#the PacRim AU
Note
Ok sorry Corunir, the last one was mean, so how about 79 (hugs) and 97 (reunion) for him?
:D hugs for corunir time! we are. back in the pacific rim au for some reason lol it's pelennor-flavored oops
“Esterín!” She turns around with a tired grin as Corunir rushes into their prep room. She’s already halfway into her jaeger armor. “I wasn’t sure you would make it.”
“I wouldn’t leave you to this alone,” she says. “It was close, but I am here.” Back from her own secretive mission- and entirely unrested from the look of her. She leans wearily into his quick hug. "I can still fight," she says before he can ask.
He holds his tongue and instead asks: "Have you seen Golodir?”
“No, I only just got here myself.” Corunir curses under his breath. Her voice sharpens. “What’s wrong?” Corunir presses his hands to his face.
“I don’t know. He hasn’t said anything to me, but you’ve seen him these last couple weeks. Something is eating at him.” He hurriedly dons his own pilot’s armor. “No one has seen him since they called the last sighting, maybe-”
The pilots’ wing shudders; the surest sign that a jaeger has dropped. Not even the nearest and swiftest pilots could have dropped in the time between the first alarms and now.
They have been doing this long enough they hardly need the Drift to know each other’s thoughts. Corunir snatches up his helmet and they run for Sparkstone.
This will be a dire day and everyone in the complex knows it. There are too many arrayed against them, too many and all at once, and that’s a new thing and that should scare them, because new things in this have never once meant something good. Corunir’s fear for Golodir dwarfs such rational things, swamping the Drift so badly that Esterín flounders in it until he can bring it under control.
We will find him, she sends in the place where their minds touch and oh, she really is exhausted. “Where are we needed?” she asks into the comms.
“Head west,” the reply comes immediately. “Thrúgrath. Only Category Two, but plenty dangerous.”
“Is there any word from Golodir?” Corunir asks quickly, before they have no choice but to move out.
A hesitation. “He also went west.” Twin spikes of alarm shake the Drift. A longer hesitation. “He went alone.”
“We’re on our way,” Esterín says over the swell of Corunir’s angry, anxious thoughts. Of course he went alone, the stubborn man. Of course he went without a word. Even newly renamed and remade, Dúnachar was not meant to be piloted by one man, no matter his insistence that he would not enter the Drift again since his return, no matter his insistence that it could be done, at great need.
He says it with such certainty, that he could pilot a jaeger alone. Corunir never really wants to know why he’s so sure.
Of course he had gone. Corunir checks Sparkstone’s displays. Of course they had let him. They haven’t been so desperate in recent memory.
“Corunir,” Esterín says, aloud and in the between-place that only really exists like this, settled into Sparkstone’s nerves.
“Let’s go,” he says. She’s worried, too. For Golodir, for their friends, for him. He tries to send back reassurance, the thought that it will be alright, but the Drift does not well tolerate even kindly lies. They step forward together.
Thrúgrath is already dead when they find it. Dúnachar kneels over it, bright sword sunk deep in its chest.
“Golodir,” Corunir calls through the comms. “Golodir, are you there?”
Sparkstone’s speakers crackle with static for a long, terrible moment. A heavy sigh. “I’m here.”
Relief blooms in Sparkstone like a long-awaited storm. Dúnachar stands, the groaning of metal audible even through Sparkstone’s thick armor. Golodir’s jaeger leans heavily on its sword, but makes it upright. And then it wobbles, and something in its legs gives way with a great shrieking of metal plates, and it goes back down.
The instinct to jump forward, to catch him and hold him close, comes from both of them at once. “You fool…” Corunir thinks- says aloud, to his own surprise. Golodir’s laugh is breathless and short through the speakers. Something crackles; Dúnachar’s comms must be damaged, too. Little surprise, given the state of the jaeger.
“Maybe,” Golodir says. “Maybe. But I do not think so.” His breathing rasps loudly through the speakers in Sparkstone’s head. “It was necessary.”
Hardly, Esterín growls, not meant for Golodir to hear, not with such vehemence. Corunir finds himself in great agreement. “We can’t stay here,” she says aloud. They adjust Sparkstone’s grip on Dúnachar, dark and almost dead in their arms. “We’ll get you home, Golodir.” Sparkstone turns around and begins the long walk back to safety.

fuck it friday.
@kitkatpancakestack tagged me in a fuck it friday on march 10th (!!!) and today I am rising from the dead to post this excerpt from an absolutely unhinged The Terror Pacific Rim AU im working on. I'm still not committed to finishing it but I'm so obsessed with it rn and so you all must suffer with me
“She served us well,” Crozier comments, perhaps as conciliatory as he knows how to be. “She looks good as new, standing here.”
She looks small, he can’t help noticing, for all she towers over him. He would’ve thought, not very long ago at all, that she was the biggest thing in the world; but that was before he saw her sister go up against a kaiju, and fail. Crozier is just like her, his mind offers up without prompting, and it’s true; the man used to be on billboards, larger than life, he and Ross together telling stirring tales of going up against not only these interstellar invaders but the very elements. To meet him in person, though, he’s just a man, and shorter than James expected to boot. It’s difficult to say how hard the life of a Jaeger pilot wears on a man because as of yet, none of them have lived to be as old as Francis Crozier. Crozier’s no good as a test subject - it takes only hours around the man to realize he’s pickling himself in a barrel of whiskey, and not very slowly at that. He’ll turn to jaundiced leather before he’ll roll over and die, just out of spite.
The man James was just a few months ago could only dream of reaching the heights Francis Crozier seems to take for granted. Standing in the cold of the Jaeger bay, he cannot even truthfully say he wants it anymore. He has seen what kind of decisions a man like that has to make, and he’d be just as happy to do his little part to save the world by, say, recycling cans and bottles. Whatever it takes so that no one ever looks at him as they breathe their last ever again.
A breath shudders out of him against his will; it fogs in front of his face but he hardly notices. He flexes his fists once, then again. His chest is a sucking vacuum, and nature abhors a vacuum, but he cannot seem to incite his diaphragm to inhale, no matter how desperately his brain screams for fresh oxygen. It goes on longer and longer, until he truly thinks he may see the edges of his vision beginning to dim - and then he sucks in a sobbing breath, undignified in the extreme. He has to rest his hands on his thighs and hang his head.
“It was - it was - “ he cannot find the words; there may be no words for the depths of existential horror he has so lately been required to confront.
“I’ve seen it, Commander,” and for once, there’s not a trace of disdain in Marshall Crozier’s voice; just pity, plain and simple. “I know.”

rewatching pacific rim (2013, dir. guillermo del toro) for the nth time and it really is a cinematic masterpiece. the idea that the only way for us humans to defeat monsters is through effective global collaboration but more specifically, through people that are drift compatible, meaning SOULMATES who can be romantic partners or siblings or father and son or best friends or complete strangers with very similar experiences/traumas, and that the stronger their bond the stronger the jaeger and the better it fights, is just

or 25 with Est + ????
(this is one, incredibly short, and two, entirely out of left field for & to me (i know i say this more than is reasonable but.) idk why exactly it just. Decided. that this is where this one was gonna go at ~2am a few days ago, but it sure did, so i scraped some things together when i had downtime lol. i don't necessarily plan to expand it atm, but! we'll see. anyway, pacrim-lotro fusion lmao)
“Sparkstone, prepare for drop,” Silmeniel’s voice says, tinny through the speakers.
“Sparkstone ready to drop,” Esterín calls back. The segmented Jaeger armor flexes familiarly around her, Sparkstone’s heart thrumming nearly loud enough to drown out their helmet comms.
“Ready to initiate Drift,” Corunir says beside her.
“Neural handshake initiated.” Esterín closes her eyes.
The lake gleams in the twilight. Her older sibling teaches her to weave hats from reeds. The refuge burns. And then she is no longer alone in the Drift. Dol Halcalan smells sweet in the summertime. His mother laughs, though not unkindly. “You worry enough for all of us." The Watchers stand guard over the swamp.
She arrives in the village late at night and approaches a stranger. He tells the whole sorry story to someone he does not know. "My captain is on the other side," he says. "I know… I know you only just met me. You have no reason to believe me, much less trust me, but please-" "I will help you." It was years before they stepped into a Jaeger together, but it began there.
"Neural bridge stable. Calibration complete," Silmeniel says. "Imroval will join you soon, Sparkstone. Category Three Kaiju, codename Blind-strider, three miles south of your position."
"Understood," Corunir says. "We're on our way."
It’s old habit, now, to march into the sea, minds brushing as they step in sync towards the great Nameless thing rising from the dark waters. Esterín raises the shock-canon in Sparkstone’s left arm and Corunir raises the right, ready to extend the blade when Blind-strider draws near.

seven sentence sunday
in light of that last post I realized I should probably give people an amuse-bouche to get a sense of what they might be getting into
no one tagged me this is purely self-gratification
“Frank,” Tom Blanky nods a greeting as he sits down to eat with him, kitty-corner.
“Tom,” he nods back. Tom sets to and they sit in blissful silence until -
“Oh! How novel. You know, back at the Sydney Shatterdome the tables all fell out by rank.” Fitzjames descends upon them, swooping down with a tray like he’s on safari, gone native. He has a despicable chumminess to him, all public-school RP and a delivery that makes Francis suspect he has a sister called Clemmy and plays polo with his many cousins.
I will however take this opportunity to bug @kitkatpancakestack - what (if anything) are you working on???

“Ranger Nakayama,” says Marshal Piandao. “I’m glad to see you made it here in one piece. Welcome to Hong Kong.”
“Um, thank you, sir,” Zuko says. “It’s an honour to be here.”
Piandao’s eyes crinkle in what Zuko recognizes as a smile. “I’d like you to meet Ranger Aang Gyatso,” he says, and inclines his head in the direction of the man standing next to him. “Your co-pilot.”
With the Jaeger Program nearing the end of its life, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps brings in Zuko Nakayama, ex-Jaeger pilot, as a last-ditch effort. His role is simple: to act as co-pilot for the newly restored Avatar Fury, and hopefully bring an end to the Kaiju War, once and for all.
For day 1 of @zukkaweek 2023: Modern AU.

sooo i started thinking about pacific rim again
[ID: A traditional drawing of Sigma from Bungo Stray Dogs on lined paper, wearing a drivesuit from Pacific Rim. The drivesuit resembles a mecha-style suit of armor. His full body is shown, standing and leaning more onto his right leg. His right arm is awkwardly sitting near his waist, and his left hand is brushing his bangs from his face. The plates of armor are white, whereas the suit underneath is black. He's looking off to the right with a neutral expression. End ID.]
