RIPTIDE!!!!! - really long animated series

not an anime though, no matter how much grizzly wants it, it would be an animation style where the characters could have very clearly different nose, face and body shapes, really pushing my riptide nose agenda here sorry, each episode would be like 20-40 minutes long and instead of coming out in seasons there would be massive gaps in between episodes, from 2-6 months long, to leave time for writers and animators to get stuff done (massive team of animators btw, i feel like it would be pretty successful)

bitb would be a really long really good 80s horror book with strong homoerotic undertones, a satisfied fanbase and lots of active members in the community making fan comics, films, writing, theories and art ect… until well after the book came out……….. and then it would be made into the most egregious and awful live action movie you have ever seen, the most awful casting (like chris pratt as officer dudes….. throws up) and even worse sfx, oh yeah and the characters would be ruined and the story would become so butchered it wouldn’t make sense, they would do some shit like cut out becky so kian just kisses some random lady (removing both a really good and well written character and a layer of kian’s character that i think is super important) and make rolan really be an evil bug spy the whole time so rand has to kill him to save the town also add in a whole new sub plot that never existed like the rand family is secretly a long line of bug alien hunters or something fucking stupid like that and the entire fanbase would murder whoever thought re-writing the story was a good idea (ahaha can you tell ive been through something like this before ahahaha, character morals and motives being removed and whatnot ahahahhahahaha.)

I've been having so much brainrot about the theming of fate and chance in jrwi riptide so please bear with me because I feel like in our everyday vocabulary use chance and fate interchangeably. Like when someone does something and goes "eh I'll leave it up to chance" as a way of saying it is what it is or whatever happens it fated to happen as it does. BUT there's a big difference in the though process of fate and chance that keeps them from being fully synonymous.

Fate will happen no matter what, no matter how hard you try fate is something that's inevitable. Now whether being aware of fate makes it worse or better is up to interpretation. The largest part of it is the concept that no matter what this will happen no matter the odds.

Chance, like fate, is fairly unreliable. However they differ in the ability to plan and rationalize. With chance someone is able to assess the risk and reward and see a clear meaning in decision. For example I could take the chance and not study for an exam, but then I risk failure. However that failure isn't inevitable. I am not fated to fail the exam, I merely took the chance and either face the consequences of that chance and fail or do well and possibly continue the behavior.

This is the difference I see clearly displayed with Chip and Gill, especially early on in the campaign.

Gill has a clear connection to fate with his status as chosen one and the environment he was raised in. The undersea as we know it is seemingly very black and white, someone is either wholly good or bad so there's no need for chance. Chance can cause hesitance, something you don't want to see in a super soldier like the elders raised Gill to be. It was integral for the elders to raise Gill in an environment where he's taught that he can technically make a choice, but by the end of it all everything he does is for his destiny. Everything is fated to happen. The idea that no matter what he does he doesn't really have a lasting choice makes it easier for the elders to teach him how to detach and face horrible circumstances because it was meant to be and if he were to question them he'd question the good which could only make him bad in the black and white mentality of fate.

We're really seeing the effects of this in recent episodes with everything going on. He's starting to question the black and white of the world and the truth he was fed as he grew up. Despite all that's happening though I feel like Gill still feels a deep connection to fate as a way to hold on to the good in a sea of bad and the idea that he was meant to meet Chip and Jay, he was meant to bring light to all the island and cities they've helped. However in all that good of fate that logic also means that all the bad was fated to happen. He was fated to be trapped, he was fated to nearly die, he was fated to not be strong enough to save everyone, and I think we're really going to start seeing the effects of that even more on Gill.

Chip on the other hand can't afford to believe in fate. Not after everything that's happened to him. If he subscribed to the concepts of fate I don't think he'd be where he is now because he'd have to crack under all that pressure. For as much as Chip gets shit on and called dumb, he's quick on his feet and knows how to calculate a risk which is why he's so deeply intertwined with chance. Chip needs his choices to matter because if he didn't what the hell was everything for? Chip's connection to chance is further solidified by the usage of coins as a sort of motif for him in the form of Arlin's coin.

Coin's tend to connect with chance because they're the fairest way to decide something randomly with a 50/50 split, so while there are two choices that have an effect there's a way to disconnect oneself from the consequences. This split is just random enough that there's comfort if something goes wrong, but leaves enough choice to make it feel like there was a decision made and that choices were made and matter.

Though the coin is traditionally 50/50, like with all chance there's a grey area. What if the coin lands perfectly on its side? What if the coin rolls into a hard to reach place? There's always uncertainty with chance which is something Chip has learned to thrive in throughout his entire life. There's comfort in the uncertainty because Chip knows he has the choice and that those choices dictate whether he lives or dies and I think there's a part of that which invigorates him. He's able to look around at his situation and take a chance and have control, something he didn't have during the events of the hole in the sea. He took a chance on every single person on his crew, both in his co-captains and crewmates. He took a risk with the navy girl who needed to get away. He took a risk picking up a fish man yapping about destiny from the middle of the ocean.

Where Gill sees their meeting as a story he was happy to be written into, Chip sees their meeting as a story he's happy to keep writing.

Ultimately I find the places of fate and chance super interesting and I wish I could better articulate my thoughts about it because I have so many thoughts about them.

I would also like to add in a side note about Jay's place in all this because she truly does feel like the middle man in all this due to what we've learned about the fire people with the special blood that seem to connect to Jay (fate) and her work as a spy and all the important decisions she's made throughout the campaign (chance).

Once again Jay Ferin is truly the most perfect being.

I love love love his parallels with Dakota (Dakota who’s so morally set in the right and rigid direction vs William who sways on the line so much that it feels like the tightrope metaphor wasn’t just for losing control of his powers, it’s also about how with just a few actions his morals can sway very quickly as well and even tumble off the deep end.)

his parallels with vyncent too and how he’s running away from his past while vyncent a trying his best go get back to it! the scene with Kamuri broke me dude you don’t even knowwwww

it hit way to close to home with the ‘feeling like you’re inherently worse than everyone else, and letting that stop you from feeling like you can do anything.’ THE WAY HE LOST AND GOT HIS POWERS ABCK IS SO. FUCKING COOL TO ME

if there were like a moral scale or something he’d be so grounded compared to the other two but like so grounded that his moral scale goes into the negatives and that’s so cool because I love characters with flaws that are their fault, that they have made real horrible mistakes. I love characters that stray the line of ‘I couldn’t have done anything different’ while knowing full well that they could’ve but can just simmer in regret. I love characters with problems that you can’t say ‘it’s not your fault’ but they still deserve a chance anyways

I love how he gets confident when he’s in control, and he deals with fear by being in control of it, and as long as he’s master of the horrors the horrors aren’t so bad. Cause like in season one, it’s scary that mal has Kamuri in a bottle and what he could do with it… but if William knew, if he had control, then it wouldn’t be so terrifying. The bell tech ordeal was so stressful but he’s only calm when he is the one pulling the strings. I think this has something to do with how little he was in deadwood pre death- so many ghosts! So if he tries to rationalize it becomes less scary. Especially with the prime force and heroes, they keep him and pd in the dark and he’s terrified of not knowing what’s going on because look at what happened to Ashe! Where were the heroes! In his mind it’s flawed but it would be less flawed if he had more controllll

OUHHH i’m really thinking of setting myself free from rewatching jrwi episodes and watching stabbyness,, i opened the first episode of reflection a lil while ago and immediately got intimidated cause it was like 5 hours long but maybe i should try to brave it

alright me and @chaos-caverns just spent the past few hours spitballing back and forth thoughts and ideas about triton biology within the jrwi riptide universe. here's what we got so far:

triton evolved to survive both in water and out of it (i mean they breathe air), but it's unlikely that they evolved to live on land/above water. obviously being on the surface won't kill them (we have three very alive examples to prove that) but they probably experience some serious debuffs while up there.

triton are described to live in very deep places, therefore being deep sea inhabitants.

in riptide we also have multiple references to the fact that the buildings in the undersea, or at least in the area that gillion grew up in, are in fact not filled with water, but with air. this means that triton can maneuver both through water and through air/on ground without issue. (this includes any differences in stuff like gravity, drag, walking vs swimming etc.)

we also see humans inside the capitol building, which means the atmospheric pressure inside that building, or at least that room, has to be much lower than the pressure in the water surrounding the buildings, which in turn means that triton (and other underwater races) are not harmed by drastic changes in pressure, nor by the much lower pressure of above water at mean sea level.

however, since building structures that can withstand the difference in atmospheric pressure is unnecessarily expensive and inefficient, it's likely that in general the rooms, even if filled with air, have the same pressure as the water outside, meaning that triton are not at all used to the low atmospheric pressure of the oversea, and any triton coming to the surface will most likely face some aches and pains while their body adjusts.

on top of that, fish can and will get sunburnt if the water is too clear or they swim to close to the surface, and the sunburns are much worse, sometimes even detrimental to the fishes health. this would mean that triton probably have very sun sensitive skin and if at the surface might need to stay in the shade or get some special potions to avoid permanent damage to their skin.

deep sea fish are much less dense than other fish for buoyancy reasons (if you've ever scuba dived before you know this). that includes their bones. triton have brittle bones and weigh much less than one would suspect.

triton definitely have some mammalian traits, as gillion has been described to sweat on multiple occasions

now for something really fun: the opah is the only known full warm blooded fish, and because of that has much more energy and is much faster than the other, very slow, deep sea fish that need to conserve their energy. it also has an internal temperature regulation system not unlike a radiator built in that is mostly used to keep it warm, but can also cool it down. considering triton seem to be the strong, agile, fighter type (pursuit predator), and don't overheat despite the vast difference in temperature between the undersea and the oversea, a circulatory system reminiscent of the one the opah has seems likely. again that just means the temperature change won't kill them, they might still get uncomfortable with the heat at first, or just in general. this could be one reason why gillion keeps jumping overboard. (trying to fact check some stuff and i just found out that some lizards cool off by standing around with their mouths open. i think that would be a very gillion thing to do)

now for something really really fun: the lungfish! and yes it's exactly what it sounds like, it's a fish with both gills and lungs. and it can fucking breathe below and above water. triton having both gills and lungs officially makes sense. (the lungfish is a freshwater fish found in shallow rivers and such, and i don't know how this would translate to a saltwater deep sea humanoid creature, if at all, but this is fucking fantasy alright? we're allowed to pretend that this is flawless logic)

fish, like amphibians, need to keep their skin moist if they want to survive. we just don't talk about it because most fish can't breathe above water. another reason why gillion jumps off the ship constantly. also explains why he keeps saying "stay moist" to caspian, who does not, in fact, need to stay moist.

now for the eyes. there's two factors to that: light sensitivity and light refraction.

let's start with light sensitivity. as we have previously established, triton did not evolve for survival on the surface, and they are deep sea creatures. both of that explains the darkvision, but also implies that their eyes are very likely to be highly sensitive to light and the daylight might be too bright for them to really be able to see well. as for a real life example, shark eyes are super well equipped to see in dark, murky waters as they have a layer of mirrored crystals behind their retina, reflecting the picture into the retina again to increase clarity. and bottom-dwelling or nocturnal sharks are in fact pretty light sensitive. all in all this makes for a good estimate for triton eyes. the fact that gillion's vision would already be too bright makes the fact that he keeps staring into the sun even more concerning. then again if you're already constantly blinded you might as well, right? (also i don't know if i'm remembering this correctly but isn't gillion's perception pretty low? this could be part of that. potentially)

now light refraction. the refraction of light underwater is different from the refraction in air. that's why everything is blurry when we open our eyes underwater, but not when we wear goggles. but we evolved to live above water, while triton, as previously established, evolved to live both in water and in air. since evolution would have no clue that they already see bad when in the sun and the smartest move would be to make them able to see when underwater really good, the most likely result would be that in an attempt to optimize triton would end up farsighted underwater and nearsighted in air, like frogs.

since triton's eyesight seems to be less than optimal no matter what, they have probably developed some senses to compensate, for example picking up subtle vibrations in the water around them, or good hearing or sense of smell.

a lot of aquatic mammals can close their nostrils so they don't get water in them, and seals can do the same to their ear canals. triton would also do that i think.

the fins on the side of triton's heads might be used for not only the usual fin stuff, like balance and steering, while underwater, but also as a sort of outer ear that funnels the sound waves into the ear canals to amplify their hearing while outside of it, and on top of that to express emotion, similar to almost every mammals ears except humans'. the fins on triton's limbs might also reflect their emotions, though probably much subtler. a lot of animals also use their ears to regulate heat, and this could very well translate to triton's fins.

also one final fun thought we had was that even though triton seem to be pursuit predators (actively hunting and fighting and running and stuff), they might be ambush predators instead (sneaking, ambushing etc.) and the reason gillion is Like That is because of his training, not because of triton biology.

i desperately hope there's no mistakes in this because there is no way that i am proof reading all of that at 1 am. anyways if you read this and think "oh hey, i know some stuff about deep sea fish/ aquatic mammals/ physics!" feel free to add some stuff. and if i said something wrong don't hold back.

anyway, I'm going to rant underneath your ask about being a child now im so sorry 😔

It's always been so weird being as young as I am both on tumblr and in the fandom space I'm currently a part of. Like realistically, a 14 y/o boy liking minecraft/mcyt sounds really normal but I don't know anyone my age that is open about being a part of this space. I think growing up on tumblr instead or twitter or tiktok honestly really helped when it comes to being happy in my intrests, since almost every other freshman to ever exist has no idea what this website is and they have no chance of ever finding my posts to make fun of me with them. I still use the other two, but I don't post and I only really open them when a cc like Charlie or Ted posts.

It's hilarious to me that because of my current intrests (jrwi and charlie in general) almost everyone that I'm friends with on here are much older minors or adults, mainly because charlie has a pretty mature and well rounded audience (THANK FUCKING GOD 🙏🙏), but also because everybody else my age that are in this fandom are on tiktok. Using tiktok for me and actually posting is kinda unsafe because of the way the tiktok contact sharing works? if someone from my classes finds it through "recommend accounts" then they can look through my account and harrass me if they recognize who it is. Not to steal a Charlie Slimecicle quote for a second, but I was rewatching an old podcast episode from the very beginning of 2020 and he described it as "elevated highschool" which I 100% agree with. Even 3 years later it's still very much just a higher form of highschool bullshit to have to deal with.

But since I don't post on tiktok I don't really have much to worry about!! My account is blank and it's the same @ as my url so nobody should recognize it and put a face to a name which im grateful for. However, being on tumblr isn't the greatest either;

People on here are all adults and I feel a little bit intimidated? In a sense? I understand that I'm a LOT different than most kids my age and I don't typically have anything to worry about but!! I feel like that's what makes it worse. The other people my age that were or still are on here don't understand tumblr etiquette, don't understand not to act like this is twitter and not have stupid cubito discourse, or just aren't funny? Idk I've just never found anyone my age (with the exception of like 3 of my mutuals you guys are amazing and I love you) that I can really talk to on here, so all of the friends I've made are much much older. I'm smart with who I talk to and how I talk to them so I'm safe don't worry!! My parents raised me right and online safety is such a wonderful thing, but one of my closest mutuals on here is in college right now, and the others are juniors or seniors in highschool. I kept my age out of my bio for so long but honestly that was because I was terrified I would scare away the people that I trusted so much because literally obviously it's going to feel weird for them to be mutuals with a genuine honest to god child. I'm relatively close to turning 15 so I'm getting less and less worried about stuff like that happening but eh that was still a real fear for a while.

What if the rest of them were to fall like Grizzly?

So I have been thinking about what happened to the rest The Council after the fall out of banishing Grizzly. But I thought what if the rest of the gods were to have a downfall as well.

With Condi's bit, it has a spoiler for the first campaign of JRWI but it really isnt much. Just skip the first paragraph since its reasoning

So in the first campaign; Sylnan end up having a a demon in their arms. Since we wont really be getting an ending to that, I just thought we could get what could've been through one of the people on there.

I was thinking that Condi could end up attracting a demon to his arm.

It can be taken place after the SCU video and after they had to kill Grizzly to let him rest. After that entire thing, something from the nether could've gotten attached. So when Condi gets back home to Molympus, he barely realizes what gotten attached and tries to make it stop growing with his own homebrewed potions. None of the potions work as it gets worse. Knowing what happened to Grizzly, he hides his arm away from the other two

Slowly, as the demon in his arm gets stronger, the more scared Condi becomes of himself. Not knowing when he could snap on accident and not knowing how to get rid of it

Sooner or later, Condi gets corrupted by the demon. He is stuck in the mentality that he deserves to be the only god among them. He should be considered to be the most powerful and the only one to rule. He ambushes them with potions that he has been brewing in secret without the other two knowing. Which causes them to needing to kill Condi out of pure self defense since the corruption refuses to let go and it keeps fighting them.

In Condi's final words, it finally lets go since it has lost its host. He tells the two that he's deeply sorry for what he has done before begging for death.

With Slime's downfall, its different than the other two; he ends up leaving himself.

He finds himself responsible for both deaths (Grizzly is by jumping the gun and Condi is by him being neglectful) and the guilt has been eating him inside.

Slime slowly start to get more and more closed off; he alienate himself from everything else and makes sure that everything stays in check. Being a lot more strict with how everything works just to try to make sure nothing can go wrong for nothing can repeat itself all over again.

But Bizly will be more outspoken by this time. Also wanting to make sure everything stays in balance but doesnt want Slime to be controlling.

Wanting to make sure that nothing can go mad with power; Slime leaves his godhood. He doesnt want to turn into what the others were, what Grizzly was, what Schlatt was. He fears turning into them and fears that he'll met their same end.

So he leaves Bizly with Molympus

Which leaves me with the last god; Bizly

He is the sole leader of the new worlds with losing three gods. He never goes mad, instead he just gets sad with the solitude in Molympus but he grows used to it

Its not like he has much of a choice anyways

So yeah, thats the basics of my ideas. I need to stretch them out and I might end up writing something but not sure.

idk I just. A combination of Further Whump Effects and the crews best attempts to help and all that yknow?? do they just Let him dissociate til he comes back down (even if it takes a long long time), do they try and get him to talk Now (maybe even accidentally pulling those same strings price installed doing so?) YKNOW!!!!!!

Tbh, not any CURRENT plans like within the next month or so to continue onto this fic or add another chapter like I said I might. I am currently working on a pretty big project and am doing the jrwi big bang event which is also probably gonna take up a lot of my attention. So there’s no plans right now to add to it but possibly in the future if I remember that this fic exists (bc my main problem is I forget they do)

Ehe but I’m glad that you like it! This is definitely one of the fics I’m more proud of so I’m super glad that you like it so much. There was a lot of conversation that happened in DMs behind that fic that came up with the entire idea, I think I’ve had several conversations with two different people about Chip and price funny enough.

And you’re right, they aren’t safe even when they get away, and Chip would know that. Even if jay and Gill don’t know that, they can definitely get some hints just by the way Chip was acting that this dude is no good. Because Chip, as HARD as he tried to be casual and subtle about it, was very obvious about it. Jay noticed something was wrong the second that price told him to shut up and Chip clammed up like he’s never known how to speak.

I think that as soon as Chip gets to the ship, he immediately, if not with a bit of delay, breaks down, which would subsequently make things worse (he’s not allowed to cry). He would isolate himself from the crew as much as he could, maybe hiding in the storage room or somewhere that no one would find him. He wouldn’t speak to them because he’s not allowed to and I think this would go on a few days maybe. I do think jay and gill, in an attempt to help him, would accidentally play into the things Price taught him and end up making it worse (they don’t notice it’s worse) before it gets better.

There’s a ton of stuff I could write after they get back to the ship, I just don’t have a ton of time to work on that right now when I got some big projects going on. But thank you for the ask! I’m super glad you like the fic and it made my morning to see all your thoughts.
