, that we continue to make many memories and grow within our bonds. To those who I’ve failed, I apologise. I have no idea if we can reconnect and make it the way things as they were before or allow time to walk our own paths but I hope you will find the happiness you deserve. If we do reconnect, I’ll do my best to keep improving as a person and as a friend. Just know that you are not worthless and you’ll always have people that do desire to be with you. Even with more grim scenarios, I know you’ll meet people who WILL be there for you. It’s tough to execute in practice as we go forward but not impossible to make the time and effort. I want to end this blog with a quote from Ann to the player as the MC prepares to say goodbye to all his closest friends and confidants (via the new true ending from P5R): “I’ve gotta reach people. I wanna give someone hope - like you did for me. Thank you for all you’ve done. The days I spent with you were some of the brightest in my life. Once I’m a star, I’m gonna shine even brighter, though - so watch out for me!”
Addendum: Sorry for being so late on this post. A lot of stuff was happening on my end and I wanted to make sure whenever I write a blog post, I write with the right mindset as I want to make it as genuine as possible and speak from the heart. I hope you enjoyed reading through this one. Next to Super Mario Galaxy, Persona 5 (more so the Royal version) is one of my favourite games of all time (currently my 2nd at the time I’m writing this). I definitely wanted to discuss its impact on me, similar to Galaxy. Hope you guys are doing well and will look forward to my next discussion topics that lie ahead.
