Shein Summer Haul 2020

Shein is one of my favorite sites to shop on. Yes, I know they have some controversy but what clothing brand doesn’t. I much rather shop online then go into a Brandy Melville store and get judged. Plus the price, you can’t beat it! The styles are always up to date too. Why pay $40 at Brandy Melville when you can get the same style shirt for way cheaper on Shein?! This order I splurged. Which isn’t hard when the deals are so good. I got clothes and misc items for our new apartment. Let’s see what all I got.

I’m saying it right now I have dancer’s feet. If you don’t know what that means let me explain, image turning so much that you get blisters on the ball of your foot, the floor dries out your heels and toe pads, and floor burns all over your feet from pointe shoes and floor work. My feet need all the attention they can get to look there best outside of the dance studio. I so far am in love with the bristles and the buffer at the end of it. There were no color options when I ordered, so they sent a random color. Blue would have not been my first choice but oh well, I’m still gonna use it.

I don’t think the quinoa is doing me any favors.

I remember when I started really looking at anti inflammatory diets and I decided to cut the yogurt out of my diet just to see what happened, even though I seemed to be doing well with it.

And instead I opted to add quinoa to my diet, with cilantro and celery and lime.  I like it.  But it did make me bloated, and it wasn’t going away.

I really need to get an allergy test to see what food I’m actually allergic to.

I am going to try to hit the smoothies harder than I was.  I kept making them and giving them to other people.  Or waiting to make one when I wanted one, for when I knew someone else would want to share with me.

But they’re not sick. I need to be taking care of myself, and making sure I have green smoothies, for my health.  And if they have to eat something else or make their own smoothies, or wait 20 minutes, then they’ll just have to live with that.  I’m trying to manage a chronic illness here and my food options are severely limited compared to theirs.

So I need to tell myself it’s ok, and just do it.

Currently I’m having a bowl of nuts and seeds with some honey and almond milk for breakfast.

I’m starting to hear shit about almond milk, but I’m not even looking into it, and I don’t care if people make fun of me.  I’m not trying to be trendy or clever or think I’m too good for cow’s milk.

I stopped drinking cow’s milk back when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 12 years ago, because it has casein in it and that’s bad for your thyroid.  I’m currently using the almond milk because it’s anti-inflammatory, and recommended for my psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis.  And I can’t use the oat milk like they suggested in the article against almond milk, because I can’t eat oats, it inhibits iron absorption, and I’m anemic. For a long time I tried to make oatmeal work, because everyone says its so good for you, but every time I ate it, it made me feel like a slug in pain, and super tired and weak, and I’d fall asleep for the rest of the day, angry at the world.

I can’t do oats.

So the nut seed bowl contains: chia seeds, unsweetened coconut, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, cocoa nibs from my sister, a little cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and about a tablespoon of honey, and mixed up with almond milk.

The smoothies are primarily spinach and chard and other leafy greens that fill up the blender, ground golden flax seeds, stevia, almond milk, and frozen cherries, or frozen strawberries and blueberries.

I’m also having sweet potatoes with stevia, and sometimes some salmon cooked in tinfoil with olive oil and lemon.

I’m still not having yogurt, and I’m going to cut out the quinoa too.  I didn’t eat the quinoa yesterday and my stomach feels noticeably better this morning.

I watched some videos of people with psoriatic arthritis, and one swore the solution was to eat nothing but meat. I don’t believe it. Another one said the solution was to cut out all cooked grains.  All of them.  And just eat everything raw.

I wasn’t ready to give up on the quinoa when I saw that, but I think now I am.  I realized I was craving it, in the same way that I might crave pizza or other things I already know are not good for me.  So that might be a sign. But I’m still cooking the sweet potato, and the salmon.

I also bought another book about this, but it’s basically just telling me all the same foods I’m already eating, just arranged in different ways, and they included quinoa.

Another video I watched, or two different videos, were women explaining you just need to have the green smoothies.  All the time, every day.

I dunno if that’s sustainable.

It makes me angry and frustrated.  Why can’t I just eat what normal people eat?

Not all cannabis are the same, in fact you can differ them from their leaves. Sativa leaves of sativa are loger and slimmer than Indica and Ruderalis.It can grow until 13 fingers and has a lighter and lime green shade. Methods used  in taking Marijuana to your body are smoking, bongs, vaping, dabbing, oral ingestions, sprays, tinctures and topical methods.

Based on my personal research, Cannabis is a popular recreational drug in the world, only behind alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco.

·                 The psychoactive effects are biphasic: a primary psychoactive effect that includes relaxation and euphoria from its main psychoactive substance, THC. Secondary psychoactive effects include introspection and metacognition. Tertiary effects like increased heart rate and hunger is attributed to 11-hydroxy-THC, a psychoactive metabolite of THC produced in the liver.

·                 Cannabis sativa cause a "high" commonly associated with hunger (munchies) and energetic feeling while C. indica produces a more "stoned" and meditative feeling, attributed to a higher CBD to THC ratio.

That’s why I stated a while a go that not all cannabis are the same, sativa makes us high, indica makes us stones, and Ruderalis for medical purposes.

How to make a Medieval English Scabbard Using Period Techniques and Tools

“Vegetable tanned leather survives in anaerobic archaeological conditions, which usually translates to waterlogged sites. The London waterfront is a prime example: at various times in Londons history, portions of the Thames were reclaimed for use, usually by building a retaining wall and then filling in the space with trash and dirt. This became waterlogged, stopping most bacteria, and preserving the items within. When more land was needed, another wall was built, with more dirt and rubbish as fill-in. These building projects are very accurately dated, both by dendrochronology of the wood used for the wall, as well as building records and datable items such as coins. This means that items deposited in these sites can be dated to specific time frames. Leather shoes, scabbards, belts, and pouches have been found in these sites.”

“The skin is first soaked in lime and water to loosen the hair, which is then scraped off. Then the skin is fleshed (to remove any meat left on from the skinning process.) This process can take up to 18 months to complete, depending on the type and thickness of leather and the tanning solutions involved. 

Vegetable tanned examples from Neolithic times (8,000 - 10,000 years ago) have been found. This process was possibly discovered as a result of accidentally immersing skins in pools with a high tannin content, or by trying to color the leather with vegetable matter. (DLT 294) This leather is the type commonly used in scabbards, belts, saddles, and shoe soles.

Tawing is a period method of creating leather through soaking the skin in an alum/salt solution. This method isn't as permanent as tanning, but it creates softer, more flexible leather. This method was known in Egypt c. 4000 BCE (DLT 294) 'Cordovan' or 'cordwain' were a special type of alum tawed leather that made Cordoba, Spain famous in the eighth century. This type of leather was made from goats, and was used in shoe uppers for centuries afterwards.

A third method is oil tanning, which combines tawing or tanning with special oils to create water- resistant leather. [...]

After the chemical process was complete, the leather was skived (thinned) to the required thickness. This was done with large knives and skilled workers. Modern leather is skived by machines. Leather is measured in 'ounces'. One-ounce (1 oz.) leather is 1/64th of an inch thick. The skiving is not completely uniform, however. [...]

After skiving, the leather is curried - smoothed, stretched, and conditioned. This process kept the leather flexible and the fiber structure from breaking. Dubbing, a mixture of tallow and oil (neatsfoot, cod-liver, or sperm whale oil, for example) was used as the final conditioning agent before sale. [...]”

Bright Homes In Three Styles: Pop Art, Scandinavian, And Modern

Using natural dyes is an everyday ritual in the Zapotec town of Teotitlan Del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. Famed for its hand-woven sheep’s wool rugs using pre-hispanic designs inspired by traditional Aztec motifs, the population here make their living from selling their colourful home interiors, and giving lectures and workshops on weaving and how to harvest colour from nature. Just 25km outside of Oaxaca city, tourists and textiles enthusiasts alike visit the artisanal community daily to learn the ancient wisdom that can protect our planet from dangerous toxic commercial dyes which renowned for poisoning water and soil ecosystems.

Two local ladies sit outside artisan market where you can buy naturally dyed rugs and accessories directly from the Zapotec weavers.

What are Natural Dyes?

Natural dyes are colourants derived from natural materials such as plants, animal, or minerals. The most common natural dyes used by artisans today are vegetable dyes from plant sources such as leaves, roots, berries, bark, wood, nuts, vegetable and fruit skins, and juices. Animal dyes which are more seldom used due to ethical reasons and expense are cochineal (used in Teotitlan), Purpura Pansa (which is a sea snail used on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico), Octopus ink and urine. Mineral dyes such as malachite, azurite, cinnabar and orpiment are excavated out of the ground.

The glasses on the table show how Cochineal outcomes vary depending on what you mix it with, adding lemon turns the rich red colour orange, whilst adding firewood ash turns it purple.

Natural Dyes used in Teotitlan Del Valle

Every year as part of our annual Mexico: Frida, Fashions, Fabrics and Fiesta’s tour (click here to learn more) Haute Culture visits the women at Vida Nueva to participate in weaving and natural dye workshops. Here are some of the dyes we have learnt about on our recent visit.

Cochineal

An intense red dye derived from insects that live on native cactus plants.

Cochineal is a insect that lives and breeds on cactus.

The cochineal are collected and left to dry for three months before grinding into a powder.

Cochineal can make a variety of colours including pink, red, orange and purple, depending on what it is mixed with.

Indigo

A leaf which once left in water to soak, mixed with lime powder and oxidized will make tones of blue to black.

Indigo plants grow in Oaxaca State near the coast.

Natural indigo is processed into a sold dry pigment

The dye is ground up into a powder

Once indigo is added to water you can achieve a variety of blue to black tones.

Almond Nuts

The outer green shell of the almond is used to extract natural dye. It is ground into a powder oxidise with mixed with three different options iron, sulfate & copper or sulfate & potassium dichromate. Variations in the uses of these three combinations result in a range of shadesin browns and yellows.

Plant Roots

Dried brazilwood will produce a beautiful deep orange after covering wood scraps with boiling water and leaving the solution to mature overnight. 

Roots from a local tree make shades of beige to brown.

Pomegranate Skins

Pomegranate skins can produce intense golden yellows. Soak the pips and skins for 2 days to create a fermented solution, when the mixture smells pungent remove the waste and bring to the boil. The longer you learn the yarn or cloth in the boiling liquid the more instense the colour.

Soaking the pomegranate rinds in hot water overnight use a ratio of the same amount of pomegranate to fibre.

Simmer the rind for an hour the next day.

Let it cool down, strain the rind and save the liquid. Add your wet mordanted fibre (previously treated fabric with tannic acid) and add it to the dye pot. To mordant cotton and other plant fibres you need tannin as well as alum, also gallnut extract is a good natural substitute.

Remove the fibre from the dye bath.

Vida Nueva is a group of Zapotec women from Teotitlan del Valle, an indigenous Mexican community with centuries of weaving history. Their patterns and techniques have been passed down from generation to generation. As men were traditionally the weavers of the village women found it difficult to gain recognition, equality and economic gain from their products. That all changed in 1996 when Pastora Asunción Gutierrez Reyes and the other women came together to form Vida Nueva (New Life), a weaving co-operative specialising in natural dyes who’s mission was to create economic opportunities for single, divorced, separated and widowed women in the community.
