i forgor to share something funnies said from when i shared my au with my pal so here

how old is tommy

everybody's been confused about tommy's age, so I thought I'd put out my theory.

lou is 39 years old so it would make sense for tommy to be around that age. if tommy had joined the lafd right out of high school he could have been there for two years by the time chim joined in 2005 and he'd be 39.

but then we come to the problem of him being in the army. even if he had joined right out of high school, pilots have to complete a year of training, and are then required to serve for 10 years, meaning if he had completed his service, he would have to be 29 by the time he joined the lafd. assuming he wasn't a probie at the same time as chim, and he would have had to be 30 in 2005, making him almost 50 now, which doesn't feel quite right

but the key phrase in that last part is "if he completed his service". though we don't know his exact orientation, we do know tommy isn't straight, and he would have been serving in the army during dadt. if someone found out about his sexuality, he could have been discharged before his mandated service was completed.

there are a lot of assumptions and non-exact amounts here, so I haven't really cleared anything up, but personally, I like to think he's 42. he joined the army right out of high school, did his one year of training and 2 years of service before getting discharged, took a year to get his bearings/join the fire academy, and was at the 118 for about a year when chim joined, making him 23 in 2005, and 42 now. why? I'll explain

even though you legally become an adult at 18, you're still not really a fully formed person yet. if tommy was 18 when he joined the army, even if he already knew he was queer, his time in the army would have been instrumental to how he views himself and his identity, just in terms of growing up and being an adult. if he was already out and proud, the army would have broken his confidence down, and if he never accepted himself, they would have just reinforced whatever self-loathing he had. plus if he didn't even know, finding out you're gay when it could lose you your job is traumatizing. having tommy join the army fresh out of high school, and then get discharged 3 years later gives him enough time to have the training necessary to still be a pilot 20 years later, and enough time to really have been broken down by the system, while still not being too old when he joins the lafd

i don't know what the policy is for telling people why you got discharged, but if tommy could have kept it a secret at the lafd, he probs would have. obviously the writers probably weren't planning this when they introduced him, but having him not only be closeted queer, but also have him be fired for being queer adds a really interesting layer to his character and his interactions with chim and hen in the begins episodes.

and as for why have him be 42 instead of say, 41 or 43? because Abby was 42. someone pointed out that tommy and abby parallel each other in how they're both people who have helped/are helping buck better understand who he is and what he wants for himself in terms of a romantic relationship. having him be 42 makes that connection

what is jack and toby's relationship like?

oohh ive covered this a few times. i love them.

jack helps the proxies so that slenderman lets him stay in the forest as refuge. he doesn't like toby at first, seeing him as too violent, too aggressive, viewing himself even in his monstrous form as more human than toby - which is true, in a sense . toby kills for slenderman. he wouldn't be killing people if not for that, BUT he absolutely finds release in it - he makes a game out of it, he detaches himself from the victims and reflects all he wanted to do to his dad onto them. sometimes he catches himself saying exact phrases his dad screamed back onto them. bro probably called his victims 'npcs' at some point LOLLLL

and jack RARELY EVER does his own killing. he gets a lot of his bodies as a dark web human remains disposer(cuz he gets paid for it too), or from jeff. and it took a while for him to be able to stomach the shit he has to do to survive, so it's rough for him.

jack hates it, jack hates what toby does, but he can see so much in toby that goes beyond that and it fucking sucks and it hurts and jacks prob cried FOR toby before. not in front of him, but anytime jacks confronting his own mortality and humanity, toby is one of the first people that comes to mind each time, and he wants to throw up thinking about it. only nina can rival how emotional jack is LOL

it's kinda weird for toby the way jack treats him - sometimes he gets mad and accuses him of treating toby like some research paper in a book, because he knew jack had a decently privileged upbringing in comparison to himself, and hates the supiroirty complex. jack asks too many questions and is always just trying to grasp whats going on in tobys brain and its fucking infuritating for toby.

but jacks just always fucking there. jack is easily the most present person, always easy to find, usually calm. tim/brian are rarely around, kate is unsettling and hiding away half the time, jeffs a dick, bens unreliable, ninas in love with jeff and has a life seperate from the creeps. even natalie has long periods of time where she just cannot get herself to confront toby because she has her own issues and is struggling to even maintain her job as a waitress. she can't be there half the time.

but jacks never gone. jack rarely tells him to get the fuck out. jacks so welcoming, even if he's an annoying uptight prick who thinks he's better than everyone - and half the time, toby knows jack is. he knows jacks better than everyone else around him and it sucks fucking ASSSSSS being around someone like him, but its also something toby needs really bad

after a year or so of knowing toby jack would be able to comfortably say he loves him, whether its as a friend or a brother or whatever the fuck sort of fucked up shit is going on in these freaks heads . again, jack is INCREDIBLY FUCKING HUMAN hes emotional he loves so hard he hates himself he wants people he wants connection he feels so alone he wants everyone to be there he wants his mom he wants his siblings he wants to read he wants to walk around he wants to cook he wants to breath in fresh air. and toby really does put in some work for that. maybe not correctly, honestly he might fuck it up more often than he gets it right, but who the fuck else is gonna invite jack to go swimming on a random summer night ? how badly he wish he could see tobys face when toby asks to hang out

PROKO - has a lot of really great drawing fundamental resources on their YouTube channel for free. They also have paid online courses that go more in depth!

PoseManiacs - I used this when I was trying to learn and practice poses as well!

Above I've listed just a few of the many many many resources out there to study poses. These tend to be the people I look to most for references, tho they aren't the only ones!

If you're looking to practice and get better at anatomy and the fluidity of your poses, I would suggest starting by drawing actual people first. That way you know how real bodies move and twist and turn and what masclues go where. It makes simplifying and stylizing easier down the road!

Something I did a LOT, and honestly still do a lot, is find pictures of people or art of characters whose poses I like and just try to draw what I see. I have sketchbooks fuuulll of poses I copied just to practice! Tracing can definitely have it's value as well when you're learning!

I utilize Pinterest a lot to creat difference boards for reference photos I may need, and it's come in handy quite often!

I can show you how *I * draw bodies in general, but know that I kind of flub around until something starts to feel right haha. I'm still learning and practicing as well! How I draw bodies may now work for you and that's chill! Its all about trying out lots of different styles and seeing what you like best, or what methods make sense to you.

Fair warning: this probs isn't the most accurate tutorial, I just kinda threw something down as a general example hehe. I'm preaching about references but didn't want to use one at the moment cus I'm tired haha

ok so this is all just rambling because my mental state is very weird right now and its the holiday season which means ive been binging youtubers i used to be obsessed with as a teen but just hear me out

i watched these tiktoks about live laugh love actually being kind of a real statement like we associate it with like gen x white target wine moms or whatever but there is some deep truth to live laugh love being so simple because the core of life really is that simple

in my strange youtube brain addled haze i recalled a video by dan howell called “trying to live my truth” now this video is in a lot of ways a pre-cursor to his eventual coming out video discussing dan wanting to finally be honest with himself and all that but what i want to talk about are the three tenets he mentions at the very end as what keeps him happy in day to day life (even if they dont necessarily answer the big questions) which are Laughter, Food, and Sex. now keep in mind he is discussing this in the context of his own life so if those tenets are not relatable to you that is fine but in a lot of ways he sort of reverse engineered or perhaps re-framed a familiar phrase, “Live, Laugh, Love” to something perhaps more easily tangible to other younger queer terminally online people.

Ah, thank you!! I’m happy that my work brings you joy and inspires you 🥺 I’ve (unfortunately) been in a big mental health rut myself recently, so I really appreciate the feedback and completely understand how that can destroy one’s motivation to create 💦

I’d say start off with short pieces, even if it’s something as small as a paragraph or even a few lines of dialogue. You can try using writing prompt generators to get yourself started. Alternatively, you could do a random character generator; throw in some TWST characters and see which groups get spat back out, then try doing an exercise in imagination on how those characters would interact with one another. You can also google random images and try to write a short story out of whatever out of context pictures you find most interesting.

You want to slowly ease yourself back into writing, not force yourself to suddenly take on a big project or a ton of requests. Don’t set deadlines, just create at your own pace and for the fun of it!! Another thing to keep in mind is that you should feel excited to write, so try to create something that you find a lot of happiness in. That will help motivate you and give you the energy you need to write!! (I know that when I get excited to write something, I’ll lose sleep to keep working on it and I won’t feel tired at all 😅)

Nothing specific really, more like if you had overall thoughts, idk why but when I was reading one part of his comments on moral values and stuff that made me think of you (hoping this doesn't sound creepy ahhaha). Personally I really disagree with most of what he says, especially with his descentralization of rationality and with all of his superman stuff (though I do agree with part of his critiques of religion and hypocrisy in religious institutions and believers but not fully)

I won’t pretend to be super well versed in neitzche so take everything I say wit’s a grain of salt because it is all based on my basic understanding of his philosophy.

that being said. his philosophy really resonates with me LMAO i very much agree with the idea of questioning our morality and things we think are “givens” and i do think everyone needs to deconstruct every single value they have and work from the ground up considering only the actual concrete realities of life rather than letting their morals/values/thought processes/etc be predetermined by religion or current society or whatever. like nothing inherently has value you MAKE the value for yourself and you decide what matters and that’s the whole point of it all. although i haven’t been able to dive in i very much enjoy reading neitzche i think he’s a breath of fresh air compared to other philosophers because hes like. well humans aren’t really all that special or important. nothing is all that special or important. and once you understand that then you can decide for yourself what you plan on making important.

also from what i understand of it i agree with his superman theory 😳 the way i interpret it, “God is dead” is like. why are you blindly trusting religion to guide your life. form your values outside of religion. fully realize them and think through them and understand WHY you value them. in my opinion it’s not so much moving away from religion but actively synthesizing it and having those values be grounded in something concrete rather than “God said so.” my interpretation is also prob influenced by the fact that my religion also encourages questioning things and seeking out answers and discourages blind obedience lol

and i think w the superman stuff.. i agree but like i agree with MY version of it. i think that people who are able to reevaluate their worldview and realize that everything is based purely on their perspective and that they can only ever live their own lives within themselves and build off that are a step above and i think that they are extremely influential which is exactly why it is so rare because if one person becomes a “superman” by fully realizing themself other people will follow suit and try to “find themselves” by copying the superman and itll just be the same cycle of adopting a set of ideals created by someone else.

i don’t like the way it’s phrased but i also agree w the master vs slave morality in the sense that like. it takes a strong will to construct a set of morals and stick to it. compared to those who base their morality not so much on what they decide but more on their reaction to that of the “master”
